08:15Mexican culture suffers from authoritarianism. It is very strong, it is very heavy. Of course, we see ruptures, but there is a bed of authoritarianism that we still observe today.
08:28Through interviews and historical documentation, this film examines how the group used their music to criticize the Mexican political and social system, addressing issues such as extensive repression, lack of communication and, in general, the constant manipulation of the news by the media.
08:47It also highlights how this period of changes in the country was the cradle for the birth, development and success of the band to this day.

09:09Number 4. Chabela
09:12Isabel, as my mother calls me, the one I love. Chabela appeared in 1942.
09:18Chabela is a 2017 documentary directed by Catherine Gant and Darisha Kay. The film portrays the life of the iconic Mexican singer of Costa Rican origin, Chabela Vargas, known for her strong character and her way of defying the gender and sexuality norms of her time.
09:38Chabela Vargas, who broke the whole scheme of the ranchero singers and synthesizes them in what is really the song of the soul, of the tragic end of love.
09:50Through interviews never seen before, recorded 20 years before her death in 2012 and the participation of people close to Vargas, such as Alicia Pérez Duarte or Pedro Almodóvar, the documentary offers a journey through her life marked by her rebellion, her androgynous expression, her love for tequila and her deep relationship with ranchera music.
