00:00From goth to rainbow, via the grisliest crimes the U.S. Navy has ever faced, who else but
00:06NCIS's Abby Schudo?
00:08Abby Schudo's style, as seen on NCIS from Season 1 to Season 15, often seems to clash
00:14with her chipper personality, but this forensic scientist is ultimately a goth at heart.
00:19After all, Abby loves not just death, but the supernatural, tattoos, and black clothes
00:24and jewelry, too.
00:26Maybe that's why Abby became a fan favorite in short order.
00:29That's certainly what the minds behind the character were aiming for.
00:33Part of executive producer Donald Belisario's intent with Abby was to create a positive
00:38depiction of a person with tattoos and piercings.
00:41Perrette told CBS,
00:43"...I think after all these years, an older generation might look at someone with tattoos
00:48and instead of thinking they're a thug, they maybe think they're a scientist."
00:52She also discussed how many girls followed in her character's footsteps, taking up math
00:56and science courses in college, because Abby made these topics fun.
01:00Outside of work, Abby is a competent, plucky, and kind-hearted human being, and part of
01:06her now-iconic ensemble is her striking black hair, which she typically fashions into pigtails
01:11with bangs.
01:12Interestingly, though, that hair color isn't the shade that actor Pauly Perrette was born
01:18with.
01:19Over the years, Pauly Perrette's jet-black locks may have become one of the trademarks
01:22of Abby's shooto on NCIS, but the actor's hair is actually blonde.
01:27To pull off her look as Abby, Perrette regularly dyed it black with the help of hair and makeup
01:32assistants, who also gave her a hand applying Abby's neck tattoo before filming began each
01:38day.
01:39She once told CBS Sunday Morning that, while working on the series, she actually ended
01:43up with dyed roots.
01:45Furthermore, the actor tweeted in 2013,
01:48However, Perrette revealed on The Queen Latifah Show that this had actually led to some health
02:00complications.
02:01She developed a PPD allergy, a condition that can happen when you've been dyeing your hair
02:06black for a long time.
02:08During filming on NCIS, she woke up with her head swelling and had to be rushed to the
02:12hospital.
02:13By the time I got to the hospital, it's like half my head was this big, and the other half
02:16was like this big, and my eyes were swollen shut, and I'm like, people need to see this."
02:20Afterward, the actor only used black hairspray, right up until she left NCIS during its 15th
02:26season.
02:27Evidently, dyeing her hair black wasn't the best move for Pauly Perrette.
02:31But that's not to say that dyeing her hair other colors is out of the question.
02:35With NCIS and Abby's shooto behind her, she made the bold choice in 2021 to try out a
02:41brand new look.
02:42Instead of choosing just one hair color, though, she chose multiple, revealing a vibrant rainbow
02:47hairstyle in November of that year.
02:50In a Twitter post that showed off her new, colorful appearance for the world to see,
02:54Perrette wrote,
02:55"'I'm a rainbow.'"
02:56In the time since debuting this bright hairdo, she seems to have kept up with it, as her
03:00hair has remained that way in a number of subsequent social media posts.
03:04With that, it doesn't look like she has any intention of returning to life as Abby on
03:09NCIS anytime soon.
03:11And between her serious PPD allergy and the tricky nature of the fame that came with the
03:16show, who could blame her?
03:18Yes, it seems that Pauly Perrette is doing just fine away from NCIS and the Abby shooto
03:23role.
03:24Maybe someday she'll give both of them another go.
03:26But for the time being, she seems to be enjoying the freedom to do whatever she'd like, including
03:31with her hair.
