01:10Good evening, a man from Strood suffering from long COVID says he's being ignored
01:25and treated as if he's making things up.
01:28Jason Vardy tested positive for COVID in 2020 and says he's never recovered.
01:33He's now calling for better support, not only for himself,
01:36but for others who are also feeling neglected by the health system.
01:39Mahima Abedin went to speak to him at his house, where he now spends all of his time.
01:44Stay home, save lives. Kent and the rest of the country are in lockdown.
01:48The Prime Minister Boris Johnson shut down the country less than 24 hours ago
01:53to fight what he calls a war against the coronavirus.
01:57We'll never forget the message, stay at home, because of a global pandemic.
02:02That was four years ago.
02:04But for Jason from Strood, this is his reality every day, even now.
02:10Except he's not being told to stay inside. It's his pain that keeps him in.
02:16He had COVID back in 2020, and he's never recovered.
02:20To me, this body isn't mine anymore. It's not what I recognise as being me.
02:25It's what I was before that. It's something completely different to what I am now.
02:29It's every time I think that I'm feeling a lot better,
02:32all of a sudden, my body just doesn't want to do it.
02:35It causes pain or I'm tired. It's just not the life that I thought that I'd be living.
02:42I think in my lifetime, will I actually get to see any answers for my problems?
02:48I don't know, which is frustrating, as I felt that there should have been more for me.
02:54I'm here right now in Jason's garden, and you might be wondering why I'm showing you this.
02:59But the reason I'm showing this is because this garden is something that Jason took pride in.
03:05He loved gardening, but unfortunately, because of long COVID, not only has he lost his job,
03:10he tells me he's also had to stop doing the things that he once loved doing,
03:14because he can no longer be as active as he once was before.
03:18He also told me he was a key worker, working as a food distributor.
03:22He was providing a service to the whole country.
03:25And as someone who was helping run the country at one point,
03:27he says he feels very disappointed that now he's being ignored.
03:32In response to Jason feeling neglected, the government say long COVID can have a debilitating
03:37impact on people's health, and that it's committed to ensuring everyone is able to
03:42access the care that they need. It also says that the NHS has opened more than 90
03:47specialist long COVID services in England. But despite this, Jason still feels isolated.
03:53But he manages to try and see the positives in the little things he does in his day-to-day life.
03:58Just keep fighting, don't stop, but also make sure that you give yourself a quality of life.
04:07But it's not always this easy, as he's having to sit inside and endure not only the physical pain
04:12of long COVID, but the mental too, hoping that one day he'll get the answers that he's been
04:18waiting for. Mahima Abedin for KMTV in Strood.
04:23A house explosion in Charing that killed a mother of five is believed to have been triggered by
04:28gas in her kitchen. At the inquest opening into her death today, it was claimed Charlayne
04:32Burville suffered severe burns and died the next day in hospital. Well, Kent Fire and Rescue
04:37Service says the cause is believed to be accidental, but forensics tests are still ongoing.
04:42Abbey Hook joins me now with more. Abbey, we've understood a bit more of a picture of what has
04:47happened during this really shocking story. And what makes it so shocking is this picture
04:52here, what two weeks ago was Charlayne's house and the explosion that destroyed it and sadly
04:58cost her her life. At the inquest heard today, it's believed it was triggered by gas in her
05:03kitchen, as you said, in Charing, in her home near Ashford. And it was on the morning on the
05:0819th of September when residents heard a loud bang. That bang said to be this liquefied petroleum gas
05:14known as an LPG causing the explosion shortly before midday. And you can see the absolute
05:19devastation on what was her home. And it was here in her home in Charing near Ashford there on
05:25Canterbury Road. It prompted huge emergency response from police, ambulance and fire crews.
05:31You can see the police cordoned off that road there. And I mean, it's hard to imagine that this
05:37was actually somebody's home just a few weeks ago. What more do we know about Charlayne herself?
05:42Well, she was a mother, a mother of five, as you said in your opening there, a wife, a receptionist,
05:46a grandmother, just 60 years old. Her daughter's gone on to say on Facebook that they've lost
05:53their mum, their nan, their sister, their wife. She doesn't know how to put it into words and
05:58that she's always in her heart. Charlayne's grandson went on to share the same sentiment
06:02as well. So tributes pouring in from her after what is really tragic and incredibly shocking.
06:08During the hearing, the coroner described the cause of her death as 95 per cent burns from a
06:14domestic explosion. She was actually found by bystanders who rushed to the property after
06:19hearing that loud explosion. She was standing outside what used to be her home in a state of
06:24shock, still talking, but trying actually to get into her car while explosions continued in the
06:30house behind. She was then airlifted to hospital. But it was at 9 a.m. the next day when doctors
06:35said there was no more they could do. They had no choice but to withdraw her life support. And
06:40within about two hours, she sadly passed away. And I mean, of course, just looking at these
06:44images, it's hard to imagine even for the neighbours and those that live in the area
06:48that this could happen so close to them, practically on their doorstep. Well, at the
06:51time, local residents, neighbours, shopkeepers nearby were actually evacuated. Police cordons
06:57blocking access to Canterbury Road. And we can presume this was, of course, because investigations
07:01were ongoing. They were trying to determine exactly what caused such a devastating explosion
07:07and actually who else could possibly be at risk when something like this happens so suddenly.
07:12Kent Fire and Rescue Service is yet to release the final details of its investigation into the
07:17course. But for now, they say it's believed to be accidental. Forensic tests are still ongoing and
07:22the coroner has adjourned the inquest until early next year, which will be picked back up on the
07:2710th of January. And hopefully some answers for her family. Drivers reporting issues with
07:34their cars after what's believed to have been contaminated fuel at a petrol station in Medway
07:39have had to spend thousands of pounds on repairs. Dozens of motorists are experiencing problems
07:44after filling their cars with unleaded petrol at Morrison's in Strood. It comes after the
07:49supermarket announced earlier this year that all of its forecourts had been taken on by a
07:53motor fuel group, or MFG. Well, Kent Online has approached MFG for a comment, but no response
07:59has yet been received. A man's been imprisoned after more than 1,000 cannabis plants were found
08:05at his home in Hoo. 32-year-old Amarildo Emiri had been living at the property for two weeks
08:11before a search warrant was carried out in May of this year. A total of 1,069 plants were discovered
08:17across nine rooms. Mr Emiri pleaded guilty at Maidstone Crown Court to the production of a
08:22Class B drug before being sentenced to 36 weeks in prison. After a wet spring, dry winter and late
08:30summer, a vineyard in Ashford has recognised that it's been a challenging year for farmers across
08:35Kent. Although the grapes at the vineyard can benefit from changes in the climate, the future
08:40of manual farming, and in particular tourism to the site, is in jeopardy. Kristen went to the
08:45vineyard to find out more. The Biddington Vineyard in Ashford are noticing changes in their business
08:51with the increase of extreme weather conditions in the past year, like wetter springs, more flooding,
08:57late summers and warmer winters. Last year, like most vineyards in Kent, they gathered well over
09:03100 tonnes of crop, but this year the harvest has reduced to 40, just below their normal intake of
09:1050 tonnes. Although Tom admits that this year's crop has been less than that of previous years,
09:16he says that his family are well used to adapting and that it might actually be beneficial for the
09:20grapes as they get a chance to change in flavour every year. For vines, for characteristics in
09:25making wine, weather factors, stress factors, they all bring different flavours, they bring
09:31different characteristics to wine, so that's a good thing, so each year is different. Kent's the place
09:35to be for growing vines, you know, we went to a launch party at the main everyone's, you know,
09:40last week, big French champagne name, and they've decided to be in Kent, and that's where we are,
09:47so, you know, as a group, Wine Garden of England, you know, I think, you know, we're in a really
09:51strong position and really excited for where it's all going. Tom states, however, that the company
09:55has been affected by climate change in a variety of ways, but he seemed optimistic that he will
10:01continue to adapt and diversify his methods of farming. On the tourism side, we've seen,
10:06you know, increasing numbers of people wanting to come and see us, but the spend has been
10:12slightly down. Is that to do with the weather? Yes, I think, you know, people are coming, they're
10:17sitting in the yard, going for a walk around the vineyard and having a bottle of wine or a glass of
10:22wine. If the weather's not quite, you know, as sunny as it was last year, they're not staying
10:28for that second bottle of wine or second glass, so I think, you know, it affects us in that way.
10:33From a growing point of view, it's been a really, really tough year right from the start, you know,
10:38I'm still waiting to see summer and the first of October and I'm not really sure if we're going to
10:43see it, so we're straight into autumn, but yeah, I mean, you go with what you've got, don't you?
10:48You can't change the weather. With the rise of economical pressures, he also mentioned how farms
10:53across Kent are considering changing from manual labour to machinery in order to reduce costs.
10:59So, with all this in mind, it seems that the people at this vineyard are optimistic as they
11:04continue to cope well with the increase of extreme weather conditions. But while grapes can benefit
11:08from these stressors, it seems the future of farming in general will be forced to change,
