Struggling with his dual identity, failed comedian Arthur Fleck meets the love of his life, Harley Quinn, while incarcerated at Arkham State Hospital.

00:10In the beginning of the movie,
00:12a Looney Tunes-style cartoon called
00:15Me and My Shadow introduces Arthur Fleck,
00:19now known as Joker,
00:21enjoying his newfound fame.
00:24His shadow comes to life,
00:26trying to take over his identity
00:29before merging back with him.
00:31As Arthur prepares for a live performance,
00:35police officers arrive to violently beat him.
00:39After spending two years in Arkham Asylum
00:42for multiple murders,
00:44Arthur faces abuse from guards like Jackie Sullivan.
00:49His lawyer and social worker believe
00:51Joker is a split personality
00:54responsible for the crimes.
00:57Arthur gains followers including fellow inmate Lee,
01:01who shares his dark humor and attraction.
01:05During a therapy session,
01:07Arthur and Lee bond,
01:09with Lee setting a fire
01:11and the two attempting to escape Arkham together.
01:14However, they are caught
01:16and Arthur is thrown into solitary confinement,
01:20envisioning a dance with Lee on a rooftop
01:23as he laughs uncontrollably.
01:26Arthur wakes up to find Lee in his cell.
01:30She tells him that she is being sent home
01:33because her relationship with him.
01:36Lee says she will be at his trial every day
01:39and wait for him when he gets out.
01:42She puts Arthur's signature Joker makeup on him
01:46before they both have sex for the first time.
01:49The next day,
01:51Marian accompanies Arthur
01:53as he is set to do a televised interview
01:56with Patty Myers, Steve Coogan,
01:59where he hopes to get Joker to come out,
02:02while Marian insists that Arthur
02:04only be referred to by his own name.
02:07Patty prods Arthur with questions about the murders,
02:11while Arthur is adamant
02:13that they should be talking about
02:15how he is different now than he was before.
02:19Patty also brings up the news report
02:22about Arthur and Lee's romantic escape attempt.
02:26Arthur starts singing Bewitched,
02:29which everyone at Arkham watches.
02:32Lee watches on the streets
02:34with a crowd outside a TV store,
02:37and she breaks the glass
02:39and steals a small TV.
02:41Arthur's trial soon begins
02:43with hundreds of fans gathered to witness,
02:47including Lee standing outside the courthouse.
02:51Dr. Liu, Ken Leung,
02:53speaks on his beliefs
02:55that Arthur is faking his mental illness
02:58and committed the murders on his own accord,
03:01but he is still a highly disturbed individual
03:04with a traumatic past.
03:06Marian gives her argument defending Arthur's case.
03:11After the day is done,
03:13Lee tries to argue with Marian
03:16that they are keeping her as far from Arthur as possible.
03:20Marian approaches Arthur in his cell
03:23and tells him that all the stuff
03:25that Lee said about her past,
03:27that she's poor, her father's dead, etc.,
03:30is all a lie
03:32as she lives in the Upper West Side
03:34with both her parents
03:36and she got a degree in psychology.
03:39Marian warns Arthur
03:41that Lee is playing him for a fool,
03:43but he just has another musical fantasy
03:46about the two of them,
03:48which ends with Lee shooting Joker in the stomach.
03:52Lee visits Arthur at Arkham.
03:55He asks her if she really was lying to him
03:59and she just tries to turn Marian's words back on her
04:03as if she were the one trying to manipulate Arthur.
04:07Lee also tells Arthur that she is pregnant
04:11and he is elated.
04:13During the next day of the trial,
04:16a testimony is given by Sophie de Monde Zazie Beetz,
04:21Arthur's former neighbor that he was infatuated with.
04:25She recounts the creepy encounters that she had with him,
04:29as well as the harassment she received
04:32from Arthur's followers and press
04:35wanting to ask her about her involvement with him.
04:39Sophie also brings up
04:41how she used to talk to his mother Penny,
04:44recounting the things that she told Sophie
04:47about Arthur's failed aspirations as a comedian.
04:51Arthur envisions himself singing the Joker
04:55before attacking the jury
04:58and the judge in his fantasy
05:00before blowing his brains out.
05:02Arthur cuts off Sophie's testimony
05:05to fire Marian and represent himself,
05:09which his supporters cheer for.
05:12When he returns to Arkham,
05:14the inmates cheer and sing
05:16when the Saints go marching in,
05:19which pisses off the guards' Judge Rothwax,
05:22Bill Smitrovich,
05:24reluctantly allows Arthur to represent himself
05:28while in his Joker makeup and suit.
05:31The next testimony is given
05:33by Arthur's former co-worker at Ha Ha's,
05:37Gary Puddle's Lee Gill,
05:39who witnessed Arthur's horrific murder of Randall.
05:43The incident not only traumatized Gary so much
05:47that it affected his work and sleep,
05:50but he was also shocked
05:52because Arthur was the only person at work
05:55who was ever kind to him.
05:57Arthur gives an impassioned rant
05:59about how he is not letting his tormentors keep him down
06:03and that he feels free as Joker.
06:06Arthur returns to Arkham
06:08and is beaten and raped by Jackie
06:10and two other guards
06:12since he insulted them during his rant.
06:15After being dragged back to his cell,
06:18a young inmate, Ricky Meline, Jacob Laughland,
06:22who has been one of Arthur's biggest supporters,
06:26starts singing for Arthur.
06:28Jackie goes to his cell and strangles Ricky to death,
06:33which Arthur overhears.
06:35During the closing statements part of the trial,
06:39Arthur eventually admits to everyone
06:42that he no longer wants to be Joker,
06:45admitting he is just sad and tired of life.
06:49He also confesses to killing his mother by smothering her.
06:54Lee and various other followers
06:57quickly turn on Arthur
06:59and leave the courthouse in disgust.
07:02Arthur later leaves a voice message for Lee
07:06where he sings to her one last time.
07:09The verdict is reached
07:11and Arthur is deemed guilty on all counts of murder.
07:16He begins laughing maniacally
07:19and a family member of one of the victims
07:22tries to attack Arthur, causing a frenzy.
07:26A car bomb goes off,
07:29blowing a huge hole in the courthouse
07:32and burning half of Den's face.
07:35Arthur starts to run out
07:37and is picked up by two Joker followers
07:40trying to sneak him away.
07:42Arthur ends up running out of the car
07:45and flees into the streets.
07:48He goes up the steps of his old apartment
07:51and finds Lee there.
07:53He tries to restart their romance,
07:56but she tells him they are done
07:58since she was only ever in love with the fantasy of Joker.
08:03She sings to him and leaves him alone
08:06before he is arrested.
08:08Arthur returns to Arkham
08:10and is told by Jackie that he has a visitor.
08:14As he follows him,
08:16an inmate, Connor Story,
08:19that has been following Arthur's Joker persona
08:22approaches him to tell a joke.
08:25When he gets to the punchline, he says,
08:28You get what you fucking deserve.
08:31The same thing Arthur said to Murray before killing him.
08:36The inmate repeatedly stabs Arthur in the gut.
08:41He sees himself in one last musical number with Lee
08:45as he bleeds out and dies.
08:48Meanwhile, the inmate carves a Glasgow grin
08:52into his own face.
