00:002,400 jobs have been saved but more than 1,000 workers will be made redundant after TGI Friday
00:07secured a rescue deal. The US-themed chain went into administration last month, but Brealt
00:11Capital and Calverton UK have stepped in to buy the business. They already own chains
00:16Byron Burgers, Vinoteca and Restaurant Group at D&D London. A spokesperson for the new
00:21owners said it wanted to both modernise the business and capitalise on the heritage of
00:25this iconic brand.
00:27But it's not all good news for those who work for the chain. While 2,400 staff members
00:32working at 51 of the UK branches will be kept on, around 1,000 will be let go as 35 of the
00:37restaurants have been shut down for good. These include Birmingham Hagley Road, Bristol
00:41Cabot Circus, Cardiff Newport Road, Durham, Halifax, Leeds and Newcastle Eldon Square,
00:47the former of which was TGI Friday's first ever UK branch. TGI Friday's UK CEO Julie
00:53McEwen said they were doing everything possible to retain the team and support those impacted.
00:57She added she was devastated for our colleagues who will be leaving TGIs and thanked them
01:01for their loyalty and contribution during their time with us.
