Bernd Drouven is planning to turn Europe's largest copper producer to one of the world's leading copper works. As part of its new global strategy,in February of this year, the company renamed itself Aurubis, abandoning its former name Norddeutsche Affinerie .The copper production sector has been hard hit in the financial crisis, which has led to a 50 percent drop in the price of copper in just one year. Although Aurubis also posted a loss in the first quarter of this year,Drouven has been buying competing companies that have run into financial difficulties. He's counting on an upswing in the copper market as a result of the economic stimulus programs passed by many countries around the globe,as well as the large increase in China's demand for copper. That's why Drouven believes that the copper prices have bottomed out and that the market will begin to recover this year. Joachim Eggers accompanies Bernd Drouven and experiences the challenges he's faced with first-hand.
