The introduction of 20 electric vehicle (EV) baggage tractors at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminals 1 and 2 is expected to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by an estimated 1,029 tonnes per year.

At the launch of the 20 EV baggage tractors on Thursday (Oct 10), Transport Minister Anthony Loke noted that these electric tractors will reduce carbon emissions by 66.7 per cent and fuel costs by 43.5 per cent per vehicle.

00:00We gather today at the Asia Digital Engineering MRO hangar to mark a significant milestone
00:18in Malaysia's journey towards sustainable aviation.
00:23The launch of ground team rates or GTR electric baggage tractors is more than a single company
00:29initiative.
00:30It represents a broader shift towards environmentally responsible practices in our aviation sector.
00:38Last month, we unveiled the Malaysia Aviation Decarbonisation Blueprint or MADB, charting
00:46our vision for a greener future in aviation.
00:50More importantly, the MADB outlines the responsibilities of all aviation stakeholders, be it airlines,
00:59airport operators, air traffic managers or ground handlers, to support the green transition.
01:06Today, we see a concrete example of this blueprint in action.
01:12The delivery of GTR's first 20 electric baggage tractors will see an estimated reduction of
01:181,029 tonnes of CO2 emissions over the period of a year.
01:25In the next one and a half year, GTR will have a total of 60 electric baggage tractors
01:30in operation, representing half of GTR's 119 baggage tractors currently powered by
01:37diesel at airports across the country.
01:39I was informed that the electric baggage tractors will result in a 66.7% reduction in carbon
01:46emission and 43.5% savings in fuel cost per vehicle.
01:52These numbers underscore a crucial point.
01:55Environmental responsibility and economic viability can go hand in hand.
02:01Sustainable choices can drive both ecological and financial benefits, creating a win-win
02:05situation for our industry and our planet.
02:09In the case of GTR's baggage tractors, going electric alone will cut carbon emissions by
02:14two-thirds, but we can aim higher by going for clean electricity and driving carbon emissions
02:21to zero.
02:22As we work towards our national goal of net zero emissions by 2050, projects like this
02:27are essential.
02:29They show that through innovation and commitment, we can transform our aviation sector to meet
02:34the challenges of climate change while maintaining operational efficiency.
02:43As mentioned earlier in our video as well, we are not looking at this as a just one-time
02:48event.
02:49We have plans to electrify all our equipment by 2050.
02:57By 2040, we expect close to about 75% of our equipment will be built on electric, but also
03:05at the same time, I think to echo what Minister mentioned earlier, it's not just about the
03:09electric vehicles, but cleaner energy that is being used to charge the electric vehicles.
03:15So I think this is important for us, and we are willing to share and support the industry
03:20and the key players, the authorities, the Malaysia airports as well, in terms of how
03:24we can move forward together in this journey.
