Im auf dem gleichnamigen Roman von Robert Harris basierenden Thriller Konklave kommen die Kardinäle der katholischen Kirche ihn Rom zusammen, um einen neuen Papst zu wählen. Kardinal Lomeli (Ralph Fiennes) hat die Aufgabe, für einen reibungslosen Ablauf zu sorgen. Doch als die ersten Intrigen beginnen, sich zu entspinnen, stellt Lomeli fest, dass der vorige Papst ein Geheimnis vor der Kirche hatte. Ein Geheimnis, das aufgedeckt werden muss, ehe ein neuer Papst gewählt ist.
