Storms rolling in over parts of NSW and Queensland
Severe thunderstorms for north-east NSW and south-east Queensland.

00:00Severe thunderstorms will impact parts of northeast NSW and southeast QLD over the next few days.
00:06Let's jump in by taking a look at today's thunderstorm forecast.
00:10Now, storms won't be as widespread today as they're likely to be on Tuesday and Wednesday,
00:15but we are still seeing storms possible through central and southeastern parts of QLD,
00:19as indicated by this green contour you see here.
00:22Severe storms are possible across some southeastern coastal parts,
00:26mainly to the north of Brisbane and up towards Gympie.
00:30In that severe thunderstorm area, we may see some damaging wind gusts with thunderstorms
00:34this afternoon and evening. Heavy rainfall and large hail are possible,
00:38but less likely than those damaging winds.
00:41Going into tomorrow, though, and taking a look at our thunderstorm forecast for Tuesday,
00:45we can see that the possible storm area, the green area, is more widespread through parts
00:51of southeastern QLD and northeastern NSW, stretching all the way down to parts of the Hunter.
00:57But really, it's the yellow and red areas we need to focus on.
01:00Those indicate areas of possible severe thunderstorms,
01:04with the red showing where severe storms are likely through tomorrow afternoon and evening.
01:09Now, we can see that those severe storm areas extend all the way across the mid-north coast
01:14and northern rivers of NSW, pushing up into the southeast of QLD as well.
01:19Brisbane and the Gold Coast may escape the most severe storms tomorrow,
01:23but we are likely to see that risk a little further inland.
01:27Large hail and damaging winds are most likely with severe storms tomorrow.
01:31We may see some short, sharp downbursts of rain, particularly on the Queensland
01:36side of the border later in the afternoon and evening, but wind and hail are the main risks.
01:42Damaging winds could bring down trees or tree limbs, creating dangerous driving conditions.
01:47Large hail and heavy rain can also reduce visibility on the roads,
01:51making things dangerous on top of that.
01:53We may also see some minor damage to cars or property with that hail
01:57and wind risk over the next couple of days.
02:00So what is causing all of this thunderstorm activity that we're expecting?
02:05Taking a look at our weather situation from tonight,
02:08we can see a trough moving up the southern and central coasts of NSW.
02:13That system is expected to sweep through those northern coastal areas
02:17of NSW during Tuesday afternoon and evening,
02:20triggering these areas of showers and thunderstorms through northeast NSW
02:25and southeast Queensland. Storms will be most likely ahead of
02:28and along that trough line as this stronger southerly pushes through.
02:33As we go into Wednesday though, we're not going to see the end of it,
02:37even though the trough starts to move away.
02:39Showers and storms will continue in those same areas,
02:42becoming more widespread across parts of central and southeast Queensland in particular.
02:47Now, showers and storms are not likely to be severe through all of these areas.
02:52The severe thunderstorm area on Wednesday is more likely to be
02:55across southeast inland parts of Queensland,
02:59with damaging winds, large hail and heavy rain once again a risk.
03:03As we go through into Thursday, the risk of storms is going to back off
03:07a little bit more significantly, leaving us mostly with coastal showers
03:11along the southern Queensland and northern NSW areas.
03:15Now, this situation is continuing to unfold at the moment
03:19with ongoing assessment of that thunderstorm situation.
