Though she's a talented gymnast, Janey (Sarah Jessica Parker) has always followed the orders of her strict Army colonel father and stayed out of the spotlight. However, when she moves to a new town and meets the carefree Lynne (Helen Hunt), she disobeys her father for the first time in her life. With Lynne's encouragement, Janey enters a TV dance competition -- and soon finds herself with both a cute dance partner and an archrival who is dead set on getting Janey eliminated from the contest.

00:13:34What's up?
00:13:36Um, well, see, there's this contest
00:13:38that I really want to enter.
00:13:40A little healthy competition, that's good for the soul.
00:13:42That's the spirit.
00:13:43Well, see, what I do is I go downtown on Friday
00:13:45and I get to dance, and then if they like me,
00:13:47then I rehearse every night, and then if I win,
00:13:49I'm gonna be on TV, all right?
00:13:50Negative, A, I don't want you going all over this town
00:13:53before I've done any reconnaissance.
00:13:55Chicago's a tough city.
00:13:56I've gotta install an alarm system in this house.
00:13:59And B, you're too young to go out at night,
00:14:02except for the occasional supervised school activity.
00:14:04When you're 18, then you're entitled to some nightlife.
00:14:07Now, we had a deal, remember?
00:14:09We made a deal when I was seven and a half.
00:14:11Nightlife was the Muppet Show!
00:14:13Don't sass me!
00:14:14I'm sorry, sir.
00:14:17I'm doing this for your own good.
00:14:19Yeah, you forgot to say you'll thank me for this one day.
00:14:25So I said, sister, please, anybody could have confused
00:14:28Hail Mary with Proud Mary, and besides,
00:14:30I do a very good Tina Turner.
00:14:33What did you do?
00:14:34Made me wash all of her blackboards,
00:14:36but that's okay because I broke every piece of her chalk
00:14:38into tiny little pieces.
00:14:40You know, you can't wear that to the audition.
00:14:42I know.
00:14:44Are you backing out?
00:14:45Lynn, look, my father won't let me go,
00:14:47and my mother says that we have to let him win a few battles
00:14:49so that he can win the war, whatever that means.
00:14:51Well, that means you're going anyway.
00:14:52Lynn, I can't, they won't let me go!
00:14:55Do you do everything you're told?
00:15:00Oh, God, you do.
00:15:02Um, look, there's your bus.
00:15:04Good luck, all right, and will you call me tonight?
00:15:07I'm sorry.
00:15:09I'm sorry, too.
00:15:11Bye.

00:15:27You can do it, you can do it!
00:15:29Take my hand, Lynn, take my hand!
00:15:32It's all a matter of appearances.
00:15:34If you show up at the audition on a motorcycle,
00:15:36you're a wild kid, but if you tool up in a Mercedes,
00:15:39you're a man to be reckoned with.
00:15:42Drew, when are you gonna get rid of this thing?
00:15:44That's your problem, man.
00:15:45You don't need to know.

00:15:54That's your problem, man.
00:15:55You don't understand that this car makes a statement.
00:15:58Yeah, it says, hi, I'm garbage.

00:17:21Okay. I'll wait until after the contest.
00:17:24I'll call them collector's items charged up.
00:17:27Hey, beautiful. Stop looking. You found me.
00:17:32Great!
00:17:34That's nice going, Drew. I always wanted you for a brother-in-law.
00:17:37She's a punk.
00:17:40Do you really think I'm punk?
00:17:43Well, that's outrageous. I mean, it's not as cool as New Wave,
00:17:46but it's a lot better than preteen.
00:17:49So do all women throw themselves at your feet,
00:17:51or is it just the ones that can't reach any higher?
00:17:54Come on, Romeo.

00:18:00Please. Thank you.

00:25:43What are you doing?
00:25:44I, no, I want to take just one of those.
00:25:48You looked great.

00:25:51I'm sorry.
00:25:52It's all right.
00:25:53Did you catch my dance partner?
00:25:54I wasn't dancing.

00:25:56There he is with that cheese bomb.
00:26:00Lynn, she set this up.
00:26:02We're going to tell Iroh, OK?

00:26:07Getting even.
00:26:12Did you get her number?
00:26:13Yeah, zero.

00:26:19555-4102.
00:26:25I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings.
00:26:26I didn't mean to.
00:26:28You look great today.
00:26:29It's your fool Drew.
00:26:31Anybody could fool him.
00:26:34You know, last year I caught him undressing my Barbie doll.
00:26:39Aren't I ever going to grow up?
00:26:41Maggie, you're 12.
00:26:42Next October, you'll be 13.
00:26:43Then you'll be 14.
00:26:44That's the way it goes.
00:26:46I don't mean age.
00:26:49I mean women stuff.
00:26:53Don't make fun.
00:26:55Mom never got to that part.
00:26:58Well, I don't know who's going to explain it to you now.
00:27:00I mean, Dad's no good.
00:27:01All he told me was, don't be embarrassed, son.
00:27:04Just don't read Playboy right before you go to bed.
00:27:06Hi.
00:27:07Hi, Pop.
00:27:08I take it supper's ready?
00:27:10Yep.
00:27:11Hi, Max.
00:27:12Hi.
00:27:13So how was work, Pop?
00:27:15Oh, positively stimulating, as usual.
00:27:20I take it that's for me?
00:27:21Absolutely.
00:27:22Thanks.
00:27:23You're not too tired, are you, Dad?
00:27:25Again?
00:27:26You broke it again?
00:27:27I didn't break it.
00:27:28It just sort of fell off.
00:27:30Max, I don't understand how that doorknob keeps coming off.
00:27:33I mean, that's the fourth time this month, you know?
00:27:36Thank you, Lord, for this food.
00:27:38She dances with it.
00:27:39What?
00:27:41So when I finally get asked to dance, I'll know what to do.
00:27:44My sister dances with doors.
00:27:45She's the original slam dancer.
00:27:47He should talk, Daddy.
00:27:49He's going to dance on TV.
00:27:51Maggie?
00:27:52Care to clue me in?
00:27:57I auditioned for a dance contest.
00:27:59And he made the finals.
00:28:03And then they choose the winners on DTV.
00:28:05What's the prize?
00:28:06You get to be a regular on dance TV.
00:28:09Uh, what's this have to do with trade school?
00:28:15Look, you don't want college.
00:28:17Well, that's okay with me, but, uh...
00:28:20I was in a hurry to get going when I was your age, too.
00:28:22But you got to have a skill, Jeff.
00:28:25You got to start earning a living sooner or later.
00:28:27Look, trade school was good enough for my father,
00:28:29and it was good enough for me.
00:28:33That's not funny.
00:28:35Don't throw a mental, Dad.
00:28:38I liked it better when you kids used to humor me.
00:28:44Hold my calls.
00:28:50It's affirmative.
00:28:51The credit card does work on the bathroom wall.
00:28:53Zachary, you're a pervert. Will you get out of here?
00:28:56Telephone. It's a boy.
00:28:58Want Dad to take a message?
00:29:00Still can't write, you know.
00:29:09Um, hi.
00:29:11Dad, I can't believe you remember my phone number.
00:29:14You still at home? What you do, young lady?
00:29:16Yeah, um...
00:29:17Who is it?
00:29:18It's my friend Lynn.
00:29:20Lynn? Oh, great.
00:29:23I'll make it short.
00:29:25I'll just... I'll be a second.
00:29:29Hi, I'm back.
00:29:30Meet me at the rehearsal hall at 9 o'clock.
00:29:32I'll bring the music.
00:29:33Hey, watch out!
00:29:35Goodbye.
00:29:36I don't know if I can...
00:29:44Sorry. Needed the phone.
00:29:46Number four, the cabbage patch mother's having a PTA meeting?
00:29:49You're cranky.
00:29:50Whenever Emily Holland's brother's cranky, it means a girl's dumping.
00:29:54You want to get dumped? I'll dump you.
00:29:56No! Dad!
00:30:04Enter.
00:30:06Just checking. How about a little status report? Algebra?
00:30:08Um, almost done.
00:30:10English?
00:30:11One chapter left.
00:30:12Biology?
00:30:13Finished.
00:30:14History?
00:30:15Say, you up to the French at any war yet?
00:30:18Boy, what a little light artillery you could have done there.
00:30:21Well, I knew you'd have it under control.
00:30:23Lights out at ten sharp. Good night, honey.
00:30:46All alone?
00:30:50If you ever want to practice your moves, give me a call.
00:30:54If you ever want to practice your moves, give me a call.
00:31:15First it was in my bedroom. Then it was in 711 by your house.
00:31:18Then it was in George's English class.
00:31:20Only in this stream, sometimes she wasn't Mr. George.
00:31:22She was that J.B. cheerleader who wears his almost see-through underpants.
00:31:25Can you be quiet for two seconds?
00:31:27Yeah, sure.
00:31:28You probably meant more than two seconds.
00:31:30I mean, two seconds is like nothing.
00:31:32One, two, there, that's two seconds.
00:31:37I hate it when you're in a bad mood.
00:31:39I'm not in a bad mood.
00:31:40Sweetheart, when are you gonna buy yourself a nice, sexy Catholic school uniform?
00:31:44Hey, get off of my case, all right?
00:31:47Come on, Patty, we're not welcome here.
00:31:49Uh, not so fast.
00:31:51Patty and I have a little business to attend to.
00:31:53The term papers are in.
00:31:55Eisenhower, Johnson, Kennedy.
00:31:57Kennedy, oh, he was so cute. How much?
00:32:00A date with me.
00:32:01I'll take Johnson.
00:32:04Hey, I heard those Catholic school girls really put out.
00:32:07Hey, hey, Jeff's very touchy this morning.
00:32:09Must have had a rough night breaking in his new dance partner.
00:32:11Yeah? That's what you think.
00:32:13He didn't even see her. She stood him up.
00:32:15Oh!
00:32:20He's giving like her a celebration.
00:32:22Okay.
00:32:24Gloria
00:32:32In excelsis Deo
00:32:37Gloria
00:32:48In excelsis Deo
00:32:57Deo
00:32:59Deo, you say Deo, you say Deo, you say Deo, you say Deo.
00:33:02There is a time and a place for Calypso music, young lady.
00:33:08Open your hymnals to page 57.
00:33:12We will now sing Amazing Grace.
00:33:16What page?
00:33:17Lynn Stone will join us and sing it like an American.
00:33:28So where were you last night? I waited out there for an hour and a half.
00:33:31I tried to tell you that I couldn't go, but you hung up too fast.
00:33:35Are you going to do homework now? That's terrific.
00:33:38For your information, I've just made some notes about some steps
00:33:41in case there's something you can't do.
00:33:43I can do any step you can do.
00:33:45Really?
00:33:47Because I was thinking we'd start out with something like this.
00:33:51It's a little babyish, don't you think?
00:33:53Babyish?
00:33:55Look, I've been taking gymnastics and dance for ten years.
00:33:57What did you have in mind?
00:33:59It's a little babyish.
00:34:06It's a little babyish.
00:34:08It's a little babyish.
00:34:11It's a little babyish.
00:34:14It's a little babyish.
00:34:16It's a little babyish.
00:34:18What did you have in mind?
00:34:21Well, I thought we could start out with something like this.
00:34:29Yeah.
00:34:30I saw that in three different videos in a Levi's commercial.
00:34:33Come here.
00:34:38Go like this.
00:34:40Five, six, seven, eight.
00:34:49That's good.
00:34:51Okay, come back to me now.
00:34:53I'm just going to spin you out, and I want you to come back to me, all right?
00:34:57Out and back.
00:34:59Out.
00:35:00Come back.
00:35:01Come back to me.
00:35:02No, but it's not right.
00:35:03You're always going to wear that uniform?
00:35:05Look, I've got news for you.
00:35:06I had to sneak out of choir practice to get here, all right?
00:35:08It wasn't easy, and it wasn't fun.
00:35:10Excuse me.
00:35:12Do either one of you have change for a 20?
00:35:15Gosh, I don't have anything smaller than a 50.
00:35:18I'm sorry.
00:35:20It's my loss.
00:35:22Have fun.
00:35:26Look, we're wasting time, all right?
00:35:27Let's get back to work.
00:35:29Okay.
00:35:31Is this Mr. Glenn?
00:35:32Yes.
00:35:33This is Sister Natalie.
00:35:35Do you know where Janie is?
00:35:37No, I thought she was in school.
00:35:39No, she's not here.
00:35:42Please tell her if she can't make it regularly to choir,
00:35:45I'm going to have to replace her.
00:35:47Well, I'll talk to her this evening, Sister.
00:35:51You're welcome.
00:36:00You just keep going around.
00:36:03Will you stop showing off?
00:36:04We're supposed to be partners, or did you forget?
00:36:06I wish I could forget.
00:36:08Oh, really?
00:36:09Because, you know, if you want to quit,
00:36:10that's okay with me.
00:36:17What's the matter with him?
00:36:19I hate him.
00:36:21He's a guy and he's alive.
00:36:22What's there to hate?
00:36:24He's just, ugh, you know?
00:36:27I mean, ugh!
00:36:29Good, I like those qualities in a man.
00:36:31You know, I've been locked up in a room with him
00:36:32for over an hour, and let me tell you, it was hideous.
00:36:35Is he going to call you tomorrow?
00:36:37Yeah, I think so.
00:36:53I'm holding this for ransom.
00:36:56Oh, did you and Shirley Temple have a bad rehearsal?
00:37:00Yeah, it wasn't one of the best five afternoons of my life.
00:37:04I'm not really in the mood to shoot the breeze,
00:37:06if you don't mind.
00:37:08Fine.
00:37:10I don't want to hold you up.
00:37:13But I do want to invite you to the biggest
00:37:16and best debutante ball of the year.
00:37:18Fine.
00:37:20Now, you don't have to come,
00:37:23but I'll save you a slow dance just in case.
00:37:35I don't have any redeeming qualities.
00:37:37Uh-uh.
00:37:39All he does is talk about himself
00:37:41and that stupid motorcycle.
00:37:44I bet she's a good kisser.
00:37:47Oh, that is so gross.
00:37:49I mean, I cannot even imagine kissing him.
00:37:53Whenever I'm in a room with a guy,
00:37:55no matter who it is, I kiss him.
00:37:58I don't care who he is.
00:38:01Whenever I'm in a room with a guy,
00:38:03no matter who it is, a date, my dentist, anybody, I think,
00:38:06if we were the last two people on earth,
00:38:09would I puke if he kissed me?
00:38:11Zach to Janie. Zach to Janie.
00:38:15Yeah, what's going on?
00:38:17Sister Natalie called. You're in big trouble.
00:38:19$2 and a small change in front of my door.
00:38:22Sister Natalie?

00:38:47Okay, kiddo, you're home, you're safe, you're alive.
00:38:50Oh, my God, what happened?
00:38:52She overdid it. It was gymnastics tryouts.
00:38:54She hyperventilated on the uneven parallel bars.
00:38:57She almost spun to death.
00:38:59I had to rip her fingers off.
00:39:03Okay, bye.

00:51:14Do you mean you can't fix the contest?
00:51:18Or you won't?
00:51:20Princess, you're going to have to start
00:51:22learning to fend for yourself.
00:51:23I keep telling you that.
00:51:24It's a cold world out there.
00:51:26Daddy, I don't want to win the contest for me.
00:51:30I want to win it for you.
00:51:35I couldn't stand it if those tacky kids,
00:51:38Janie and Jeff, won.
00:51:40After they trashed your party,
00:51:43and embarrassed you in front of all your friends.
00:51:49And on top of everything else,
00:51:52they ruined your beautiful silver hair.

00:54:17It's World War II,
00:54:18and our ship is going down in the middle of the Pacific,
00:54:20and our only hope is the shortwave radio.

00:55:13This is so exciting.
00:55:14Get on.
00:55:15I don't know, are you sure it's safe?
00:55:16It's the safest thing you'll ever have between your legs.
00:55:18What?
00:55:19Nothing.
00:55:20Hold on.

00:56:30No, I'm...
00:56:31I really...

00:56:41I bet I get hit by a car.
00:56:43What?
00:56:44No, things are going too well.
00:56:45I mean, besides D.T.V., I have a best friend.
00:56:47And, I mean, I never dreamed in a million years
00:56:49that I would have a boyfriend.
00:56:52Who's this boyfriend?
00:56:55No, I mean, I didn't...
00:56:56I didn't mean to...
00:56:57Oh, God.
00:57:00Look, if you talk to your boyfriend,
00:57:01you're just gonna have to tell him tough luck.
00:57:04Because you're gonna be with me every night this week.
00:57:09So we're in this thing together, huh?
00:57:12We sure are.

00:59:33Now I'm stronger than ever
00:59:35I'm taking hold of my life

00:59:46I can fly
00:59:52I can fly
00:59:54I can go forever
00:59:56I'm gonna reach for the sky
00:59:59No one will ever show me how
01:00:04But soon as you know, I can fly
01:00:11Can't sleep?
01:00:12Oh, God!
01:00:13Oh.
01:00:14Daddy, really, don't do that.
01:00:18Go ahead, sit down.
01:00:20By the way, why aren't you in your PJs?
01:00:23It's after midnight.
01:00:27I was dreaming that I was gonna be late for school.
01:00:30So I woke up and I got dressed.
01:00:32And then I looked at the clock.
01:00:35Yeah, but you wear a uniform to school.
01:00:36That's not a uniform.
01:00:38In my dream, I went to public school.
01:00:44Well, Janie, you know, your mother and I have been talking
01:00:46and we thought that this weekend
01:00:48we'd send you to St. Louis on a plane to see your grandmother.
01:00:50No!
01:00:51I think it's just what the doctor ordered.
01:00:53Well, not this weekend.
01:00:55Why not?
01:00:56There's a C-130 transport leaving on Saturday at 0800.
01:00:59Don't you want to see your grandmother?
01:01:01Well, yeah.
01:01:02I mean, I'm sure I do.
01:01:04Um, but see, I have to study this weekend.
01:01:07There's this really big Latin test on Monday
01:01:09and I'm way, way behind.
01:01:11Since when do you take Latin?
01:01:13Since last week, which is why I'm way behind.
01:01:18But thanks anyway, Dad.
01:01:20Um, I have to go back to bed again.
01:01:24Good night.
01:01:41What are you, crazy?
01:01:43Hey.
01:01:49I hope you weren't hurt.
01:01:54I'm J.P. Sands.
01:01:56Yeah, I know.
01:01:58Well, I didn't know whether you'd recognize me
01:02:00without the blueberry pie in my hair.
01:02:02Are you in a big hurry?
01:02:04Yeah, kind of.
01:02:08When I was about your age, I worked in a bottling factory.
01:02:12I own the factory now.
01:02:14Matter of fact, I own a lot of factories,
01:02:16including the one where your father works.
01:02:20I'm very happy for you.
01:02:23Don't smart mouth me.
01:02:25You know, I bet you and I are a lot more alike than you think.
01:02:30I'll bet you don't want your father to lose his job
01:02:32any more than I want my daughter to lose that dance contest.
01:02:43By the way, if you'd like to come to my country club again,
01:02:46let me know.
01:02:48I can always use a good caddy.
01:03:12Hi. Hi.
01:03:16Hey, what's wrong?
01:03:18Nothing's wrong. What's wrong with you?
01:03:21Nothing. I just, you know, I thought since you were late...
01:03:24Excuse me. I didn't realize we were punching a clock, okay?
01:03:28Well, we are. Come on. Today is our last date.
01:03:30Not now. Please?
01:03:33All right, no problem. Let's get to work.
01:03:35Do you have a tape?
01:03:38No, I forgot it.
01:03:40Come on, Jeff. That's not funny.
01:03:42Look, I'm telling you, I forgot the tape.
01:03:44But think about things beside the stupid contest, you know.
01:03:48All right, so who needs music anyway?
01:03:50Um, let's go through the routine. Do you want to warm up first?
01:03:54Look, would you quit treating me like you're the star dancer
01:03:56and I'm some poor little clod you got stuck with?
01:03:59Not everyone needs to warm up.
01:04:01Yes, they do.
01:04:03Oh, excuse me. I forgot you were also the authority on warming up.
01:04:07Look, I don't know what's bugging you,
01:04:09but I think that we should talk about it.
01:04:11I said no.
01:04:13I'm not dancing with you until you calm down.
01:04:16What, are you threatening me now?
01:04:18I mean, that's what you're doing, right?
01:04:20Well, forget it. I'm sick of this whole thing anyway.
01:04:23God, you are so naive, Janie.
01:04:25You think we're going to win this thing? We're not going to win.
01:04:28We're only going to be in this stupid contest to make it look fair.
01:04:31But it's rigged. Everything's rigged.
01:04:34So what? You're just going to quit?
01:04:36I mean, just like that?
01:04:38Yeah, it looks that way, doesn't it?
01:04:43Get out of here. You make me sick.
01:04:47Thanks. I'll try and return the compliment someday.
01:04:50I'll see you later.
01:05:14Lady, you're in big trouble!
01:05:16Robert! Robert!
01:05:17to know why you lied about your Latin class,
01:05:20and then you skipped your choir practice,
01:05:22and now you snuck out of the house without our permission.
01:05:26Why?
01:05:29I don't know.
01:05:30Oh, I feel much better now that you've explained.
01:05:32You can't go traipsing all over a strange city
01:05:34in the middle of the night.
01:05:36I'm sorry if you don't understand that.
01:05:37Why does everybody think
01:05:39that I'm not gonna understand anything?
01:05:41You are grounded.
01:05:43Yeah, well, I don't have any place to go anyway.
01:05:48Hey.
01:06:00I don't know how the band's gonna play this year.
01:06:02Disabled list is as long as my arm.
01:06:07What's the matter?
01:06:08Nothing.
01:06:13It's our dance contest this time, isn't it?
01:06:15Don't be nervous.
01:06:16I'm not nervous.
01:06:19I'm not entering.
01:06:22Well, why not?
01:06:23Hey, Mag said that you and your partner
01:06:24were in a dimension beyond reality.
01:06:28I guess that means you're good, huh?
01:06:29Look, I'm not into contests, all right?
01:06:31They're for people who are into being number one.
01:06:34Oh, and you're not into being number one?
01:06:36No.
01:06:42I hear you're coming up in the world,
01:06:45making the country club scene.
01:06:46How'd you hear about that?
01:06:49Bad news travels fast, especially
01:06:51when it happens to J.P. Sands.
01:06:53I hate him.
01:06:57Don't say that.
01:06:58Now, he's a greedy, stupid putz, granted, but don't hate him.
01:07:04I ran into him last night.
01:07:09Oh?
01:07:10What'd he say?
01:07:11He said he could put your job on the line.
01:07:15Is that true?
01:07:20So what?
01:07:21So I can't dance in the contest, can I?
01:07:23Look, Jeff, tell me one thing.
01:07:25Can you win?
01:07:26Yeah.
01:07:28Yeah, I can win.
01:07:30Well, then, win it!
01:07:32I'll worry about Sands.

01:08:11She told me to tell you, you're just going to dance.
01:08:20Oh, god, I forgot I'm grounded.
01:08:23Zack, what am I going to do?
01:08:26You know what Daddy would say?
01:08:28When all hope is lost, call for reinforcements.
01:08:34Zack, you're the best.
01:08:36Forget it.
