00:00This is my first time in South Africa.
00:12I am out of my comfort zone.
00:13Oh, a giraffe.
00:15They're freaking huge.
00:17Now it feels like I'm in Africa.
00:19On the windswept plains of Vimbay, South Africa, four unproven survivalists will attempt a
00:2521 day challenge.
00:26It's going to be a challenge to survive out here.
00:29Divided into two groups, one team of men and one team of women.
00:33We're going to be the bush babes.
00:35They will test their strength against mother nature for the first 10 days and then merge
00:40on day 11 for an all out survival of the sexes.
00:47Being partnered with a woman makes me nervous, but at the same time, women are stronger in
00:51the mind and that's what's needed out here.
00:53Time to show the rest of the world what we're made of.
00:56Do you have an animal out here that you're most afraid of?
01:01Out here?
01:02Leopards.
01:03Okay.
01:04Yeah, that's a good fear.
01:05Cheney and Rebel will be trekking three and a half miles south to an equally threatening
01:09environment where seven ton elephants come to drink and rocky outcroppings become the
01:15hunting ground for leopards.
01:27So why'd you want to do this?
01:28The challenge.
01:29Because I was in the Air Force for eight years.
01:31For what I've been doing as a career, like I've been teaching people this stuff.
01:35Yeah, I've practiced it, but never anything like this.
01:39Yeah.
01:40Oh, ow.
01:41Damn.
01:42I want to prove girls are tough.
01:44We're just as strong as men.
01:46So deep down, I'm secretly hoping that the women outperform the men, just because women
01:50are tough and the world needs to see that.
01:53But what about you?
01:54I'm curious to know why you're here.
01:56My husband was in the Army.
01:57Okay.
01:58He did a year in Afghanistan.
01:59When he came home, he was pretty messed up.
02:03It's probably going to be the closest chance to-
02:05Seeing what he went through?
02:06Yeah.
02:07Oh, that's a very good reason.
02:09Yeah.
02:11That's water.
02:12Oh, man.
02:13We're such good navigators.
02:14Wow.
02:15That's a nice water source.
02:16Yeah, man.
02:17I'm digging it.
02:18Obviously, we don't want to be too close.
02:19At the water source, yeah.
02:20Yep.
02:21Especially at night.
02:22It's just going to be colder.
02:23Everything tramples through here.
02:24Yep.
02:25I'm hoping to not come face to face with anything that eats meat out here.
02:26Because by the time I see them, it's too late.
02:27See those rocks?
02:28Yeah.
02:29That's where I would like to go.
02:30Yeah.
02:31Oh, this would be nice to be a little bit higher, so we don't have to worry about getting
02:32trampled in the middle of the night.
02:34Yeah.
02:35Oh, this looks good.
02:36Leopards can't jump on us here.
02:37I think this will work.
02:38This is perfect.
02:39We can just bird nest ourselves in here.
02:40Wow, windy it is.
02:41This would be really fun.
02:42Yeah.
02:43I'm going to do it.
02:44I'm going to do it.
02:45I'm going to do it.
02:46We're going to build a shelter.
02:47We're going to build a shelter.
02:48We're going to build a shelter.
02:49Can I keep going?
02:50I'm going to keep going.
02:51We're going to build a shelter.
02:52I'm going to build a shelter.
02:53I think this will work.
02:54Yeah.
02:54This is perfect.
02:56We can just, like, bird nest ourselves in here.
02:59How windy it is, it's going to be hard to get a fire going.
03:02Oh, we'll get it going.
03:05We'll just need the coal.
03:09And we need flames.
03:11We got flames!
03:12Yes.
03:13It's going to be warm in here tonight.
03:15We'll get this boiling.
03:16And then we need to start finding sharp-
03:19Yeah, we need to start for the boma.
03:21So we are building our shelter here
03:23because it's a natural rock formation
03:24with great overhead cover.
03:28Having a good boma is a matter of life or death.
03:32Big, thorny, massive wall to keep out
03:36every sort of predator imaginable.
03:39Now that is a fire.
03:41We won't be cold, that's for sure.
03:44For tonight, the plan is to stay out
03:46of the way of anything that might be lurking around.
03:50You know, keep the fire going, keep warm,
03:51and hopefully we'll be able to get some sleep.
03:53Oh, God, it is so warm in here.
03:56Wonder how the boys are doing right now.
04:05It's dark outside in our little cave.
04:10It's OK, because we have fire.
04:12Man, I am incredibly happy.
04:15This is the Taj Mahal of bomas.
04:19Yeah.
04:27I slept surprisingly well.
04:29Yeah, I slept really good, actually.
04:31All things considered.
04:33I really want to get down to this pond
04:35because it is our best chance for getting
04:37something of sustenance.
04:40I brought my glasses so I can see so much better with these
04:43on, so I'll be able to see, like, super, like, eagle-eyes.
04:50Yeah, look at these tracks, how fresh they are.
04:54Yeah, I didn't see those yesterday.
04:56One thing we got to look out for is
04:57when we go to the water source, you know,
04:59we always want to watch out for some of the larger animals.
05:03I know there's leopards around here.
05:05I know there's lions around here.
05:06I know there's elephants around here.
05:08So literally everything is going to have
05:10to use this one water source.
05:13And that means it's dangerous.
05:19So it's probably another, if I had to guess, 80 yards.
05:24Yeah.
05:25So start, like, really paying attention.
05:29Oh, you see?
05:29I can see them.
05:31Baboons.
05:33There's a couple baboons and a couple deer.
05:36Oh, there it is.
05:38No, no, no.
05:39Oh, my God.
05:40Oh, my God.
05:41Oh, my God.
05:41Oh, my God.
05:42Oh, my God.
05:43Oh, my God.
05:44Oh, my God.
05:45Oh, my God.
05:45Oh, my God.
05:46Oh, my God.
05:47Oh, my God.
05:48Oh, my God.
05:50Seeing all these animals, I mean, it is really cool.
05:53But that's not my first thought.
05:54My first thought is, oh, s**t, because they're
05:57big and they're dangerous.
06:04If we get a stampede going or anybody coming at us,
06:08we don't expect to go right there, get on that log.
06:12Oh, hello.
06:15What could we find?
06:16It's a gecko.
06:17Come on, you little bastard.
06:19Sweet.
06:20Ha-ha.
06:22Bait.
06:26There are fish in there.
06:26They're jumping.
06:27They're getting something off the surface.
06:29So my plan is to get a line out with a hook
06:32with the lizard head on it and kind of just stand there
06:35and wait and see if anything comes by to bite it.
06:45Oh, they're right there.
06:46I don't know what's in here, but I'm
06:47going to get these hooks set up.
06:49Ow.
06:50Goof.
06:51Oh.
06:53Damn.
06:54I got the hook in my finger.
06:57It's in there pretty good.
06:58I was trying to tighten my knot and the thing slipped.
07:01It's in there pretty deep, too.
07:04That barb is just catching on all my thumb meat.
07:08So stupid.
07:10So gross.
07:12I just feel like I'm going to be sick.
07:14I can't get it out.
07:17It's nerve-wracking that this happened on day two.
07:20It's just the barb.
07:21I can't pull it out.
07:24So we're going to need to cut the hook.
07:27And fish it out?
07:28Damn.
07:29Chini managed to embed a barbed fishing hook really
07:33deeply into her thumb.
07:34Oh, man.
07:36So we're going to cut it, and then we're
07:37going to pull the whole hook through your finger.
07:40You understand?
07:41Oh, I understand.
07:42Yeah.
07:42It's in there deep.
07:43Yeah.
07:45The only option that I had was to cut the fishing hook itself
07:49and feed the entire hook through the rest of her thumb.
07:52Ow.
07:54Please, God, get this thing out of my thumb.
07:56It's coming.
07:59OK.
08:00Big one, huh?
08:02So deep breath.
08:03Let's get a proper grip, and then we just do it one time.
08:06OK?
08:07One, two, three.
08:08Oh.
08:09Ooh.
08:10Yeah.
08:12Success.
08:13OK.
08:14I'm not going to cover it, because it's
08:16going to be better open, because it's going to swell.
08:19OK.
08:20Try and keep it as clean as you possibly can.
08:22Any injury, there's always an associated
08:25danger of infection.
08:26But being in this environment, it is multiplied.
08:30Thanks, Doc.
08:31Good luck.
08:32Oh, thank you.
08:33Well, that was fun, huh?
08:34Yeah.
08:35I have to keep this thing as clean as possible,
08:37at least for like a day or two to heal.
08:39Take it easy the rest of the day.
08:41I'm going to be much more careful out here.
08:44I'm just not used to being in an environment
08:45that is just so dangerous.
08:56All right.
08:57Day three.
08:58Rebel and I had gathered some of the mopani leaves,
09:01because if you lay them out in the sun,
09:03and then you boil them in a pot of water, you could eat them.
09:07We just needed to put something in our stomachs,
09:09because it's been about three days.
09:11We haven't had anything but water.
09:13And I could feel it this morning,
09:15starting to catch up to me.
09:16Better than nothing.
09:18All right, let's go.
09:21I'm getting hungry, though.
09:22I can feel it.
09:23Yeah, for sure.
09:24I felt it this morning.
09:30Ow.
09:31Oh, that's a terrapin.
09:38Look what I caught.
09:40Oh, no.
09:41Yeah.
09:42I cannot believe this.
09:44No, I saw a shell, and he wasn't really moving.
09:46So I was like, let me just reach down there and grab him.
09:49Oh, he stinks.
09:50Finding the terrapin is not something
09:52I'd ever think of as food.
09:54But, you know, when you're out here, you just got to do it.
09:57I just want to kill him the fastest way possible.
10:01God, he's strong.
10:03I'm trying to pry this terrapin's shell open.
10:06And the more I pry, the tighter it gets.
10:09And the more I pry, the tighter it squeezes.
10:11And I mean, this thing has got a grip.
10:13The serrated-hinged terrapin gets its name
10:16from a hinged shell that makes it difficult to pry open.
10:20I can't get his head out.
10:21Yeah, the best way would be to chop off his head
10:23or to stab him in the head.
10:24The only way to kill this thing is
10:26to do it incredibly brutally.
10:28And I don't want to do that.
10:30I think we should leave him alone.
10:32He might be in love today, dude.
10:34I was going to find a better way to kill him.
10:36Yeah.
10:37Even in a survival situation like this,
10:39I was more than willing to pass it up
10:41because it doesn't deserve it.
10:43And I wouldn't feel right eating it afterwards.
