00:00The injury analysis and insight after a Sunday slate and weekend in the National Football League.
00:09We bring it to you each and every Monday morning to start off your new week with the pro football doc himself, Dr. David Chow.
00:16You can see all the great work he and his team do at SICscore.com.
00:21That's SICscore.com.
00:22Dr. Chow, we appreciate the time.
00:24Thank you for being here, as always, to start off this new week.
00:29Yeah, I was happy to be here.
00:30Unfortunately, there's always a ton to talk about.
00:33Always a ton to talk about.
00:35And Dr. Chow, for the team you used to work for for many years, that's the story with the Chargers.
00:41We knew that Justin Herbert wasn't 100% entering yesterday's game in the Steel City against Pittsburgh.
00:48An ankle injury that was aggravated in the second half.
00:51He did not return against the Steelers.
00:53As you see on the graphic, not only did L.A. lose its first game of the season, but a bunch of guys now showing up on the injury report.
01:03Let's start with the quarterback and Justin Herbert.
01:05What do you think his status is moving forward for the Bolts?
01:10Yeah, your list is there, is great there.
01:12But the Chargers actually lost.
01:14And I don't know that any team can ever say this.
01:17In that one game, they had four first-round draft picks exit.
01:23Justin Herbert, Rashawn Slater at left tackle, Joey Bosa, as you listed, and Joe Alt, the right tackle.
01:31That's unbelievable, right?
01:33Four first-round picks all exited that game.
01:36Justin Herbert, here's the good news.
01:38He didn't make it any worse.
01:42He didn't re-injure it significantly.
01:44The bad news is this was always a high ankle sprain and was never going to be 100%.
01:51So through the wear and tear of the game, it got worse.
01:54And in came Taylor Heineke.
01:58They got the Chiefs this year.
02:01Yeah.
02:02Go ahead.
02:03I was going to ask you a question on Justin Herbert just to get a second one in there.
02:06High ankle sprain and a low ankle sprain.
02:08How is that treated when you're coming up to a game?
02:11Is the taping the same as it would be for a low ankle sprain for a high ankle sprain?
02:15Or did you do something completely different?
02:18Well, I mean, it's a misnomer to say all low ankle sprains are better than high ankle sprains.
02:24A very severe low ankle sprain is worse than a mild high ankle sprain.
02:28But inversion low ankle sprains, the basketball type, are easier to tape or stabilize.
02:35High ankle sprains are very hard to fully tape.
02:39Sometimes you can inject them, et cetera.
02:41So it's not surprising they flare up or act up again, as in Justin Herbert's case.
02:47They've got the Chiefs this week.
02:49Now, it was interesting that they brought in Taylor Heinecke, who just got there.
02:54I think he's more Jim Harbaugh's guy than Easton Stick.
02:59And maybe this cracks the door open to resting Justin Herbert again or resting him this week.
03:06This is definitely going to be a coaching decision.
03:10There's no way Herbert will be 100%.
03:12And would you rather have a less than 100% Herbert or go with the newly acquired Taylor Heinecke?
03:19A big divisional matchup for the Chargers at home in L.A. on Sunday afternoon.
03:24Already booked as a full touchdown underdog against Kansas City.
03:28Let's keep it with the quarterback injury concerns with the Miami Dolphins.
03:32And, Doc, it continues to be a dismal situation in that Finn's quarterback room.
03:38Skyler Thompson exits the game yesterday for Miami in their matchup in Seattle
03:46with what they are calling a scary rib injury.
03:49What's the process moving forward for Miami as it pertains to their quarterbacks?
03:55Well, obviously, Tua's on injury reserve.
03:58He's got three more weeks to figure out what he wants to do and get second opinions on his head, et cetera.
04:06Skyler Thompson is not starting the game this week.
04:10Here's why I say that.
04:12It's not that his ribs will prevent him from.
04:14We've talked about rib block injections.
04:17But no offense to Skyler Thompson.
04:20He's not starting the game if he doesn't practice all week.
04:25And he's not practicing all week.
04:27It's one thing if Justin Herbert starts the game without essentially practicing all week
04:32with Taylor Heinecke newly acquired and Easton Stick behind him.
04:35But Skyler Thompson, Tim Boyle, maybe Snoop Huntley, they're going to start.
04:41One of those two are going to start the game, not Skyler Thompson.
04:44He's a backup, and backups don't start games when they don't practice.
04:50Doc, doubleheader tonight on Monday Night Football.
04:52It's a big night for sixscore.com.
04:54I want to talk a little Cincinnati Bengals side here on offense.
04:57Tee Higgins back from a hamstring injury.
05:00What are the looks for Tee Higgins tonight for Cincinnati?
05:03Well, you know, I wouldn't expect him to have 70 offensive plays.
05:07But he'll be there, be out there.
05:10The question is, what about his burst in speed, right, with the hamstring?
05:13You don't want to make it worse there.
05:16But the biggest issue there is up front for the Bengals,
05:20the de-tackles, both starting de-tackles out for the game.
05:24And will Jackson be able to run the ball there?
05:28You see right there, that is the person.
05:31Washington will be able to run the ball.
05:34Correct.
05:34And Washington has run it pretty well with their young rookie quarterback
05:38in Jaden Daniels.
05:39He had 88 yards in the opener and two touchdowns.
05:42The field view at sixscore.com gives you the perspective
05:46for how healthy these teams are entering in those key positional groups.
05:50Let's go to the first game on this Monday Night Doubleheader, Doc,
05:53in Western New York.
05:55It's the Buffalo Bills hosting the Jacksonville Jaguars
05:58as a five-and-a-half point favorite.
06:00What is field view telling you about these two teams
06:03entering this week three matchup?
06:06Well, it's interesting.
06:07Both teams are relatively healthy offensively
06:10and relatively injured defensively.
06:13Jacksonville, you see, with the secondary issues there.
06:16And Buffalo, if you flip to the other side, has, you know,
06:19the two, their two best linebackers out, Matt Milano and Terrell Bernard,
06:23and obviously the slot corner there.
06:25So, you know, this may be a little more of an offensive game shootout.
06:29That's what the field views show with the two teams as you line them up.
06:34So it's not always about the side,
06:36but the offenses are healthier than both defenses today.
06:40The total in Western New York, 45-and-a-half.
06:42The total in Cincinnati, 46-and-a-hook.
06:46As the Bengals look for their first win of the year,
06:49Jacksonville trying to pull off the upset to do the same in Buffalo.
06:53The pro football doc, Dr. David Chow, with us here on this Monday,
06:57looking back on the weekend
06:58and getting you set for the doubleheader on Monday Night Football.
07:01Dr. Chow, as always, we appreciate the time.
