00:20And through the course of my career,
00:22I've been told, at one point, you're too young.

00:29Oh, they're not ready for you.
00:32Oh, and this is the one that kills me.
00:34Oh, it's gonna be a lot of hard work, right?
00:36As though we don't like hard work.

00:52Kamala Harris is the latest guest for Call Her Daddy.
00:56Ahead of the 2024 presidential election,
00:58which is less than a month away,
01:00the vice president sat down with Alex Cooper
01:02for the October 6th episode
01:03of her popular podcast, Call Her Daddy.
01:06The two women discussed a variety of topics,
01:08from reproductive rights in the United States
01:10to the Democratic nominee's late mother's influence
01:12to her former career as a prosecutor,
01:15as well as her reactions to personal attacks
01:17by her opponent where her identity and character
01:18have been called into question.
01:20Before the interview began, Alex addressed her listeners,
01:23acknowledging that she knows their political views are mixed
01:26but said she felt that she had to engage
01:28in the important dialogue.
01:29She then added that she invited former President Trump
01:32to come on the show to also have a meaningful conversation
01:34about women's rights.
01:37I will be honest.
01:39I had been going back and forth with this decision
01:41for a while to get involved or to not get involved.
01:49But at the end of the day, I couldn't see a world
01:52in which one of the main conversations
01:54in this election is women and I'm not a part of it.
02:01I am so aware I have a very mixed audience
02:04when it comes to politics.
02:05So please hear me when I say my goal today
02:10is not to change your political affiliation.
02:13What I'm hoping is that you're able to listen
02:17to a conversation that isn't too different
02:21than the ones that we're having here every week.
02:23I wanna be so clear,
02:25since this isn't a one-sided conversation,
02:27we reached out to former President Donald Trump
02:30to come on the show.
02:31If he also wants to have a meaningful in-depth conversation
02:34about women's rights in this country,
02:36then he is welcome on Call Her Daddy anytime.
02:39The episode kicked off with Alex asking the Vice President
02:42about her late mother and what values she instilled in her.
02:45Well, you know, similar to what you described
02:47about your mother, my mother definitely impressed upon us
02:52the importance of us being able
02:54to express how we were feeling.
02:57And a lot of it I think was also about her teaching us
03:01that we had agency
03:05and so that things don't just happen to you.
03:08And so think about how you were feeling,
03:11not just as a way to dump,
03:13but also as a way to kind of figure out
03:17where you are in a moment, right?
03:18And center yourself.
03:20I mean, to your point, when I got older,
03:22I don't know, late teens, my 20s,
03:25if I came home with a problem,
03:27I'm telling you, every time I came,
03:29if I came home with a problem,
03:30the first thing my mother would do is she was look at me
03:33like other mothers I believe were hugging their kids
03:35and like, oh, honey, what can I do?
03:37And my mother, the first thing, what did you do?
03:42But here's the thing that I realized.
03:45She was actually teaching me,
03:49think about where you had agency in that moment
03:54and think about what you had the choice to do or not do
03:58and like, don't let things just happen to you.
04:02And I realized that was a really powerful thing
04:05she was teaching, which is figure out
04:07how you can take charge of a moment.
04:10You can't always, we don't have control
04:11of everything obviously,
04:12but don't just let things happen to you
04:16without thinking about, okay, what can I do in this moment?
04:19The podcast host later brought up personal attacks
04:22made by Trump, asking Harris how she feels about them.
04:25Your identity has been called into question many times.
04:29Your opponent has called you crazy, weak, fake, and dumb.
04:34How does that affect you?
04:36I think it's really important
04:37not to let other people define you.
04:40And usually those people who will attempt to do it
04:42don't know you.
04:43The two women also spoke at length
04:45about abortion access in the country at this moment.
04:48The majority of women who receive abortion care are mothers.
04:52So if she's in a state, and by the way,
04:54every state in the South except for Virginia
05:00has an abortion ban, okay?
05:04So imagine she's in a state with an abortion ban,
05:07one out of three women are, by the way, in our country,
05:10and she's a mom.
05:12So she's gonna have to figure out,
05:15one, God help her if she has affordable childcare.
05:20God help her if she has paid leave.
05:23And then she's gonna have to go to the airport,
05:28stand in a TSA line,
05:32sit on a plane next to a perfect stranger,
05:35to go to a city where she's never been,
05:38to receive the care she needs.
05:41She's gonna probably have to get right back on that plane
05:44because she's got those kids.
05:46Her best friend's probably not with her
05:48because that's who's taking care of the kids.
05:52To get back in that TSA line,
05:54to get back on a plane, to go home.
05:57And that's all if they can even afford the plane ticket.
06:01Exactly.
06:02Or the bus ticket.
06:02Exactly.
06:04Harris also revealed that she was the first vice president
06:07to ever in office go to a reproductive healthcare clinic.

06:22Yes, yes, yes.
06:24I didn't know that, but I guess that makes sense.
06:26To your point.
06:28And yet the men are making the decisions about our bodies.
06:30And here's the other thing about this point,
06:31that it's about IVF treatments and access.
06:35It's about access to contraception,
06:36which is very much at risk with these folks.
06:40It is about, back to the point
06:42about reproductive health clinics.
06:43You know what those clinics also do?
06:45They do PAPs.
06:47They do breast cancer screenings.
06:49They do HIV testing.
06:51And they're having to close in many places with these bans.
06:56So think about the fact that for anyone
06:58who has gone to one of these clinics,
06:59you understand that it is sometimes the most trusted place
07:04where people receive that kind of healthcare
07:07because they walk into those places
07:09that are generally staffed by people
07:11who create a safe place for people
07:14to come in without judgment.
07:17Though Vice President Harris has two stepchildren,
07:19who she refers to as her children,
07:21Alex asked the Democratic nominee
07:23about criticisms from other politicians
07:25regarding that aspect of her life.
07:27There has been a very big fixation
07:30on biological children, stepchildren,
07:35women that have children
07:36versus women that don't have children.
07:37It's like a huge point somehow
07:39of this entire election, right?
07:42I saw the governor of Arkansas said,
07:45my kids keep me humble.
07:47Unfortunately, Kamala Harris doesn't have anything
07:50keeping her humble.
07:52How did that make you feel?
07:54I don't think she understands
07:56that there are a whole lot of women out here
08:01who one, are not aspiring to be humble.
08:04Two, a whole lot of women out here
08:09who have a lot of love in their life,
08:13family in their life, and children in their life.
08:16And I think it's really important
08:18for women to lift each other up.
08:22You know, I'll tell you, Alex,
08:23one of the things that I have really enjoyed
08:26about where the discussion has gone,
08:29one of the places it's gone,
08:30we have our family by blood
08:32and then we have our family by love.
08:35And I have both.
08:37And I consider it to be a real blessing.
08:40And I have two beautiful children, Cole and Ella,
08:45who call me mama-la.
08:47We have a very modern family.
08:50My husband's ex-wife is a friend of mine.
08:53Alex then asked the VP about J.D. Vance's
08:56viral childless cat lady remark
08:58from a 2021 interview he did,
09:00which Taylor Swift notably used
09:02when she signed off in her endorsement post for Harris.
09:05I know that we all saw, obviously,
09:06Taylor Swift's sign out on her Instagram.
09:09And I wanted to address Donald Trump's VP pick,
09:14J.D. Vance, called women who don't have kids
09:16childless cat ladies.
09:18What message do you think this sends to women
09:22who cannot conceive or just don't want kids?
09:27I just think it's mean and mean-spirited.
09:31And I think that most Americans want leaders
09:35who understand that the measure of their strength
09:37is not based on who you beat down.
09:40The real measure of the strength of a leader
09:41is based on who you lift up.
09:43At the end of the interview,
09:44Alex asked Vice President Harris
09:46why people should trust her.
09:47You can look at my career to know what I care about.
09:51I care about making sure that people are entitled to
09:56and receive the freedoms that they are due.
09:59I care about lifting people up
10:01and making sure that you are protected from harm.
10:05I care about tapping into the ambitions
10:08and the aspirations of people,
10:10knowing that we are capable of so much,
10:12but you can't grow the strength of our country
10:16if you underestimate the capacity of each person, right?
10:21Which is why another thing that I'm really focused on
10:23is small businesses and startups
10:26and giving startups a $50,000 tax deduction
10:29because right now it's $5,000
10:31and you can't start up anything,
10:32any small business with $5,000.
10:35But the bottom line is this.
10:38I believe in the promise of America.
10:42I have not been able to be the first
10:44in every position that I've had
10:47were it not for the promise of America.
10:50I believe in our country.
10:51I love our country.
10:53And I believe that leadership
10:55has to be about knowing our capacity
10:58and then investing in the people
11:00because lifting up each person that we do
11:04is about lifting up the whole.
