00:00Well, Kate Blanchett's new TV show has scored a five-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival.
00:06Critics are hailing her performance in Disclaimer as one of the best of her career.
00:11She plays an acclaimed journalist whose reputation is threatened when an unknown author publishes a new novel exposing her darkest secrets.
00:20Our Sunrise Showbiz correspondent, Steve Hargrave, caught up with Kate.
00:25All these years, you have concealed parts of yourself from the world.
00:30You keep everyone in the dark to maintain a balance.
00:36And you think you have succeeded.
00:46Until now.
00:47Aussie Oscar winner, Kate Blanchett is back in the acclaimed new series, Disclaimer.
00:53It's created by fellow Oscar winner, director Alfonso Cuaron, who gave us Children of Men and Gravity.
00:59And it follows a woman whose past comes back to haunt her.
01:02What are you doing? Catherine? Catherine! Get out! Catherine!
01:08It's about me.
01:09Kate is brilliant, of course, and recently, she's also been stirring up the red carpets, wearing two outfits made of recycled spoons.
01:18I couldn't help but ask her for some fashion advice myself when I caught up with her and Alfonso.
01:24Good day, Kate. Good day, Alfonso. Welcome to Sunrise. Good to see you.
01:27Good to see you.
01:28Good to see you.
01:29Before we talk about this, frankly, amazing show, Kate, how does it feel? You've become a style icon as we speak.
01:34Everyone is talking about you and spoons.
01:37Me and spoons. I know. Well, I can play them and I can wear them.
01:41Yeah. The thing is, though, Kate, the trend is spreading.
01:44Oh, my God, look at that. You're ready for camping. You can do the Duke of Edinburgh.
01:49Exactly. We won't ask who wore it better.
01:52Where I went to university in Melbourne, there was a pub in North Fitzroy where if you went on a Sunday afternoon and you played an instrument, you got free beer.
02:02So I went and played the spoons and thought I was pretty good.
02:04But there was this old guy who would sit, yeah, sit in the corner and play the book.
02:10He would just open and shut a book and get free beer all Sundays.
02:14See, I should work for Tourism Australia.
02:17A duo of spoons and books.
02:19Does this get me a free beer? I am camping.
02:21It would in North Fitzroy. It would. It would.
02:24All right. Well, let's forget spoons because this show is forking good.
02:28And I must say, I think this show should be like required viewing for everyone because it's basically telling us that we shouldn't be trusting what we perhaps think we are seeing, isn't it?
02:37Which is so relevant constantly.
02:39Often what we read, what we watch, what we hear, it's through the prism of our own biases.
02:45And, you know, to actually watch something or speak to someone in an open hearted way is a very rare thing, I think.
02:52She needed to feel it.
02:54She needed to suffer, as I had.
02:57This is Alfonso's first series and it's incredibly tense, dealing with themes of cancellation and lies.
03:04It's an emotional rollercoaster.
03:06Some of them always stay with you. The great ones always do.
03:09The ones that demand a lot of you.
03:11And because my character is dealing with a lot of things that she has repressed and hasn't dealt with or thought about for a long time, the level of tension, I think, that I existed in for six months, nine months.
03:26I don't think I realized how heavy that was until we finally finished.
03:31And then there was discussions about reshoots and my blood pressure went straight up again.
03:36But the character was called Catherine and I am Catherine, so at least that was easy.
03:41The mechanics of doing a TV show are different than a film.
03:45And so it took forever.
03:48And that was at the expense of the mental health of the actors.
03:52Your mental health.
03:53And mine.
03:54We're still recovering.
03:55I'm your therapist.
03:56All right, lie down on the couch, guys.
03:58Take me back to your childhood. Come on.
04:01Right. I'm done. I'm off to play some spoons.
04:03Maybe walk down the street with my.
04:05It should be an Olympic event.
04:08You know, we've had break dancing.
04:10I think we should have spoon playing.
04:11I'm working on it.
04:12Is that a.
04:14You actually play spoons.
04:15I thought it was a T-shirt with a photo.
04:18No, no, no. He's gone.
04:19This is a fashion accessory.
04:21It is now.
04:22You can copy this.
04:23It's inspired by Kenny.
04:25Just don't sit down.
04:27The world needs to know who Catherine Ravenscroft really is.
04:35The world needs to know the truth.
04:38And Disclaimer premieres tomorrow on Apple TV.
04:41Isn't that just a fascinating storyline?
