Kemi Badenoch says, maternity pay in some cases is 'excessive'
Transcript
00:00Things like maternity pay, I mean we have one of the lowest rates in the OECD of maternity pay in this country.
00:05Changing that would probably help people make better decisions around family.
00:08Do you think we've got the right level of maternity pay at the moment?
00:11So, maternity pay varies depending on who you work for.
00:14But it is a function, whereas statutory maternity pay, it is a function of tax.
00:19Tax comes from people who are working.
00:21We're taking from one group of people and giving to another.
00:24This, in my view, is excessive.
00:26Businesses are closing.
00:28Businesses are not starting in the UK because they say that the burden of regulation is too high.
00:33So maternity pay is excessive?
00:35I think it's gone too far the other way in terms of general business regulation.
00:39We need to allow businesses, especially small businesses, to make more of their own.
