00:00Hi, this is the EI sound, as in the words they, make and great.
00:16EI is a diphthong sound which means it is a combination of two vowel sounds that are
00:22pronounced within the same syllable.
00:25The EI sound is a combination of the EH sound and the IH sound, EI.
00:36Like vowels the diphthongs are all made through the mouth and they are voiced, which means
00:41that you vibrate your vocal cords to make the sound.
00:45Unlike with vowels and consonants, when you pronounce a diphthong your mouth will change
00:51position and shape as you say the sound.
00:55This is because they are a combination of two vowel sounds, like I said.
00:59So as you say EI your mouth will start on the position of the EH and finish on the position
01:08of the IH or EI sound.
01:11In this case both sounds are what we call unrounded so we keep our lips stretched out
01:18like we are smiling, but our mouth will close a little as we move to the IH sound.

01:34One of the most difficult things about learning English is the spelling, and this is because
01:39spelling is often not phonetic, especially with the vowels and diphthong sounds.
01:46So you will find the EI sound spelled in many different ways, but it is often spelled
01:53with the letter A, as in the words take, way, same and case.
02:07Here are some words that start with the EI sound.
02:13Able
02:16Age
02:18Eight
02:20Agent
02:26Here are some words with the A sound in the middle.
02:31Game
02:33State
02:36Later
02:39Change
02:43And here are some words with the A sound at the end.
02:48Day
02:50Play
02:52Away
02:54Stay
02:58So that's it for the A sound.
