00:00The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, boosted the Youth in Peace program since January 1st, 2023 to prevent youngsters from joining criminal groups.
00:09The government program provides one million Colombian pesos per month to young people nationwide
00:14who live in extreme poverty conditions to help them study or for them to open their own businesses.
00:20Lately, President Petro urged youngsters to work for a higher life quality and unity
00:25in order to counter the over 55,000 suicide attempts of young people
00:29and decrease their participation in criminal actions as well.
00:32One of the beneficiaries of the Youth in Peace program shared his experience.
00:41It is very difficult to live in the Alberto Lleras Camargo neighborhood hit by violence.
00:45Why is that?
00:47Because I've known what a gun is and what a bullet is since I was a little boy.
00:50And it is not easy, and today people think that it does not leave long-term effects, but it does.
00:57I have been able to invest the resources from the Youth in Peace program in this stationary store business
01:02to generate income not only for myself but also for my family,
01:05and in the near future, we hope to expand this and create opportunities for other young people like me.
