00:00Come with us behind the scenes of the new Studio Ghibli exhibition at the Art Science Museum.
00:07The animation studio behind Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro and House Moving Castle
00:12is bringing the showcase to Singapore for the first time.
00:15And we find out what it takes to bring the world of Studio Ghibli to life.
00:20The exhibition features 16 large-scale sets of iconic scenes from many of its beloved films.
00:32It first opened in Japan in 2013, followed by South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and most recently, Bangkok.
00:40The Singapore iteration showcases 11 Studio Ghibli films,
00:44including Kiki's Delivery Service, Pompoko, Castle in the Sky and more.
00:51The exhibit's arrival in Singapore has actually been a decade in the making.
00:55We've been working on this exhibition for the past two years,
00:59but I've been the director of Art Science Museum for 10 years
01:02and I've been wishing for a Ghibli exhibition in Singapore for that entire time.
01:08And we've always thought that the stories, the ideas, the aesthetics that the studio is so renowned for
01:15would be a perfect fit for Singapore, and especially at Art Science Museum.
01:22Spanning 2,400 square metres across two levels,
01:25the showcase is one of the largest exhibitions brought to the Art Science Museum.
01:30Despite its scale, everything came together in just two and a half weeks.
01:35The exhibition has been evolving over the years.
01:38It was our desire to make this the best version.
01:41We also have new props that did not exist before.
01:44For example, the painting from Ursula in Kiki's Delivery Service.
01:49Every set is a testament to meticulous craftsmanship down to the smallest details.
01:54Many elements were painstakingly hand-painted by a team of Japanese and local painters,
01:59such as the bakery from Kiki's Delivery Service,
02:02Howl's Home from Howl's Moving Castle and these food props.
02:06The team went the extra mile by hand-painting even the floors of the temple set from Pompoko,
02:11a film about a colony of shapeshifting tanuki, or Japanese raccoon dogs.
02:17And what's a Studio Ghibli exhibition without some hidden gems and easter eggs?
02:21Like these contracts with the name of actual crew members written on them.
02:25Keep a lookout for the furry tanuki tails hidden within the Pompoko temple,
02:29hinting at the shapeshifting creatures that reside there.
02:33In this iconic scene from Spirited Away,
02:35the projected silhouette of the lonely spirit called No-Face looms over a massive feast.
02:41Look closer and you'll spot familiar local favourites like chicken rice and tutu kueh.
02:46In each country it visits, the exhibition includes a unique local touch
02:50by highlighting notable dishes from that region.
02:54The extreme level of care and detail that went into everything that has to do with the exhibition.
02:59It might have been a challenge but we think that the visitors will appreciate all the work that we put into it.
03:07You can catch The World of Studio Ghibli from October 4th, 2024 to February 2nd, 2025 at the ArtScience Museum.
