00:09Welcome Juan Pablo Dipache, actor and singer of Argentinian origin.
00:15Welcome to People in Spanish for the first time.
00:18Thank you very much for inviting me. I'm happy to be here with you.
00:22Yes, it's good that we could make it, because I know that you are visiting New York for a very special reason.
00:28You have this movie that is doing its premiere in New York.
00:31It's not a world premiere, because it already was, and it was in Europe.
00:34We are going to talk about that in a moment.
00:36The movie is called Duino, and well, in that you are the protagonist, but you also play the co-director.
00:44So tell us, to start there, what is the movie about?
00:48Well, the movie is a movie about a director who is finishing a movie based on a very important event of his past,
00:59when he fell in love for the first time.
01:01And let's say that Duino jumps between that past and that present,
01:08because it was a non-corresponding, unfinished love, and quite enigmatic.
01:14So, nothing, it has really been a work of love for many years.
01:21I started with this in 2020 with my best friend and collaborator Andrés Pepe Estrada,
01:26who is the editor of Santiago Mitre, of Argentina 1985, who won the London Globe, anyway.
01:33But Andrés and I have known each other since we were 12 years old.
01:36So when I decided to make this movie, I invited him, and thanks to him saying yes, this was...
01:43It has been, nothing, a beautiful process of the last three years, I would say.
01:47And the executive producer is Norman Lear, who left us in December.
01:55But, well, a spectacular person who gave us his blessing in the movie, and...
02:03So all of this has a lot of magic, because it is the first time that I get in the role of a director of a feature film.
02:12I have directed many short films and video clips, etc., but this is the first time that I get in the director's chair.
02:19And I am very happy to bring it to New York, because, well, it is THE place, right?
02:23New York is very important to me, in many ways.
02:26Because of Broadway, because I studied here at the school of Utah Hagen, acting, anyway.
02:34And well, the title of the film, Duino, is the location, right?
02:38It is a town in Italy, very beautiful, I think it is close to the sea.
02:45Tell us about the locations where this film was filmed.
02:51Duino is a place, it is a small town in the north of Italy, near Trieste and Venice.
02:58Duino is also where the United World College exists.
03:08This place is very crazy and very spectacular, because it is an organization.
03:11Now there are 18 of these schools all over the world, but practically what they do is,
03:15they take 16-17 year old children to finish the last two years of high school.
03:22They choose them in their countries and take them to this place, where they finish that high school.
03:28And well, it is a place...
03:29And it is not fiction, this is real.
03:30No, this is real, this is real.
03:31It is a fiction that exists.
03:33It exists, and well, I was selected at 17 years old in Argentina, and they sent me to the school of Italy.
03:40And well, there, let's say, my life took a course that would not have been the same if I had not gone.
03:46Because, well, there I discovered art, there I discovered that I wanted to be on stage,
03:50that I wanted to, let's say, dedicate myself to what I dedicate myself to today.
03:54Although they are not artistic schools, they are schools of all kinds of education.
03:58But well, the most important thing is that they are schools where communication between cultures is encouraged.
04:05And it was created a bit to promote peace between cultures, so that there are fewer wars.
04:12So nothing, when I asked the school if I could go and record some scenes there,
04:18they told me, absolutely, come here, and you record the whole movie here.
04:23So I could, not only, let's say, well, thanks to them, my life changed in 97 when I went.
04:31And now it is very important for the movie, and I would say that it changed my life a second time.
04:36But well, that's doing it.
04:38And well, before the premiere at this New York festival, you are also going to present yourself in a forum,
04:43it's called 54 Below, and you are going to be singing, you are going to present your individual show,
04:49what they call in English a one-man show.
04:52You are going to be singing some songs, I think, by Pope Porter, there are the Bee Gees.
04:57Describe to the public of People in Spanish how this show is.
05:02Look, I, the career as a singer is something that has accompanied me since I started,
05:09from my beginnings, really my beginnings were in dance and theater and musicals.
05:14I mean, my first contact with the stage was like this, it was getting on stage, singing and dancing.
05:19So it's something that I always keep very close to my heart,
05:24and every time I'm offered to go back to New York to do something like this, I do it very quickly,
05:30especially if it's below Studio 54, which is, let's say, the most legendary disco in history.
05:42This is a celebration of my beginnings, how my career started in the musicals,
05:49which then, well, I went to Spain, I did Fiebre de Sábado de Noche, like Tony Manero,
05:54and then the movie with Mamma Mia!, Meryl Streep, Cody Firth, in short,
05:58my beginnings were very musical.
06:02So it's a celebration of those moments, a celebration of the 70s, because it's my decade,
06:07and it's where, in my opinion, the best compositions and musical works that we have today came out.
06:17So there's nothing better than doing it below Studio 54.
06:22Well, just repeat the dates of the show and your social media.
06:29The show is on 54 Below this Friday and this Saturday, October 4 and 5, at 7pm.
06:38And Duino, the premiere in New York, at Newfest, is October 12 at 6pm at the SVA Theatre.
06:47And your social media?
06:49My social media is my full name, Juan Pablo Dipache, Instagram, Facebook, etc.
06:55And you can follow Duino Movie, as you heard, also on Instagram and Facebook,
07:02because there you can know when in the future the movie will be able to be seen in other cinemas, other cities.
