00:00Every 28th of September, it is called World Rabies Day and as part of this celebration,
00:06Doc V. Diaz will talk to you about how to properly vaccinate our pets to avoid rabies.
00:14We will be joined again by Doc V. Diaz from the Department of Health of DOH. Doc V.
00:20Diaz will be joined by Doc V. Diaz and Doc V. Diaz will be joined by Doc V. Diaz.
00:40Doc V. Diaz will be joined by Doc V. Diaz and Doc V. Diaz will be joined by Doc V. Diaz.
00:48Do you know that the number of rabies cases in our country is increasing?
00:54The DOH has reported 342 cases of rabies and this is higher than the number of recorded cases in the same period last year of 281 cases.
01:10300 of these cases are from dog bites while 38 are from cat bites.
01:18One is from bat or cat bite and the remaining 3 cases are from the bite of other animals.
01:26For this reason, we will be joined by Dr. Marie Sheila Ordinario from the Bureau of Animal Industry of the Department of Agriculture
01:38to give us information on how to vaccinate our pets and how to properly take care of them to avoid rabies.
01:52Good morning Dr. Sheng. Welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines.
01:58Dr. Sheng, aside from dogs and cats, are there any other animals that we can get rabies from?
02:08What are these animals?
02:10Rabies for animals is obtained from warm-blooded animals.
02:16That's why we are having reported cases of rabies in dogs, cats, and sometimes even in goats.
02:26We recently heard about this on Facebook.
02:29They can be infected, even pigs, because they are warm-blooded animals.
02:35For chickens, we can't get rabies from them.
02:37For birds, we can't get rabies from them.
02:38For snakes, we can't get rabies from them.
02:40So, they are warm-blooded animals.
02:42Even humans can get rabies from them.
02:44Why do panikis have rabies?
02:47They are also considered warm-blooded.
02:49They are also considered mammals.
02:51Ah, mammals.
02:52Yes, they can also get rabies from them.
02:54Especially for bats, which are called carnivores.
02:59They don't eat fruits.
03:01Is it true that rabies is inborn in animals?
03:04And how do animals get rabies?
03:08Rabies is not inborn.
03:10It means that a dog can be transferred to another animal,
03:16to another dog, even to a goat, even to a cow.
03:20It can be transferred through saliva.
03:24That's why it's common to have rabies.
03:27But rabies is not inborn.
03:31Rabies is transmitted through the saliva of infected animals.
03:38So, rabies is transmitted through the saliva of infected animals.
03:45Is it the same for humans?
03:47Yes.
03:48That's why in human cases,
03:52usually, there's a history of biting incident.
03:55Or if it's a cat, there's a scratch.
03:59There's a history of biting.
04:01Aside from the bite of an animal,
04:04is there another way for a person to be infected with rabies?
04:09Another way for a person to get rabies
04:16is if we have a dog or an animal that's infected with rabies.
04:23That's why the provision of our law,
04:26Republic Act 9482 or the Anti-Rabies Act of 2007,
04:30prohibits dog meat trade.
04:34Because if that dog is infected with rabies,
04:37and we don't have the required protective equipment,
04:42we can be infected.
04:44For example, from the cerebrospinal fluid,
04:48because the virus is in the nervous system,
04:50we will remember that the virus is not in the blood.
04:54So, if we can touch an infected animal's blood,
04:57the virus is not there.
04:59It's also not tested from the nervous system.
05:02So, the cerebrospinal fluid,
05:05the spinal cord, the brain,
05:08if it's infected,
05:09our mucous membranes,
05:11the eyes,
05:12or if it's an accidental bite,
05:15or if we have open wounds,
05:17we can be infected.
05:19Why is it important to vaccinate our pets?
05:24Because it's their first protection.
05:27Like what I said earlier,
05:29we don't vaccinate them because they have rabies,
05:33so that the rabies can be treated.
05:36So, we give the rabies vaccine as protection,
05:39if in case that animal gets exposed to another animal with rabies.
05:44So, when a pet is vaccinated,
05:46it will produce antibodies as their protection,
05:49if in case they get exposed to an infected animal.
05:54So, what kinds of vaccines do pets need?
05:58Can these vaccines prevent the rabies from infecting a pet?
06:05So, for pets,
06:07like babies,
06:09they are also given different vaccines
06:12if they are at least 6 weeks of age.
06:15So, there's the so-called combination shot,
06:18or the 5-in-1 vaccine,
06:206-in-1,
06:217-in-1,
06:22and 9-in-1.
06:23So, those are combinations of vaccines for different diseases.
06:27So, aside from the rabies vaccine,
06:30which is sometimes given separately,
06:32if the dog or cat is at least 3 months of age,
06:36there's also a combination shot with a rabies component.
06:41So, like I said,
06:43it's like 3-in-1 coffee.
06:45It increases up to 8-in-1 or 9-in-1.
06:48It's like that.
06:49So, there's a vaccine with rabies.
06:51What kind of vaccine do you give?
06:53You said 3-in-1, 8-in-1?
06:55The anti-rabies vaccine is for rabies.
06:59Just rabies?
07:00Yes.
07:01So, you recommend that pets should be vaccinated every year?
07:06Yes, at least once a year.
07:08That's what the law requires for our pet owners.
07:12Yes.
07:13The first responsibility of a pet owner
07:17is to provide the required vaccine for our pets.
07:22So, what are our programs doing for rabies
07:27because many people are dying from rabies?
07:31Actually, yes.
07:32I think it's the highest since 2007.
07:35So, now, through our secretary,
07:39Secretary Kiko,
07:41she allocated P30 million this year
07:44to procure a vaccine for rabies
07:47that we will give to LGUs.
07:50So, to catch up with the vaccination,
07:55we will give a vaccine this year
07:58and in the next year,
08:00LGUs will use the vaccine to vaccinate their localities.
08:04That's already done.
08:06Because there are a lot of incidents that have already been done.
08:10After the vaccination,
08:12what should rabies patients do if they have rabies?
08:19The first thing we should do is to wash their wounds.
08:25As I said earlier,
08:27rabies virus is in the saliva.
08:29So, our goal is to wash the saliva
08:35that has been infected with the virus.
08:38So, at least 15 minutes with running water and soap or detergent to wash off.
08:43Because rabies virus is easy to die.
08:46So, it means, for example,
08:49with UV light, with heat, with detergents even,
08:55the virus will die.
08:56It will deactivate.
08:58So, that's why the first thing we should do is to wash the wound.
09:02Don't use garlic, don't use ginger, don't use garlic,
09:05don't use rocks.
09:06It's running water and soap or detergent.
09:10And then, let's run to the bite treatment centers.
09:15Thank you very much again, Dr. Marie Sheila Ordinario,
09:19for the information you shared in our program.
09:23RSPs, be a responsible pet owner.
09:27Vaccinate your pet against rabies.
09:31And if possible, wash the wound with running water and soap
09:36and go to the nearest animal bite center.
09:40Until next time, RSP!
