00:00RABBIT GARDEN, by Georgia Tufts.
00:14To Pearl.
00:15Once there was a grandfather named George who had a lovely garden with flowers and vegetables
00:19and no weeds.
00:20He had a granddaughter named Nora who came to visit every summer.
00:24Early one morning, when George went out to inspect his garden, he discovered that someone
00:29had nibbled the tops of his lettuce.
00:31Rabbits, said George.
00:33I'll have to get rid of them.
00:35And that day George and Nora built a fence around the garden to keep out the rabbits.
00:39But that night, when Nora and George were asleep, the rabbits hopped right over the
00:43fence and ate more lettuce and even some carrot tops.
00:47The next morning George was angry.
00:49I'll have to build a higher fence to keep out the rabbits, he said.
00:53But late that night when everyone was sleeping, those rabbits leaped over the fence and gobbled
00:58up more lettuce and carrots and even some radish tops.
01:01The next morning George was furious.
01:03I'll build a huge high fence to keep those bad rabbits out of my garden.
01:08And George and Nora built a huge high fence around the garden.
01:11But late that night so late that even the owls were asleep.
01:15Those bad rabbits crawled under the fence and munched on lettuce, carrots, radishes
01:19and even some bean blossoms and cabbage sprouts.
01:21Oh what can I do? said George the next morning and sat down heavily in his garden chair.
01:27How can I keep those rabbits from eating up my garden?
01:30Then Nora had a very good idea.
01:32Why not make a rabbit garden just for rabbits and plant all the things that rabbits like
01:36best in it?
01:38Then they'll eat their garden and not yours.
01:40George was very excited about Nora's plan.
01:43He especially liked the part about the rabbits not eating his garden.
01:46So George and Nora got busy and hoed and rake a plot of ground for the garden.
01:51Then Nora planted lettuce carrot radish bean and cabbage seeds.
01:55George made a sign which said in big letters.
01:58The rabbit garden.
01:59All rabbits welcome.
02:00On one side of the garden they built a little fence for the rabbits who like to jump over
02:04fences into gardens.
02:06On the opposite side they built a huge high fence for the rabbits who like to crawl under
02:10fences into gardens.
02:12They left the other two sides open for all the old rabbits and all the baby rabbits who
02:17just wanted to hop slowly into gardens.
02:20So every night after that the rabbits came to their very own garden.
02:23And do you know why they always came at night?
02:26For what a rabbit loves best is to sneak into a garden at night when everyone else is elseep
02:30and nibble on lettuce leaves in the moonlight.
