00:00Where did you go to law school?
00:02Uh, Berkeley.
00:04Welcome to Miss Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the college disciplines that lead to the best career opportunities.
00:12Now, Mr. Evil.
00:14Dr. Evil. I didn't spend six years in evil medical school to be called Mr. Thank-You-Very-Much.
00:22Number 20. Physics.
00:24If you have a passion for not just science, but how matter interacts with energy and time,
00:28then this path is for you.
00:30I was going to do them later.
00:31You haven't even looked at them.
00:32No.
00:33Stephen, are you aware that you've voluntarily embarked upon a PhD in physics
00:37at the most prestigious college in England?
00:39Yes.
00:40Although it may seem ultra-specific, there are several different opportunities for those who choose to pursue physics.
00:46After securing at least an undergraduate degree, the possibilities are practically limitless,
00:51and range from air traffic control to academia.
00:54Please welcome onto the stage my esteemed colleague, my dear friend, Professor Hawking.
01:05Many physicists work directly in research, studying everything from microscopic particles to the cosmologically vast.
01:11Are black holes really wormholes? Or are wormholes really black holes?
01:16Eh? Eh?
01:17Hashtag science.
01:19We know black holes exist. We can see evidence for them out there.
01:23There are also several smaller sub-fields catered to specific findings,
01:27giving new graduates plenty of options to choose from and work towards.
01:31No matter what route is taken, a six-figure salary is a typical benchmark for physicists,
01:36making the extensive coursework in college worth it.
01:42With the internet allowing seemingly anybody to garner a wide audience,
01:46this job suddenly has new relevance.
01:48I'm unclear about what it is exactly you do.
01:50Excellent question. What a publicist does is…
01:52I don't know. I was talking to George Michael.
01:54When did you get a job?
01:56At the banana stand.
01:58Oh, duh! I thought you meant like a plumber or something, and I was like, when did that happen?
02:04While it may not be as glamorous or fast-paced as it's usually portrayed in the media,
02:09the life of someone in public relations can still be filled with excitement.
02:13You want the truth?
02:14Mm-hmm.
02:15Your last Golden Globe dress was a disaster.
02:20Thank you. That's what I thought, but all these queens kept telling me it was fierce.
02:24Employees work directly with large companies or individuals,
02:28deciding what information is released to the greater public
02:31and helping their clients maintain a favorable image,
02:33whether it's helping a celebrity gain exposure or writing speeches for those in leadership roles.
02:39PR agents are often the glue holding everything together.
02:42I'm working on the launch of a restaurant, so I need to create a media pitch for that
02:47as well as, you know, work on the press release, make sure that all the menus,
02:50we have all the menus and photos, so I'll be spending the first part of my morning on that.
02:55That said, media literacy and strong writing skills are just two requirements for this position,
03:00as your words could mean life or death for someone else's career.
03:04Number 18, mathematics.
03:06You may think that the only way to translate a love of numbers into a full-time job
03:10is through education or finance,
03:12but there are several other areas that rely on specific mathematical techniques.
03:16Sorry. What are you doing? Sorry.
03:19Students start out learning a wide array of topics
03:22and gradually begin to study more specialized aspects as they advance into their graduate studies.
03:28Academia is one of the more popular choices,
03:31but they can also choose to pursue other avenues such as statistics or financial analysis.
03:37Okay, people who run ball clubs, they think in terms of buying players.
03:42Your goal shouldn't be to buy players. Your goal should be to buy wins.
03:47There are even several prizes available for mathematicians to win
03:51once they become prominent in their area of study, providing constant motivation for progress.
03:56With all of the lucrative choices available,
03:58a diploma in this field can potentially help set you up for life.
04:02Math opens up doors to support a whole range of careers
04:05and even navigate the quantitative challenges we encounter in daily life.
04:0917. Business Information Technology
04:12It may be a stereotypically thankless role,
04:14but those who work it are some of the most important staff on payroll.
04:18Hello, IT. Have you tried turning it off and on again?
04:25Okay, well, the button on the side, is it glowing?
04:30Yeah, you need to turn it on.
04:32All it takes is a bachelor's degree and a large amount of patience.
04:35Yeah, I tried to install it myself, but you guys have these things so password protected.
04:41That just means you have to enter your password.
04:44Consultants will often work with companies to both help employees with technological issues
04:49and ensures the business achieves the goals they've set,
04:52meaning they're involved at a macro and micro level.
04:55What it may lack in gratitude, it certainly makes up for in pay.
04:59Depending on the sector you work in, one could easily pull in around $100,000 a year.
05:04It usually pays and has more benefits, like medical and stock options and 401ks.
05:11With technology booming more than ever, the amount of positions is constantly growing,
05:15making it the perfect vocational path for a new graduate.
05:1816. Economics
05:20Money is one of, if not the biggest driving forces in the world,
05:24so it makes sense that there's a whole field dedicated to understanding it.
05:28Okay, so here's how a synthetic CDO works.
05:31Let's say I bet $10 million on a blackjack hand.
05:34$10 million because this hand is meant to represent a single mortgage bond.
05:39Economists utilise various mathematical techniques to help better understand
05:44the constant financial ebb and flow of the system.
05:48No one is paying attention because the banks are too busy getting paid obscene fees to sell these bonds.
05:55But wait, you are the bank. You work for the bank. I bet your margins are pretty nice and fat.
06:00The curriculum can be intense, with students having to learn everything on a macro and micro level,
06:05along with having to take extra math and social science classes.
06:09However, once the work is done, the world is their oyster.
06:12Opportunities range from working for the National Treasury
06:15to serving as a consultant for a local business.
06:18The salary ranges depending on how one utilises what they learned,
06:21but even on the lower end, candidates can earn around $60,000 yearly.
06:26I like to see economics as a subject which tries to help you understand the world,
06:30the people in it, the institutions, and how we can all work together to produce things efficiently,
06:36and in most cases try to achieve equity and just general social well-being.
06:41While it's incredibly rewarding, it's definitely not without its challenges.
06:46Why do I stand up here? Anybody?
06:48To feel taller.
06:49No!
06:50If you have a love for learning and a desire to help others do the same,
06:54then education may be the perfect choice for you.
06:57Besides teaching itself, educators also create lesson plans
07:00and keep track of every pupil's progress.
07:03Okay, so if the store has ten potatoes, right, and you take away two of them,
07:08how many potatoes would the store have left?
07:11I don't like potatoes.
07:12Let's not focus on that part of it.
07:14Given its importance, there are several requirements that need to be met.
07:18Many educators are required to continue taking classes post-graduation
07:21and must work as a student teacher before being placed at a school.
07:25With a vast array of courses and grade levels to teach,
07:28the opportunities are seemingly endless.
07:30Because the world is constantly changing and because education and curriculum
07:35should be changing as well and adapting to new information that may come out,
07:40I love that it creates us to be lifelong learners.
07:45While the pay isn't the most ideal, a tenured educator is at the very least heavily protected.
07:50Ensuring consistent employment throughout their career.
07:5314. Communications
07:55While it may appear to be a broad area of study,
07:58there are plenty of specific options within the greater communications umbrella
08:02that can be rewarding both mentally and financially.
08:04I'm going back to school.
08:07Yeah?
08:08I've always wanted to study communications. I'm good with people.
08:12That's good.
08:13On a macro level, communication deals with different patterns of human behaviour.
08:17This makes it applicable to multiple industries,
08:20ranging from media work like journalism and broadcasting
08:23to more technical institutions such as the military and medical field.
08:27I need you to give a speech at the National Cardiology Conference next week.
08:31I don't do speeches. I'm shy.
08:33Given how many other areas of study it intersects with,
08:36those interested in pursuing it need to be well-versed in humanities,
08:40politics, psychology, and marketing.
08:43This is a fantastic major for students with interdisciplinary interests.
08:48Your coursework will pull from a variety of academic fields.
08:51As broad as it is, it's a great choice for those who want to follow their aspirations
08:56while also having a guaranteed income.
08:5813. Mechanical Engineering
09:01It's no secret that engineering is one of the better majors to choose from,
09:04at least from a career standpoint.
09:06Mechanical engineering is no different.
09:08Speaking modestly, I'm the best mechanical engineer in this country.
09:11But I don't know what's inside this thing or how it works.
09:14Those who choose this profession are heavily involved
09:17in every process of creating various devices,
09:20from research all the way down to the final testing.
09:23The hands-on profession isn't easy to break into.
09:25Candidates have to complete and pass several exams
09:28and work four years in the field before receiving an official license.
09:32The first page of the exam asks us to evaluate a double integral
09:35given a region bounded by a circle
09:38whose equation is x squared plus y squared equals 16.
09:41Once the title is finally earned,
09:43they'll have access to a whole world of profitable positions.
09:46With that in mind, it's no wonder that it's one of the fastest-growing industries,
09:50with the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicting at least 10% growth in the next decade.
09:55You know, we as mechanical engineers can be one of those bright minds
09:58that the world is looking for to bring about a revolution in society
10:02and inspire future generations.
10:0412. Business Administration
10:07It should come as no surprise that this is one of the most gainful professions
10:10to work your way up in.
10:12Time to climb the corporate ladder.
10:14People in this field have a hand in just about every aspect of a company's choices,
10:18working with workers and higher-ups alike in order to help them reach their goals.
10:22There are several social skills that are non-negotiable for the position,
10:26including the ability to properly lead and communicate in competitive environments.
10:30Education is also highly valued,
10:32with options being made available from an undergraduate to a doctorate level.
10:36Every strategist should be able to explain to anybody
10:41why are we doing what we're doing.
10:43There's also a steady level of growth estimated,
10:45and multiple ways for the lessons to be applied in a job setting,
10:48making it easier to transition into an occupation post-secondary education.
10:53I want them to set high standards for themselves.
10:56I want them to be challenged.
10:59I want them to challenge others.
11:0111. Marketing
11:03In recent years, this has become one of the best majors to study.
11:06Advertising is based on one thing.
11:09Happiness.
11:11Given how many advertisements we see on a daily basis,
11:14from those on television to the ones we drive past,
11:16it makes sense that this would be a busy industry.
11:19Marketing seems easy, with many assuming it begins and ends with sales.
11:23However, they essentially have full control over how the population views a product.
11:27Marketing is the story you tell, who you're telling it to,
11:32it's the center of the universe.
11:34They influence the way people view everything from milk to government agencies.
11:38The salary reflects the job's relevance, with the median income alone
11:42coming in at just under $157,000 a year.
11:45With the main requirement being a four-year degree,
11:48it's become one of the most accessible disciplines to find success in.
11:51How to be successful in marketing in college is
11:54just make sure it's something you're actually interested in,
11:56and it'll just come easy to you.
11:5810. Software Engineering
12:00Considering the pace at which technology is moving,
12:02it makes sense that jobs in fields related to computers are growing rapidly.
12:06In fact, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics,
12:09more than 375,000 computer-related openings are expected each year.
12:14Graduates from software engineering programs can expect
12:17some of the highest starting salaries in the job market.
12:20In America, app developers and software developers
12:23can make an average of $107,000 per year.
12:26Speak to me!
12:28And to think parents used to say that sitting in front of computers all day
12:31was a waste of time.
12:359. Actuarial Mathematics
12:37If you have an aptitude for math,
12:39one of the most lucrative fields you can study in college is actuarial science.
12:43You may know they make hefty salaries,
12:45but do you know what actuaries actually do?
12:48Their main job is calculating risk
12:50using a variety of mathematical and statistical methods
12:53in order to apply the results in fields of insurance and finance.
12:57Sir, the possibility of successfully navigating an asteroid field
13:00is approximately 3,720 to 1!
13:02Never tell me the odds!
13:04You have to be committed to studying
13:06if you decide to pursue a career in actuarial mathematics,
13:09because in most countries, even once you've started your career,
13:12you have to continue to pass a series of exams.
13:15Based on prevailing sentiment of the market and banks and popular culture,
13:20yes, it's a foolish investment, but everyone's wrong.
13:258. Architecture
13:26Dude, lots of chicks think architects are hot.
13:28Being an architect is a career glamorised in the media,
13:31and while it is in fact a great field to enter into,
13:34it may be more difficult than you would imagine.
13:36There's a lot of math and science involved
13:38in creating the technical designs of a building,
13:40so you need more than an artistic eye in order to succeed.
13:43Pick one, and make sure you like it.
13:46There's gonna be 50,000 of these in your big hotshot building hotshot.
13:50You'll need a bachelor's degree in order to enter the field,
13:53but your career will be able to move further
13:55if you also acquire a master's degree.
13:58Median salaries in the United States
14:00come in at around roughly $93,000 a year,
14:03and jobs can include many travel perks.
14:057. Accounting
14:07If you have a degree in accounting,
14:09it's important to choose whether you wish to enter into the private realm
14:12or work in the public sector.
14:14Public accountants work with personal income taxes,
14:16as well as auditing and forensic accounting.
14:19As a private accountant, you'll work in a corporate environment
14:22for a company either individually or on a team
14:25in order to manage the business's finances.
14:34Salaries are similar in both fields,
14:36though the median is slightly higher in the private sector.
14:396. Civil Engineering
14:41While there are many types of engineering
14:43that can lead to illustrious careers,
14:45there are a few reasons why civil engineering is high on our list.
14:48Petroleum engineers may make the highest average salaries,
14:52but their job market is quite small,
14:54at about 21,000 in the United States.
14:57On the other hand,
14:58there are nearly 326,000 civil engineering jobs available.
15:02One of the biggest bonuses about getting a degree in civil engineering
15:06is that the range of jobs available to you is wide and varied.
15:09You can work in consulting, in construction, in government,
15:12and in industry.
15:145. Law
15:16It should come as no surprise that getting a law degree
15:18is not only prestigious,
15:20but it can lead to a fulfilling career.
15:26What some people don't know is that seeking out a degree in law
15:29does not necessarily have to lead to working as a lawyer.
15:32Conversely, having a law degree does not automatically make you a lawyer.
15:39In order to actually practice law,
15:41you have to pass a test,
15:43called the bar exam in the US and Canada.
15:51On top of that, bar exams vary by country,
15:53and even by state or province,
15:55although a few are transferable between certain states and provinces.
15:59So mostly, if you want to move and work elsewhere,
16:02you'll have to retake the test all over again.
16:114. Nursing
16:21While it may not be the most glamorous position,
16:24nursing is a field that is consistently in need of new additions.
16:27It also happens to be one of the jobs with the highest rates of job satisfaction.
16:31No matter how much technology progresses,
16:33nursing will always be one of the top jobs in any industry.
16:36Especially as the baby boomer generation ages,
16:39jobs are booming for every healthcare position.
16:42Registered nurses in the US also make very respectable salaries.
16:46Their average salary is $86,000
16:49while nurse practitioners make even more at an average of around $126,000.
17:023. Finance
17:03A degree in finance can help you work in either the public sector,
17:07the private sector, or even the world of non-profits.
17:10Whether your interest lies in personal finance,
17:12investment banking, insurance, or real estate management,
17:15the world is your oyster with a broad degree like this.
17:20I don't think like a bank. Big bank, small bank, I like to make money.
17:23You can enter the workforce with only a bachelor's degree,
17:26though most people consider an undergraduate finance degree
17:29as more of a first step on the path to further education.
17:32I went to the stock market today. I did a business.
17:35Getting an MBA, Masters of Business Administration,
17:39will open even more doors for you,
17:41on top of raising your salary expectations.
17:432. Medicine
17:45You know, a lot of people go to college for seven years.
17:48I know. They're called doctors.
17:50Everyone knows that becoming a doctor is one of the most
17:52prestigious career paths there is.
17:54They also know how hard it is to get into medical school
17:57and succeed with your studies.
17:58Come on, Rich. Being good at beginner pottery
18:00doesn't mean you can heal people.
18:02That's true, but my medical degree does.
18:04Medical students can incur some of the largest student debts
18:07due to the high cost of their studies,
18:09so getting a high-paying job and quickly is a necessity.
18:12Depending on the country you live in,
18:14and whether you choose to work privately or publicly,
18:16salaries for medical doctors can vary greatly.
18:19Even on the lower end, though,
18:20family practitioners make an annual average of almost $275,000.
18:26Cardiologists and orthopedic surgeons, however,
18:28can average upwards of $525,000 to $545,000 per year.

18:511. Computer Science
18:53Earlier, we talked about software engineering,
18:56which is actually a subset of the broader field of computer science.
19:00Those studying computer science have to be both logical and creative
19:03since they have to be both technically savvy and innovative.
19:06As of 2024, according to Glassdoor,
19:09the average base salary for a computer scientist is about $151,000,
19:14with many making more than that.
19:16As time goes on, this is a field that will undoubtedly continue to grow
19:20considering the direction that technology is taking.
19:23You didn't have seconds, you had three weeks.
19:26The universe was created in a third of that time.
19:29Well, someday you'll have to tell us how you did it.
19:31Has your major helped lead you to a good career?
19:33Let us know in the comments below.
19:35I don't know what you put in those erasers
19:37but they are practically white-out.
