00:00The movie starts with a brief montage of Earth in ruins.
00:03A solar flare damaged the ozone layer 10 years ago,
00:06causing temperatures to climb to 150 degrees Fahrenheit.
00:10Planet Earth has deteriorated into a mostly inhospitable wasteland,
00:14burned by UV radiation and vulnerable to catastrophic weather phenomena.
00:19Finch, one of the few survivors, is shown at the start.
00:22He is a robotic engineer equipped with a suit that protects him from the heat and UV rays.
00:27Like any other day, he's scavenging for supplies with his robot Dewey.
00:31When he walks inside a store,
00:33his measurements suggest that UV radiation levels in the area are quite high.
00:37Meanwhile, the robot picks whatever is left in the store.
00:41Finch is then seen taking some dog food.
00:43After leaving, he marks the area so that he can keep track of the places that are scavenged.
00:48In the next scene, Finch travels through a deserted town
00:51that has been ravaged due to the ozone layer's depletion.
00:54The UV rays make it impossible for people to go outside,
00:58so the majority of the city has been evacuated.
01:01Suddenly, Finch's suit emits a warning that a storm is approaching.
01:05He spins the truck around and slams on the accelerator while the giant storm chases him.
01:10Luckily, he manages to reach his underground laboratory,
01:14which was formerly owned by the firm for which he worked before the catastrophe hit.
01:18Later, we get to know that Finch is dying from tuberculosis.
01:22His dog and companion, Goodyear, is waiting for him at his big house.
01:26He hugs and kisses the dog, then prepares the food he found earlier.
01:30While Goodyear eats, Finch merely sips on a drink as the supplies are running out.
01:35Later, with the help of an AI, Finch uploads basic instructions on his new project
01:39like how to care for a dog, how to do household chores, and so on.
01:43Since Finch loves Goodyear more than anything,
01:46he is working on creating a highly specialized robot to care for him after his death.
01:51Finch has been conducting a lot of studies on UV rays and radiation exposure.
01:56Later, he removes Dewey's eyes and attaches them to his new robot.
02:00After turning on the robot, he starts transmitting data to it.
02:03After a lot of failed attempts to communicate, the robot finally nods its head,
02:08symbolizing that it is understanding what Finch is trying to convey.
02:12Finch is overjoyed by the reaction from the robot and the fact that he's made it one step further.
02:17He also plays with his dog, believing that he might soon have a new friend.
02:22Finch then tells the robot to mention something about himself.
02:25The robot says that he has some rules, such as not harming humans,
02:29but the most essential rule is that in Finch's absence,
02:32he must take care of Goodyear at all costs.
02:35All of a sudden, the power goes out.
02:37Finch heads out to repair the wind turbine.
02:39He connects the cable, after which the lights are restored.
02:43Inside, the robot names himself Jeff.
02:45Meanwhile, a gigantic storm is seen coming their way.
02:48Finch comes back and connects Jeff to the weather station so he can make a forecast.
02:53Jeff says that four different storms will approach them in the next 24 hours,
02:58and they will not be able to avoid them.
03:00He also forecasts that it will last roughly 40 days.
03:03Hearing this, Finch believes that they have to leave the place soon.
03:07He also presumes San Francisco as their best option.
03:10Finch then starts to build the robot's full body.
03:13After finishing it, Finch increases the robot's transfer rate
03:17and starts teaching him how to walk.
03:19Following a bit of practice, Jeff successfully starts walking.
03:22While Finch is happy with the progress,
03:25Goodyear dislikes the robot and doesn't trust him at all.
03:28As the storm gets nearer, Finch starts packing all the essentials.
03:32Finch calls Dewey to join them, but forgets that he has removed his eyes.
03:36Hence, he attaches a camera so that he can finally see again.
03:39The four then climb on an RV and start making their way to San Francisco.
03:44At the start of the ride, Jeff is extremely curious as he tries to learn everything Finch does.
03:49For the time being, the group has successfully managed to evade the storm.
03:53They then stop by a deserted town.
03:56Finch wears the UV protection suit and calls Jeff to join him outside.
04:00He then starts teaching Jeff basic instructions on how to scavenge
04:03and also about the hazards of the sun.
04:05Soon fades away when Finch notices the storm approaching them.
04:09He gathers everyone and tries to outrun the storm, but it eventually catches up to them.
04:14Finch rushes outside with Jeff and orders him to help him tie the RV with wires.
04:19After Finch gets tired, Jeff takes charge and successfully completes the task.
04:24Finch then gets inside the RV and secures it.
04:27Soon, the massive tornado hits,
04:29and all the wires begin to snap one after another until only one is remaining.
04:34Luckily, the storm passes away and everyone is fine.
04:38Finch appreciates Jeff's good work,
04:40but gets disappointed to learn that the front tire of the vehicle is damaged.
04:44They have a spare tire, but do not have a jack to lift the vehicle.
04:47However, Jeff simply lifts the vehicle using his sheer strength
04:51and tells Finch to change the tire.
04:53The next morning, Jeff attempts to communicate with Goodyear,
04:57saying that he is trying to learn the dog language.
04:59But Finch wakes up and makes him understand
05:01that it will take some time for him and Goodyear to be on good terms.
05:05Later that day, a board points out that San Francisco is 1,522 miles away.
05:11Finch is stumped when Jeff asks him to explain the notion of trust.
05:15Hence, he just shares his own life story.
05:18He mentions how he alone solved the software problem during a project,
05:22but gave the credit to the whole team.
05:24In this way, he was able to win their trust.
05:26All this time, Finch's health keeps deteriorating.
05:30Then they stop at a restaurant where Finch vomits blood,
05:33realizing that he doesn't have much time left.
05:36Finch takes Goodyear inside the restaurant and starts playing with him.
05:40Meanwhile, Jeff is toying with the RV.
05:42He puts on songs while he tries to drive.
05:45Because of his clumsiness, he lets go of the handbrake and the RV hits a car.
05:49When Finch confronts Jeff, he acts all innocent.
05:53He then reverses the RV, only to crash it again.
05:56A furious Finch demonstrates what happens to his skin when he steps in the sunlight.
06:01He then screams at Jeff, telling him that his only job is to take care of Goodyear.
06:06After they leave the restaurant, Finch decides to teach Jeff driving.
06:10At first, Jeff is clumsy as usual, but he soon gets the hang of it and starts driving smoothly.
06:15Finch is pleased at this, but the dog still remains skeptical.
06:19At night, they stop by the road to camp.
06:22There, the beautiful northern lights can be seen as the ozone layer is no longer present.
06:27Jeff suggests that they could drive at night, mentioning that daylight is hazardous.
06:31However, Finch teaches him that hungry people approach at night, and it's dangerous.
06:36In the morning, Finch vomits blood and is also shivering.
06:40Jeff takes good care of him, asking if he should call the doctor.
06:44After that, they continue their journey.
06:46When they arrive in a major city,
06:48Jeff wakes Dewey and the duo head out to scavenge for supplies.
06:52They come across a hospital that looks looted,
06:54but Jeff has yet to learn that, so he continues his way inside.
06:58When Finch wakes up, he discovers that both robots are missing.
07:02He knows that trouble lies ahead, so despite being extremely weak,
07:06he suits up and sets off to find Jeff and Dewey.
07:09Someone is watching him from the shadows.
07:12Upstairs, Jeff is delighted to find food, medicine, and even a fancy jacket for himself.
07:17Meanwhile, Dewey finds some snacks but doesn't notice a bear trap near it.
07:21As he reaches for the snacks, the bear trap rips him apart.
07:25After a distraught Finch finds him, he apologizes and turns off his power.
07:30Soon, Finch hears a rumbling sound and finds Jeff as well.
07:34Finch stresses that they cannot stay at the place any longer as it is not safe for them.
07:39Both of them then make a run.
07:40When they reach their RV, they immediately speed away, but a vehicle starts following them.
07:46After reaching a bit farther, Finch hands over the steering to Jeff,
07:50telling him not to make any mistakes from now on.
07:53He also notices the car still following them.
07:55They turn off the headlights as Jeff is able to see in the dark.
07:59While the mystery car still pursues them,
08:01Finch suggests Jeff step on the accelerator and speed up.
08:05As they are driving into a storm, Finch grabs the wheel and steers it off the road.
08:10He intends to use the underpass instead.
08:12Despite Jeff trying his best to explain that the height of the RV is higher than the underpass,
08:17Finch does not listen and eventually it crashes and the RV's solar panels are destroyed.
08:22After the crash, Jeff uses his strength to push the RV inside.
08:27The car that was following them approaches.
08:29However, it stops for a little moment and then drives away.
08:33After knowing that the people have gone,
08:35Finch rushes outside and discovers that all of their solar panels have been damaged.
08:39He starts blaming himself for his poor judgment and also mentions that he cannot repair it.
08:45Jeff assures him that he can take them to San Francisco,
08:48but Finch snaps at him to stop talking.
08:50A furious Finch then returns to the vehicle while Jeff stands outside in the rain.
08:55After a little snooping, Jeff comes inside and tells Finch
08:58that he thinks they'll make it to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
09:02Meanwhile, Finch shares another story and relates why he doesn't trust people
09:06and how he discovered Goodyear in a bag.
09:08He mentions that Goodyear was terrified and alone
09:11and how he promised to protect him at any cost.
09:14Finch adds that hunger can turn any good human being into a killer,
09:18but it turned Finch into a coward as he kept hiding
09:20while some young boys killed a young girl and her mother in the supermarket.
09:24The next morning, another board points out that it is 480 miles to San Francisco.
09:30Jeff is at the wheel while a weak Finch rests.
09:33Suddenly, Jeff notices a butterfly on the windshield.
09:36He pulls over, awakens Finch, and points to the butterfly.
09:40Finch gets up and stretches his hand out, only to find it unaffected by the sunlight.
09:45He then steps outside and feels the sun.
09:47The UV radiation has decreased to the point where it is no longer a threat.
09:51He sees a flower and another butterfly and laughs heartily.
09:55As they continue their journey, they get past flowering plains.
09:59Later, Finch gets dressed and they decide to have a picnic in the sun,
10:03something he hasn't done in over a decade.
10:05Finch then shares some more memories of his past
10:08while wishing that he could make more of his life.
10:11Hearing this, Jeff excitedly gets up and explains that if they leave now,
10:15they will reach the Golden Gate Bridge in about 18 hours.
10:18However, Finch says that he can't make it.
10:21A saddened Jeff then promises to take care of Goodyear when he's gone.
10:24After that, Finch brings out Goodyear's ball and the two engage in a game of fetch.
10:30He then hands the ball to Jeff and explains
10:32that this is one of the first stages in creating trust with the dog.
10:35The two then have a brief moment of fun when suddenly Finch starts coughing up blood.
10:40His white suit is now covered in blood.
10:42When Jeff asks if he can help him, Finch responds that he has already done so.
10:47He then shakes Jeff's hand and they hug.
10:49Here, Jeff is visibly upset and we can see that he has emotions too.
10:54Jeff then assists Finch into the RV where he lies down.
10:57Goodyear consoles Finch while Jeff packs their belongings.
11:01Finch pats his beloved buddy on the back one more time before passing away.
11:05The two then burn Finch in the plains along with his UV suit.
11:08After they are done mourning,
11:10Jeff continues with the daily routine of Finch and feeds the dog.
11:14Later, they play fetch again.
11:15With Jeff, Goodyear starts to feel safe and begins to change.
11:19Jeff also feels that Goodyear is now his responsibility and they set off again.
11:24He befriends Goodyear, who finally embraces him.
11:27When they finally arrive at the Golden Gate Bridge,
11:30Jeff constructs a memorial for Finch.
11:32There, they find several messages left by people for their loved ones,
11:37letting them know where they can be found.
11:39This concludes that there are more survivors,
11:41with the possibility of family members being reunited.
11:44In the final scene, Jeff sticks his drawing of Finch, Goodyear, and himself on the fence.
11:49The two of them then leave for somewhere else.
