00:00A sound that people seem to like a lot is the A sound. In IPA, the International Phonetic Alphabet, we use the Ash symbol to represent this sound.
00:15This symbol is used in a lot of other languages and alphabets, but please remember that in these videos I'm using it within the IPA, the International Phonetic Alphabet.
00:28So don't be commenting that I'm saying it wrong because I'm saying it differently to how it's used in other languages. This is how it's used in IPA.
00:39I have made another video all about the Ash symbol and how it's used in lots of different languages, so you might want to check that out.
00:51The most common words with the A sound are
00:57and
00:59have
01:01can
01:03man
01:05cat
01:07hat
01:09back

01:15Remember that pronunciation is physical and if you are making mistakes with this sound, you need to think about what you are doing physically.
01:25It's technically called the Near Open Front Unrounded Vowel because your mouth should be open quite wide and your lips are unrounded as we say the sound.
01:46We can see this on the phonetic chart because it's on the bottom row of the vowel section which means that the mouth is open.
01:55As we say the sounds in that column from top to bottom you can see how the mouth gets more and more open.
02:06And it's on the left column because the lips are unrounded.
02:13We can see the lips get more rounded as we go from left to right.
02:23To practice the A sound I prepared a text for you that uses this sound a lot in a variety of words.
02:31I'll read it out for you then you can rewind and read it with me.
