In Burkina Faso, after the rainy season, farming activities decline considerably due to the scarcity of water during the dry season. This is a serious problem for many farmers.

Marcellin DRABO, through his company "Africa Energy Solaire", has developed a solar pumping system using submersible pumps. This pump is mainly intended for small-scale farmers on low incomes. It will enable them to easily irrigate their fields while saving water.

By 2025, Marcellin DRABO aims to reach more than 1,000 small-scale, low-income farmers with his solar pumping system.

00:00To be able to boost production at the level of the producers,
00:05we will have to put in place less tools to save water,
00:10so that we can irrigate the fields at a really affordable cost for these producers.
00:18I am a training manager with a Bac 3.
00:30I have been working with the solar system since 2009,
00:34with solar energy certification.
00:36A training with Lorenz, which was done in the solar pump.
00:40We are in the framework of activities to provide renewable energy
00:46from the photovoltaic panels.
00:50We are in Burkina Faso, a Sahelian country,
00:53where the primitive life is very limited.
00:55There is a very short winter season,
00:59for three months, after which agricultural activities are stopped.
01:02But today, the farmers, who are our customers,
01:07lose the richness of the water.
01:09The subsurface or reservoirs of water that are used,
01:12but the system that is used is very classic,
01:15which are the thermal engines,
01:17which require a lot of resources in terms of financial and productive,
01:21whose profitability was not so adequate.
01:24Of course, we have composed of a solar pump,
01:27photovoltaic panels and irrigation kits.
01:31The equipment we have chosen are really well-known brands,
01:35with a 20-year durability for the pumps,
01:38as well as the panels.
01:46The main advantages are huge.
01:49When we talk about solar, there is already environmental protection.
01:53If you take advantage of the sun, which is almost free,
01:56and which is available throughout the year,
01:59also the working time is much reduced,
02:02there is no effort to be made.
02:04You just have to open the valves,
02:06so it reduces the working time.
02:08I think the system is no longer to be demonstrated,
02:10it is adopted within small producers,
02:13who know that there is a considerable advantage to take advantage of.
02:17Once it was installed, I found that it was very good.
02:22It favored me a lot.
02:24Presently, you see, we are irrigating.
02:27This system is irrigated with the sun.
02:31This is already good,
02:32because by calculating the supervision,
02:35we irrigate with the solar panels.
02:38Even if it is 500 francs per day,
02:43by calculating, at least we find something.
02:46That's why it's one and two.
02:48Instead of having at least two workers,
02:50or one worker,
02:52you just press, and then it irrigates.
02:54We work financially because I don't put any fuel,
02:57but it will irrigate.
02:59For the implementation of our solar pumping project
03:04with an irrigation system,
03:07by 2025,
03:10we will reach at least 1,000 producers,
03:13especially small producers, to make a profit.
