Debra Byrne - Good Morning Australia (March 2005)
Transcript
00:00Well, I do apologize. I mean, you have to apologize to the country for that.
00:05That's the best thing they're going to say.
00:07Well, there's nothing wrong with that, is there?
00:09Just in case you know, we'll have a little bit of fun because I thought Debra Byrne was absolutely wonderful in Sunset Boulevard
00:14and she thinks that I need some psychological attention.
00:17And we always run that as a little bit of a joke.
00:19We thought we'd put that first this morning. Wasn't it funny?
00:22It was very good.
00:23It is lovely to have Debra Byrne here, ladies and gentlemen.
00:28Do you realize what you've let yourself in for?
00:32I mean, look at this Tats Pokey tour for a start.
00:34I know. Isn't it wonderful?
00:35Yeah, you're going everywhere with that, starting on...
00:38Oh, actually, have you started already?
00:40Yeah, well, we started in Montague last week and had a ball there.
00:44It was fantastic.
00:45And tomorrow night we're in Morwell.
00:47And this week is really the big start of it.
00:50Right. And then, if that wasn't enough, you're going back to the scene of the crime.
00:54You know you hold a record there, don't you, at Capers?
00:57That's going to be on the 14th of May until Saturday the 24th of May.
01:01You and Paddy were at the fashion parade last week,
01:03and she was saying that she's never seen you look as beautiful,
01:06and I agree with her.
01:07That's very nice.
01:08But also, everyone says that this show that you're doing with the girls
01:11is one of your favourite things ever.
01:13Oh, yeah, it's wonderful. It's great fun.
01:15Is it because of the company?
01:17Yeah, the company and the fact that we all really enjoy being out there doing it.
01:21It's a fun show.
01:22I mean, I wrote it so I would have fun and so the audience would have fun
01:26because I'd been doing tragedy for so long.
01:29And also because I think the public sort of felt that that's what I did,
01:33that's all I did and that's what I was like.
01:35It's great to be able to show people that there is very much a fun
01:40and I have a good sense of humour and I do have a great life.
01:44It's not all about playing these dark, tragic roles.
01:47It's very healthy.
01:49Actually, that's a great outlook because most people following you through your career,
01:55I mean, they would love what you've done on television, on stage and in movies too.
02:00But all of a sudden I realised until you started Girls, Girls, Girls,
02:04people, the general public, didn't have too much opportunity
02:07of seeing your great sense of humour because you're a girl with a great sense of fun.
02:11Yeah, well, I do and I have a lot of fun and we all have a lot of fun
02:14and Wendy and Nicky and the three of us on stage, we have a ball.
02:17I looked as I was paying attention but when that opening was coming through,
02:20which one of the girls did you say is a total bitch?
02:24Now, actually, obviously, the three of you have just sunk in, haven't you?
02:28Yeah, that's fantastic.
02:30It's great for all of us. We all get to express ourselves.
02:33We all get to be individuals on stage.
02:35Even though we work very much, I mean, a lot of the night it's very much a trio show.
02:40We sing individually but it is very much a trio show.
02:42But we get to express ourselves and get to show off each other's different talents
02:47and that's been really good for all of us.
02:49There is something about working with someone that, for a start, you're comfortable with
02:55but also you find, I don't know whether it's a safety net or perhaps that's wrong.
02:59I think it is. It takes some of that pressure off you too.
03:01Yeah, I know working in doubles as I did with Graham and Don,
03:05the feeling always was terrific.
03:07If I got some strife, they'd rescue me and vice versa.
03:11And it's a lovely feeling, isn't it?
03:13It is. It's fantastic.
03:16We're so proud because every night, and I'm not exaggerating,
03:19every night we get a standing ovation.
03:21And it's so exciting.
03:23I mean, I did some great shows.
03:25I did some great shows in theatre and I had some amazing times in theatre
03:28but not every night did you get a standing ovation.
03:30In fact, it was really hard slog sometimes to get them to motivate them.
03:34I don't think that you get usually.
03:36Yes, you do.
03:37But then it sort of filters down.
03:38It sort of becomes very, very av after a while and people sort of, you know,
03:41they love it, they love it but you don't get that immediate response.
03:44And by the end of the night, our last song is Day By Day,
03:48which, you know, is such an uplifting song anyway.
03:50And they're jumping out of their seat at the end of the night
03:53and that makes us so happy.
03:55We get so much reward from that.
03:58In cabaret particularly too, doesn't it?
04:00I did Twin Towns about three or four years ago
04:02and at the end to see them standing trying to get out, it was...
04:06Is that what they're doing?
04:08It's a lovely feeling.
04:09Not in your case.
04:10Deb is here, we'll be talking more with her
04:12and the girls are going to sing for us this morning too.
04:15Also our very maid in charge of the music, John Foreman.
04:19Deborah there, the vision there was very exciting.
04:21I think.
04:22It's a new thing, we wanted to get instant viewer reaction
04:24to find out what they thought of the opening gag
04:26and they are united in their response.
04:28It's disgusting, it's wrong, it's rude.
04:30Yes, it's terrible.
04:32And John didn't even know I was going to do that.
04:34Please thank John and welcome Deb Lavergne.
04:39My first official question to you this morning is
04:42what the hell did you and Patty talk about for a half an hour?
04:46I was trying to get her on the mobile
04:48and there was no appearance, Your Worship,
04:50so I was just having a chat with Deborah.
04:52About a half an hour.
04:53We had a lovely chat.
04:54We chatted about you.
04:55Did you?
04:56Talked about you a lot, yeah.
04:57Anything from Patty that I need to know that I don't know already?
05:00Probably not.
05:01Is that right?
05:02Probably not.
05:03And what about you and Sed?
05:04We talked about Sed, Sed and I.
05:05We talked about, I'd like to send a cheerio to my sister Linda.
05:07Sure.
05:08We talked about Lou and we talked about Lucille, of course.
05:12Yes.
05:13The baby.
05:14And we just talked about what mums talk about.
05:15We talked about your lovely kids, Laura and Matt,
05:17and how they're going, what they're doing.
05:19And I met the boyfriend.
05:20Ah, yes, yes.
05:21Yeah, it was just, it's nice.
05:23Pardon me, is that Matthew's boyfriend or?
05:25No, Patty's.
05:26Oh, Patty's boyfriend.
05:27You mean Matt, don't you?
05:28Lauren's boyfriend, yes.
05:30That's right.
05:31Yes.
05:32You approve?
05:33Yeah, he's lovely, isn't he nice?
05:34He's really nice guy.
05:35He's a lovely bloke.
05:36Very, very healthy looking fellow too.
05:38How old is Lulu now, Lucille?
05:40We haven't shot a performance.
05:41Lucille's two and a half.
05:42Oh, there she is.
05:43Look at that.
05:44That's December last year, December the 8th last year.
05:47You already have, you now have three beautiful daughters.
05:50I know.
05:51But this one, I suppose, being the youngest and sort of,
05:53probably came at a time when you didn't expect to have another child.
05:56Yeah, yeah.
05:57It's a very special feeling.
05:58Oh, it's wonderful, it's absolutely wonderful.
06:00She's a joy for all of us, she really is.
06:02And Seth's still going well?
06:03Oh, yeah, he's going well.
06:04He's fantastic.
06:05He doesn't play in the show, does he?
06:07No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
06:09No?
06:10What do you say?
06:11Because I've always thought he'd be very beautiful in drag.
06:13Yeah, well, I don't mean, what I mean is playing the thing.
06:16No, no, no, no.
06:17Why are you laughing?
06:18You love him, but he's a shithouse musician.
06:20Well, he's gorgeous.
06:21He's doing his own thing.
06:22No, he is, he's very well and he's looking absolutely beautiful.
06:26Well, he's a very handsome man and you make very handsome babies.
06:30He did a big surprise for me the other night.
06:32It's my birthday.
06:33Came home?
06:34No.
06:35What did he do?
06:36What did he do?
06:37When was your birthday?
06:39Are you OK?
06:41It's this weekend.
06:43My birthday's this weekend, but he knew I wasn't going to be in Melbourne.
06:46So last week, on Sunday, he said,
06:50Oh, you've got to come somewhere and do this, you know,
06:53and we're having a photo taken by a friend.
06:55And I got there and everybody was there and they all said happy birthday.
06:58Ah, a surprise.
06:59So all his French mates were there and they gave me the St Kilda birthday party.
07:03Oh, isn't that lovely?
07:04And then I'll have my real birthday, you know, this weekend.
07:06On Saturday or?
07:07On Sunday.
07:08On Sunday.
07:09Oh, that's wonderful.
07:10Just pardon me one second.
07:11Oh, yeah, the bottle of champagne.
07:13We didn't realise it was your birthday, so there'll be a nice surprise.
07:17We're having a lovely time.
07:18Surprise, bottle of champagne, surprise for all of us.
07:21You know, you mentioned before about people having the opportunity.
07:25You know, I could work with you all day.
07:27Sometimes we do.
07:28Sometimes we do.
07:29Well, that's right.
07:30It's all or nothing.
07:31You mentioned before about, you know, the first opportunity of people showing the,
07:34or seeing the fun side of you.
07:36But, you know, really when, no gags here, when you look back on your career,
07:41you wouldn't have too many regrets, would you?
07:43Because you've come through so much in terms of being a child star,
07:47the biggest of the time, and then right through to all the grades
07:51and all the, seemingly, all the areas of music, musical comedy,
07:56pop records, movies, television, you know?
07:59I think this show, Girls, Girls, Girls, is a perfect timing
08:03because I get to do and put in all the experiences that I've had go in this show.
08:09And it feels very solid, the show.
08:12And I think that is because of the different TV, theatre, film,
08:18you know, all the different ways that I've worked have come in, you know,
08:22and all the different wonderful people that I've learnt from.
08:25I've used their tricks and used the things that I've learnt
08:28from doing all these different shows, and it's come at a really good time.
08:31That's intriguing to hear that because I believe with a top performer,
08:34you know, someone who's really got the talent and stays around for a fair while,
08:39they don't realise, and probably the people around them don't realise,
08:42but they are heading for something which they wouldn't have planned earlier on.
08:46And that's like Girls, Girls, Girls.
08:48Yes, it is.
08:49Because if you were just starting out now, you wouldn't do a show like that.
08:52No, no, no.
08:53I would actually probably think, oh, it's not cool.
08:55You know, I've got to do something, you know, really dramatic and serious
08:58and, you know, very theatrical.
09:00But, you know, Girls, Girls, Girls has all that stuff in it.
09:03It's just done in a very, very high energy and a very fun way.
09:06And there's drama, but it's not the same drama that people, I guess,
09:11are used to seeing me do.
09:13Well, let me just show the dates again.
09:14I've just had a word from the green room.
09:16They're trying to sober up Wendy.
09:17As soon as she's right, we'll go ahead with the three girls.
09:21There you go.
09:22Very busy at all of those Tats venues.
09:25Your chance to see three wonderful performers making it as one.
09:30And as I mentioned to you before,
09:32Deborah and the girls do hold the record at Capers,
09:36and they have so many artists who play there.
09:38But Paul will verify, Paul who looks after Capers,
09:41will verify that you've got to book early for this particular show.
09:45We've actually got the phone number to put up
09:47because I don't want the fans of the girls to miss out.
09:50You can book right now, even though it doesn't start until May the 14th,
09:54to Saturday the 24th of May.
09:56But book now and you can get in and see these wonderful, wonderful girls.
10:00Especially you.
10:01Oh, but not especially you.
10:02Are the other girls watching it in the green room?
10:04Yeah, well, maybe.
10:05All three beautiful girls will be there.
10:07And we'll look forward to the song too?
10:09Yes, thanks.
10:10OK. Great to see you again.
10:11Give us a kiss.
10:12APPLAUSE
10:15Deborah, careful with the hair.
10:17Not mine, yours.
10:19Right after the break,
10:20the very stylish Chica Keyboard is going to be with us.
