Transcript
00:00It's time to bring the action here in Charlotte, North Carolina.
00:11Let's go.
00:12Under Oval.
00:13Greg Biffle, the honoree starter.
00:14Here comes Logano.
00:15You heard the pre-race pimp talk.
00:16He's on it straightaway.
00:17First stage, only 25 laps.
00:18The aggression high right away.
00:19You see the yellow banners on the top of the windshield.

00:25Let's go.
00:26Under Oval.
00:27Greg Biffle, the honoree starter.
00:28It's time to bring the action here in Charlotte, North Carolina.
00:29You see the yellow banners on the top of the windshield.
00:30That's a great way to signify a playoff driver.
00:33They're looking for spots and spots right away.
00:37Amending up on the attack.
00:43This is the new section.
00:45Turn five.
00:46Climbing a hill right here.
00:47Now they're going to go down into turn seven.
00:50The left hander, 180 degrees, 45 miles an hour.
00:54It's got to feel stopped inside the race car, a lot of contact.
00:57You can see the options.
00:58You can try the top.
00:59You can try the bottom.
01:00Now we're going to see our first look at this front chicane at speed with the new curbing.
01:06Shane Van Gisburg and Joey Logano, Kyle Larson, AJ Allmendinger, Tyler Rettig, Austin Sindring
01:12is in the same boat as his team penske teammate, Joey Logano.
01:16They have to have a great day to advance.
01:18And given the fact, here goes Larson on the inside at seven.
01:21That's what we saw all day yesterday, but look what Larson did when he ran in there.
01:25He overdrove the corner, and he just shoved Joey Logano completely out of the way.
01:30Joey Logano lost three spots, and I can promise you, that guy in that 22, he is hot right
01:37now because he just got abused.
01:39Allmendinger and Rettig were there to pounce.
01:41Rettig is on the inside.
01:43Allmendinger's got the preferred line through that back chicane.
01:46Let's take you back and show you something that went down with playoff driver Alex Bowman.
01:52Here's the 48.
01:53Keep your eye on the ally Chevy.
01:56Whoa!
01:58Wow.
02:00That just launched.
02:03You can see what happens.
02:06There's no visibility.
02:07He's right behind the cars in front of him.
02:09He turns.
02:10He doesn't even know he's getting ready to hit those curbs.
02:13You can see we already saw one penalty over here.
02:16Here's Truex just on the wrong side of the curbs.
02:21One of the reasons this is happening is because of the change overnight.
02:26Taking those big blue turtles out of there, it now is an easier transition.
02:31You roll over there, and it's so much flatter, right?
02:34Before, when you hit it, you knew it.
02:37It actually hurt the race car drivers.
02:39It didn't help the race car any.
02:40Now it's a lot easier to roll through there, and I just think the drivers, it's a new look
02:46for them, and some of them are learning the hard way.
02:50Right.
02:53Got some radio on the penalties from the 11 of Denny Hamlin.
02:57Have a listen.
02:58They just got marked behind you for the same thing.
03:01Turn 16th.
03:02Be mindful of it.
03:03Do not take any chances here.
03:08Just watch that front stretch.
03:10They busted a few people on that.
03:12Copy that.
03:13It's really hard to see.
03:15Here comes the pit road.
03:18It's going to be valuable.
03:20Ten points for Reddick.
03:22Marty?
03:23He's bringing it down pit road, and it's surprisingly lonely pit road for SVG.
03:28Coming down with three laps to go here in stage one.
03:31Zero complaints for the car except for at the very end of the run, lost a little bit
03:35of rear grip.
03:36The interesting part is that Billy Scott was thinking about bringing Tyler Reddick down
03:40pit road.
03:41In fact, the crew was ready to bring him down pit road, but Billy Scott, when he saw the
03:45opportunity for the ten stage points, he's on the bottom of your screen, said, that's
03:49too much to give up.
03:50Also, the playoff points for Reddick will stay on the track.
03:53It's the end of stage one, and Tyler Reddick and 23.11 Racing have needed this big time.
04:02Big points in the bank goes to Tyler Reddick to complete stage one.
04:06Joey Logano follows him across the line in second.
04:09Five playoff drivers in the top ten earning stage point.
04:14Gets get ready to go.
04:15Stage two here in the row ball.
04:17It's on.
04:18Armendinger on the attack early on.
04:20He's calling teammate.
04:23Watch that Celsius number 16.
04:25He's on the outside of SVG.
04:29It's going to give Armendinger the inside run for the next switchback.
04:32Is he close enough to the Kiwi?
04:34Not quite.
04:40William Byron well placed.
04:42Daniel Suarez on the attack in the 99.
04:44Just outside the top ten.
04:45It's a must win for the Mexican driver if he wants to stay alive in the NASCAR cup series
04:51playoffs.
04:52Great shot.
04:53This new section.
04:54They're headed to turn seven.
04:56Some drivers are going to hang a left right here.
04:58Shortcut to racetrack.
04:59Trying to pick up spots.
05:01Look how aggressive it is.
05:04Somebody is around.
05:06The 3 of Austin Dillon.
05:0945 of Redick.
05:10That's who you're talking about.
05:12Nosed in behind him.
05:13Gives up a ton of positions.
05:15The stage one winner got jammed up at turn seven.
05:19Now he's got to play the catch-up game.
05:21Didn't look like a lot of damage on the 45.
05:24The 3 of Austin Dillon trying to get refired.
05:26He's able to do it.
05:30Oh.
05:32Got into the back of Bubba Wallace.
05:35That checked him up.
05:37Got into the back of the 3 and got him spun around.
05:39He's got the rear tires locked up.
05:41He's out of control.
05:42Boom.
05:43Right there.
05:44Into the 11 car with his right rear.
05:46The back of the car had to be a foot, 18 inches, two feet off the ground.
05:50This has got to be so violent.
05:52Listen to this on board.
05:54That was an endo like on a motocross bike.
05:59Back at the roval and under caution.
06:02Unfortunately, the playoff picture and story for Chase Briscoe,
06:06who celebrated with his wife Marissa the birth of twins earlier this week.
06:13That was the joyous moment.
06:15Right now is not so joyous.
06:17For his big picture story, Dave Burns in the playoffs.
06:21As the field is about to launch back into race mode.
06:24Larson, SVG, here we go.
06:31Christopher Bell nicely placed in that yellow number 20 for Joe Gibbs Racing.
06:35So, too, Brad Keselowski.
06:43William Byron in that Valvoline 24.
06:45Then Daniel Suarez.
06:47This is great placement for Suarez.
06:49Does he have a chance?
06:51Can he get out of the round of 12 and through to the round of 8
06:54with a victory today for 99 in track house racing?
07:00Bowman, Hosemar, Logano.
07:03Oh, aggressive move by Bell.
07:06Oh, Keselowski around.
07:08And it's caused a traffic jam.
07:10Briscoe's at the back of it.
07:12Haley's in it.
07:14And Brad Keselowski facing the wrong way.
07:16Now we watch the 23 and the 99.
07:18A lot of contact right here.
07:20And if you see the 23 car, the 23 car gave the 99 nowhere to go.
07:26So, NASCAR will let you not self-impose the penalty.
07:31They will give you a lap and they will make the call.
07:34So, in this situation, when you go in there side by side, Suarez is better off continuing on.
07:39Coming into this race, nobody had earned more stage points or more post-season points than Alex Bowman.
07:45He's going to maximize again.
07:47First stage win on a road course gives him ten points.
07:54Yeah, Lee, it's been an interesting day for Denny Hamlin.
07:56It's been a topic of conversation this entire playoffs.
07:59Right now, in a decent spot above the cut line.
08:02Just talked to Chris Capehart just moments ago.
08:04And he said, I think the car is about 85%.
08:06But there's nothing we can do to fix it.
08:09If we finish, Dave, in the bottom half of the top 20, I think we'll be fine.
08:13We'll advance.
08:14And that next round looks a lot better to us.
08:16Marty, I love it when we can be the bearers of good news.
08:19And that's what Cliff Daniels, crew chief for Kyle Larson, just gave through us to his driver.
08:25He said, TV just confirmed we have advanced through the next round.
08:29Good job.
08:30And it has been a good job today by Kyle Larson.
08:32Stage three, the Bank of America Roval 400.
08:35A.J. Armendinger will lead the field back to green.
08:38Joey Logano on that different strategy.
08:40Is it a gamble?
08:41Is it the right call?
08:42Here comes Bubba Wallace.
08:43Larson on the inside.
08:45Three wide into turn one.
08:46Kyle Busch right in the middle.
08:50Caution is for the debris you see on the track.
08:56It's a big week for Legacy Motor Club.
08:58They made a crew chief change on one car.
09:00They announced new director of competition, Brian Campy, long-time engineer in the sport.
09:05So continuing to try to build, but this is not the momentum they were looking for in week one with the changes.
09:10Left rear is just ripped.
09:13Yeah, really damaged.
09:14The ding is at the front.
09:16Joey Logano just got the direction from Paul Wolf.
09:19Stage three, tracks clean.
09:22Let's go.
09:23Defending race winner, A.J. Armendinger, wants to repeat that win.
09:27Wants to defend that win.
09:29And he's got that Celsius Chevy for calling racing flying out front.
09:32Fourth car in line, the blue and white number five of Larson.
09:35The much freshest tires, about 10 to 15 laps fresher than those in front.
09:39Can he make it more?
09:40Here we go.
09:41Here we go.
09:42Is there a chance for a move here?
09:44Traffic up ahead.
09:45Ryan Blaney is the car that's going to make life difficult.
09:48And the two who are fighting over that eighth and final transfer position, they weave through Chris Buescher.
09:53And Shane Van Gisbergen's around.
09:56Gets going again.
09:58So, too, does Buescher.
10:00We could have a second-screen experience of just turn seven.
10:02You could watch one corner all day long.
10:04It is the action spot of the track.
10:06Well, here is that action.
10:07Let's go back and see what happened.
10:10Carson Hosovar just nailed SVG.
10:14Watch this move right here into seven.
10:16What's he going to do?
10:17He's going to hang a left.
10:18Oh, he's loose!
10:20AJ's going to try to cross him over.
10:22He blocks him.
10:23That was a great move.
10:25That was maximizing every bit of speed.
10:27He was sideways loose and then had the wisdom and the experience of the day to just hang a left and block the bottom and not let AJ cross him over.
10:36This is going to bring a yellow out.
10:37Trying to see whose wheel we think it is.
10:40Oh, boy.
10:41He just came off pit road.
10:42Still had a sticker on the tire.
10:44So, it just never got tight.
10:48This would be a penalty with some suspensions.
10:51The tire got all the way on the racing surface.
10:55Yep.
10:56There it goes.
10:57There it goes.
10:58You see the sticker on the tire.
11:00That means it's brand new.
11:02Tyler Riddick is on the march as well.
11:05And that brings us to the most updated points scenario.
11:10Joey Logano is two above.
11:12Riddick is two below.
11:13Fellas, I think at the restart, Riddick was as much as 12 below.
11:17So, he is coming.
11:18New tires and a lot of aggression.
11:21And keep in mind, you just mentioned the two colleague teammates, Amedinger and SVG.
11:26They're on new tires, and they potentially are going to catch Logano, to pass Logano and move him back.
11:33And then there's more positions right ahead of Riddick that he can go get.
11:37This is what it's all about.
11:39These guys are fighting as hard as they can to make it to the round of eight.
11:44And Amedinger on the inside of Logano again.
11:46He's got it this time.
11:48Logano is going to drag race him down the straight.
11:51But see right there, the 16.
11:54He side drafts the 22, slows him down.
11:57Now, Logano has no choice but to give up the spot.
12:01Chevrolet versus Ford.
12:02Corlick versus Team Penske.
12:04Amedinger is there, and the playoff points are at 0-0.
12:09Now, they go back to one.
12:11More fluctuation.
12:12Zero.
12:13Still with 12 laps to go.
12:15All of the points that we're showing you, all that could change if this guy right here won the race.
12:22If you're a 23-11 Tyler Riddick fan, you are cheering.
12:27Because the points fluctuations are going in your favor.
12:32Riddick is now in the round of eight by two points.
12:37But there's still nine laps left in this race.
12:39What a drive.
12:41Billy Scott brings him down pit road for fresh tires.
12:43He's gained 14 positions since the restart.
12:49It's been a superstar performance.
12:51He's led 60 laps.
12:53Nobody has led that much here at the Roval.
12:56And now there's just one lap to go.
12:59Two and a quarter miles before he's got another career victory.
13:02Christa Ravel isn't close, but he's close enough that the 5 has to be very careful with this 99.
13:07You don't want to make a mistake at this point.
13:09You see maybe 25, 30 car lengths back.
13:11I mean, it's a big, big gap.
13:13But at a track like this, we have seen some big mistakes.
13:16I don't expect that out of the 5, but he has to figure out what he wants to do with this 99.
13:21And for Daniel Suarez, his playoff run ends here in just a lap time.
13:27The 99, the sole rep for Trackhouse as he waves Larson by on the inside.
13:36It's been a good run, an interesting run, but it's over for Suarez.
13:43It is far from over for Kyle Larson.
13:45The last time, the only time he's won here at the Roval,
13:49interestingly enough, was the year that he became a NASCAR Cup Series champion.
13:54Is that an omen for Kyle Larson and the HendrickCars.com Chevy team?
14:01Everybody here at the track has been raving about the weather this week.
14:06It has been just beautiful.
14:08And on a sunny fall afternoon, this California kid has just been dominant.
14:15He made up four positions on the opening couple of laps, and that was an omen.
14:21But for the second time in his career, Kyle Larson wins at the Roval.
14:26Christopher Bell follows him through into the round of eight.
14:30And look at that bottom box on the left.
14:33Tyler Reddick.
14:35Say whatever you want about him.
14:37Gritty, determined, tough.
14:39He's a fighter.
14:40His team at 23.11 are fighters, and they did not give up.
14:46They had an extra challenge ahead of them today,
14:49and they answered that call to fight and drive their way through into the round of eight.
