00:00Ryan Murphy is addressing the recent news surrounding the Menendez brothers' case.
00:06Murphy released the series Monsters, the Lyle and Eric Menendez story on Netflix just two weeks ago.
00:11Then, on Thursday, the Los Angeles County District Attorney announced that the case was under review
00:16for possible re-sentencing, a result of the accusations of abuse levied by the Menendez
00:21brothers against their late parents. These accusations were ignored in the trial,
00:25leading to their convictions, but bolstered by its depiction in Murphy's Netflix drama.
00:29Plus, criminal justice reform advocate Kim Kardashian wrote an essay calling for the
00:33Menendez brothers' release, after visiting the California prison where they are currently
00:37serving life sentences without the possibility of parole.
00:41In response to the news of the case being re-examined, Murphy told The Hollywood Reporter,
00:45I'd heard about the amount of people who've watched the show and have been
00:48bombarding the governor's office and the DA's office. The show has shined a white-hot
00:52spotlight on this case. A lot of people have been outraged about it."
00:56The Menendez family has condemned the series, calling it, quote,
00:59a grotesque shock drama. When asked if he thinks the family watched the entire show,
01:03Murphy said, No, no, no. I don't think you would release a statement like that
01:08after you watched episode 5. Episode 5 is basically a multi-million dollar infomercial
01:13for the case to be re-examined, which is now happening. He continued, I never understood it.
01:18As I've said, this show is the best thing that's happened to those brothers in 30 years,
01:23because it just put a spotlight on their case. You can say it wasn't the true story,
01:27and I think a lot of it was the true story, but we'll never know the true story.
