00:00He wanted to be the very best like no one ever was, and it only took him a couple decades
00:05to do it.
00:06Ash Ketchum's career as a Pokemon trainer has been more shocking than his Pikachu.
00:11In anime, it's not unusual for young male protagonists to be voiced by women.
00:15This is the case in popular anime like Naruto, One Piece, Hunter x Hunter, and, of course,
00:21Pokemon.
00:22In both the Japanese and English versions, Ash is voiced by a few different women.
00:26He's played by Rika Matsumoto in the Japanese version, while Veronica Taylor, Sarah Natochene,
00:32and Kasey Rogers have voiced him in English dubs.
00:34I'm Ash Ketchum.
00:35I came from Pallet Town in the Kanto region, and this is my good buddy, Pikachu.
00:41Nice to meet ya!
00:43In addition to voicing Ash, Taylor and Natochene have also voiced his mother, Delia, along
00:48with other characters and Pokemon.
00:50That's an impressive feat, considering how different the two characters sound.
00:54The other characters Taylor and Natochene have voiced, like Ash's traveling companion
00:58May and the gym leader Skyler, respectively, also sound nothing like him.
01:03Rogers voiced Ash in 2006's The Mastermind of Mirage Pokemon Special, but has also provided
01:08voices for a number of Pokemon with their own distinct cries, like Mr. Mime and Jessie's
01:13Wobbuffet.
01:15Since the Pokemon anime is based on the Pokemon video game series, it makes sense that Ash
01:19has a lot in common with the protagonists from the games.
01:21In every generation of the video game series, the player characters receive their starter
01:25Pokemon from the Professor of their region, battle their rivals, and share the same goal
01:30of becoming the Pokemon champion.
01:32This is also the case for Ash, who gets his Pikachu from Professor Oak, battles it out
01:37with rivals like Gary and Paul, and participates in tournaments with the championship title
01:42On the Line.
01:43Perhaps the most specific similarity between Ash and the video game protagonists is that,
01:47with one exception, they don't have a father figure around, just as Ash always has his
01:51mother Delia to come home to, the video game protagonists can always visit their mothers
01:55in their hometown.
01:56However, it remains a mystery where all of the fathers are.
02:00The only exception is in the third-generation games, where the player's father is the Petalburg
02:04gym leader, Norman.
02:06One of the most memorable parts of the Pokemon anime comes when Ash meets Misty in the very
02:10first episode.
02:11While being attacked and chased by a flock of Spearow, Ash rushes to get Pikachu and
02:16himself to safety, and gets caught on Misty's fishing line.
02:19Instead of properly introducing himself, Ash hops onto Misty's bike without permission,
02:24and speeds off toward the nearest Pokemon Center.
02:26Wait, what are you doing?
02:27I'm borrowing this.
02:28Wait, wait, that's my bike!
02:29I'll give it back someday!
02:30Spoiler alert, the bike never gets properly returned.
02:39Pikachu ends up destroying it while attacking the Spearow flock with a powerful electric
02:42move.
02:43Unfortunately for bike owners in the Pokemon universe, this is not a one-time thing for
02:47Ash and Pikachu.
02:49The same thing that happens to Misty also happens to several of Ash's other friends.
02:53In the first episode of Pokemon Advanced, Pikachu zaps May's bike along with Team Rocket.
02:58Likewise, the second episode of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl sees the destruction of Dawn's bike
03:03during a battle with Pikachu.
03:05If it has two wheels and pedals, it probably won't last a day with Ash and Pikachu around.
03:09Hey, what happened to your bike?
03:11What happened to my bike?
03:13You happened to my bike, you little loser!
03:16As someone who dreams of being the very best, Ash must face off against the toughest Pokemon
03:20trainers in every region.
03:22That might be easy enough to do in the video games with enough experience points, but it's
03:26no easy task in the anime.
03:28Between gym battles and tournaments, Ash actually loses quite a bit.
03:32In fact, Ash loses his very first gym battle.
03:35In episode 5, the young trainer rushes into the Pewter City Gym and challenges Brock to
03:40a battle without proper preparation.
03:42Brock's Onix wraps its massive stone body around Pikachu and immediately forces Ash
03:47to surrender.
03:48Later, in episode 14, Ash and Pikachu suffer a demoralizing loss to Lieutenant Surge and
03:54his Raichu that almost convinces the 10-year-old to evolve his companion.
03:58The most humiliating defeat, however, comes during the hyped league battle between Ash
04:02and his friendly rival, Richie, at the end of the Indigo League arc.
04:06Ash puts his faith in his powerful yet disobedient Charizard to defeat Richie's Pikachu, but
04:11Charizard lies down and refuses to obey.
04:14Because of this, Ash loses the match and is eliminated from the Indigo Plateau Conference
04:19entirely.
04:21In addition to losing a few gym battles in the Kanto region, Ash also acquires some of
04:25his gym badges in ways that don't really seem fair to other trainers.
04:29The fact that this happens more than once throughout Ash's Kanto journey makes us question
04:33his true talents as a trainer, and takes away from his early achievements.
04:37After Ash loses to Brock for the first time, he trains up his Pikachu and challenges the
04:42Rock-type gym leader to a rematch.
04:43This time, Pikachu defeats Brock's Rock- and Ground-type Geodude with a single electric
04:48attack, which should technically not be possible, since Ground-types are typically immune to
04:52electric attacks.
04:54When Onix is on the field, the Sprinkler conveniently goes off, and weakens Onix to the point where
04:59Pikachu's attack is enough to bring it down.
05:01Ash ends up showing mercy to the Onix and abandons the match, earning him the Boulder
05:06badge along with Brock's respect.
05:08Another unconventional gym victory happens with Ash's rematch against Sabrina and her
05:13Kadabra in Episode 24.
05:15Just like their initial fight, Sabrina seems to be in full control.
05:19However, the battle is interrupted by the mischievous Haunter, who shows up after following
05:23Ash from Lavender Town.
05:25The Haunter goofs around, making Sabrina and her Kadabra laugh until they are deemed unable
05:29to battle.
05:30By default, Ash is declared the winner and receives the Marsh badge.
05:34Maybe you should just quit now.
05:36Besides, the badges you do have you got out of pity.
05:39A badge is a badge!
05:42Oh!
05:43Since the beginning of his journey, Ash has captured many different Pokémon, some of which
05:47turn out to be incredibly strong members of his team with a little bit of training.
05:52The best example of this is Ash's first Fire-type, caused as a Charmander.
05:56It evolves into Charmeleon and then Charizard, and it receives special training at Characific
06:01Valley.
06:02To this day, Charizard is still considered one of Ash's strongest Pokémon.
06:06Unfortunately, many of Ash's other Pokémon don't get the same amount of attention or
06:10training to become that powerful.
06:12This is the most evident in the fact that Ash has a lot of Pokémon that aren't fully
06:15evolved, including Totodile, Bayleef, and of course, Pikachu.
06:20Pikachu has expressed a lack of interest in evolving, but that doesn't mean Ash can't
06:24evolve his other Pokémon to make them stronger.
06:26While many people who play the video games tend to evolve their Pokémon pretty quickly,
06:31Ash doesn't seem to mind keeping his companions in their smaller, less powerful forms.
06:35In the Pokémon universe, every species has an extremely rare color variant known as a
06:40shiny form.
06:41For instance, a shiny Gyarados is mostly red instead of its usual blue color, while a shiny
06:46Psyduck is blue instead of yellow.
06:49Many shiny Pokémon are noticeably different from their normal forms, but some are pretty
06:53difficult to identify.
06:55Some particularly bad offenders like shiny Pikachu and shiny Gengar are just slightly
06:59different shades of their normal colors.
07:01Ash's one shiny Pokémon, Noctowl, falls somewhere between noticeable and subtle.
07:06At first glance, Ash's Noctowl can probably fool anyone who isn't familiar with the species,
07:11since the shiny variant and normal variant both have brown color schemes.
07:15However, when Ash's Noctowl is side-by-side with the normal Noctowl, the difference is
07:20clear.
07:21Ash's Noctowl has a much lighter body and copper-toned wings, while the normal Noctowl
07:25is darker overall.
07:27Since his 10th birthday, Ash has put all of his time and effort into becoming the best
07:31Pokémon trainer he can be.
07:33He focuses heavily on training and battling, and doesn't usually show much interest in
07:38anything that isn't related to Pokémon, including romance.
07:41But despite Ash's lack of interest and experience in the love department, a few characters have
07:46taken an interest in him.
07:48As Ash travels through the Kalos region, he's accompanied by his childhood friend, Serena.
07:52It's revealed in Episodes 6 and 7 of Pokémon the Series XY that the two of them met at
07:58camp, where Ash helped and encouraged Serena during a difficult time.
08:01Since then, he's held a special place in her heart, and has been a source of inspiration
08:05for her, although she hasn't exactly had the same effect on him.
08:09"...Hmm, can't say I remember you."
08:12Serena gives Ash a kiss before parting ways with him in one of the most unexpected moments
08:21in Pokémon anime history.
08:23In addition to Serena, Ash has won over the heart of one Pokémon in particular.
08:27Chikorita might have acted stubborn and tough in the beginning, but the grass-type Pokémon
08:31is ultimately swayed by the boy's kindness.
08:34She gives him a kiss on the cheek when he asks if she'd like to join him on his adventure.
08:38Once Chikorita evolves into Bayleef, she develops a habit of tackling her trainer out of love
08:43and excitement.
08:45The Pokémon anime wouldn't be nearly as exciting without some chaos, but it's not just Team
08:48Rocket that's causing trouble.
08:51Throughout Ash's many adventures, mischievous Pokémon seem to be naturally attracted to
08:55him.
08:56Whether these troublemakers are causing problems around town or just messing with their trainers,
09:00it's always up to Ash to handle it.
09:02There are two notable instances where Ash befriends and captures the leader of a villainous
09:06Pokémon group.
09:07The first is the infamous Squirtle Squad that initially helps Team Rocket kidnap Pikachu
09:12in Episode 12.
09:13After realizing who the bad guys really are, the squad works with Ash to defeat Team Rocket
09:18and puts out a forest fire.
09:20The leader joins Ash's team while the rest of the Squirtles become firefighters.
09:24A similar group of Sandile appears in Episode 3 of Pokémon Black and White, where they
09:28act out in an attempt to get everyone away from dangerous geysers.
09:32Ash eventually sees their good intentions, and they all work together to get everyone
09:36to safety.
09:37The leader of the pack follows Ash around in various episodes before officially being
09:41caught later on, after evolving into Crocoroc.
09:45Despite remaining 10 years old throughout the many seasons of the anime, Ash's appearance
09:49has definitely undergone some changes.
09:51Ash always looks the same throughout the Kanto and Johto eras, but alterations after that
09:56mostly come down to new clothes, hats, and an upgraded Pokédex.
10:00Those changes in appearance are fairly subtle up until the series' Pokémon Sun and Moon,
10:04when Ash arrives in the Alola region, more than just his outfit gets a makeover.
10:09There's a huge shift in art style, which results in Ash having an overall younger appearance.
10:14He even ditches the fingerless gloves, previously considered a key part of his outfit.
10:18Even in Pokémon Journeys, Ash gets bigger irises in his eyes to make him look even more
10:23youthful.
10:24Perhaps the only physical features that always stay the same for Ash are the zigzag markings
10:28on his cheeks, that look like Pikachu's lightning bolts.
10:32After traveling through region after region, Ash finally snags his first championship title
10:36in the Manalo Conference of the Alola region.
10:39In episodes 46 and 47 of Pokémon the series' Sun and Moon Ultra Legends, Ash's final battle
10:45against his rival Gladion starts out pretty balanced.
10:49Ash's Melmetal is taken down by Gladion's Silvally, who is then knocked out by Pikachu.
10:54After that, Pikachu faces down Gladion's Zoroark, and they both use their Z-moves to take each
10:59other out.
11:00This leaves Gladion and Ash with just one Pokémon each.
11:03Coincidence or not, they both put their faith in their two Lycanroc.
11:07At first, it doesn't look good for Ash's Lycanroc as it struggles to deal with the other Lycanroc's
11:11counterattack.
11:12But thankfully, Ash comes up with an unconventional strategy to secure the victory.
11:17Now use counter against counter!
11:20No way!
11:21This gives Ash's Lycanroc enough momentum to deal the final blow.
11:24While it's exciting to watch Ash's strategy play out, the win isn't as satisfying as it
11:29could have been.
11:30In the video games, a counter cannot actually be counted itself, making Ash's use of it
11:34not feel totally legit.
11:36This isn't the only time the anime breaks the rules that the video games have established,
11:40and it's a shame that it happens in the all-important battle that crowns Ash as the new champion.
11:46While Ash may not have the best track record when it comes to putting together a solid
11:49team of six, his squad in Pokémon Master Journeys is undeniably powerful, featuring
11:54Pikachu, Lucario, Gengar, Dragonite, Dracovish, and Sirfetch'd.
12:00Surprisingly, all these Pokémon are in their final evolutions with the exception of Pikachu.
12:05In this case, it works out for Pikachu, as the electric mouse has a special Gigantamax
12:09form that Raichu doesn't.
12:11Aside from Pikachu, Ash has two of the strongest Pokémon from Kanto in his corner, Gengar
12:16and Dragonite.
12:17Gengar is a speedy glass cannon and another potential Gigantamax option, while Dragonite
12:22is a bulky and reliable flying dragon.
12:25Ash also has a great Mega Evolution in Lucario.
12:28This Lucario has shown the most growth on the team by starting out as an egg in Ash's
12:32care, training hard as a little Riolu, and evolving into a total powerhouse.
12:37The gala duo Dracovish and Sirfetch'd should not be underestimated, either, despite their
12:41somewhat silly designs.
