The ever-enduring enigma of Dax Flame continues to captivate the internet. Emerging on YouTube in the mid-2000s with his awkward yet endearing 'video diaries,' Dax blurred the lines between reality and performance, leaving viewers questioning his authenticity. He stepped back from the spotlight after a stint in Hollywood with appearances in films like Project X and 21 Jump Street. Today, Dax has resurfaced, returning to YouTube with new content that echoes his original style. He's also authored books, started a game show called Smoothie Madness, and even experimented with letting AI guide his life decisions. Despite these updates, the mystery remains unsolved—Dax Flame is back, but we still can't say if we're seeing the real person or the character he's so carefully crafted.

00:00Hello, Video Diary. This is my first entry. Good morning.
00:05In the early days of YouTube, a teenager named Madison Petrillo surprisingly rose to fame.
00:09Armed with a simple webcam in a dimly-lit room, he made video diaries that were as
00:14awkward as they were compelling. His stutters, nervous laughter,
00:17and quirky demeanor made him an unlikely hit.
00:19Well, as you can tell, I'm really, really, uh, my clothes and my hair is really,
00:27heh, like, really good. Someone say I'm handsome?
00:32In 2007, he uploaded his first video introducing himself as Bernice Jacques III,
00:37but prefers to be called Dax Flame. Although his early videos may be considered cringe today,
00:42filled with frequent blinks and fidgeting, it's easy to see why people were drawn to him.
00:45In the following years, Dax gathered a dedicated audience, becoming the 16th
00:49most-subscribed YouTuber on the platform. But the more people found out about him,
00:53the more confused they became. Was Dax real or not?
00:56I am ready for school. And, uh, these are clip-on binder rings. And, uh,
01:05here's my outfit for today. It's pretty much just what I wore in the Superman video.
01:12So, pretty awesome.
01:15One of the pivotal moments in his rise to fame was the release of Diary 30,
01:19Superman is Coming to School, and Diary 31, Humiliation, where he describes how going to
01:24school dressed as Superman resulted in the most humiliating day of his life.
01:27It was the most embarrassing day of my life.
01:34Over the years, these videos went viral, and the juxtaposition of their thumbnails became
01:38a popular meme format. The mystery surrounding his true personality deepened when his tone
01:42shifted dramatically between videos like Last Vlog Ever, where he vented about people saying
01:47they only watch him because they think he's mentally ill, and New Girlfriend,
01:50which showcased a completely different side to him.
01:53Words hurt worse than if someone throws a sledgehammer and hits your
01:59crotch over and over. And if you're a girl, then they would just, like, hit your face with it.
02:08Or typing, not words, just typing.
02:10Even comedian Bo Burnham commented on Dax's unique presence,
02:13calling him a genius without fully understanding why.
02:16Dax's internet fame opened doors to Hollywood. He moved from his Dallas bedroom to the big screen,
02:36landing roles in films like Project X and 21 Jump Street. Interestingly,
02:39his characters often mirrored his YouTube persona.
02:46After his stint in movies, Dax stepped back from regular video uploads. He published books such as
02:53I'm Just Sitting on a Fence, The Secrets of Life and Dax Flame's Guide to Making Money as an
02:57Influencer. He also worked at an ice cream shop in Los Angeles, an experience he later discussed
03:02in a documentary by fellow YouTuber iDubbbz titled The Ice Cream Man. The film aimed to
03:06uncover the real Dax Flame and concluded that he is, authentically, himself, quirks and all.
03:17In recent years, Dax turned to YouTube with new projects, like his game show Smoothie Madness,
03:28where contestants participate in hell-themed challenges, and found the residual stress of
03:32working his ice cream job depressed him. Facing personal and financial struggles,
03:36Dax turned to AI for guidance. He allowed chatTBT to assist with decisions in his life,
03:41from job applications to managing stress. This unique approach to life became a topic
03:46of discussion in his videos and interviews. Dax also found a new, younger audience on TikTok and
03:51says he appreciates the platform's potential for viral content and the spontaneity that it offers.
04:16In a recent video series, Dax candidly addressed his viewers,
04:26apologizing for misleading them about a hiatus. He admitted to fabricating a story about doing
04:30charity work, expressing genuine remorse for not being truthful. And most recently,
04:35Dax appeared on Bobby Althoff's The Really Good Podcast, where after a handful of awkward
04:39conversations, Dax gets kicked out mid-interview by Bobby. Whether Dax Flame is a crafted character
04:44or simply an authentic individual navigating his life in his own unique way remains a part
04:49of the enduring intrigue, and for many, this is less important than the enjoyment they derive
04:52from his content. What do you think? Is he real, or just putting on an act?
05:14Here's what's next!
