Young American Abby Stevens is searching for her fiancé Doug. She hopes to find him visiting Alan Smerdon at an artists' commune in the English countryside. Alan is not only Doug's close school friend, but a distant cousin to Abby. However, Alan and the other artists claim Doug has never been to their village. Nevertheless, Abby shares a psychic bond with Doug, and is certain the visions she is receiving are connected to the commune and that Doug may be in danger.

00:03:42I'll have it all in five
00:04:05all right ma'am? oh yeah that's fine thank you. what do I owe you?
00:04:59hello? anyone around?
00:05:08hello?
00:05:16hello?
00:05:28frightened you did I? stay that way. fear is one of those fleeting expressions. it's hard to capture.
00:05:49where is everybody? in town. it's Friday. collect allowance from home day. lucky for some, I'm unlucky. pick my loot where I can find it.
00:06:05you got a good face. fear is hard to capture. so you go around frightening people? only the pretty ones.
00:06:16where's Alan? Alan? yes, Alan Smerton. is he here? you know him? slightly. I knew him as a kid.
00:06:23well hello there. well what have we got here? must be one of the help the hippie help himself people.
00:06:35Al? don't you remember me? Abigail Carson. I'm a half-cousin. well honey I just love to have you as my half-cousin.
00:06:44or even a whole one. but I'm afraid you got the wrong man. there's the man you want.
00:06:49say baby, a blast from the past. I wouldn't have recognized you. but then it must be all 15 years.
00:06:58put him out of his misery. she's your half-cousin. uncle Jeff's daughter. oh come on I'm Abby. cousin Abby? well this is a surprise.
00:07:12yes it was meant to be. 15 years huh? close on. you didn't recognize me. I got more handsome I guess. I'd have gotten around to you.
00:07:21yeah you're definitely the uncle Jeff's daughter. the same look. it's great to see you Abby. come on let's drink to that.
00:07:29what'll it be? scotch and the rocks? scotch can do but no rocks. we live a simple life there Abby. it doesn't run to a freezer.
00:07:37well scotch and no rocks then. if it helps I've learned that no true Scotsman would ever ice his national drink. cheers. cheers.
00:07:49this used to be an English pub. you really have gone native haven't you? I guess so. turned you back in the States?
00:07:57I didn't say that. the US of A is still home to me. turned you back on your family then? Abby I've been busy.
00:08:05too busy to write? your mother worries about you terribly. well I write when I can. well you could call her sometimes.
00:08:13I've tried never made the connection. and when she calls you you're never here. I told you I'm busy.
00:08:21her health doesn't improve. she hardly ever leaves her bed now. well you can tell her I'm fine can't you? an eyewitness.
00:08:30you really should write. she says it's only the bank statements keeps her in touch sometimes. but as long as you keep drawing your allowance she knows you're still alive.
00:08:40I'll tell you what. I'll write her a long long letter and you can take it back with you. maybe a painting too. she'd like that.
00:08:50when will she get it? what? the letter. how long before you go back? oh a couple of weeks. quick flip around Europe? I've already done that. England's my last stop.
00:09:02I promised your mother I'd look you up. how glad you did. thanks. but don't stay around long enough to make me homesick. oh no fear of that.
00:09:12so how long are you figuring on staying? just a few days. well I tell you what there's a pretty good hotel about 15 miles away I could call.
00:09:22oh but I'd like to stay here. really get into the country could I? here? yes. well there must be room for me somewhere as far as I can see you have the whole village.
00:09:35but Abby this isn't your kind of place. try me.
00:09:42Alan. it worked. the firing worked. I've done it at last. pure copper red. look.
00:09:57that's fantastic. just fantastic. it's beautiful. may I see? oh girl this is my half-cousin Abby Carson from the States. she's gonna be staying with us for a while.
00:10:14hello. come on Abby I'll show you your room but I warn you palatial it ain't.
00:10:24well this is it. not much but it's home. it's lovely. see you later. thank you.
00:10:54thank you.
00:11:24you better be careful. your half-cousin Abby might not approve.
00:13:24you're welcome.
00:13:54you keep doing that and fear won't be a fleeting expression. it'll be permanently etched on my face. sorry I didn't mean to scare you. I walk soft. yes well you darn well did.
00:14:18you're right. I'm carving a tableau. Joan of Arc. you're Joan. just before she went to the stake.
00:14:48we've made our own little world here. it's not perfect but it suits me. you don't miss all you have. what did I have? material things. fancy clothes. flash cars. or is there a miss?
00:15:10on the other hand here you can discover things. about life. about yourself. take Frank for instance. till a couple of years ago he was a mechanic. a garage hand working on other people's status symbols.
00:15:28then he discovered there was more in his hands. found he could carve. sculpt. changed his whole outlook. yeah I used to be edgy too. always spoil him away in and out of fights. aggressive. his hands have done a deal of harm in the time.
00:15:50since I started carving I haven't lost my temper in quite a while have I? what about you? much the same as Alan. a rich family full of materialistic values and yet no real ones. I turn my back on them. completely. how do you mean?
00:16:12well Al hasn't turned right away has he? he still accepts money from his family. well why not? they're rich they can afford it. well mine can too. we still have to eat. and buy materials. we take money and convert it into something more worthwhile. and that doesn't conflict with my philosophy.
00:16:38you make it sound all so convincing. you might even convert me into staying on. well I don't think you'd fit in here Abby. maybe you're right. takes a special sort of dedication I guess.
00:16:54what did Doug make of it? Doug? yes Douglas Sadler. you went to high school together. oh sure. but how do you mean what did he make of it? when he came here. he's never been here. what are you covering for him? Abby you're not making sense. did you ever meet a Douglas Sadler? no.
00:17:22what made you think he had been here? he told me. how could he tell you he was never here? it was two months ago. this is gonna sound crazy. it sure does. we didn't notice it until we started going steady together at college. that's when it happened. what happened? we found we had this thing between us. a psychic link telepathy call it whatever you want.
00:17:52the deeper we fell in love the stronger it got. he'd be kept working late and I'd know. my car had run out of gas in the middle of nowhere and he knew. he'd come out to help me. it got so we didn't have to call each other up anymore. hey western union have better watch out. let her finish.
00:18:14well a few months ago we discussed marriage. I wanted to marry him. I still do. Doug wasn't so sure. he decided on a trip to Europe the full tour but he was really coming here to see you. he always admired you while you know that. envied you for having the courage to go your own way.
00:18:35well I agreed to let him come. I had to. it was either that or lose him. two months ago he arrived in England and that's the last I heard of him. that's the last anybody's heard of him. until he told me about coming here. but I keep telling you he didn't come here. I got this message. it was confused. maybe distance affects that kind of thing. I don't know. but it was about you and it was about this place. as soon as I saw it I knew. he must have been here.
00:19:01no. he's coming here. did you consider that? no. no I didn't and of course you're right that has to be it. maybe he's coming and he wants me to be here to meet him. it's a possibility. it's jerk. what's gotten into you frank subscribing to a wild idea like that?
00:19:19every idea is wild at first. the world is round. the stars aren't just holes in the sky. a man will stand on the moon. I was right about you. St. John. voices.
00:19:49hurry!
00:20:19come on.
00:20:49Abby.
00:22:13Abby.
00:22:43hello. can I speak to Abby please?
00:23:11oh yes. yeah. I'll get her. hang on. Abby. Abby. yeah? hello. there's a phone call for you.
00:23:24hello. hello. is Janet. Jan did you find him? I went to Rome and Paris and all the other places we thought he might be. but he wasn't there. as far as I can make out he never was there. Abby? he's still there?
00:23:46yes but listen Jan I think I might have got it wrong. Doug hasn't been here yet either so he must be coming. it's possible. and I think I know when. Thursday it's the 14th. sorry I don't understand. the 14th is Al's birthday. you told me back at school they never missed a birthday together remember? well wouldn't it be just like Doug to turn up then? yes.
00:24:05listen can you get down here to make it a double surprise? you've got the address? yeah I'll try. I'm due to fly back on Thursday night. but if I can swap flights. okay I'll try. please do. and call me if you think you can make it okay? okay. okay bye Janet.
00:24:23morning. morning. I need to get into town to the bank. is there any transportation around here? why sure Frank's got an old truck. we all use it from time to time. well who's just the big car? a what? I saw it last night. a big ghost of a car like a Rolls Royce or something. it's probably a tourist. they come out here occasionally to look at us. they think it's better than the zoo. that's funny. I could have sworn I heard it stop right here in the village. lots of rich people around here. we don't sport Rolls Royces. not any longer.
00:24:52so it's Frank's truck.
00:24:54his birthday huh? yes. we have time for me to stop and buy him something don't we? all the time in the world.
00:25:25his birthday. well he never mentioned it. probably forgotten. you know how men are. I hope so. I'll have to get him something too. you think this will do?
00:25:45it's beautiful. quite remarkable. someone with such a bad bad temper could carve something as gentle as this. it's just people who get me Maude.
00:26:15good morning.
00:26:45I'd like to cash some travelers checks please. certainly madam. sorry for a moment I thought you were one of the... I'm sorry it was the accent. I mistook you for one of the artistic community.
00:26:59a village a few miles away. well it's a matter of... rather an odd group of people actually. sorry I don't think I understand. what he means is he thinks they're sponges. sponges? bloodsuckers, leeches, parasites living off their folks back home. isn't that right?
00:27:16would you please sign this one too madam? how would you like this? she'd like it quickly. thank you madam. cute little place this isn't it? mm-hmm has its charms. there we are.
00:27:32yeah that's fine thank you. been a pleasure. good day.
00:27:49people do get you awful mad don't they? yeah his kind. no life moves just too fast for people around here. well let them fall off. you want the shops? oh yeah that'd be fine.
00:28:49could we take a look over there?
00:29:49what's wrong? I don't know. something about those trees. their elm trees. all doomed I'm afraid. why? Dutch elm disease. it's a sort of virus. they'll all die.
00:30:09you coming?
00:30:26now what's wrong? nothing. I just thought I heard somebody.
00:30:38five trees and I'd imagine there'd be six. there were six until about a year ago there were six trees. they took one down it was dead. they said it was dangerous. but there were six trees.
00:31:08sorry she's out. who's calling? an old friend, Janet.
00:31:35Just a moment, I think she's back.
00:31:37Abby!
00:31:38Yeah?
00:31:39Telephone call.
00:31:40Oh.
00:31:44Who is it?
00:31:45An old friend, Janet.
00:31:48Jan?
00:31:49You've just given the game away.
00:31:51How did I do that?
00:31:52Because he answered the phone, Al.
00:31:54Look, I still don't know if I can make it on Thursday.
00:31:57I won't know till the last minute.
00:31:59But if I am coming, I'll be on the 5.30 train, okay?
00:32:02Uh-huh.
00:32:03Now don't meet me, I'll get a cab.
00:32:04Okay, fine.
00:32:05Hey, you sure that was Al on the phone?
00:32:07He didn't sound like his voice.
00:32:09Well, it was him.
00:32:11And you've ruined our big surprise.
00:32:13Sorry, Abby.
00:32:14I'll see you Thursday then.
00:32:16I should be there about 6 o'clock, okay?
00:32:18Okay, fine.
00:32:19Bye.
00:32:22It was supposed to be a surprise, just bad luck you had to answer.
00:32:25How come?
00:32:26Well, it was Janet.
00:32:27You remember Doug's sister?
00:32:29She's here in England.
00:32:30And I think you might be seeing her soon.
00:32:32Oh, that's great.
00:32:33When?
00:32:34Well, Thursday, of course.
00:32:35It would have to be Thursday if she can make it.
00:32:37Thursday.
00:32:38And I think that Doug might be here too.
00:32:40Oh, that's great.
00:32:52Abby.
00:32:56It's my birthday Thursday.
00:32:58You thought I'd forgotten.
00:32:59It's my birthday.
00:33:03What's wrong?
00:33:06Yes, it's your birthday on Thursday.
00:33:10There really is something wrong, isn't there?
00:33:16What is it?
00:33:19For a moment I had the strongest feeling that Doug was here.
00:33:22Here?
00:33:27Here in the house.
00:33:33Here in the house.
00:34:03Here in the house.
00:34:30Abby.
00:34:33Abby.
00:34:47Abby.
00:34:48Abby.
00:35:01Abby.
00:35:03Doug?
00:35:13Abby.
00:35:18Abby.
00:35:35Abby.
00:35:48Abby.
00:36:16Abby.
00:36:18Abby.
00:36:39Abby.
00:36:48Abby.
00:36:58Abby.
00:37:00What on earth are you doing down here?
00:37:05Abby.
00:37:19Abby.
00:37:30Abby.
00:37:35Abby.
00:37:49Abby.
00:37:58We've been...
00:37:59We've been looking all over for you.
00:38:04You okay?
00:38:08Why'd you run off?
00:38:09Why here?
00:38:11He needs me.
00:38:14Doug needs me.
00:38:16Doug needs me.
00:38:36How are you feeling now, Abby?
00:38:38Fine.
00:38:39That was a crazy thing to do.
00:38:41You know, you were lucky you didn't get pneumonia.
00:38:43Any idea why?
00:38:45I just needed to be alone for a while.
00:38:47Oh, I know that feeling.
00:38:49You know, sometimes I just take off anywhere to be alone.
00:38:54Well, how long have you known Al?
00:38:57Well, since I came here.
00:38:59And how well do you?
00:39:01What time did he say Janet was arriving?
00:39:03Oh, the 5.30 train, if she can make it.
00:39:05Where's Frank?
00:39:06I don't know, why?
00:39:07I asked him to rustle up some champagne.
00:39:09Oh, Al!
00:39:10Smoking!
00:39:11No, I know bourgeois taste, but it's my birthday.
00:39:13And what's a birthday without champagne?
00:39:15Bourgeois or not, I like it.
00:39:17Oh, I like it too.
00:40:41Abby?
00:41:11Abby?
00:41:12Abby?
00:41:41I almost had a haircut for this occasion, almost!
00:42:03Hey, Al!
00:42:04It's my birthday.
00:42:05No champagne?
00:42:06Ah, yes, there is.
00:42:07I'm sorry I'm late.
00:42:09What, that truck of yours break down again?
00:42:12That truck of mine never breaks down.
00:42:14May not look much from the outside, but the mechanics, perfect.
00:42:17I tend them every week, loving care.
00:42:19Loving is right.
00:42:20If ever Frank has a wild affair, it'll be with an engine.
00:42:23He's the only man I know who can make oil and grease in centuries.
00:42:26He's not the only man I know, though.
00:42:33I was marking out my carving.
00:42:36St. Joan.
00:42:39It's coming along fine.
00:42:42Do you want me to carve you out a birthday party face, eh?
00:42:44Mouth all turned up at the corners, laughing eyes.
00:42:47I know, Frank.
00:42:48You look as though you're waiting for a funeral.
00:42:50Well, it could be the happiest day of your life.
00:42:53Well, it's in the horoscope, written in the wind, you said so yourself.
00:42:57Dougie, whatever his name is, will probably turn up today.
00:43:00Look, Al.
00:43:03Dougie isn't going to turn up.
00:43:05Not ever.
00:43:07Oh, come on now.
00:43:08How can you possibly know that for sure?
00:43:11I just do, I know.
00:43:12That's all.
00:43:14How do you know?
00:43:15I can feel it.
00:43:16Feelings.
00:43:18I can see it.
00:43:20I see Doug and fire.
00:43:22Fire?
00:43:23I've brainwashed you.
00:43:24My Joan of Arc stuff is getting to you.
00:43:27Flames.
00:43:29Flames leaping higher and higher.
00:43:31Ooh.
00:43:32I won't need so much wood, then.
00:43:35To carve you into St. Joan,
00:43:37a sliver this big will do,
00:43:38unless you perk up and start taking an interest again.
00:43:41Well, Jan hasn't arrived, or Doug.
00:43:46Dougie isn't ever going to arrive.
00:43:48That's the hard, brutal truth,
00:43:49and the sooner you face up to it, the better.
00:43:51You aren't the first girl a man run out on.
00:43:54The why should do that to you.
00:43:56He didn't run out on me.
00:43:58Abbey, you're deluding, making it harder.
00:44:01You have to accept.
00:44:02Doug was here, or he's coming here.
00:44:04I've accepted that.
00:44:05Okay, can't be the first, so it has to be the latter.
00:44:08So when is he coming here, like young Lockenvar,
00:44:10ready to sweep you up on his white charger?
00:44:13I mean, how long do you intend staying around like this?
00:44:15I don't know!
00:44:20I must go home soon, but I can't.
00:44:23I can't leave him.
00:44:26Hey, hey, hey, let's have a party!
00:44:28Happy birthday!
00:44:31Champagne!
00:44:34Hey, here, here's your present, here's your present, man.
00:44:36Glad you're back.
00:44:42The other guests have gone and are not here yet, then?
00:44:44Janet Sadler? No, you're ahead of the game.
00:44:46She won't arrive.
00:44:50Is that another psychic feeling, or just a wild guess?
00:44:55Hm?
00:44:56Janet isn't going to arrive.
00:44:57Explain yourself.
00:44:59Did I say that?
00:45:00You certainly did.
00:45:01What do you mean by it?
00:45:02I don't know.
00:45:03I didn't even know that I said it.
00:45:05Why wouldn't she arrive?
00:45:07Well, one reason, it's after 7 now.
00:45:09She said she was arriving on the 5.30 train
00:45:11if she was coming at all.
00:45:12Isn't that right?
00:45:13So, the 5.30 was late.
00:45:15It's a clear evening, no fog, no rail strikes.
00:45:17I doubt that.
00:45:18She caught her later one, for God's sakes.
00:45:20Maybe.
00:45:21Well, the point is, how long do we wait?
00:45:23Right.
00:45:24Well, let's ask Abby.
00:45:25She's the psychic one.
00:45:28Come on, Abby.
00:45:29Concentrate hard on Janet Sadler
00:45:31and tell us when she's going to turn up.
00:45:33Come on.
00:45:34Come on.
00:45:35Come on.
00:45:36Come on.
00:45:37Come on.
00:45:38Come on, Abby.
00:45:39Come on.
00:45:40Come on.
00:45:41Come on, Abby.
00:45:42Tell us what's happening today.
00:45:44Concentrate, Abby.
00:45:46No!
00:45:47No!
00:45:55Well?
00:46:08Well, it proves the point about the sweet and simple life.
00:46:12And they say we're the ones that freak out.
00:46:15I agree with them.
00:46:16They kind of want us to.
00:46:17Here we are.
00:46:21Is she feeling any better now?
00:46:23She's all right.
00:46:24She's asleep.
00:46:26I think I'm going to turn in for the night.

00:50:46There's nothing to see.
00:50:47The answer is here.
00:50:51It's just a chunk of open ground and a few old trees.
00:50:55Six trees. Six. I can see them clearly.
00:51:00And they were burning.
00:51:02In my dream, they were burning.
00:51:07And Doug was dead, right beside me in the car.
00:51:11He was dead.
00:51:12What are you talking about? What car?
00:51:16Maybe a dream, a nightmare.
00:51:19The car was a Rolls.
00:51:22Does anyone own a Rolls Royce around here?
00:51:24A Rolls?
00:51:30Abby, you're letting this whole thing get you down, you know?
00:51:35I saw it.
00:51:36A big ghost of a car. I saw it.
00:51:40Saw it or dreamt it?
00:51:42I didn't dream it. It could have run me over.
00:51:45But who would want to and why?
00:51:53It's no good, Alan.
00:51:56It can't be opened until it's cool.
00:51:59Not until tomorrow.
00:52:02Beryl, we could...
00:52:03Alan, if you open that kiln, you'll ruin everything.
00:52:06It'll be the end.
00:52:09I couldn't let you do that.
00:52:13Beryl, the ashes.
00:52:17They're evidence.
00:52:20Not anymore.
00:52:25Metamorphosis.
00:52:28An act of total creation.
00:52:33You said only the gods could give immortality.
00:52:45That's all that matters, Alan.
00:52:47Hey, the paper says that that American group will turn up.
00:52:51Well, they say.
00:52:52Anyway, it'll be fun. You going to go, Abby?

00:52:55The rock festival.

00:53:21Well, I can't stay here any longer.
00:53:23I'll be moving on tomorrow.
00:53:27Well, I hate to lose you, Abby,
00:53:32but I guess you're right.
00:53:35I never did think this was the place for you.
00:53:38No, I, I must go.
00:53:41If you want to write that letter to your mother, I'll be happy to take it for you.

01:01:51It's a photograph from a university magazine.
01:01:55A clear, sharp photograph.
01:01:59Alan Smerton, fraternity president.
01:02:05But are you saying that Alan is...
01:02:07He's an imposter, yes.
01:02:09But why?
01:02:13$10,000 a month.
01:02:17His allowance, $10,000 a month.
01:02:19Every month.
01:02:23That's a life pension somewhat notable.
01:02:25Are you mad?

01:02:29It fits.
01:02:31It fits with Doug, don't you see?
01:02:37Doug did come here.
01:02:39Unexpectedly, and he saw the man that was posing as Alan.
01:02:43So I had to get rid of him.
01:02:51Doug's dead.
01:02:53And Janet.
01:02:55Abby, this is absurd.
