00:00Lyle wrote me this emotional letter

00:03when I was in the county jail.

00:06Lyle couldn't express what he did in that letter in person.

00:14It was easier for him to put it on paper.

00:19He felt that telling the sick secrets of the family

00:25would be like killing my parents again.

00:29And he did not want to do it.

00:41Ultimately, it became clear,

00:43particularly after they found that jail letter,

00:45that there was no way around saying what happened.

00:48Because they had that note, they had a confession

00:51that we were responsible for my parents' death.

00:55I was supposed to destroy that letter.

00:58But it was a precious letter to me.

01:02It was one of those moments where Lyle was

01:07really expressing his own pain.

01:10And I didn't want to just throw it away

01:14because that didn't happen often between us.

01:20Two weeks later, the sheriff's department

01:22quietly put out a statement.

01:24Gee, sorry. Eric and Lyle never tried to escape.

01:27My bad.

01:31As a result of them finding this letter

01:34in the summer of 1990,

01:36we now had to confess to everyone.
