00:00Liverpool City Council has mapped out an ambitious programme of groundbreaking interlinked projects which would revolutionise the industry.
00:09The proposals are expected to be funded by private sector sources with government support, with media giant Universal expressing their commitment to the concept.
00:17New Retro Records is a recently launched jazz and soul label based in Merseyside. We spoke to co-founder John about the inspiration to start the label.
00:27Before I went off and worked with massive pop bands in the early 2000s, I was in, I played in bands, I had a development deal.
00:35Our reason for doing it was we were already managing the artists, now if we're managing the artists we take 20%, that's a standard thing that all managers take.
00:42And we thought, rather than passing that artist over to a label and then they take a percentage, let's not do that.
00:49Let's just make the management company a label as well. So the artist gets, it's boring, but the artist gets more financially.
00:57The council's plans include a recording and rehearsal space which would be used by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and a leading national facility for emerging and established artists.
01:07This would be the only UK studio of its kind in capacity outside London. It's been dubbed the Abbey Road of the North.
01:14We already are the country's music city, aren't we? We just are.
01:17And that, you know, sometimes you can get a little bit annoyed about the Beatles thing because we've done a lot of stuff since.
01:22And I don't get annoyed about the Beatles thing, I don't at all, I embrace that heritage.
01:26But you know, you do hear people go, so much more than the Beatles.
01:29There's so many reasons why that is absolutely bang on and it's the way it should be.
01:34We're a music city, we should trade on that, definitely.
01:36Liverpool City Region Metro Mayor Steve Rotherham revealed the radical plans to remix the music sector at a Creative UK event as part of the Labour Party conference in the city.
01:46The draft business cases, funded by monies received from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, are to be presented to government in the coming weeks, with detailed plans expected to be announced in 2025.
