It’s official: The Serpent Queen will not be returning for a third season on Starz. The news came shortly after the finale of season two, which aired in August. For those unfamiliar, The Serpent Queen is based on the book Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France by Leonie Frieda, and it has captivated audiences with the tumultuous life of Catherine de’ Medici, the 16th-century Queen of France.
In season two, Catherine’s reign faced major power struggles, betrayals, and conflict as she fought to keep France united. Samantha Morton gave an unforgettable performance as Catherine, leading an amazing cast that included Amrita Acharia, Enzo Cilenti, Ruby Bentall, and many more. The show was produced by Lionsgate Television and 3 Arts Entertainment, with Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games) and Erwin Stoff (The Matrix) serving as executive producers.
Now, while it's sad to see the series end after just two seasons, here’s some exciting news to lift your spirits—Starz is already working on a spinoff! The new show will focus on none other than Queen Elizabeth I, and while casting details haven’t been announced yet, we’re sure it’s going to be just as gripping.
The Serpent Queen was initially part of Starz’s push for what they called ‘premium female programming,’ now referred to as ‘female-forward’ content, aiming to showcase powerful stories about women throughout history. We’ll definitely miss Catherine’s fascinating story, but this spinoff about Elizabeth I is sure to fill the void!
