00:00I don't know how to love him, what to do, how to move him.
00:15Like a number of team members, Deborah Byrne had a difficult home life.
00:20When a child's being sexually abused, they feel like they're hiding a big secret, and
00:26they're very ashamed of that.
00:29What happens when they get older is that they're terrified of people exposing that.
00:35I love what I do, and I loved it from the moment I think I was born, that's what I was
00:40always going to do, and I don't think in any way has it ever harmed me.
00:47The harm was done long before anyone saw me on the TV.
00:52To us, she was Judy Garland, her parents, she had problems at home, she was pretty wild,
01:03she had a punk haircut before punk was in, and when we first saw her, we thought, wow,
01:11this pretty tough kid, and then she started to sing and started to dance, and we were
01:16just blown away with her, she was absolutely fantastic.
01:19The healing process was probably longer, because it was a lot of my growing and healing
01:25and whatever, exploring, was done very publicly, and I always felt very threatened of the exposure
01:34of who I thought I was, really, and I'm just a very bad, dirty little girl.
01:39So it's really not in the business that creates, for me, that created problems, the problems
01:46were already there.
01:47It just was harder to grow up and to sort these problems out, because it was being done
01:54so publicly.
01:56While still a member of the Young Talent team, Deborah was crowned TV Week's Queen of Pop,
02:08won the Logie for Best Teenage TV Personality two years in a row, had a number one hit single
02:14and a hit album.
02:15She went on to become a regular performer on a number of television shows for the ABC,
02:19including The Saturday Show, Follies, and Farnham & Byrne with John Farnham, and The
02:24Cliff Richards Show on the BBC in England.
02:27She starred alongside Matt Dillon in the feature film Rebel, and took the female lead in numerous
02:32major musicals, including Cats, Jerry's Girls, Les Miserables, and Sunset Boulevard.
