00:00:00Amplice 500 was a most unusual race.
00:00:03Pole sitter Fittipaldi jumped to the lead and stayed there for 92 laps.
00:00:06A wheel bearing exploded on Danny Sullivan's car, sending him into the Turn 1 wall.
00:00:11Danny was dazed, but not hurt, and is ready to continue the fight.
00:00:16Pancho Carter also suffered a bad wheel bearing that sent him ricocheting off the Turn 4 wall.
00:00:23In the pits, the Penske team struggled to help Rick chase a changing track.
00:00:27He was fighting to keep up.
00:00:31Michael Andretti suffered wheel bearing failure as well.
00:00:34After repairs, he resumed the fight.
00:00:37Fittipaldi's lead was lost when his tires blistered on the rapidly changing track.
00:00:41Others were fighting similar problems.
00:00:49That left Bobby Rahal in the lead, chased by Ari Leyondyke.
00:00:54On the 168th lap, Ari closed Rahal.
00:00:58The possibility of his first ever IndyCar win was riding with him.
00:01:01Rahal was trying to score his second Indy win,
00:01:04but he could do little to hold off the Flying Dutchman.
00:01:09Once past, the only question was, could he hold on?
00:01:12He had been so close so many times before.
00:01:21Ari's crew could scarcely believe what was happening.
00:01:24The dream had in fact come true.
00:01:26Leyondyke's first IndyCar victory circle was in the biggest of them all.
00:01:35For Leyondyke and his team, it was a million dollar payday,
00:01:38and at first, it was a little overwhelming.
00:01:40The excitement of Indy has calmed down a bit,
00:01:42and now it's time to get on and try and win the championship.
00:01:46The defending PPP IndyCar world champion is Emerson Fittipaldi,
00:01:50and he is locked in the season-long fight challenge
00:01:53by the young points leader, Allenser Jr., in pursuit of his first championship.
00:01:58Third in the points is three-time kart champion Rick Mears.
00:02:02As now, all eyes focus on the PPG Cup,
00:02:06the symbol of the IndyCar World Series champion.
00:02:24The quest for the PPG IndyCar World Championship continues
00:02:28at the Milwaukee Mile in the Miller Genuine Draft 200,
00:02:32round number four of the PPG IndyCar World Series for the IndyCars.
00:02:36Now, just a few moments ago, those gray clouds over the speedway
00:02:41began to drizzle just a little bit,
00:02:43and as a result, a lot of the umbrellas came out,
00:02:46but you can see that the sun is still shining.
00:02:49And as a result, a lot of the umbrellas came out,
00:02:52but you can see that the drivers are at their cars.
00:02:55There's Ari Leyendijk, the Indy winner.
00:02:57Umbrella overhead, but he's ready to go.
00:03:00He even has his earphones plugged in.
00:03:01There's Rick Mears. He is the pole sitter here today,
00:03:04and he is ready to go racing.
00:03:10Hello, and welcome to the Milwaukee Mile. I'm Paul Page.
00:03:13Now, we're not giving up on this one.
00:03:15It's just a very, very light rain that has passed through the area,
00:03:18and they say there is a very, very good chance
00:03:20that we're going to get the race in, so we're going to stick with it.
00:03:22The drivers are certainly right there
00:03:24and anticipating the start of the Milwaukee 200.
00:03:28Now, Ari Leyendijk is the Indy champion,
00:03:31and he has had a very, very busy week,
00:03:34especially when you consider that they had not really planned
00:03:37an Indianapolis 500-mile win.
00:03:39Here's a report. Sam Posey.
00:03:41When Ari Leyendijk won Indy last week,
00:03:44it was not only his first Indy win,
00:03:46it was his first win ever in any Indy car race.
00:03:49The past week has been somewhat, for me,
00:03:52like I'm living in a dream.
00:03:55And on the other side, it's been really exciting.
00:03:58And all the attention from the press and the fans is just great.
00:04:02We knew he would win races,
00:04:05but we never could win the Indianapolis 500.
00:04:10As years of frustration came to an end,
00:04:12a flood tide of emotions swept over hard.
00:04:15That really happened immediately,
00:04:17when I drove the car on the platform,
00:04:19and then my wife, Mieke, came in the cockpit,
00:04:21and we kind of held each other for...
00:04:24It seemed for a long time, it wasn't that long,
00:04:26but that was an emotional moment,
00:04:28and then I knew, you know, this really happened.
00:04:30I was so impressed, because all the people were still there,
00:04:33and they were waving, and they were yelling,
00:04:35and that was the most wonderful thing I ever experienced.
00:04:39Everywhere he went, from New York to Milwaukee,
00:04:42there was tangible evidence that the Indy dream was indeed reality.
00:04:47I woke up in the morning, and I thought,
00:04:49well, I guess if I open up the papers now,
00:04:51I'm sure that it happened,
00:04:53because I knew there was going to be a lot of coverage on the race.
00:04:56And even right now, we're almost a week down the road,
00:05:00and I'm still thinking, like, it's all like a dream.
00:05:04That's a nice experience,
00:05:06because he got to recognize something,
00:05:08and it's like not...
00:05:10Well, how do you spell his name?
00:05:12Leyendijk?
00:05:14And now everybody knows who Ari Leyendijk is,
00:05:18so I don't have to explain anymore
00:05:20which car he's driving, which color, which number.
00:05:23They just know. That's fun.
00:05:26Indy has brought delight to a deserving couple,
00:05:29but it has changed them very little.
00:05:31I really believe he never will change.
00:05:33He only gets busier.
00:05:35But I don't think he will change for his...
00:05:39I think he will be the same guy as he always was.
00:05:42I'm not going to go out and do any crazy things.
00:05:45I'm a pretty conservative guy in that respect,
00:05:48but what I'd really like is maybe to be able to stay home for a week
00:05:53and enjoy the sunshine in Arizona.
00:05:55But I don't think it's going to happen for the next few months.
00:06:00Well, Ari Leyendijk may not change,
00:06:04but life has certainly changed around him.
00:06:06There he is. You see him standing right by his car.
00:06:08He's ready to go racing.
00:06:10As a matter of fact, the rain has abated here,
00:06:12and the sky has lightened up just a little bit.
00:06:15So we're looking forward to starting this race just any time now.
00:06:18Danny Sullivan, along with the rest of the drivers,
00:06:20stands waiting for the command to climb in the cars and then start engines.
00:06:25We'll be back with more from the Milwaukee Mile.
00:06:28Consecutive pole on a one-mile oval.
00:06:30Outside is Danny Sullivan,
00:06:32who finished second here in his championship season of 1988.
00:06:35The second row, Michael Andretti,
00:06:37a back-to-back winner here in 86 and 87.
00:06:39His father is outside.
00:06:41He has four victories and over 4,500 miles to his credit on this historic course.
00:06:46Inside row three is Bobby Rahal,
00:06:48the runner-up here in 82 and 87.
00:06:50And Emerson Fittipaldi,
00:06:51only one of his 11 victories have come on one-mile ovals.
00:06:55The fourth row, Scott Brayton,
00:06:56a steady drive last week,
00:06:57earned him a seventh finishing position at Indy.
00:07:00And Tao Fabi, who finished third in this event one year ago.
00:07:04Allenser Jr. is still looking for his first win on an oval.
00:07:07Raul Boisel notched an impressive fourth-place finish
00:07:10in his last two appearances here.
00:07:12The sixth row on the inside, John Andretti,
00:07:14the second member of the Porsche team,
00:07:16making his second start at Milwaukee.
00:07:18And A.J. Boyk, who made his second career IndyCar start here in 1957
00:07:23and won $127.
00:07:26Scott Goodyear making his first start here.
00:07:29And Eddie Cheever has two top-ten finishes
00:07:32and three starts this year.
00:07:34The eighth row, Ari Leyondyke,
00:07:36earned $1.1 million in last week's Indianapolis 500.
00:07:41And Jeff Andretti,
00:07:42fourth member of the famous Andretti racing family,
00:07:45making his first IndyCar start.
00:07:47The ninth row, Poncho Carter,
00:07:49he's making his 17th start here at Milwaukee.
00:07:52And Dean Hall, who drew a great deal of attention
00:07:54with his smooth performance at Indianapolis.
00:07:57The tenth row, Tony Bettenhausen,
00:07:59his first start at Milwaukee, met at him ninth place in 1979.
00:08:03And Randy Lewis, a veteran driver,
00:08:05making only his fourth start on the Milwaukee mile.
00:08:08And Roberto Guerrero,
00:08:10starting at the rear after a pair of crashes yesterday.
00:08:16And the command just given to all of the drivers to climb in their cars,
00:08:20Danny Sullivan already there, he anticipated that
00:08:22because it got nice and bright here over the main straightaway.
00:08:25And there is little doubt now, we are going to go racing,
00:08:28and it should be a great afternoon.
00:08:30Now, we mentioned Rick Mears on the pole,
00:08:32but his pole speed is about three miles an hour faster
00:08:36than the track record he sat here qualifying on the pole last year.
00:08:40Bobby, what's happened?
00:08:41Well, Paul, last year,
00:08:43Cart decided that the cars were just going a little bit too fast,
00:08:46so they changed the rules to slow them down a little bit.
00:08:48Now, at Indianapolis and at Phoenix,
00:08:50it didn't really seem to make any difference
00:08:52because they ran about the same speeds as they did last year.
00:08:55But here at Milwaukee, this is a flat racetrack,
00:08:58very little banking to help the cars do the turns,
00:09:01so what's happened is they've slowed down here
00:09:03about three to four miles an hour.
00:09:05Now, it would appear that the rules makers
00:09:07kind of won the battle over whether to slow the cars down or not,
00:09:10but in the outcome, the race is going to be just as fast,
00:09:15and people keep asking,
00:09:17does it really make a difference if you're going to hit the wall,
00:09:20if the car's doing 150 miles an hour or 160 miles an hour?
00:09:23And I say it doesn't really make that much difference.
00:09:26That comes from a man who's hit the wall at both 150, 160,
00:09:29and a few above that.
00:09:31So we're looking forward to the start of the Milwaukee 200
00:09:35here on the Milwaukee Mile.
00:09:37We'll be back right after this.
00:09:39Milwaukee, there's the weather forecast for the afternoon.
00:09:42The wind's really blowing over the top of this track, though.
00:09:45The past few minutes, they've died down a bit.
00:09:47A chance of showers. We've had one,
00:09:49but it's moved through the area,
00:09:51and certainly the hope is to get this race in.
00:09:53It will make it a very, very tactical race once the action begins.
00:09:57Let's go down the main straightaway. Here's Gary Gerald.
00:10:03At the head of the grid pole, Danny Sullivan,
00:10:05a week ago at Indianapolis,
00:10:07encountered a problem with a wheel bearing in the right rear early in the race.
00:10:10Got into the crash wall turn number one, fortunately not injured.
00:10:13He's back in Milwaukee, and he's back with a vengeance.
00:10:15He sets outside his teammate in the front row,
00:10:18second pass. Danny, the question, I guess, is going to be, however,
00:10:21your teammate 3 1⁄2 miles an hour faster.
00:10:23What's the key for you to be competitive,
00:10:25to keep the pace and have a shot at victory here at Milwaukee?
00:10:28Well, I think the big thing is just stay with him,
00:10:30try to stay on the lead lap.
00:10:32But we're going to have to conserve the tires and the car
00:10:35because they seem to be giving up after about 50 laps.
00:10:38All of this threatening weather.
00:10:40How much is that going to play into strategy now in this race?
00:10:43Well, the race can be called after 101 laps.
00:10:47So you don't want to get too far back.
00:10:49You want to stay there in case the weather goes bad
00:10:52right around the halfway distance.
00:10:54And a quick question about the wind.
00:10:56You had a practice session this morning after the rain out yesterday afternoon.
00:10:59It was very windy. How will that affect drivers today?
00:11:02Well, it bothers you quite a bit coming off the turn two,
00:11:06but it's not too bad every place else.
00:11:08It's the same for everybody,
00:11:10so we're not going to have to worry about it too much.
00:11:13Danny Sullivan alongside teammate Rick Mears,
00:11:15ready to go here at Milwaukee, Paul, in the front row.
00:11:18And here's what's on the line today.
00:11:20Over $700,000 one mile around this course, 200 laps.
00:11:24Rick Mears is the defending champion.
00:11:26It's very, very flat here.
00:11:28Danny Sullivan already indicated to you
00:11:30that this will probably be very tactical.
00:11:33In fact, back in the pit areas,
00:11:35they have very special weather radios
00:11:38and communications with flight service
00:11:40so they can find out what the weather may do
00:11:42within the next few minutes.
00:11:45Now, let's go to the straightaway once again,
00:11:47and here is Jack A Root.
00:11:48And, Paul, I'm with Ron Strain,
00:11:50who's the vice president of finance for the Miller Brewing Company,
00:11:52for those great familiar words.
00:11:54Mr. Strain?
00:11:55Gentlemen, start your engines!
00:12:00All right!
00:12:03Now turn the ignition to the tower!
00:12:30So they're ready.
00:12:3221 IndyCars.
00:12:34Unlike last week, the rows will be of two.
00:12:37A smaller, a shorter, a tighter course.
00:12:40They call it a full ring on board.
00:12:42Live shot from Allens, her junior.
00:12:45We hope to have plenty of those for you
00:12:47throughout the afternoon.
00:12:48You can still see a little bit of that
00:12:50when we get to the finish line.
00:12:52All right!
00:12:53Let's go!
00:12:56We hope to have plenty of those for you
00:12:58throughout the afternoon.
00:12:59You can still see a little residue of the rain
00:13:01on the edge of his windshield
00:13:02on the right side of the screen there.
00:13:04But little Al appears unconcerned.
00:13:06You're looking over Bobby Rahal's shoulder
00:13:08as they step aside.
00:13:11And the field starts to roll out.
00:13:17The view backwards now.
00:13:21These are the engines in this field.
00:13:24And, of course, the powerhouse, in fact,
00:13:27in IndyCar racing right now.
00:13:29The chassis, well, Alola won last week.
00:13:32But again, most of the experts really feel
00:13:34that it's the Penske chassis
00:13:35that sit on the front row here
00:13:37that are still presenting the greatest challenge.
00:13:42Look back at blue and yellow SDP Preco car.
00:13:45Here's Bobby Rahal.
00:13:46The Amway car number 22 is Scott Brayton.
00:13:50And let's go down to his pit now.
00:13:51Here's Jack Aroo.
00:13:52And there's reason for Scott Brayton to be very excited.
00:13:54They say all week that he was first in class
00:13:56at Indianapolis, the first Cosworth.
00:13:58You see Dick Simon.
00:13:59This is the second year
00:14:00that Scott Brayton has been driving for him.
00:14:02And this is the best that they have ever qualified
00:14:04for Milwaukee Mile.
00:14:05One of the reasons Dick Simon says
00:14:07is because the crew is gelled
00:14:08and also because of the fact that for the first time
00:14:10they have a complete testing program in place
00:14:13for 1990, Paul.
00:14:15So Dick Simon's ready to go,
00:14:17watching his driver here,
00:14:18the former winners in this field.
00:14:20Boyton.
00:14:21Mario Andretti have 4H.
00:14:22Rick Mears with 3.
00:14:23Michael with 2.
00:14:30Taking a look back now
00:14:31from the rear of Michael Andretti's car.
00:14:35As he sits up in front of Bobby Rahal.
00:14:38Michael with 2 victories here.
00:14:40Very definitely a contender on board.
00:14:42Al Unser Jr.
00:14:44He looks almost casual.
00:14:46As he glances about.
00:14:48Noting these grandstands here.
00:14:50The points right now.
00:14:51He, of course, is the point leader with 48.
00:14:55But this is a nice tight fight.
00:14:5720 points available for winning this race.
00:15:00Rick Mears has already earned one.
00:15:02Loris sitting on the pole.
00:15:03Also a point available for the fastest,
00:15:06for the leading the most laps in a race.
00:15:08Rick Mears working his way around.
00:15:10Let's go to Gary Gerald in the Penske pit.
00:15:12We're looking at the telemetry
00:15:13where Peter Gibbons and Paul Rochette
00:15:15will keep track of the performance
00:15:16of Rick Mears' car throughout the day today.
00:15:18The acknowledged master of the short oval.
00:15:20He won at Phoenix this year.
00:15:21He's won the last two years at Milwaukee.
00:15:23Remember, Paul, he won his first ever IndyCar race
00:15:26right here on this track 12 years ago, 1978.
00:15:29Paul?
00:15:30Well, that bodes well for Rick.
00:15:33As one car, that's Jeff Andretti's,
00:15:35the number 27 car.
00:15:37Jeff was about to make his first start
00:15:40in an IndyCar race and make it here at Milwaukee.
00:15:42But obviously, that will not happen at the moment.
00:15:45As the team pushes that car behind the wall,
00:15:48certainly they're in hopes that they will get it going.
00:15:51Well, Paul, this is a nice day, I might mention.
00:15:53The wind is up, but it's died down a little bit
00:15:55from what it was earlier.
00:15:56The track is going to be clean.
00:15:58Yeah, but you saw a drop of water there.
00:16:00You can see a little bit,
00:16:01and one of the things drivers are going to worry about
00:16:03is whether the rain is going to come real quick.
00:16:05Let's go to Jack Arood.
00:16:07Paul, Barry Green and the Craig O'Gallis team
00:16:09are very concerned today.
00:16:11Concerned that they found some speed this morning.
00:16:13They hope they can carry it through the race.
00:16:15You see, they were the fastest
00:16:16in the early morning practice today.
00:16:18And one of the things to remember about this team
00:16:20is all the hoopla has been about his teammate Al Unser Jr.
00:16:23in the two oval races at Phoenix and Indianapolis
00:16:25so far this year.
00:16:26They have finished second with Bobby Rahal aboard.
00:16:29And the presence of Bobby Rahal on that Gallas-Craco team
00:16:33has added a whole new dimension to how they operate
00:16:36and certainly has been a challenge to Al.
00:16:38Winnings this year,
00:16:39Ari Lyondyke, of course, picked up 1.1 million of that
00:16:43for winning the Indianapolis 500 last week.
00:16:45The IndyPurr is really giving a boost to the earnings
00:16:47so far this year.
00:16:50Mario and Michael Andretti,
00:16:51they will start in the second row,
00:16:54and Gary Gerald is in the Neumann-Haas pits.
00:16:56This is the team, of course, Paul,
00:16:57that backs both Mario and Michael Andretti.
00:16:59Disappointment again last week at Indianapolis,
00:17:01but right now, this team getting ready
00:17:03for Mario's 30-second start at Milwaukee,
00:17:06hoping to rekindle the magic
00:17:08that has produced four victories on this track,
00:17:10but it's been nearly two years since his last IndyCar win.
00:17:13They'd love to break that streak here today.
00:17:16And Michael Andretti will be making his 100th IndyCar start
00:17:20here today at Milwaukee.
00:17:22Jeff Andretti, they're working on the back of that car.
00:17:25This would be historic if Jeff Andretti
00:17:27was able to be in the race,
00:17:29four members of one family in a IndyCar race,
00:17:33if Jeff Andretti can start.
00:17:35And as I watch him working on that car,
00:17:37it didn't seem to me like they were in too much of a hurry,
00:17:39so it must be terminal.
00:17:40Jeff Andretti, of course,
00:17:42Michael Andretti's brother, son of Mario,
00:17:45been very successful in other forms of racing,
00:17:48and now, with his dad's help,
00:17:50is hoping for an opportunity to do well in the IndyCars.
00:17:53You see still some drops of rain there,
00:17:56but the pace car is out in front of the field.
00:17:58And, Paul, a little bit of rain really won't hurt anything.
00:18:00As long as the track doesn't actually get wet,
00:18:02the driver's gonna be all right.
00:18:04Let's go down to the pit area.
00:18:05Jack Arood is in Jeff's pit.
00:18:07Paul, this is a disappointment for Jeff Andretti.
00:18:09He's won here at Milwaukee in ARS competition.
00:18:11In fact, he was the first driver to get in his car.
00:18:13When it was raining, he was covered under the tarp.
00:18:15He was ready to go.
00:18:17The car did not fire upon the command to fire engines.
00:18:20They have taken a look at the electronics.
00:18:22Now they think there may be a problem
00:18:23with the fuel management system,
00:18:25but really, right now, they're just guessing.
00:18:27They're not quite certain what the situation will bring.
00:18:31Well, Jack, this is their backup engine.
00:18:33They blew their front-line engine yesterday
00:18:35when Jeff was running extremely well
00:18:37and looked like he might qualify in the middle of the field.
00:18:40And now, if you're thinking we've run a little bit long
00:18:42on the pace laps, indeed we have.
00:18:44The pace car is out in front of the field,
00:18:46and they're putting in some extra laps now.
00:18:48The crowd, they're poised.
00:18:50They anticipate a start.
00:18:52But, of course, the cart officials want to make sure,
00:18:54absolutely sure, in fact,
00:18:56that this is a dry race course when the green flag comes out.
00:18:59But as the pace car headed into the turn there,
00:19:01you saw the lights go out,
00:19:02which tells the pole sitter, Rick Mears,
00:19:04that they are ready for a green flag
00:19:06and they are ready to start.
00:19:07So Mears brings the field off of the fourth turn.
00:19:10The crowd, well, they all come to their feet,
00:19:12and we are ready to go on the Milwaukee mile
00:19:15as Nick Funaro gives it the green flag.
00:19:17And they bunch up, heading down to the first turn,
00:19:20with Sullivan moving to the outside
00:19:22and picking up the lead from his teammate, Mears.
00:19:25And Mears seems to slow down just a bit
00:19:28as they come onto the backstretch.
00:19:30And Ruddy comes up, moves into second place.
00:19:33That's Mario making a move now down for the inside.
00:19:36Boy, you can bet you Rick Mears didn't have his boost up just right, Paul,
00:19:39because he didn't take off with the rest of the cars at all.
00:19:41In fact, he went backwards bad.
00:19:42Boy, look at this as Mario and Ruddy comes around.
00:19:45Danny Sullivan picks up the lead.
00:19:47His son, Michael, moves into third place,
00:19:49chasing Sullivan now.
00:19:50Good move for Mario on the start.
00:19:53Now, Mario's got to really know his car's sticking good
00:19:56to take on the first lap
00:19:57and gain as much as he gains, going like he's already going.
00:20:00Well, the Haviland Kmart car moves out in front.
00:20:03Al Unser Jr. moved from ninth to fifth on that first lap.
00:20:07There is little Al as he is in pursuit of a victory here,
00:20:10his first Opel victory ever.
00:20:12Danny Sullivan runs in second.
00:20:14There's little Al after making his move around Michael.
00:20:17Now, little Al's going to have a different chassis setup, Paul,
00:20:20than what they had even when he qualified.
00:20:22What they've done with his car is copied Rahal's,
00:20:25because Rahal has had the fastest car.
00:20:27It's a filter copy, now chassis-wise.
00:20:30So out in front of this field, moving up from the second row,
00:20:33is Mario Andretti on board with Bobby Rahal right now
00:20:36as he threads his way around.
00:20:38Rahal running back out of the top five,
00:20:40raises his hand to acknowledge the sign from his pit crew.
00:20:44From time to time, though, you may see the drivers point to the sky.
00:20:48They are probably the best gauge of whether or not
00:20:51there's too much moisture to go racing.
00:20:53There's a lot of moisture there on that on-board camera on Andretti.
00:20:56And what they do is they come by the starter,
00:20:58and they point their finger up.
00:21:00That's the signal they give to Nick Firono.
00:21:02Hey, it's raining up there. Pay attention to it.
00:21:05They really have to race this race as if it was a 100-mile race,
00:21:09because that's the distance at which it becomes official.
00:21:11It's really a trophy dash, a real sprint.
00:21:17The battle closes behind Sullivan now
00:21:19as Michael closes in, comes to the inside,
00:21:22takes a shot at Danny Sullivan.
00:21:24And Sullivan riding just ahead of this live on-board shot
00:21:27from Michael Andretti as they work their way to the main stretch.
00:21:30You mentioned that this is Michael's 100th race.
00:21:32His first race in IndyCar competition was back in Las Vegas in 1983.
00:21:37Boy, Michael brings it right down almost on top of the dirt.
00:21:41Danny Sullivan decides this kid wants it real bad.
00:21:43I think I'll just move over a little to the right.
00:21:45And he pokes his nose in as well.
00:21:47Now, that gives you an idea how wide this track is
00:21:49and how many different grooves.
00:21:51Wow, there, Paul. They were three abreast and passing while they were doing it.
00:21:55On board with Rahal. That's Michael just ahead of him.
00:21:57So, these cars all running right together.
00:21:59There's Rahal lined up, Rick Mears to the inside of Rahal.
00:22:02Michael Andretti sweeps across the front.
00:22:04Again, he tries Sullivan as now they begin to encounter some traffic.
00:22:08Now, keep in mind, Paul, everybody is like a trophy dash,
00:22:12all knowing that they have to be in the front in case it rains, number one,
00:22:16because if the race stops, they're going to want to start ahead of the other guy.
00:22:19So, right now, they're going like it was the last lap of the race.
00:22:22A pass for the lead as look at Al Unser.
00:22:24He just came up on the homestretch right behind Mario and picked up the lead of the race.
00:22:29You indicated, Bobby, that he would try and do just that.
00:22:32And look at little Al. He's flying now.
00:22:34And other than this morning, that's a brand-new race car to him,
00:22:37like he's starting all over again.
00:22:38But they've been floundering.
00:22:40And now he's found what he needs for the ovals.
00:22:42From ninth to first in just six laps.
00:22:44And as Bobby says, he's found what he needs for the ovals.
00:22:47Remember this amazing historic fact.
00:22:49The successful little Al is.
00:22:51He has never won a major race on an oval. Never.
00:22:56So, the Valvoline car of Al Unser Jr. moves to the front.
00:22:59Mario and Freddie picked up the lead on the green flag,
00:23:02jumping up from the second row.
00:23:04The surprise seems to be the Penske cars,
00:23:07as Rick Mears has fallen back all the way to sixth place now.
00:23:11Change of last week's Indianapolis 500.
00:23:13And I think all of us kind of halfway expected Rick
00:23:16to just dominate and maybe run away with this race.
00:23:19But obviously, they've made some sort of mistake.
00:23:21And there is Rick Mears as he works his way under his teammate Danny Sullivan
00:23:25and picks up the position.
00:23:27Most likely what happened is the weather changes, the boost pressure changes.
00:23:30Most likely, he just had to reset his boost control knob inside the car.
00:23:34And as you can see, he's gaining some of his speed back now.
00:23:37Apparently, Rick Mears has now found the footing for the Pennzoil car.
00:23:40Other people have won two Milwaukees back-to-back.
00:23:44No one has ever run three in a row.
00:23:46Rick Mears has a chance to do it.
00:23:48But as you said, he's made an uncharacteristically bad start.
00:23:52Well, there is Mears now running in fifth.
00:23:54We're on board with Bobby Rahal once again.
00:23:56He runs right behind Michael Andretti
00:23:58as Michael threads it down in the turn.
00:24:00Look at those angry clouds overhead.
00:24:02They can play a part in this day's race.
00:24:05On to the home stretch.
00:24:06Michael is able to pull out just a bit, but not that far.
00:24:09Rahal still very definitely in contention.
00:24:11We see the angry clouds, but the drivers probably do not.
00:24:15The track here is very rough,
00:24:16and you have to concentrate on the pavement right in front of you.
00:24:19And you see all of the cars in the lead have been dicing with other cars.
00:24:23So your concentration is on that car in front,
00:24:25and only subliminally do they see those clouds.
00:24:28This is the battle for third place between Michael and Bobby Rahal.
00:24:32Out in front, it's Allender Jr. followed by Mario Andretti.
00:24:35And this, of course, is Carl Haas.
00:24:37He is the car owner for both Michael and Mario's cars.
00:24:40No smoking allowed in the pits, Carl.
00:24:42But, of course, he never lights the cigar.
00:24:44He just chews on it.
00:24:45Oh, because he's nervous.
00:24:47And he's chewed through more than a couple of cigars on some of these races,
00:24:50especially here.
00:24:51Bobby Rahal, he runs in fourth.
00:24:53They work their way past Tony Fentonhouse in the AMAX car.
00:24:57Now, this morning, remember,
00:24:58Bobby Rahal was the fastest car on the track.
00:25:01Right now, he's trying to pass young Michael,
00:25:04but he's not the fastest car at the moment.
00:25:06Jeff Andretti is finally underway,
00:25:08but he came out 12 laps behind the leader.
00:25:11Look at Rahal trying to thread alongside of Michael.
00:25:14He moves to both sides.
00:25:15Now, he comes high into the corner.
00:25:18Michael won back-to-back races here in 87 and 88, 86 and 87.
00:25:24And the second year that he won, his dad, Mario,
00:25:27had a bad accident right here in turn one.
00:25:30And Michael, during the caution period that followed,
00:25:33watched them remove his dad from the car, load him in the hospital.
00:25:37It was a very emotional, difficult time.
00:25:39Fortunately, today, dad Mario is running much stronger.
00:25:43The same moisture that you see on the onboard camera,
00:25:45Bobby, I'm sure the drivers will, from time to time,
00:25:48see on the face mask on their helmet.
00:25:51When you do, does that worry you?
00:25:53Well, it does.
00:25:54What they're worried about is a big shower
00:25:56that I started to mention earlier that would come down
00:25:58and they wouldn't have time to see it.
00:26:00But ironically, that probably won't happen
00:26:02because the clouds today are just dribbling it down.
00:26:06That's for certain, sure.
00:26:07The fight continues between Michael Andretti and Bobby Rahal for third.
00:26:11We talked about the tradition here.
00:26:12It used to be a dirt track until the mid-'50s when it was paved.
00:26:16It's gotten very rough over the last few years,
00:26:18and you see them all struggling with those bumps.
00:26:21The fight continues.
00:26:22The rain continues to hold off,
00:26:24and we're running on the Milwaukee Mile.
00:26:26Al Unser Jr. is out in front,
00:26:28looking for his first Oval victory in the IndyCars
00:26:31here at the Miller Genuine Grab 200.
00:26:34Right now, little Al is leading by 4.2 seconds over Mario Andretti.
00:26:43...else to be raced here.
00:26:44The leader is Al Unser Jr.
00:26:46He's averaging just over 141 miles an hour each lap,
00:26:50and just a few seconds ago, he worked his way past Ari Leyendijk,
00:26:54who's running in 12th place.
00:26:56Shelly Unser watches from the scoring stand.
00:26:58The skies may be gray overhead as we take a look at the fight for second
00:27:02between Mario Andretti and Michael Andretti,
00:27:04a family feud going on here.
00:27:06Well, the skies are gray.
00:27:08The air is heavy and moist,
00:27:10and these engines love it.
00:27:12161 cubic inches, turbocharged,
00:27:15developing nearly 800 horsepower.
00:27:17They love this kind of air.
00:27:18They're definitely going to make more horsepower because of that,
00:27:21very much like you say.
00:27:23But also, the tires are going to like it.
00:27:25The pavement is cold.
00:27:26It's nice and cool.
00:27:28It's crisp, and it's clean.
00:27:30Mark Boyd and Danny Sullivan battle with one another for seventh place
00:27:33as Boyd comes down inside Danny,
00:27:36and Boyd's going to try him.
00:27:38AJ was third fastest in the warm-up this morning,
00:27:41so he is a real threat.
00:27:42This is not a fluke.
00:27:43And yesterday, when AJ was practicing in front of Mario,
00:27:46he got hit.
00:27:47And look at him go ahead.
00:27:48AJ Boyd moves up.
00:27:50Well, right in here yesterday, AJ had a big slide, and he corrected.
00:27:54Here's a man 55 years old who had the reflexes
00:27:57to bring that slide back under control.
00:27:59And Mario drove alongside him, gave him a big thumbs-up,
00:28:02and they laughed about it afterwards.
00:28:04Now, Sam, Boyd's another guy that totally changed his car
00:28:07from qualifying till now.
00:28:09And it's obviously working a whole lot better.
00:28:11The Copenhagen car, AJ Boyd,
00:28:13works his way into seventh place by getting around Danny Sullivan.
00:28:16Let's go to the pits.
00:28:17Gary Gerald.
00:28:18Roger Penske, Richard Buck, the Rick Mears team,
00:28:20all on the wall waiting for their car.
00:28:23They put tires and equipment up as if they might bring it in early.
00:28:26Thus, it would be a three-stop race.
00:28:27On the board, no indication.
00:28:29They were conservative on the start
00:28:31only because of the cold racetrack call.
00:28:33They said there's no problem with the car.
00:28:35Rick seems to be happy with the balance and the setup.
00:28:38Let's go up pit road to Jackaroo.
00:28:40Gary, with a marked contrast down here in the Allancer Junior kit,
00:28:43they will not tell us when their first scheduled pit stop.
00:28:46The reason, they don't think this race is going to go the distance.
00:28:49So now they're recalculating everything.
00:28:51They're trying to think more in terms of 101 laps
00:28:54versus the normal 200 laps.
00:28:57As a matter of fact, computer technology has jumped into IndyCar racing.
00:29:02Every one of those scoring stands will have one, two,
00:29:05maybe as many as four little laptop computers
00:29:08and sometimes larger than that
00:29:10as they calculate fuel mileage, everything they can.
00:29:13Now, Bobby Hunter, the suggestion was
00:29:15you had to make it at least to 65 miles and stop
00:29:19and then carry another 70 miles
00:29:21if you were going to make it a two-stop race,
00:29:23which is, of course, everybody's objective.
00:29:25Well, you can tell how hard everybody's running right now.
00:29:28They're turning very fast speeds.
00:29:29And what that means is they're going to use more fuel.
00:29:31Most of them have two gears in the transmission,
00:29:33one for racing and one for what you call cruising,
00:29:36if you can call this cruising sometimes.
00:29:38But what they're doing now is they're using up more fuel.
00:29:41Most of them are probably going to be looking for pit stops
00:29:44around 60 miles if we don't have a yellow or 60 laps.
00:29:48And that's what they're going to do,
00:29:49is they're going to say to themselves and the team,
00:29:51we have to stay ahead all the time in case it rains.
00:29:54The number-one car is Emerson Fittipaldi.
00:29:56He currently runs in fifth place
00:29:58as he works down into the first turn.
00:30:00But, Bobby, if they do use the boost
00:30:03and they do go hard on it the whole way
00:30:06and it does not rain, what then?
00:30:08Sam, racing is always a gamble, as both you and I know.
00:30:12And they're going to gamble today
00:30:13because winning is the only thing that's important in this business.
00:30:16On board now with Al Unser Jr.
00:30:18He leads this race.
00:30:19A team very conscious of fuel.
00:30:22Rick Gallis keeps track of this car.
00:30:24They've had trouble predicting their fuel stoppage positions last year,
00:30:29and certainly they're well aware of it today.
00:30:31Well, Milwaukee traditionally,
00:30:33you see the two Andrettis, father and son, here.
00:30:36Milwaukee traditionally is a race coming a week after Indy
00:30:39where those that were frustrated at Indy
00:30:42finally get to do something about it.
00:30:44And, of course, if you look at the leaderboard right now,
00:30:46the men on top, Al Unser Jr., the two Andrettis,
00:30:49Bobby Rahal, and Emerson Fittipaldi,
00:30:51were all men deeply frustrated by what happened last week.
00:30:55Michael chases his father.
00:30:57Michael runs in third, chasing for second.
00:30:59You saw they threaded their way past Roberto Guerrero,
00:31:02who started in last place in the Alfa Romeo car.
00:31:05He's working a tough, tough race today
00:31:08after spinning and cutting the wall twice here in practice.
00:31:11Now, look at the different groups
00:31:12as we got the on-board camera going.
00:31:14Look at the different groups, even between father and son.
00:31:17You can just see their cars are not always set exactly the same.
00:31:21This is a big day for the Andrettis.
00:31:23They have not run this well as a team
00:31:26since the middle of last year at the Michigan 500.
00:31:29This will breathe a lot of light into this organization,
00:31:32which really needs a shot in the arm.
00:31:34One of the cars you've already noticed suffering a problem
00:31:37is the 7 car of Danny Sullivan.
00:31:39Let's get an update from Gary Gerald.
00:31:41Danny Sullivan has got a handling problem,
00:31:43the crew tells us that they've tried to adjust
00:31:45everything they can in the cockpit to get rid of it.
00:31:47He's still not comfortable.
00:31:48We anticipate when they come in at the first available opportunity,
00:31:52first yellow, or when they get in the window,
00:31:54that they'll make a wing adjustment
00:31:55to try to improve the handling characteristic.
00:31:57Same problem for Michael Andretti,
00:31:59even though Michael is running in the top three.
00:32:01They expect that they'll have to make an adjustment
00:32:03when he makes his first stop, Paul.
00:32:05And Rick Mears, very close to being lapped as well
00:32:08as Allenser Jr. is setting a flustering pace.
00:32:11Rick is only about four seconds out in front
00:32:14of Allenser Jr. on this course.
00:32:16Of course, Rick Mears is running in sixth position.
00:32:19As you see the leader, Allenser Jr.,
00:32:22they're extraordinary for the second consecutive week
00:32:25to see the Penske team in this much trouble.
00:32:28They are the best finance team,
00:32:30best organized team in the business,
00:32:32but it does not mean they can win all the races.
00:32:35I'm going to mention on the handling, Paul,
00:32:38is that the track is different.
00:32:40It's clean, it rained on it,
00:32:41it's different than it was yesterday.
00:32:43But what they can change in the cockpit,
00:32:45and the only thing they can change
00:32:46is the anti-roll bars, or what's called the sway bars.
00:32:49They can make them stiffer and softer.
00:32:51That's the only thing that the driver can do
00:32:53until he comes in the pits.
00:32:54And that makes one end of the car or the other
00:32:57stick better, depending on how they take it
00:32:59or loosen it up, right?
00:33:00Yes, it does, Paul,
00:33:01and it's really quite a minor adjustment.
00:33:03The car has to be relatively close,
00:33:05otherwise it won't do much for his feet.
00:33:07Still over 141 miles an hour
00:33:09as Allender Jr. really works out toward that wall.
00:33:12Watch him work his course.
00:33:14Drifting way out there.
00:33:15Allender Jr. out in front.
00:33:17The Andretti's battle for second and third
00:33:19with Bobby Ray Hall in fourth,
00:33:21followed by Fittipaldi.
00:33:22We'll be right back with more from Milwaukee Mile.
00:33:27Milwaukee Mile, where we've just gone yellow.
00:33:29That's Randy Lewis sitting up there
00:33:31in the number 12 Amp car.
00:33:33He was running alongside of Allender Jr.,
00:33:36the leader of the race,
00:33:37when they both lost the back end.
00:33:39Both of them went into a quick spin,
00:33:41and the yellow has been brought out
00:33:43as a result of this.
00:33:48And the good news is
00:33:49that little Al didn't touch anything
00:33:51and was able to keep going.
00:33:52You see the emergency crews
00:33:54rolling to the aid of Randy Lewis,
00:33:56who sits up against the wall,
00:33:57and here is the leader.
00:33:58Let's go to Jack Arood.
00:34:00Paul, a quick survey by the Gallus crew
00:34:02shows that they've flat-spotted all four tires,
00:34:04so they will change tires and take on fuel.
00:34:07But other than that,
00:34:08it looks like a nominal stop for Allender Jr.
00:34:11He is off and away.
00:34:12Let's go to Gary Gerald.
00:34:13And both Dan Bredes come in in tandem.
00:34:15It's Mario behind Michael
00:34:17as far as pit position is concerned.
00:34:19It's both left side of Mario.
00:34:21Everything looks good for Michael.
00:34:23Routine with the tire change.
00:34:24They do it up to the luxury of the yellow,
00:34:26and Mario will beat his son
00:34:27out of the pits cleanly.
00:34:29Paul?
00:34:30So under the yellow,
00:34:31all of the leaders making a stop.
00:34:33Little Al was in and out in 12 seconds.
00:34:35This comes at the 43rd mile,
00:34:37so Bobby Unser, right now,
00:34:38it's a three-stop race.
00:34:39Yes, it is, Paul,
00:34:40but it couldn't come at a better time
00:34:41because everybody kind of agreed
00:34:43that if they went to 20 laps
00:34:44and it came yellow,
00:34:45they would all pit.
00:34:46Well, this came at 40-some odd laps,
00:34:4842 laps,
00:34:49so it's a perfect time to pit.
00:34:51All right, let's go back
00:34:52and take a look at what happened.
00:34:53There was quite a pack running together there.
00:34:55There is Little Al
00:34:56threading to the outside of Randy Lewis,
00:34:58and they touched.
00:34:59But look at that.
00:35:01Look, as the other cars thread their way through,
00:35:03Little Al gets it back under control
00:35:05and is able to keep it rolling.
00:35:07Well, what happened there
00:35:08is Little Al was passing on the outside,
00:35:10passing Randy on the outside,
00:35:11and Randy, obviously,
00:35:12Lewis didn't see him,
00:35:13so he was squeezing Little Al into the wall.
00:35:15He could only go out so far,
00:35:17and then he had to stop.
00:35:18That's when they touched.
00:35:19Randy Lewis has had problems
00:35:21with what is called understeer
00:35:22or pushing off that turn
00:35:24both days of practice,
00:35:25and it's very hard,
00:35:26even if he had seen Little Al there,
00:35:28for him to be able to tuck it in enough.
00:35:30And Danny Sullivan
00:35:31had to climb all over the brakes
00:35:33to keep from going into those spinning cars.
00:35:36Allenser Jr. now lined up behind the pace car.
00:35:39We have yet another angle of that accident,
00:35:43and we will take a very close look
00:35:45when we come back
00:35:46with more from Wisconsin State Fair Park
00:35:49in the Miller Genuine Draft 200.
00:35:57We're back on the Milwaukee Mile,
00:35:5946 miles are complete,
00:36:01and we go green flag racing once again
00:36:03with Allenser Jr. out in front.
00:36:05In second place is Mario Andretti,
00:36:07followed by Michael
00:36:08as Michael closes up on his dad.
00:36:10Right behind them in fourth place
00:36:11is Bobby Rahal,
00:36:12then Fittipaldi,
00:36:13then Rick Mears.
00:36:14There's the family battle.
00:36:15Matter of fact,
00:36:16that on the inside
00:36:17is Tao Fabi and the Porsche
00:36:19as they work their way
00:36:20around the Indy champion.
00:36:22There's the Domino's car of Ari Leyondyke,
00:36:24and for the moment,
00:36:25he separates Mario and Michael.
00:36:27Boy, that's a close group.
00:36:28A lot of battling going on right there.
00:36:30Becker changing positions so fast,
00:36:32it's hard to keep up with him.
00:36:33Bobby Rahal closes down as well
00:36:36and joins this battle now
00:36:37with Allenser Jr. out in front.
00:36:39Imagine Leyondyke's frustrations
00:36:41as Rahal comes along on the inside.
00:36:44We're going to see Leyondyke, I think,
00:36:46in just a split second
00:36:47from Rahal's car,
00:36:48but Leyondyke dominant.
00:36:50Just a week ago,
00:36:51there's Leyondyke
00:36:52just on the left of the screen,
00:36:54now unable to defend himself,
00:36:56going down two laps.
00:36:58And certainly has to go through
00:37:00both those drivers' minds
00:37:01at the 168th lap of last week's race
00:37:04when Leyondyke pulled the same move
00:37:06on Bobby Rahal.
00:37:07I think the first thing
00:37:08we have to remember
00:37:09is that Leyondyke is normally
00:37:11a very good driver
00:37:12on a short track like this,
00:37:13on an oval.
00:37:14What happens is,
00:37:15the cars are not the same
00:37:16as Indianapolis.
00:37:17This is not the same car.
00:37:18It's a totally different
00:37:19aerodynamic package.
00:37:21On board with the leader,
00:37:22Allenser Jr.
00:37:23Of course, Ari would particularly like
00:37:25to have been able to do well
00:37:26here in Milwaukee,
00:37:27which is the home of his sponsor.
00:37:31All right.
00:37:32Now, we're back racing
00:37:33under the green flag,
00:37:34but of course,
00:37:35we've had our first yellow,
00:37:36and that was a double spin.
00:37:37Here is a view of that
00:37:38from Allenser Jr.'s point of view.
00:37:40That's Randy Lewis
00:37:41to the inside.
00:37:44They tap.
00:37:45You can hear it.
00:37:46Whoa, look at how close
00:37:47Sullivan and everybody else was
00:37:49as they came through.
00:37:50Boy, it's just a short of a miracle
00:37:52that there wasn't just
00:37:53a numerous car wreck
00:37:54right there, Paul.
00:37:55I've never seen one
00:37:56such a good possibility.
00:37:57An even greater miracle
00:37:58is that he was able
00:37:59to get it under control,
00:38:00stay in the lead,
00:38:01make his pit stop,
00:38:02and come back out in the lead.
00:38:03Let's take a look
00:38:04at it one more time.
00:38:05Created the yellow
00:38:06when they need it.
00:38:07Here he is now.
00:38:08He's coming right up
00:38:09around Randy Lewis.
00:38:10Now, little Al has no room
00:38:11to go because it becomes
00:38:12a funnel.
00:38:13There's the wall.
00:38:14There's no room to go.
00:38:15Randy bumps him,
00:38:16and you can tell
00:38:17little Al didn't think
00:38:18that it was going to happen
00:38:19by the way he reacted
00:38:20with the steering wheel.
00:38:21Look at him as little Al
00:38:22steers the car in reverse,
00:38:24locks him up.
00:38:25Here comes Sullivan
00:38:26just barely getting past
00:38:28little Al,
00:38:29and look at him catch it.
00:38:30He catches the car
00:38:31just before it gets down
00:38:32to the inside.
00:38:33Did you see the right
00:38:34front tire change
00:38:35its rotation from
00:38:36backwards to forwards?
00:38:37What a wonderful piece
00:38:38of driving.
00:38:39An incredible bit of driving
00:38:42for Allenser Jr.,
00:38:44who continues his lead here.
00:38:46There is Rick Mears
00:38:47coming up behind
00:38:48Bobby Rahal
00:38:49in a battle for fourth.
00:38:50It appears that that
00:38:51pit stop may have
00:38:52helped Rick.
00:38:53Yes, it will.
00:38:54They would have adjusted
00:38:55the wings,
00:38:56and of course,
00:38:57that's about all
00:38:58they can adjust again
00:38:59in the pits,
00:39:00and especially
00:39:01in such a short deal.
00:39:02But watch as you watch
00:39:03the onboard cameras
00:39:04the different grooves,
00:39:05the different concepts
00:39:06that the different
00:39:07drivers have here.
00:39:08Rick Mears closes down
00:39:09on Rahal as Rahal
00:39:10moves up into
00:39:11the third position.
00:39:12That was Mario
00:39:13that they went around
00:39:14just a second ago.
00:39:15You might ask...
00:39:16And there is Mario
00:39:17pulling into the pits.
00:39:18Unscheduled stop.
00:39:19Let's go to Gary Gerald.
00:39:20Paul, the problem is
00:39:22they think they're
00:39:23losing water.
00:39:24It may be a hole
00:39:25in the radiator.
00:39:26They were hoping
00:39:27it was an overflow problem,
00:39:28but clearly there's
00:39:29an overheating problem.
00:39:30Mario reported
00:39:31that water temperature
00:39:32was rising.
00:39:33They're afraid
00:39:34they're losing the engine.
00:39:35He's in.
00:39:36The engine shut off.
00:39:37The crew's working
00:39:38under the bodywork
00:39:39on the left side pod
00:39:40right now,
00:39:41but it looks like
00:39:42the misfortune
00:39:43that plagued
00:39:44Dan Ruddy a week ago
00:39:45at Indianapolis
00:39:46may have bitten him
00:39:47here at Milwaukee.
00:39:48Paul?
00:39:49Terrible disappointment.
00:39:51Mario won here
00:39:52in 66 and 67
00:39:54and then had an
00:39:5518-year drought
00:39:56before he managed
00:39:57to win again in 85.
00:40:00So with Mario's
00:40:01withdrawal to the pits,
00:40:02Michael Androni
00:40:03assumes 2nd place.
00:40:04Bobby Rahal and Rick Mears
00:40:05move up to 3rd and 4th.
00:40:07Vinopaldi right now
00:40:08runs in 5th.
00:40:09Ari Leyendyk is 6th.
00:40:10In 7th is
00:40:11Scott Brayton.
00:40:12Tao Fabius 8th
00:40:13and Raul Boisel
00:40:14runs 9th.
00:40:15Let's go to the pits
00:40:16in Jackaroo's.
00:40:17Paul, you were mentioning
00:40:18about Bobby Rahal
00:40:19on the ground.
00:40:20He's reported to Barry Green
00:40:21as crew chief
00:40:22that the car has developed
00:40:23a loose condition.
00:40:24The car is getting
00:40:25a little bit loose.
00:40:26They say the next pit stop
00:40:27will try and add
00:40:28a little bit more wing
00:40:29and solve the problem,
00:40:30but right now
00:40:31he's got to hold on.
00:40:32And will have to hold on
00:40:33for some distance.
00:40:34They should have to get
00:40:35at least to the
00:40:36about 105th lap distance.
00:40:3850 miles, 50 laps
00:40:39are complete.
00:40:40Al Unser Jr.,
00:40:41who picked up the lead
00:40:42from Androni
00:40:43in the early going,
00:40:44spun his car
00:40:45and maintained his lead.
00:40:46It sure looks like
00:40:47Ray Hall can live
00:40:48with that problem
00:40:49for a while, Paul.
00:40:50He's still going very fast
00:40:51and it's just
00:40:52that to be perfect,
00:40:53he's going to need
00:40:54a little bit of adjustment,
00:40:55most likely to put
00:40:56a little bit of rear wing
00:40:57in the car.
00:40:58Newman Haas crew
00:40:59has not yet reported
00:41:00Mario Andretti
00:41:01out of the race.
00:41:02As a matter of fact,
00:41:03they have the car
00:41:04still sitting on the pit road
00:41:05and continue to work on it.
00:41:06We did mention
00:41:07that Jeff Andretti,
00:41:08despite his false start,
00:41:09was able to get going
00:41:10and came out of the pits
00:41:1112 laps into the run.
00:41:12And you can kind of watch.
00:41:13You watch Ray Hall
00:41:14in the front
00:41:15and Rick Beard
00:41:16right behind him
00:41:17totally two different groups.
00:41:18Rick is getting way down
00:41:19next to the grass.
00:41:20Rick isn't working
00:41:21as good here at Milwaukee
00:41:22as he normally does.
00:41:23The fight is for third place
00:41:24between Bobby Ray Hall
00:41:25and Rick Mears.
00:41:26Al Unser Jr.
00:41:27is running out in front.
00:41:28Mike Landretti
00:41:29runs alone in second place.
00:41:30That's Shelly Unser.
00:41:31And remember,
00:41:32the battle, too,
00:41:33throughout the whole decade
00:41:34of the 1980s,
00:41:35who would win
00:41:36the most races,
00:41:37that battle
00:41:38was finally resolved
00:41:39in Rick Mears' favor
00:41:40by one race
00:41:41over Bobby Ray Hall.
00:41:42So they are
00:41:43very much
00:41:44in the lead
00:41:45right now.
00:41:46So they are
00:41:47very modern racers
00:41:48who see themselves
00:41:49competing for the same thing.
00:41:50Al Unser Jr.
00:41:51works his way
00:41:52past Dean Hall
00:41:53and continues
00:41:54the lead here
00:41:55on the Milwaukee mile.
00:41:56Will it be
00:41:57his first Oval win?
00:41:58We'll be back.
00:41:59That's the tenth-place car
00:42:00of Danny Sullivan
00:42:01right alongside
00:42:02as little Al
00:42:03works down
00:42:04to the inside.
00:42:05Pulls on
00:42:06to the straight now
00:42:07and will try
00:42:08to line up,
00:42:09get some clean air
00:42:10for his wings
00:42:11and push
00:42:12his way past
00:42:13Danny Sullivan.
00:42:14But Sullivan
00:42:15isn't going to have
00:42:16any part of it.
00:42:17Well, there's two different
00:42:18grooves like we talked.
00:42:19Little Al's on the bottom
00:42:20when he probably
00:42:21doesn't want to be there.
00:42:22Danny is probably
00:42:23exactly where
00:42:24he'd like to be
00:42:25right now, Paul.
00:42:26Sullivan takes
00:42:27a high approach
00:42:28to the first
00:42:29and second turn
00:42:30and gives Al Unser Jr.
00:42:31the chance to move past.
00:42:32Now Michael Andretti
00:42:33moves up behind Sullivan.
00:42:34Michael runs
00:42:35in second place.
00:42:36Yes, Danny Sullivan
00:42:37is obviously
00:42:38among the other
00:42:39Penn State cars today.
00:42:40He's just not working
00:42:41as good as they were
00:42:42in practice.
00:42:43He's not allowed.
00:42:44As soon as he got by Danny,
00:42:45he jumped right over
00:42:46in his groove.
00:42:47That's where he
00:42:48wanted to be.
00:42:49Fairly clear sailing ahead
00:42:50for Al Unser Jr.,
00:42:51still running in the lead.
00:42:52A really big day
00:42:53going on
00:42:54for Al Unser Jr.
00:42:55because remember,
00:42:56he leads the championship
00:42:57standings.
00:42:58And if he were
00:42:59to win today,
00:43:00he would pull further
00:43:01away from
00:43:02Emerson Fittipaldi
00:43:03because Emerson
00:43:04at this point
00:43:05is running way back
00:43:06in fifth.
00:43:07Al Unser Jr.
00:43:08has been so successful
00:43:09in the Indy cars
00:43:10but has never won
00:43:11on an oval.
00:43:12There's Scott Brayton,
00:43:13the number 22 Amway car.
00:43:15He runs right now
00:43:16up toward the front
00:43:17of the field
00:43:18in sixth place.
00:43:19That's Cosworth
00:43:20power there.
00:43:21And part of their hope
00:43:22is that they will
00:43:23impress everybody
00:43:24with how well
00:43:25they have been doing
00:43:26and they have been doing
00:43:27rather well.
00:43:28Highest place
00:43:29Cosworth at Indy.
00:43:30And then perhaps
00:43:31they will be considered
00:43:32for greater sponsorship
00:43:33for more money
00:43:34and maybe for
00:43:35a Chevrolet engine.
00:43:36As we watched Scott Brayton
00:43:37during practice,
00:43:38Paul,
00:43:39he was not running
00:43:40so quick,
00:43:41not so slow,
00:43:42having a lot of problems
00:43:43and all of a sudden
00:43:44they made one change
00:43:45one second faster
00:43:46or gain one full second.
00:43:47That's a big gain.
00:43:48Scott Brayton
00:43:49has yet to score
00:43:50his first Indy car win.
00:43:51Brayton drives
00:43:52for the Dick Simon team
00:43:53which last year
00:43:54had Ari Leyendyk
00:43:55on their payroll.
00:43:56Leyendyk finally got
00:43:57a Chevrolet engine,
00:43:58joined a different team,
00:43:59Team Shearson,
00:44:00and of course
00:44:01has won the Indy 500.
00:44:02Brayton is another
00:44:03one of these
00:44:04very talented men
00:44:05who has never really
00:44:06had the equipment
00:44:07underneath him
00:44:08and just needs
00:44:09that chance
00:44:10to show his stuff.
00:44:11Scott Brayton
00:44:12now ducks into the pits
00:44:13and the question is
00:44:14is this on the timeline
00:44:15for them?
00:44:16Did they come in
00:44:17under the yellow
00:44:18or is this really
00:44:19their first stop?
00:44:20That's got to be
00:44:21a non-scheduled pit stop
00:44:22but doesn't come
00:44:23a good time for them,
00:44:24Paul.
00:44:25Well, they're at
00:44:26lap number 70.
00:44:27The leader,
00:44:28Ellington Jr.,
00:44:29kicks it off
00:44:30and they're working
00:44:31routinely.
00:44:32So Scott Brayton
00:44:33is going to
00:44:34have to
00:44:35do his best
00:44:36to get
00:44:37to the pit.
00:44:38So Scott Brayton
00:44:39gets some service
00:44:40from Dick Simon's crew.
00:44:41As a precaution,
00:44:42they spray some water
00:44:43on the fuel valve.
00:44:44All the teams do that
00:44:45just to make sure
00:44:46everything's okay.
00:44:47And in 19.9 seconds
00:44:48with a stalled engine now,
00:44:49Scott Brayton,
00:44:50Mario Andretti,
00:44:51they finally got it
00:44:52working and he's
00:44:53out on the course.
00:44:54Let's go to
00:44:55Gary Gerald.
00:44:56As we see,
00:44:57Scott Brayton's car
00:44:58pushed back
00:44:59toward the pit.
00:45:00Mario Andretti
00:45:01had just exited.
00:45:02He spent all that
00:45:03time in here.
00:45:04The crew replaced
00:45:05the radiator
00:45:06and the low left
00:45:07side pod.
00:45:08Filled it back up
00:45:09with water.
00:45:10Got him fired up.
00:45:11He's back in the race.
00:45:12But absolutely,
00:45:13of course,
00:45:14no chance to be competitive.
00:45:15Hoping that maybe
00:45:16the attrition rate
00:45:17will mean that he'll
00:45:18pick up a couple
00:45:19of championship points
00:45:20among the top 12
00:45:21finishers.
00:45:22Boy, that is splendid
00:45:23work by the Newman
00:45:24Haas crew.
00:45:25In six minutes
00:45:26and 47 seconds.
00:45:27And there is Brayton
00:45:28finally chugging his
00:45:29way out of the pit.
00:45:30Six minutes
00:45:31and 47 seconds.
00:45:32They changed
00:45:33the radiator,
00:45:34the cooler.
00:45:35It was getting hot
00:45:36when they started
00:45:37to work on it.
00:45:38Let's go to Jack Aroosh.
00:45:39Paul, in answer
00:45:40to your question
00:45:41about Scott Brayton,
00:45:42it was a normal stop,
00:45:43but it turned out
00:45:44to be an abnormal stop.
00:45:45And here's why.
00:45:46When he pitted,
00:45:47the clutch gave out.
00:45:48Now he's back out there
00:45:49with a faulty clutch.
00:45:50Back to you.
00:45:51And that explains
00:45:52why he's chugging
00:45:53out of the pits now,
00:45:54trying to make his way
00:45:55back up to speed.
00:45:56The fight is at the
00:45:57front of the field
00:45:58as Michael Andretti
00:45:59closes in on
00:46:00Al Unser Jr.
00:46:01They're separated
00:46:02only by a few feet
00:46:03and they're running
00:46:04out of gas.
00:46:05From all the
00:46:06practical standpoints,
00:46:07they're exactly the same.
00:46:08Stand up differently,
00:46:09but the car is exactly
00:46:10the same.
00:46:11That's Raul Boisel
00:46:12replacing for this year
00:46:13the injured Scott Pruitt,
00:46:14who is making
00:46:15his recovery now
00:46:16after a practice crash
00:46:17at West Palm Beach
00:46:18back in March.
00:46:19And look at Michael
00:46:20close in.
00:46:21Michael is definitely
00:46:22challenging,
00:46:23looking for his
00:46:24third win here.
00:46:25These are the two
00:46:26best young drivers
00:46:27in the business,
00:46:28in Europe or here.
00:46:29I don't care where.
00:46:30Michael Andretti
00:46:31is 27 years old.
00:46:32You see him
00:46:34here in action.
00:46:35Al Unser Jr.
00:46:36is 28.
00:46:37Believe me,
00:46:38this decade of the 90s
00:46:39is going to be a race
00:46:40for supremacy
00:46:41between these two men.
00:46:42Boy, Michael takes
00:46:43a look for his chance,
00:46:44comes down to the inside.
00:46:45There he is on board
00:46:46with little Al
00:46:47in his mirrors.
00:46:48He can see that
00:46:49Michael is right there
00:46:50and charging.
00:46:51But that little run
00:46:52on the home stretch
00:46:53cost him just a bit
00:46:54and he's had to drop back.
00:46:55Yeah, so what Michael
00:46:56is going to set and try
00:46:57to do right now
00:46:58is to catch
00:46:59little Al in traffic.
00:47:00Like, for example,
00:47:01little Al decides
00:47:02to go to the left
00:47:03of some guy.
00:47:04Michael will gamble
00:47:05and go to the right
00:47:06with the hope
00:47:07that little Al
00:47:08will just get bogged down
00:47:09with the traffic.
00:47:10And that's the most
00:47:11likely thing to do.
00:47:12While they work their way
00:47:13down the main stretch,
00:47:14Mario Andretti
00:47:15rolls back into the pits.
00:47:16This time,
00:47:17they reach in
00:47:18and take the steering wheel off.
00:47:19So, apparently,
00:47:20whatever they were hoping for
00:47:21didn't work.
00:47:22And Scott Brayton
00:47:23that rolled past as well
00:47:24as he still chunks his way
00:47:25around with a faulty clutch.
00:47:26These engines are turning
00:47:2712,000 plus RPM.
00:47:28When you lose the water
00:47:29the way Mario did,
00:47:30it probably did damage
00:47:31to the engine.
00:47:32Here comes Michael.
00:47:33He's going to try
00:47:34and turn one again.
00:47:35But, no,
00:47:36there comes little Al
00:47:37as they work down inside
00:47:38of the Mackenzie car
00:47:39of Scott Goodyear.
00:47:40And, by the way,
00:47:41that team is operated
00:47:42by Doug Shearson's
00:47:43daughter, Molly.
00:47:44So, the Shearson family
00:47:45involved not only
00:47:46with the Indy winner
00:47:47but with Scott Goodyear's
00:47:48car as well.
00:47:49The young Canadian
00:47:50very impressive here.
00:47:51But most impressive
00:47:52is this fight for the lead
00:47:53as Michael is there
00:47:54just trying to worry
00:47:55little Al to death.
00:47:56Remember, Michael
00:47:57with two victories
00:47:58on this track,
00:47:59Al Inter, Jr.,
00:48:00with no victories
00:48:01on this track.
00:48:02The last time
00:48:03that Alola won
00:48:04on this circuit
00:48:05was with Mario Andretti
00:48:06at the wheel in 1985.
00:48:0878 miles are complete.
00:48:10Al Inter, Jr.
00:48:11continues his lead.
00:48:12But right there
00:48:13is Michael Andretti.
00:48:15These two youngsters
00:48:16who grew up together
00:48:17at racetracks
00:48:18battling with one another.
00:48:19They loved it.
00:48:20Mario, of course,
00:48:21out of the race now,
00:48:22told me recently
00:48:23he's gotten used
00:48:24to going home
00:48:25in the Andretti family
00:48:26plane with Michael's trophies
00:48:28strapped in
00:48:29along next to him.
00:48:31You can just watch
00:48:32how hard Michael
00:48:33is trying to crowd
00:48:34little Al into
00:48:35trying a wrong side pass
00:48:37on anybody.
00:48:38That's all he needs
00:48:39to get by little Al
00:48:40right now.
00:48:41Michael drops back
00:48:42just a bit,
00:48:43hoping, I'm sure,
00:48:44for the advantage
00:48:45of traffic
00:48:46as he continues
00:48:47his pursuit
00:48:48of the Valvoline car
00:48:49of Al Inter, Jr.
00:48:50Here's Gary Gerald.
00:48:51And a disappointed
00:48:52Mario Andretti
00:48:53overheating
00:48:54with the radiator.
00:48:55What causes
00:48:56a problem like that, Mario?
00:48:57Well, a bolt
00:48:58just pierced
00:48:59the radiator.
00:49:00Obviously,
00:49:01it came,
00:49:02it was thrown
00:49:03from somebody's wheel
00:49:04and must have been
00:49:05laying out on the track.
00:49:06Six and a half minutes
00:49:07and the crew
00:49:08replaces it.
00:49:09You go back out
00:49:10where you thought
00:49:11maybe to chase points.
00:49:12Was there a further
00:49:13problem then?
00:49:14Well, there was,
00:49:15for some reason
00:49:16or other,
00:49:17the oil temperature
00:49:18was way up.
00:49:19At the end,
00:49:20this was sounding
00:49:21kind of funny,
00:49:22so I just didn't
00:49:23want to destroy it.
00:49:24There's no point
00:49:25continuing.
00:49:26So now,
00:49:27Paulie has to become
00:49:28a cheerleader
00:49:29as Michael battles
00:49:30with Al Unser
00:49:31for the lead.
00:49:32Thank you, Mario.
00:49:33Well, no problem there
00:49:34because Mario Andretti
00:49:35is Michael's
00:49:36best cheerleader.
00:49:37Take a look
00:49:38at how
00:49:39Michael
00:49:40threads his way
00:49:41to the inside
00:49:42while little Al
00:49:43moves to the outside
00:49:44and continues his chase
00:49:45for the lead
00:49:46here in the Miller
00:49:47Genuine Draft 200.
00:49:48We'll be back
00:49:49with more from Milwaukee
00:49:50after this message
00:49:51and a word
00:49:52from our ABC stations.
00:49:56Milwaukee Mile
00:49:57under yellow.
00:49:58Ari Leyendijk,
00:49:59the cause for the yellow.
00:50:00The safety crew
00:50:01just got him started.
00:50:02They gave him a push
00:50:03and he's now
00:50:04under power.
00:50:05He'll head into the pits
00:50:06but the yellow flag
00:50:07flies
00:50:08for this spin
00:50:09by Ari Leyendijk
00:50:10and he's got some damage
00:50:11to that car.
00:50:14Here is the situation.
00:50:16Just a fast spin
00:50:17up,
00:50:18brushed the wall,
00:50:19came to a stop
00:50:20in the middle of the track.
00:50:21Everybody who was
00:50:22running with Ari
00:50:23back about 12th place
00:50:24was able to get past.
00:50:25Now,
00:50:26when the yellow came out
00:50:27everybody dived
00:50:28into the pits.
00:50:30This was just
00:50:31before the yellow
00:50:32and that gives
00:50:33Eddie Cheever
00:50:34in the target car
00:50:35number 15 to the outside
00:50:36as he cuts Michael off
00:50:37going into the corner.
00:50:38As they come off
00:50:39of the corner
00:50:40Michael Andretti
00:50:41speaks to Cheever.
00:50:43Well, Cheever
00:50:44lives in
00:50:45in Rome
00:50:46for a long time
00:50:47and Michael's Italian.
00:50:48I'm sure they understood.
00:50:49Leyendijk is into the pits
00:50:51and they work
00:50:52on the left front wing
00:50:53which is what
00:50:54brushed the wall.
00:50:56Well, that wasn't
00:50:57a very bad wreck.
00:50:58Now, up close to the wall
00:50:59bent the wing a little bit.
00:51:00Oh, that's almost
00:51:01a miss, Paul.
00:51:02What a terribly
00:51:03frustrating day
00:51:04to come from
00:51:05the Indianapolis 500
00:51:06win to struggle
00:51:07with your race car
00:51:08to 15th qualifying position.
00:51:09Move up
00:51:10into 12th place
00:51:11and then brush the wall.
00:51:14One of the refuelers
00:51:15in the Andretti pits.
00:51:18On board now
00:51:20with
00:51:21Al Unser Jr.
00:51:22who rides in
00:51:23second place.
00:51:24John Andretti
00:51:25there he is
00:51:26the 41
00:51:27Foster's Porsche car
00:51:29will get a
00:51:30stop-and-go penalty
00:51:31for bumping a tire
00:51:32during that last round
00:51:33of stops under the yellow.
00:51:34They'll assess that
00:51:35of course
00:51:36as the green comes out.
00:51:38So, 89 miles
00:51:39are complete
00:51:41and the tactics
00:51:42of this race
00:51:43is A.J. Poit
00:51:44comes in to make his stop
00:51:46in that beautiful
00:51:47black number 14.
00:51:48A.J. had dropped
00:51:49back to 9th place.
00:51:51Let's go to the pits
00:51:52Jack Arute.
00:51:53Well, Paul
00:51:54as we said
00:51:55what a difference
00:51:56a week makes.
00:51:57This race car behind me
00:51:58Arie Luyendyk
00:51:59was in victory lane.
00:52:00Today, they asked
00:52:01Doug Shearson
00:52:02if he wanted to change
00:52:03the front wing.
00:52:04He said, why bother?
00:52:05We're not running that well.
00:52:06So, it's all done
00:52:07for Arie Luyendyk today.
00:52:09As A.J. Poit
00:52:10completes his stop
00:52:11under the yellow
00:52:12and heads out.
00:52:13If I might say so
00:52:14that is not a decision
00:52:15that Roger Penske
00:52:16would have made
00:52:17to take a car
00:52:18that is running
00:52:19out of the race.
00:52:20It's an interesting
00:52:21struggle over the years
00:52:22and just the desire
00:52:23to be out there
00:52:24racing.
00:52:25Don't you agree, Jack?
00:52:26It's interesting
00:52:27that Arie would decide
00:52:28to stop.
00:52:29Well, Paul, definitely.
00:52:30I mean, Sam, definitely.
00:52:31But, you know,
00:52:32one of the things
00:52:33you got to remember too
00:52:34is the fact that
00:52:35one of the things
00:52:36that that team did
00:52:37is they focused
00:52:38on the Indy 500.
00:52:39And I think they've been
00:52:40a little bit distressed
00:52:41this weekend
00:52:42throughout the week.
00:52:43The fact they couldn't
00:52:44carry on the momentum
00:52:45here at Milwaukee.
00:52:46I think it's got them
00:52:47scratching their heads.
00:52:48Arie Luyendyk
00:52:49had 30 points
00:52:50in the championship
00:52:51as he came here.
00:52:52Here's another look
00:52:53at the Luyendyk situation.
00:52:54And from the halfway point
00:52:55through three and four,
00:52:56he'd already lost it.
00:52:57You really drive
00:52:58the four corners here
00:52:59as two corners
00:53:00coming down
00:53:01and apexing
00:53:02right on the grass
00:53:03in the middle of the corners.
00:53:04And Arie, it looks like,
00:53:05lost it just before the apex.
00:53:06He did, Paul.
00:53:07And he hit a little bit
00:53:08harder than we thought
00:53:09we did by watching
00:53:10him get into the pits.
00:53:11Michael Andretti
00:53:12with a stop
00:53:13of 12.1 seconds
00:53:14assumed the lead
00:53:15during those stops
00:53:16over Allen's
00:53:19Jr.'s pit stop
00:53:20at 12.3 seconds.
00:53:21Nick Panaro
00:53:22has the green flag.
00:53:23The pace car is off.
00:53:24And we're racing
00:53:25with little Al
00:53:26pulling up the challenge.
00:53:27Michael Andretti,
00:53:28the leader of the race.
00:53:29Al moves to the high groove.
00:53:30Little Al works down,
00:53:31touches the inside
00:53:32between one and two.
00:53:33On board now
00:53:34with Allen's Jr.
00:53:35Now, remember,
00:53:36they both have new tires on,
00:53:37and probably any adjustments
00:53:38they wanted,
00:53:39which would have been
00:53:40wing adjustments,
00:53:41they would have made.
00:53:42Now we'll see
00:53:43how they came out
00:53:44on their feet.
00:53:45Weather continues
00:53:46to change.
00:53:47Weather continues
00:53:48to hold off
00:53:49as we look back
00:53:50from underside.
00:53:51Michael Andretti's
00:53:52rear wing
00:53:53in the Valvoline car
00:53:54of Allen's Jr.
00:53:55on the main stretch.
00:53:56Michael threads his way
00:53:57down through one.
00:53:58Now on board
00:53:59with Allen's Jr.
00:54:00Only eight laps
00:54:01short of the point
00:54:02where the race
00:54:03could become official.
00:54:04There's John Andretti
00:54:06as he makes that
00:54:07stop-and-go.
00:54:09The card official
00:54:10is right there.
00:54:11He says,
00:54:12taken out.
00:54:13And, boy,
00:54:14John almost dumped the clutch
00:54:15just a little too fast
00:54:16but it was too long
00:54:17a pause and go.
00:54:20That would be
00:54:21too bad a penalty
00:54:22to kill his engine.
00:54:23So John Andretti,
00:54:24one of the two
00:54:25Porsche drivers here,
00:54:26back to the bike.
00:54:27Psychological factors
00:54:28are so big in racing,
00:54:29and it must be
00:54:30in the back of
00:54:31Michael Andretti's mind
00:54:32that if he could keep
00:54:33this man,
00:54:34Allen's Jr.,
00:54:35out of the winner's circle
00:54:36on the oval
00:54:37one more time,
00:54:38it might continue
00:54:39to fuel the idea
00:54:40that for some reason
00:54:41Al can't win
00:54:42on ovals.
00:54:44Allen's Jr.
00:54:45comes up,
00:54:46passes the Porsche.
00:54:47There is Bobby Rahal.
00:54:48He runs in fourth place
00:54:49with Emerson Fittipaldi,
00:54:50the defending
00:54:51PPG IndyCar
00:54:52world champion,
00:54:53chasing him.
00:54:54And as I mentioned
00:54:55when we watch the pit stops,
00:54:56and sometimes we see
00:54:57the guys kill their engines
00:54:58because their clutches
00:54:59move very little.
00:55:00You know,
00:55:01a half-inch of travel
00:55:02on the clutch
00:55:03is a long wait.
00:55:04So that's the reason
00:55:05they kill the engines
00:55:06a lot of times.
00:55:07On the other hand,
00:55:08surprisingly enough,
00:55:09for as much horsepower
00:55:10as they have,
00:55:11you need a lot of revs
00:55:12to get it out of the pits.
00:55:13Yeah, Paul,
00:55:14they have a lot of horsepower
00:55:15at low RPM,
00:55:16and they don't really have
00:55:17any horsepower
00:55:18until they get
00:55:19the turbocharger lit
00:55:20and get it going.
00:55:21So they have to take it up
00:55:22what, 6,000, 7,000?
00:55:23Oh, they have to get up
00:55:24more than that
00:55:25to even get the turbocharger lit,
00:55:26and then there's still
00:55:27a period of about
00:55:28two seconds, Paul.
00:55:29They just don't have
00:55:30much power.
00:55:31So it's critical
00:55:32the way they move
00:55:33in and out of the pits.
00:55:34There is Mika,
00:55:35Lion Daigari's wife,
00:55:36talking with Chris Stock,
00:55:37who has had his hands
00:55:38full this week
00:55:39trying to keep
00:55:40all of their appointments
00:55:41scheduled.
00:55:42On board now,
00:55:43the superstar,
00:55:44Al Unser, Jr.
00:55:45Saturday, ABC's
00:55:46Pro Bowler Spring Tour
00:55:47will continue
00:55:48as sports legends
00:55:49head to Las Vegas
00:55:50for the $110,000 showboat
00:55:53PBA Senior Invitational.
00:55:55Live coverage will begin
00:55:56at 3 o'clock Eastern.
00:55:58Then ABC's Wide World of Sports
00:55:59presents the final jewel
00:56:01of the Chrysler
00:56:02Triple Crown Challenge,
00:56:03the Belmont Stakes.
00:56:05All coming up next Saturday
00:56:06here on ABC Sports.
00:56:10The fight now,
00:56:11Rick Mears,
00:56:13you can see,
00:56:14closing in there.
00:56:15And Al Unser, Jr.
00:56:16is just ahead.
00:56:17So Rick Mears
00:56:18in the Pennzoil car
00:56:19is closing down.
00:56:20This represents
00:56:21a real recovery
00:56:22by Rick Mears,
00:56:23a man who, in effect,
00:56:24took his car
00:56:25to the doctor
00:56:26and found some cure
00:56:27because he has been
00:56:28coming back
00:56:29and coming back
00:56:30very strong.
00:56:31Remember, Rick Mears
00:56:32on the right of your screen
00:56:33in the yellow car
00:56:34was the pole sitter
00:56:35for two days here.
00:56:36By far the fastest man
00:56:37and the man expected
00:56:38to win the race.
00:56:39And as they come around
00:56:40at this lap,
00:56:41they see the crossed flags
00:56:42from the starter,
00:56:43Nick Minoru.
00:56:44That tells every driver here
00:56:45that they are
00:56:46at the halfway point,
00:56:47100 miles,
00:56:48100 laps now complete.
00:56:50So as Michael Andretti
00:56:52comes around again
00:56:53to complete 101 laps,
00:56:55it will be an official race
00:56:57should weather intervene.
00:56:59But it doesn't appear
00:57:00that that's going to happen.
00:57:01The sky is heavy,
00:57:02but the weather
00:57:03continues to hold off
00:57:04and we have a very,
00:57:05very fast race going here.
00:57:07We'll be back.
00:57:12200 with 106 miles
00:57:14of the 200 miles
00:57:15scheduled distance complete.
00:57:17And this man, Roberto Guerrero,
00:57:19just pulled out of competition,
00:57:21the driver of the
00:57:22Alfa Romeo-powered car.
00:57:24He came to America
00:57:25as a teenager
00:57:26to study the English language,
00:57:27attended New York University,
00:57:29and then went over to England
00:57:30where he studied engineering.
00:57:33Finally back to the United States
00:57:34after a stint in Formula One
00:57:36to the IndyCars
00:57:38where he has been
00:57:39a winner once
00:57:40and, oh, so close
00:57:41way too many times.
00:57:42Now he's an American citizen.
00:57:44You're on board
00:57:45with Michael Andretti.
00:57:46He is the leader of the race
00:57:47and Bobby Unser,
00:57:48the leaders,
00:57:49are really flying.
00:57:50Oh, they certainly are, Paul.
00:57:51The last time I checked them,
00:57:52they were running
00:57:53almost 145 miles an hour.
00:57:55That's a good qualifying speed.
00:57:57There's Rick Mears.
00:57:59Now his competition,
00:58:00Little Al.
00:58:01Rick, incidentally,
00:58:02has healed his car a whole bunch
00:58:03or the Roger Penske crew has
00:58:05during the last pit stop.
00:58:06There's Little Al.
00:58:07There's Rick in the yellow car
00:58:08right behind there.
00:58:09Traffic is separating
00:58:10him a little bit right now,
00:58:11but it is uncommon
00:58:13for the Mears,
00:58:14the Penske team,
00:58:15to miss their set-up
00:58:16early in the race,
00:58:17but it is common
00:58:18for them to get the car healed up
00:58:20and get back competitive.
00:58:21That's Pancho Carter
00:58:22in the blue and orange Hardee's car
00:58:24working the high side.
00:58:26He's got a pretty good line
00:58:28able to work up there.
00:58:29Rick Mears is lined up
00:58:31trying to work his way
00:58:32through this crowd.
00:58:33That's Danny Sullivan
00:58:34that's closing in,
00:58:35but Danny Sullivan
00:58:36is off of the leader pace
00:58:38and not running
00:58:39with Rick Mears.
00:58:41Traffic is really hurting Rick
00:58:43right now.
00:58:44You can see those two cars
00:58:46right there
00:58:47really pulling Rick back.
00:58:49He's not being able
00:58:50to get up there.
00:58:52Mears tries to threat
00:58:53his way past
00:58:55so that he can get back
00:58:56in the fight,
00:58:57and here is Bobby Rahal
00:58:59coming up behind Pancho Carter
00:59:01trying to catch
00:59:02Rick Mears as well,
00:59:04so the fight develops here
00:59:05for third place
00:59:06as Rick was trying
00:59:07to move up and catch
00:59:08second place Alonso Jr.
00:59:10The traffic gave Bobby Rahal
00:59:12a chance to move up
00:59:13and close in on Rick Mears.
00:59:15Pancho Carter
00:59:16that Rick just went by
00:59:17has one of the older
00:59:18Cosworth engines.
00:59:19He's handling good
00:59:20with an older car
00:59:21and not much horsepower.
00:59:23And the running order
00:59:24after 100 laps
00:59:25as we look down
00:59:26through the entire field,
00:59:29Michael Andretti
00:59:30is still our leader,
00:59:32and Rick Mears is still
00:59:33trying to work his way
00:59:34up through the field.
00:59:36As cars lay down more laps,
00:59:38Leyendijk already
00:59:39out of the race.
00:59:40Here's Gary Gerald.
00:59:41Well, very unusual
00:59:42happening just a moment ago.
00:59:43The big fuel truck
00:59:44rolled up.
00:59:45A hose went over
00:59:46and in the Andretti tank
00:59:47for Michael Andretti,
00:59:48they got a little bit
00:59:49more fuel.
00:59:50You hardly ever see
00:59:51that happen during a race,
00:59:52but remember
00:59:53those extra laps.
00:59:54They ran behind
00:59:55the pace cars
00:59:56at the start
00:59:57because of the wet
00:59:58track conditions
00:59:59and they got
01:00:00a little bit
01:00:01more fuel.
01:00:02And they were
01:00:03able to get
01:00:04a little bit
01:00:05more fuel.
01:00:06And because of the
01:00:07wet track conditions,
01:00:08they're now compensating.
01:00:09They're going down
01:00:10and hitting every fuel tank
01:00:11down along the line,
01:00:12making sure that
01:00:13everybody will have
01:00:14the same amount
01:00:15and it could be
01:00:16very precious
01:00:17when you get down
01:00:18to those last few laps
01:00:19because, believe it or not,
01:00:20there are fuel concerns
01:00:21here at Milwaukee.
01:00:22Well, you know,
01:00:23that's the first time
01:00:24that they've done that
01:00:25to my memory
01:00:26and I think
01:00:27that's a great idea.
01:00:28In the past,
01:00:29they would simply
01:00:30go to green flag
01:00:31even though they
01:00:32were under yellow
01:00:33and say,
01:00:34well, there's
01:00:35many times
01:00:36that fans just
01:00:37don't understand
01:00:38why we have
01:00:39a fuel economy run
01:00:40sometimes
01:00:41or why fuel
01:00:42is such a big factor
01:00:43because the cars
01:00:44are in fact using
01:00:45methanol alcohol,
01:00:46not gasoline.
01:00:47It has nothing
01:00:48to do with petroleum
01:00:49at all.
01:00:50So often,
01:00:51it would make
01:00:52a better show
01:00:53if they just
01:00:54had a little
01:00:55more fuel.
01:00:56Emerson Fittipaldi,
01:00:57the number one car,
01:00:58he runs in fifth
01:00:59but he is catching
01:01:00Bobby Rahal,
01:01:01the fourth place
01:01:02machine.
01:01:03The red car,
01:01:04just in front of them,
01:01:05he runs in seventh.
01:01:06They both try
01:01:07to overhaul Boycelle.
01:01:08It's really abnormal
01:01:09to see this man,
01:01:10Emerson Fittipaldi,
01:01:11running as slow
01:01:12as he's been running
01:01:13to date.
01:01:14Now, that's not to mean
01:01:15he's running totally slow
01:01:16but he's not
01:01:17leading the race.
01:01:18Ammo has really
01:01:19learned how to run
01:01:20oval tracks.
01:01:21Rahal still looking
01:01:22for an opening
01:01:23as he changes
01:01:24Rahal Boycelle
01:01:25and on the first
01:01:26corner,
01:01:27Rahal moves
01:01:28past Boycelle.
01:01:29Fittipaldi closes
01:01:30in as well
01:01:31and if Boycelle
01:01:32sees him,
01:01:33then Fittipaldi
01:01:34should have an opportunity
01:01:35to move past
01:01:36going into the third turn
01:01:37but Rahal's not lifting
01:01:38at all.
01:01:39He made Fittipaldi
01:01:40earn that slot.
01:01:41Oh, he certainly did.
01:01:42They're having a good
01:01:43race between them.
01:01:44There's Rahal
01:01:45in and handling
01:01:46pretty good moving on.
01:01:47Emerson Fittipaldi
01:01:48putting the pressure
01:01:49on him hard.
01:01:50Now, the drivers
01:01:51are obviously
01:01:52having to face
01:01:53the idea that
01:01:54they're going to go
01:01:55the full 200 miles.
01:01:56The thought that it
01:01:57was going to be a sprint
01:01:58for just 100 miles
01:01:59is dissolving
01:02:00as the clouds
01:02:01are beginning to lift
01:02:02a little bit here.
01:02:03So, at just past
01:02:04the halfway point,
01:02:05you have to begin
01:02:06to think full race
01:02:07strategy now
01:02:08instead of just
01:02:09trying to keep
01:02:10ahead.
01:02:11There's where the
01:02:12teams come in, Sam.
01:02:13It's so important
01:02:14and I hope people
01:02:15realize that they
01:02:16have to be as flexible
01:02:17in their feelings
01:02:18and their actions
01:02:19as the racing drivers do
01:02:20because the strategy
01:02:21just totally changes
01:02:22at a certain point.
01:02:23Rahal and Fittipaldi
01:02:24both thread their way
01:02:25through traffic.
01:02:26That's Eddie
01:02:27Cheever in the target car
01:02:28that they come alongside.
01:02:29Cheever
01:02:30driving for
01:02:31Chip Ganassi this year
01:02:32coming over from
01:02:33Formula 1
01:02:34for the past decade
01:02:36and enjoying himself.
01:02:37The rookie of the year
01:02:38in Indianapolis
01:02:39and quite a good
01:02:40race driver.
01:02:41And, of course,
01:02:42he'll be fighting
01:02:43for rookie of the year
01:02:44honors in part as well.
01:02:45Cheever used to be
01:02:46a vegetarian
01:02:47but when he got
01:02:48to Indianapolis this month
01:02:49he started making up
01:02:50for lost time.
01:02:51Of course, he'd been
01:02:52living out in the United States
01:02:53for so many years.
01:02:54He started going
01:02:55to fast food places
01:02:56with such frequency
01:02:57he came on to be
01:02:58on a first name basis
01:02:59with many of the waitresses
01:03:00there.
01:03:01There is Teo Bobby
01:03:02that fosters
01:03:03Quaker State Porsche.
01:03:04He runs back
01:03:05in 11th place.
01:03:06Remember that Porsche
01:03:07had a whole new car
01:03:08designed for this season
01:03:09all carbon fiber
01:03:10and then a rules change
01:03:11in January
01:03:12forced Derrick Walker
01:03:13and that crew
01:03:14to regroup.
01:03:15And since that time
01:03:16they've been struggling
01:03:17to get back to the point
01:03:18they really felt
01:03:19they should be.
01:03:20As professional as Teo is
01:03:21I think his morale
01:03:22has been suffering
01:03:23a little bit
01:03:24in recent years.
01:03:25I think he's been
01:03:26struggling to get
01:03:27back to the point
01:03:28in recent races
01:03:29because he had
01:03:30really staked
01:03:31his career
01:03:32on the success
01:03:33of this Porsche
01:03:34and right now
01:03:35are they going to win
01:03:36this year?
01:03:37It's a long shot
01:03:38frankly.
01:03:39Got a glimpse
01:03:40of Ed Nassman there
01:03:41who's keeping track
01:03:42of Michael Andretti
01:03:43the leader.
01:03:44He manages both
01:03:45of the Andretti cars.
01:03:46Indy car racing
01:03:47is so competitive today
01:03:48that when the people
01:03:49like Porsche
01:03:50get behind
01:03:51in their testing
01:03:52and development work
01:03:53it just seems like
01:03:54it's impossible
01:03:55to catch up after that.
01:03:56Well and of course
01:03:57there was some
01:03:58rules reinterpretation
01:03:59I should say
01:04:00over the winter
01:04:01that went
01:04:02disadvantageously
01:04:03against Porsche
01:04:04and that set them
01:04:05back significantly
01:04:06for this year.
01:04:07Strange too
01:04:08with the team manager
01:04:09Derek Walker
01:04:10who is actually
01:04:11on the rules committee.
01:04:12It's a wonder he
01:04:13couldn't argue
01:04:14on his own behalf.
01:04:15Well he did argue
01:04:16Paul but they lost it.
01:04:17It just shows you
01:04:18that the powers
01:04:19are 24 votes
01:04:20not one.
01:04:21So Bobby Rahal
01:04:22in the SDP
01:04:23Graco machine
01:04:24runs in fourth place
01:04:25being chased
01:04:26by Michael Andretti.
01:04:27Michael Andretti
01:04:28leads.
01:04:29Al Unser Jr.
01:04:30is second.
01:04:31Rick Mears is third.
01:04:33Back on the Milwaukee
01:04:34Mile at Wisconsin
01:04:35State Fair Park.
01:04:36I'm Paul Page
01:04:37with Bobby Unser,
01:04:38Sam Posey,
01:04:39Jack Aroon,
01:04:40and Gary Gerald.
01:04:41Michael Andretti
01:04:42he's right on board
01:04:43with him right now.
01:04:44He is the leader
01:04:45of the race
01:04:46with 129 miles
01:04:47of the 200 mile
01:04:48scheduled distance
01:04:49completed.
01:04:50He's being chased
01:04:51by Al Unser Jr.
01:04:52Now as we watch
01:04:53Michael come through here
01:04:54there he comes.
01:04:55Al sits back.
01:04:56He just came off
01:04:57of the turn as well
01:04:58and he's set up
01:04:59behind Danny Sullivan.
01:05:00A couple cars
01:05:01in between
01:05:02little Al and Michael
01:05:03but little Al
01:05:04is closing down
01:05:05and Bobby Unser
01:05:06they're running
01:05:07a whale of a clip.
01:05:08They really are Paul
01:05:09because of the threat
01:05:10of rain we know
01:05:11that they started off
01:05:12the race with
01:05:13a blistering pace
01:05:14but as the race
01:05:15has gone on now
01:05:16we haven't had the rain
01:05:17they might expect
01:05:18and they still have to
01:05:19keep a blistering pace
01:05:20because they started
01:05:21out that way
01:05:22and they're getting
01:05:23their tires
01:05:24have to be very high
01:05:25because their speeds
01:05:26are absolutely
01:05:27qualifying speeds
01:05:28right now.
01:05:29Eddie Cheever
01:05:30Raul Boycell
01:05:31separate Al Unser Jr.
01:05:32from his goal
01:05:33of catching
01:05:34Michael Andretti
01:05:35the leader of this race.
01:05:36Michael with
01:05:37nine career wins.
01:05:38Four of them
01:05:39have come on
01:05:40one mile ovals.
01:05:41Michael Andretti
01:05:42and his wife Sandy
01:05:43are expecting
01:05:44their second child
01:05:45in November.
01:05:46There's the fight
01:05:47for third and fourth
01:05:48between Rick Mears
01:05:49in the Pennzoil car
01:05:50and Bobby Rahal
01:05:51in the SDP
01:05:52break-open car
01:05:53Right behind them
01:05:54is Emerson Fittipaldi
01:05:55in the number one car
01:05:56so that little blanket
01:05:57right there
01:05:58represents third,
01:05:59fourth and fifth.
01:06:00And that of course
01:06:01is also a battle
01:06:02between two teams
01:06:03two very powerful
01:06:04teams in racing.
01:06:05The Penske team
01:06:06running here
01:06:07with Mears
01:06:08and Fittipaldi
01:06:09sandwiching
01:06:10the man
01:06:11from the Gallus team
01:06:12Bobby Rahal.
01:06:13Randy Lewis
01:06:14in the 12
01:06:15RCRO car
01:06:16into the pits.
01:06:17And keep in mind
01:06:18now Paul
01:06:19we still have
01:06:20another
01:06:21pit stop
01:06:22yet coming.
01:06:23Now
01:06:24that's going to mean
01:06:25that the Penske cars
01:06:26are definitely
01:06:27going to get healed
01:06:28up some more.
01:06:29So the race
01:06:30should get better
01:06:31as we go on.
01:06:32And it should make
01:06:33for a whale of a battle
01:06:34in the pit crews
01:06:35as we look back
01:06:36to Emerson Fittipaldi's
01:06:37car
01:06:38from under the wing
01:06:39of Bobby Rahal's car.
01:06:40There are the two of them
01:06:41on the track together.
01:06:42Two outdoor camera
01:06:43views available
01:06:44on Rahal's car.
01:06:45The pit crews
01:06:46have to be thinking
01:06:47about the stops
01:06:48that they must make now.
01:06:49One more
01:06:51will have to happen.
01:06:52Lewis stalled
01:06:53coming out of the pits.
01:06:54And now the crew
01:06:55comes forward
01:06:56to try and get him
01:06:57back with the help
01:06:58of some of the
01:06:59cart officials.
01:07:00That's one of the
01:07:01Buick engines.
01:07:02They'll get him
01:07:03restarted and back
01:07:04into the action.
01:07:05Last week
01:07:06you saw these cars
01:07:07in Indianapolis
01:07:08but they're
01:07:09entirely different
01:07:10here.
01:07:12One of the
01:07:13significant differences
01:07:14in the way a car
01:07:15is prepared and
01:07:16set up to race
01:07:17in Milwaukee
01:07:18as opposed to
01:07:19the way it ran
01:07:20last week in
01:07:21Indianapolis
01:07:22is found here
01:07:23at the rear wing.
01:07:24Notice the size
01:07:25of this rear wing
01:07:26on Bobby Rahal's car
01:07:27in comparison
01:07:28to the size
01:07:29of the wing
01:07:30that he used
01:07:31just a week ago
01:07:32at Indianapolis.
01:07:33This is much smaller.
01:07:34It's trimmed out
01:07:35very flat.
01:07:36Very little
01:07:37resistance to air.
01:07:38They're trying
01:07:39to reduce
01:07:40drag at
01:07:41as much
01:07:42straightaway
01:07:43speed as
01:07:44possible.
01:07:45Straightaway
01:07:46speeds at
01:07:47Indianapolis
01:07:48230 plus
01:07:49miles per hour.
01:07:50With this
01:07:51bigger wing,
01:07:52straightaway
01:07:53speeds at
01:07:54Milwaukee
01:07:55on the
01:07:56shorter track
01:07:57about 180
01:07:58miles per hour.
01:07:59But here
01:08:00you're grabbing
01:08:01the air,
01:08:02you're creating
01:08:03downforce,
01:08:04making the car
01:08:05stick to
01:08:06the Milwaukee
01:08:07mile.
01:08:08Now notice
01:08:09the nose
01:08:10wing at
01:08:11Indianapolis.
01:08:12This was
01:08:13the nose
01:08:14wing at
01:08:15Indy.
01:08:16Now at
01:08:17Indianapolis,
01:08:18the thing you
01:08:19have to remember
01:08:20is that most
01:08:21of the downforce
01:08:22is created
01:08:23through the
01:08:24under tunnels.
01:08:25When
01:08:26straightaway
01:08:27speeds here
01:08:28are roughly
01:08:2960 miles
01:08:30per hour
01:08:31slower,
01:08:32the ground
01:08:33force is
01:08:34developed
01:08:35by the use
01:08:36of the front
01:08:37and the
01:08:38back
01:08:39of the
01:08:40nose
01:08:41wing.
01:08:42Now
01:08:43the
01:08:44nose
01:08:45wing
01:08:46is
01:08:47developed
01:08:48by the
01:08:49use
01:08:50of the
01:08:51front
01:08:52and the
01:08:53back
01:08:54of the
01:08:55nose
01:08:56wing.
01:08:57Now
01:08:58the
01:08:59nose
01:09:00wing
01:09:01is
01:09:02developed
01:09:03by the
01:09:04use
01:09:05of the
01:09:06back
01:09:07of the
01:09:08nose
01:09:09wing.
01:09:10Now
01:09:11the
01:09:12nose
01:09:13wing
01:09:14is
01:09:15developed
01:09:16by the
01:09:17use
01:09:18of the
01:09:19front
01:09:20and the
01:09:21back
01:09:22of the
01:09:23nose
01:09:24wing.
01:09:25Now
01:09:26the
01:09:27nose
01:09:28wing
01:09:29is
01:09:30developed
01:09:31by the
01:09:32use
01:09:33of the
01:09:34front
01:09:35and the
01:09:36back
01:09:37of the
01:09:38nose
01:09:39wing.
01:09:40Now
01:09:41the
01:09:42nose
01:09:43wing
01:09:44is
01:09:45developed
01:09:46by the
01:09:47use
01:09:48of the
01:09:49front
01:09:50and the
01:09:51back
01:09:52of the
01:09:53nose
01:09:54wing.
01:09:55Now
01:09:56the
01:09:57nose
01:09:58wing
01:09:59is
01:10:00developed
01:10:01by the

01:10:05and the
01:10:06back
01:10:07of the
01:10:08nose
01:10:09wing.
01:10:10Now
01:10:11the
01:10:12nose
01:10:13wing
01:10:14is
01:10:15developed
01:10:16by the

01:10:20and the
01:10:21back
01:10:22of the

01:10:25Now
01:10:26the

01:10:28wing
01:10:29is
01:10:30developed
