JOKER 2 FOLIE A DEUX End Credits Scene, WTF Ending Explained & Batman Connections
Transcript
00:00Welcome back everyone is Charlie Joker two was just released.
00:10This will be my video for the very controversial ending to a very divisive movie there a couple
00:15key points throughout the entire film where it seems like it betrays the first movie betrays
00:20the fans both inside the world of the movie like Joker's fans who are watching his trial
00:25in the fans of the first movie in real life and then during the ending.
00:29It makes a much more deliberate turn into that like trying to restate sort of the themes
00:33of the movie in about how Joker does not want to be Joker anymore just wants it to all be
00:38over and a lot of the movie is just meta commentary of Todd Phillips wanting you to feel like
00:43he is the Joker character being made to suffer in real life for being forced to make this
00:48sequel movie and he wants it all to just be over, but there are a couple key moments that
00:53connected to some Batman things in the lore.
00:56Most people will be talking about after the movie lot of questions about what this connects
01:00with in other DC movies.
01:02So if you're brand-new to the channel be sure to subscribe to get all the videos and careful
01:06for spoilers.
01:07If you have not seen the movie it just could be talking about all the big themes and the
01:10specific ending moments, but a good way of thinking about this movie is like a key point
01:15in the middle of the film after Joker has met Harley Quinn who they just call Lee in
01:19the movie played by Lady Gaga her real name in the movie is Harleen Quinzel she did go
01:23to school to become a psychiatrist went insane became obsessed with the Joker after watching
01:28his actions during the events of the first movie and in the world of the movie.
01:32She's actually meant to be a surrogate for the fans of the first movie like being obsessed
01:36with the Joker from the first movie wanted to see him go crazy in the second movie.
01:40So throughout the film Harley Quinn wants him to keep putting the Joker makeup back
01:45on acting more like the Joker whereas Joker himself Arthur Fleck doesn't really want to
01:50have anything to do with the Joker character Harley spends most the movie trying to get
01:54him to believe the Joker is the real version of himself and Arthur Fleck is the fake version
01:59like Arthur Fleck doesn't actually exist.
02:01He is Joker there's even a TV movie that was made in universe based on his life after he's
02:06locked up at the end of the film and put in Arkham he doesn't get to see it himself, but
02:10he keeps asking Harley Quinn about it was a good and she tells him it was good, but
02:14then later in the movie you find out it was actually a terrible that's meant to be their
02:17joke on the first movie like it's Todd Phillips saying that his first Joker movie was terrible
02:23there a lot of very cynical things happening in the movie that are meant to be commentary
02:26on the first movie during the later part of the movie Joker hallucinates a Joker TV show
02:31called Joker and Harley where they're singing and dancing meant to be a parody of the Sonny
02:35and Cher show they sing if I ain't got you babe can like they sing on their TV show in
02:39real life in the middle of singing Joker breaks character for second and they start to argue
02:45over what their performance is really meant to be about Joker wants it to be all about
02:49him.
02:50He thinks Harley's trying to make it about herself suspicion that we're not giving the
02:54people what they want.
02:59She says they're doing this for the fans that came to watch them in Joker says I've got
03:03a sneaking suspicion were not giving the people what they want.
03:07So this is meant to be a meta commentary for what the movie is all about in Todd Phillips
03:12himself in his relationship with the fans basically pointing at the fans of the first
03:17movie who came to the second movie expecting Joker to do more crazy things like he did
03:21during the first movie and not actually getting that.
03:24So this is a good tee up for the ending of the movie which sort of does something like
03:28this, but in a much more literal much more direct way sort of like Todd Phillips giving
03:32a middle finger to the studio with $200 million like that's how much the second movie costs
03:36and giving a middle finger to the fans who wanted something different from the character
03:41basically restating the themes the Joker is forced to continue being Joker by Harley
03:45Quinn and doesn't want to do that like Todd Phillips in real life feels like he's forced
03:50by the fans in the studio to make a sequel that he didn't want to make.
03:53That's basically what the entire movie is is like a sequel that he didn't want to make.
03:58So is gonna make a movie about not wanting to make a sequel really good comparison would
04:02be with Todd Phillips did with the hangover part three basically same vibe successful
04:06comedy franchise everybody saw at least one of those movies at some point, but when he
04:10got to the hangover part three they made so much money like the studio basically forced
04:14him to make hangover part three that whole movie was met a commentary about how he hated
04:19the franchise now like he hated his hangover franchise didn't want to do it anymore he
04:23to the studio in the fans for making him make that third movie that he didn't want to do.
04:27So he's done that now, but with the Joker character.
04:31So at the very end of the movie during his trial Joker finally breaks his Joker character
04:36and starts talking as Arthur again to the jury saying he can't do this anymore.
04:41He just wants to die.
04:42He wants this all to be blown up and to start his life over again.
04:46So the idea is the jury's gonna convict him of the murders from the first movie he'll
04:49get the death sentence and will be executed.
04:52He now wants that like he wants to die like I want it all to be done blow it all up that
04:57a couple of Joker's fans blow up the courthouse he escapes finds Harley Quinn standing on
05:02the steps from the first movie where he dance wearing Harley Quinn makeup who then rejects
05:07him for not wanting to be the Joker anymore.
05:09Like if you think the Joker's fake then I don't care about you anymore get out of here.
05:13He's taken back to prison where he just continues to sit quietly waiting for his death penalty
05:17to eventually be carried out then he gets called to see another visitor who's come to
05:21see him.
05:22We never see who the visitor was if it was Harley Quinn who would come back to see him
05:25or if it was another fan of his before he can meet that person another inmate that we've
05:30been seeing throughout the movie clocking him approaches him and asked to tell him his
05:35own joke about a fan meeting a sad clown in a bar and winds up being super disappointed
05:40with him when he finally sees him sitting there not being what he expected him to be
05:45his joke is meant to be a much clearer meta commentary for the themes of the movie and
05:49now he was a fan of Joker's from the events of the first movie he's meant to represent
05:53all the Batman DC comics fans in real life who came to this second movie also mad that
05:58they didn't get what they wanted from a sequel then tells him the sad clown gets what he
06:03deserves which was a line that Arthur used in the first movie when he killed Murray gold
06:07on his talk show stabbing Joker repeatedly killing him then proceeds to cut a smile into
06:13his face and laugh in the style of Heath Ledger's joke from the dark knight movie.
06:18So there's a lot going on in the scene like it's both meta commentary about what's actually
06:22going on.
06:23But also there's a lot of people asking about the more direct Batman dark knight DC comics
06:27connections here like what's actually happening.
06:29Everyone's asking if this is meant to be Todd Phillips saying that this movie is meant to
06:33be a prequel to the dark knight somehow Christian Bale Christopher Nolan's dark knight trilogy
06:37in this is the birth of Heath Ledger's Joker is it the scars.
06:46Here's the thing about that.
06:47I do not think that is actually meant to be a prequel to Heath Ledger's Joker like this
06:51character is not meant to be Heath Ledger's Joker just because the timeline does not work
06:55out at all you have to remember that this movie takes place after the end of the first
07:00movie like there's no big time jump.
07:02It's still in the 1970s.
07:03So Heath Ledger's Joker would be about the same age as that young boy version of Bruce
07:08Wayne from the first movie.
07:10This new Joker with the scars who seems like he's going to take the place of the Arthur
07:14Fleck Joker is meant to be Todd Phillips actual final betrayal and middle finger to the studio
07:19middle finger to the fans basically saying is this what you wanted me to do will screw
07:23you here it is this isn't what I wanted to do I'm gonna show you what you wanted to see
07:28but deny you the thing that you wanted from this Arthur Fleck Joker who is now dead as
07:32the camera sort of pans into his dying face Todd Phillips said after the movie because
07:37people kept asking about Harley Quinn sequels with Lady Gaga's character like you to do
07:41more spinoffs will be more sequels with this new version the Joker and he basically chuckled
07:45saying this was the end of his time in the DC universe doing DC movies Batman related
07:50stuff that was what all of Joker's lines towards the end of the movie were all about
07:54saying that he can't do this anymore.
07:56Just let me die.
07:57I want it all to blow up and be done then he does die and it is over.
08:01So the Joker in this whole movie like the entire movie is meant to represent Todd Phillips
08:06in real life like that's the way they wrote it wanting us to think that Todd Phillips
08:10is being made to suffer forced to make the sequel forced to continue this Joker character
08:14doing things that he doesn't want to have anything to do with a sequel that he did not
08:18want to make basically Todd Phillips telling everyone leave me alone.
08:22I don't want to have anything to do with this anymore goodbye.
08:25So that's why there's so many seeming dead ends during the movie were seeming setups
08:28and other characters that keep wanting him to be Joker do Joker things being excited
08:34about what might be happening like all this crazy stuff the fans that you see watching
08:37his trial during the movie you really learn too much about Harley Quinn or what her ultimate
08:41endgame was like what was Harley Quinn planning what was their eventual ending going to be
08:46if Arthur was going to be acquitted of the murders and make it out of prison earlier
08:51in the movie.
08:52The guards let her into his solitary confinement.
08:54So they wind up having sex.
08:56She tells him a little bit later in the movie that she's pregnant which is really surprised
09:00by like he's actually acting is Arthur Fleck like is not pretending to be Joker just really
09:04surprised by all like what was going on like how we gonna deal with this.
09:07If you're pregnant at the end of the movie on the steps where he danced during the first
09:11movie where she's rejecting him.
09:12He also asked her like what about our baby you're supposed to be pregnant all because
09:16she's telling him to get lost when he confronts her more about her pregnancy in this potential
09:21baby that they're going to have.
09:22She starts seeing that's entertainment which means that she was lying when she told him
09:27she was pregnant earlier because earlier in the movie Joker learns that she'd been lying
09:32about her back story where she came how she wound up in Arkham in the first place.
09:36So the whole idea with Harley Quinn in the movie is that she's meant to be a surrogate
09:39for the fans of the first movie obsessed with Joker from the first movie, but throughout
09:44the film.
09:45She continually lies to him just to get close to him just because she wants him to continue
09:49being the Joker character later in the movie during his trial she tries to convince him
09:53to fire his lawyer who's actually like a real normal lawyer actually try to do a good job
09:57of representing him explain that he's really sick he had a psychotic break and he was ultimately
10:02responsible for the deaths during the first movie.
10:05The actual trial itself is also meant to be meta commentary with them relitigating the
10:09events of the first movie and I think a lot of it is Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix
10:13coming after people in real life who after the first movie idealized the Joker character
10:18is them trying to say to everyone know the Joker is reprehensible.
10:22He deserves to die.
10:24You shouldn't idealize this villain.
10:26It's a little bit like the Homelander phenomenon on the boys with like Anthony star who plays
10:30Homelander basically saying that his character is like the worst possible being alive.
10:35But in real life.
10:36There are ton of Homelander fans who love him and just want to see him doing terrible
10:40things succeeding like beating the crap out of everybody all over the planet and during
10:44the events of the boys franchise the last couple of seasons they been mostly using the
10:48character is a parody of real-life political figures.
10:51So in Joker to this is Todd Phillips basically saying that he has the same relationship with
10:56the Joker character like no no no you have it wrong.
10:59This character isn't someone to be admired.
11:01This is terrible and I want it all to be gone.
11:03I want it all to blow up.
11:05Do not be sorry for him or for Joaquin Phoenix Joaquin Phoenix got paid $20 million to make
11:09the sequel movie.
11:10I don't know how much Todd Phillips got paid to make it, but he got about $100 million
11:15after the first movie grossed over a billion dollars.
11:17So this is after Todd Phillips made the hangover franchise that made a ton of money.
11:20He's been a bunch of successful movies.
11:22He has more money than he'll ever be able to spend.
11:24So even if Joker to winds up bombing at the box office.
11:27He does not care personally like he's already been paid his fee for directing even if he
11:32doesn't get more money on top of that he's totally fine.
11:35Personally I think it's a very bold choice, but it's in line with what Todd Phillips has
11:39done in the past.
11:40If you remember like I said is just like when he made the hangover part three basically
11:45use that movie for similar type of commentary everybody post all your reactions to the ending
11:50in the comments below the movie just in general.
11:52What I'll probably do is like a top 10 WTF video later this weekend talking about more
11:57details during the movie because there are a lot of questions about specific plot points
12:01a lot of dead ends that they never really fully pay off.
12:03There also a lot of deleted scenes that they cut out of the movie that we saw in the trailer.
12:07So I'll explain those two everybody click here for that video I'll update the link as
12:11soon as I post it and click here for my review of the movie.
12:14Thank you so much for watching and I'll see you guys the next one!
