00:28on two more subjects,
00:29because this is yesterday when we found out
00:31that Lon Chaney's hump in the hunchback of Notre Dame
00:33weighed 70 pounds.
00:35Talk about get off my back.
00:37But before we play the game,
00:38let's meet the players who are gonna actually play it.
00:40And here they are, starting with Barbara.
00:41Hi, I'm Barbara Bacon,
00:43originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
00:45My husband Danny and I have been married a year and a half.
00:47I'm in sales and I'm an old movie buff.
00:49An old movie buff.
00:50What's your favorite old movie?
00:51Random Harvest with Greer Garson.
00:53Oh, a lovely movie.
00:54That's a great one.
00:55Okay, nice to have you with us.
00:57All right, let's meet our second player, Dan.
00:59Hi, I'm Dan Angel.
01:00I'm a native of Michigan.
01:01I'm a college administrator.
01:03I'm married, I have two children,
01:04and my hobby is magic.
01:06Okay, welcome to Hitman, Dan.
01:07And let's meet Kathy.
01:09Hi, I'm Kathy Burlingham.
01:10I'm a native of Southern California.
01:12I'm married to a police officer
01:13and I have two gorgeous kids, Brooke and Shane,
01:16and my hobby is being a stage mother.
01:18Good for you.
01:19Okay, welcome everybody to Hitman.
01:20Now, these are our three challengers,
01:21two of whom will get a chance
01:23to go up against our champion in round two.
01:24We don't have to wait to meet our champion
01:25because here he is right now, Leon Reed.
01:27Leon, how you doing?
01:30Okay, good to see you.
01:31All right, back again.
01:32What is this, your number five?
01:34Five, fifth time.
01:35You're getting to be a fixture around here.
01:37Hope so.
01:37Okay, you ready to take on
01:38two of these three challengers?
01:39Oh, let's try it.
01:40Okay, all right, and in just a minute,
01:41we're gonna be showing our contestants
01:42and you out there our first story.
01:43Of course, Leon, you'll be watching from all states.
01:45We'll be seeing you after round one
01:47and we'll be seeing you right after this.
01:49Uh-uh-uh, a lady shouldn't use a sticky roll-on.
01:52A lady shouldn't use a scattering spray.
01:55What choice do I have?
01:57New Lady's Choice Solid Antiperspirant.
01:59After comparing it to the sticky feel of the leading roll-on
02:02and the spray of the leading aerosol,
02:03most women chose the smooth, dry feel of Lady's Choice.
02:07It goes on dry to help keep you dry all day, every day.
02:11Lady's Choice helps keep me dry all day, every day.
02:15Lady's Choice helps keep me dry all day, every day.
02:20Make your choice Lady's Choice.
02:26So, this is your townhouse.
02:28Yes, sir.
02:29Where you make townhouse crackers.
02:31Buttery-tasting townhouse crackers.
02:33Buttery, what a coincidence, I sell butter.
02:36Old townhouse crackers taste buttery,
02:38but their rich buttery taste comes from elf and magic,
02:41not butter.
02:42Come on, next you'll be telling me
02:44that townhouse crackers aren't baked in a townhouse.
02:46Well, actually...
02:49Rich, buttery-tasting townhouse crackers.
02:54♪♪
02:56Okay, we're back and ready to go.
02:58Now, you know we get all the answers
02:59before we get to the questions,
03:00but all the answers are in the form of a story,
03:02and all the answers and all the questions
03:03are gonna be based on that story,
03:04the story of the making of Casablanca.
03:08This is Rick's Place,
03:10an exotic nightclub set in the middle
03:12of an exotic city, Casablanca.
03:15At least that's the way it was in the movie.
03:17In real life, the film was shot in Burbank,
03:20except for the airport scene,
03:22which was done a few miles away in Van Nuys,
03:25and so much of exotic locales.
03:28The movie itself had humble origins.
03:30It began as an unproduced play called
03:33Everybody Comes to Ricks,
03:35which Warner Brothers Studio bought for just $20,000.
03:39The screenwriters kept Rick's,
03:41which in the film is called the Café Americain,
03:44but they made up most of the rest.
03:46One of the writers, Howard Koch,
03:48was writing even as they were filming.
03:51Remember Rick's line to Ilza?
03:53Here's looking at you, kid.
03:55Well, Koch didn't have to write that.
03:57It was an ad-lib from Bogart.
04:00Ingrid Bergman, who played Ilza, had a special problem.
04:03Because the ending wasn't written
04:05until the filming was almost over,
04:07she never knew whether she was supposed
04:09to be in love with Bogart
04:10or the man who played her husband, Paul Henry.
04:13By the way, Rick was almost played by Ronald Reagan.
04:17Then Rick would have looked at the one he loved and said,
04:20here's looking at you, wise-o.
04:23In fact, when the producer, Hal Wallace,
04:25told the studio he wanted Bogart,
04:27Jack Warner yelled,
04:29who the hell would ever wanna kiss Bogart?
04:31When Warner figured out that the answer was
04:33a lot of women, he cast him.
04:37Strangely, Conrad Veidt,
04:39who played the villainous Nazi major,
04:41was the highest-paid actor in the cast.
04:43He got $5,000 a week.
04:46Don't feel bad for Bogart.
04:48Soon after Casablanca,
04:49Warner's gave him a new contract
04:51that made him the best-paid actor in the world.
04:55In 1943, Casablanca won the Oscar for Best Picture.
04:59The director, Michael Curtiz, also won an Oscar.
05:03Curtiz was Hungarian, and his English wasn't the best.
05:07In accepting, he said,
05:08so many times I have a speech ready, but no dice.
05:12Always a bridesmaid, never a mother.
05:14Heh, it's a good thing he didn't write the script.
05:17The movie featured a song that no one could forget,
05:20As Time Goes By.
05:22Though it was written by Herman Hupfield
05:24a dozen years before,
05:26it wasn't a hit until Casablanca was released.
05:29Then it became so popular that Dooley Wilson,
05:32the actor who sang it in the movie,
05:34started getting more fan mail than Clark Gable.
05:37By the way, although Dooley Wilson portrayed Sam,
05:41the man who Bogie supposedly asked to play it again,
05:44Sam never played it at all
05:46because Dooley Wilson couldn't play the piano.
05:49He only faked the finger movements.
05:51But that was okay because Bogart never asked Sam
05:54to quote, play it again, unquote.
05:56He just said, play it.
05:58And faulty memories added the rest.
06:01In the unforgettable last shot of the film,
06:03Bogart and Claude Rains walk into the fog
06:07on their way to join the Free French.
06:09Says Bogart,
06:10Louie, I think this is the beginning
06:13of a beautiful friendship.
06:14It is also the end of a beautiful movie.
06:20All right, that's our first story.
06:24Now our game is played in two very different rounds.
06:26In round one, our three challengers
06:28will be fighting it out.
06:29In order to determine which two of them
06:30are gonna go on to do battle
06:31with our reigning champion later on in round two.
06:33And of course, we make that determination
06:35by running our little race.
06:36Now whichever two of you crosses that finish line first
06:38will be the two who get to go on
06:39and meet our champion in round two.
06:41Unfortunately, that person who comes in third
06:44will not have that opportunity
06:45because they'll be out of the game.
06:46Hands on buzzers because here comes your first question.
06:48What unforgettable song was featured
06:50in Casablanca, Kathy?
06:52As Time Goes By.
06:53You are right!
06:54And you're the first one out of the gate.
06:57What line did Bogart ad-lib?
07:00He was looking at you, kid.
07:01You are right again!
07:03Okay, Kathy's moving out quickly.
07:06Who almost played the part of Rick?
07:08Barbara?
07:09Ronald Reagan.
07:10Ronald Reagan is right and Barbara steps up.
07:12That would have been interesting, wouldn't it?
07:13Ronald Reagan, okay.
07:15Next question.
07:15Most of the film Casablanca was shot in what city, Barbara?
07:18Burbank.
07:19Burbank is right and Barbara's even with Kathy.
07:22The ladies are taking it to you, Dan.
07:24Okay, here we go.
07:25What was the name of the play
07:26on which Casablanca is based?
07:28Barbara?
07:29Everybody Comes to Ricks.
07:30You are right again!
07:31Barbara moves up in the lead, Kathy one behind
07:34and Dan's yet to be heard from.
07:35Here's the question.
07:36In Casablanca, who played Ilsa?
07:39Kathy?
07:40Ingrid Bergman.
07:41Yes, she did!
07:41Kathy's even with Barbara.
07:44What is the full name of Rick's Cafe in the movie?
07:47Barbara?
07:48Rick's Cafe Americana.
07:49Oh, we can't take that, Barbara.
07:50It's Cafe American.
07:52You're even with Kathy and here's the next question.
07:54Dooley Wilson faked playing what instrument, Kathy?
07:56Piano.
07:57Piano is right!
07:58Kathy's one step away from being our first winner
08:01and here's the question that could put you over.
08:03Bogart said,
08:04Louie, I think this is going to be the beginning of...
08:06Barbara?
08:07A Beautiful Friendship.
08:08Of A Beautiful Friendship is right!
08:10Barbara's even with Kathy,
08:11both one step away from being our first winner
08:13and here's the question that could put either over
08:16or either over, as it were.
08:18What was the name of the highest paid actor in the cast?
08:20Dan?
08:21Seifel.
08:23No, Veidt.
08:24Conrad Veidt.
08:25Okay, Dan, you gotta sit it out.
08:27You go to Barbara and Kathy with this question
08:29and here it is.
08:31If one of you answers it correctly,
08:32it puts you right into the winner's circle.
08:34Name the character portrayed by Dooley Wilson.
08:37Kathy?
08:38Sam.
08:39Sam is right, Kathy!
08:39You're our first winner!
08:41Congratulations, you got yourself $300
08:43and you'll get a chance to meet that champion in round two
08:46and you can just sit back and relax
08:47while Dan and Barbara fight it out.
08:49Dan's back in the game.
08:50Barbara's one step away.
08:51What studio bought the...
08:53Dan?
08:54Warner.
08:54Warner Brothers is right!
08:55Everybody come to Rich.
08:57When you're in that position, you gotta jump in.
08:58You were right.
08:59Okay, Barbara is still one step away.
09:01Here's the next question.
09:02What words did Bogey actually say to Sam?
09:05Barbara?
09:08Again.
09:08No, no, he said play it.
09:11He did not say play it again.
09:12You fell into the trap.
09:13Okay, Barbara, you were wrong.
09:15We're gonna turn your podium light out.
09:16We go strictly to Dan.
09:17If you're right, if you know the answer, Dan,
09:19press the buzzer.
09:20If you don't, just don't press it.
09:20That way you don't get penalized.
09:21Question is all for you and here it is.
09:23After Casablanca, what did Warners give Bogart?
09:27Sam.
09:28A new contract.
09:29A new contract is right!
09:30Dan moves up.
09:31Moving up on Barbara who's back in the game.
09:34Barbara's kind of stalled at the finish line.
09:36Here is the next question.
09:38To what character did Rick say,
09:39here's looking at you, Dan?
09:42Bergman.
09:43No, character, the answer is Ilsa.
09:46Bergman was the actress.
09:47You have to say Ilsa was the answer.
09:48Okay, Dan, you gotta turn your light podium light out.
09:51We go to Barbara.
09:51It's all for you, Barbara.
09:52You know the rules.
09:54If you know it, press the buzzer.
09:55If you don't, just don't touch it.
09:55If you get it right, you are our second winner
09:56and here it is, all for you.
09:59Who said, who the hell would ever wanna kiss Bogart?
10:07Jack Warner.
10:08Yep.
10:09Okay, Dan's back in.
10:10You gotta reprieve, Dan.
10:11I saw the sigh of relief.
10:12Here's a question for Barbara and Dan.
10:15As time goes by, was written how many years, Barbara?
10:18One dozen.
10:19One dozen is right and you're our second winner.
10:22Congratulations, Barbara.
10:24That means you are gonna join Captain
10:25in the next fight against the champion, round two.
10:27Well done.
10:28Dan, you had a couple of tough ladies to battle against.
10:30You played well.
10:31We've got some nice prizes for you.
10:32I thank you for being on Hitman.
10:33All right, we'll be back in a moment
10:35to see how our challengers do battle
10:37against the champion in round two.
10:38Right after this.
10:51Mommy has the Amvisol.
10:52We'll just massage some right where it hurts.
10:55Oh, you're such a little trooper.
10:58Look, when nerve endings are irritated,
11:00Amvisol works on contact to soothe sore gums.
11:03Stop minor teething pain for hours.
11:05Amvisol worked fast, didn't it?
11:08Amvisol, liquid or gel, stops teething pain on contact.
11:11Nighty night.
11:15Why do you insist on Preparation H?
11:17When you find something that you like
11:19and that works for you, you don't wanna switch.
11:21I am not interested in experimenting anymore.
11:22I've tried other products
11:24and always come back to Preparation H.
11:26Doctor recommended Preparation H
11:28often gives temporary relief from pain and itch flare-ups,
11:31even helps shrink swelling of inflamed hemorrhoidal tissues.
11:34My medicine cabinet only has Preparation H.
11:36Preparation H is super.
11:39Preparation H relieves pain and itch,
11:41even helps shrink swelling.
11:45You know, I don't normally go around
11:47chatting about feminine protection any more than you do.
11:50But finding the right full-size protection
11:52is kind of important, and maybe I can help.
11:55Personally, I choose Stay Free Maxi Pads
11:57for comfort without compromise.
12:00What that means is they have a comfortable size and shape
12:04and they stay comfortably in place.
12:06When you get all that comfort
12:07without giving up full-size protection,
12:09that's comfort without compromise.
12:11That's Stay Free Maxi Pads.
12:15My gray hair makes me feel so old.
12:17You know what I'm gonna do?
12:19I'm gonna wash that gray right out of my hair.
12:22I'm gonna wash that gray right out of my hair.
12:25Loving Care Color Lotion from Clarol
12:27washes away your gray and washes in your own natural color.
12:31Loving Care is different.
12:32It's gentle.
12:33It has no peroxide or ammonia.
12:35So I wash that gray right out of my hair.
12:38Oh, yes, I wash that gray right out of my hair.
12:41Wash that gray right out of your hair
12:43with Clarol Loving Care.
12:45Okay, we're back for round two of Hitman,
12:47and we've got our two winners with us.
12:49We've got Kathy, who's won $300 in round one,
12:52and we've got Barbara, who won $200 in round one.
12:54Okay, now, round two, ladies, is a little different
12:57because in this round,
12:58the challengers attempt to unseat the champion.
13:00Therefore, let's meet him one more time,
13:02our champion of four days, Leon Reed.
13:05How are you, Leon?
13:07Okay, $16,300.
13:10Leon, let me ask you, I'm sure everybody knows who you are.
13:12$16,300.
13:13Leon, let me ask you, I'm sure everybody's interested.
13:15Have you always had a very retentive mind,
13:17or do you have a...
13:18It's just a gift.
13:19The good Lord gives everybody different presents,
13:21and I just have sort of a sponge up there for weird facts.
13:24That sponge is coming real.
13:25These two are tough.
13:26You found that, you saw, huh?
13:28They are, well, they're gonna give you a run for your money.
13:30Great challenge.
13:31Let's see how it works out.
13:32In round two, we're gonna see a brand new story,
13:35and that is Henry VIII and his six little ladies.
13:40You think people mess around too much today?
13:43Well, let us tell you about a king
13:45who couldn't hold still for a second.
13:48When Henry VIII was 12,
13:49he was promised a marriage for the first time.
13:52It was to Catherine of Aragon.
13:54Catherine was a real catch
13:56because her mother was Queen Isabella of Spain.
13:59But Henry put off marrying her until he was 18,
14:02and then he only did it
14:04because it was his father's dying wish.
14:0710 years later, Henry divorced Catherine
14:09because he was in love with another woman, Anne Boleyn.
14:13Now, here's where the story picks up tempo.
14:15Catherine of Aragon was sent to live in exile,
14:18and Anne Boleyn moved into the castle.
14:21Soon, Anne Boleyn was pregnant,
14:24so Henry married her and made her Queen of England.
14:27They lived happily ever after
14:29until Anne gave birth to a girl who they named Elizabeth.
14:33Henry had been hoping for a boy,
14:35so he decided to dump Anne Boleyn.
14:37What he did was accuse her of committing adultery
14:40with five men, and then he had her beheaded
14:43without so much as a hey, nani, nani.
14:4610 days later, Henry married again,
14:49this time to Jane Seymour.
14:51Jane had a personal motto,
14:52quote, bound to obey and serve, unquote.
14:56Well, she obeyed Henry
14:57and soon served him up a son named Edward.
15:01Now, Jane was set for life.
15:03Unfortunately, it was a short life,
15:05for in the same month, she died.
15:08Grief-stricken, Henry began looking
15:10for a mother for his son.
15:12In a 16th century version of photo dating,
15:15he sent the great painter Holbein to Europe
15:17to paint portraits of the eligible princesses.
15:20Eventually, Henry sacrificed beauty for politics,
15:24and he married Anne of Cleves.
15:26This brought England closer to Germany.
15:28Within the year, the marriage was on the rocks,
15:31but Henry kept Germany on his good side.
15:33Instead of beheading Anne of Cleves,
15:36he adopted her as his, quote, sister, unquote,
15:39and gave her enough money to buy a new dress every day,
15:43kind of like Queen Nancy of Brecon.
15:45Henry then married one of Anne's maids of honor,
15:48Catherine Howard.
15:49Catherine Howard was his prettiest wife,
15:52and Henry minted a special coin to honor their marriage.
15:55On it, he called Catherine, quote,
15:57a rose without a thorn, unquote.
16:00Henry soon found a thorn,
16:02when he found Catherine entwined with Thomas Culpepper.
16:05Shortly thereafter, Catherine and Culpepper
16:08were made shortly thereafter,
16:10as they were taken to the tower and beheaded.
16:13Henry's sixth and last wife was Catherine Parr.
16:16Catherine Parr was not only his queen,
16:19but also his nurse, as Henry was ill.
16:22Soon, Catherine became Henry's widow,
16:24which means she obviously wasn't much of a nurse.
16:27But he got back at her.
16:29You see, he was laid to rest beside Jane Seymour.
16:33Even in death, Henry got around.
16:35All right, that's our story on The Wild and Crazy Henry.
16:43And of course, this is the board
16:44upon which we play round two.
16:46Anne Cathy, because you came in first in round one,
16:48you get the proverbial four hit men, and here they are.
16:51And Barbara, for coming in second in round one,
16:53you get three hit men, and here they are.
16:55Now, that's a combined total of seven hit men.
16:57To keep things nice and even, champ,
16:59we always give to the champ our seven hit men,
17:00and here they are.
17:02All right, in this round, the champion is going to fight
17:04each challenger one at a time.
17:05Players, a right answer knocks out an opponent's man,
17:08a wrong answer knocks out one of your own men.
17:10But when a challenger loses a man,
17:11she must stop playing while the champion
17:13then takes on the other challenger.
17:15The champion is trying to wipe out all the challenger's men.
17:18Each challenger, however, is trying to wipe out
17:20the champion's last man.
17:21The winner of the game will go on to try
17:23for our triple crown worth $10,000 in cash.
17:26Now, Kathy, since you came in first in round one,
17:29you get to decide who goes up against Leon first,
17:30you or Barbara.
17:31I think I'll let Barbara.
17:33That's real nice of you, Kathy.
17:34I'm sure Barbara wants to thank you.
17:35Don't you, Barbara?
17:36Oh, yes.
17:37I figured as much.
17:38Okay, Barbara and Leon, here's the question.
17:40Henry married Catherine of Aragon
17:42because it was whose dying wish?
17:44Leon.
17:45It was his father's dying wish.
17:46It was indeed.
17:47And Barbara's hit and leaves the man.
17:48Kathy, you didn't have to wait long.
17:50Here you are up against Leon.
17:52Henry sent a great painter to paint a painting
17:56whose portraits, Leon?
17:57Oh, the most beautiful women in Europe,
17:58so he could make a choice.
18:00No, it's eligible princesses.
18:01You had to specifically princesses, not just women.
18:03Oh, sorry.
18:04All right, that means the champ's hit and loses the man.
18:05We stay with you, Kathy.
18:07All right, here's the question.
18:09Henry accused Anne Boleyn of what, Leon?
18:11Adultery with five guys.
18:13Yeah, with five guys is right.
18:15And Kathy's hit and loses the man.
18:17We go back over to Barbara.
18:19Ready, Barbara?
18:20Ready.
18:21Okay, here we go.
18:22What sex was a child which Anne Boleyn
18:23gave birth to, Barbara?
18:25Female.
18:26Female's right.
18:27You are right.
18:28And the champ's hit and leaves the man.
18:29Okay.
18:31What was Jane Seymour's motto, Leon?
18:34To obey and serve.
18:36You are right.
18:37It was indeed.
18:38And Barbara's hit and leaves the man.
18:40You're incredible, Leon.
18:41Great memory.
18:42We go back to Kathy, and here's the question.
18:44Kathy's three hit men against the champ's five.
18:47When Henry was promised in marriage,
18:49for the first time, he was how old, Leon?
18:51He was 12.
18:52He was indeed 12.
18:53Kathy's hit and leaves the man.
18:55Okay.
18:56Over to Barbara to take on this champ.
18:58Here it comes.
18:59Henry divorced Catherine of Aragon
19:01because he was in love with who, Barbara?
19:03Anne Boleyn.
19:04Anne Boleyn is right.
19:05Kathy's hit and leaves the man.
19:07Okay, Barbara, I'm glad you got that
19:09because you've got one hit man left,
19:11and you could have been bye-bye before I said anything.
19:13You have one left.
19:14The champ has four.
19:15You know what happens if he gets the question correctly.
19:18Okay?
19:19Here it comes.
19:20How was Catherine Howard disposed of?
19:22Barbara?
19:23Exiled.
19:24No, she was beheaded.
19:26We're going to exile you, though, Barbara.
19:28We're going to have to go over to Kathy,
19:29and it's up to Kathy to see what she does against Leon.
19:31Here are two hit men against Leon's four.
19:33Here's the question.
19:35Henry dumped Anne Boleyn because he had been hoping for what, Leon?
19:39He wanted a son.
19:40Yes, he did want a son,
19:41and Kathy's hit and leaves the man.
19:43Okay, Kathy, you are down to your last hit man.
19:45If Leon answers this question correctly,
19:47I know you're pussying,
19:48but you've got to be pushing it faster,
19:49and if Leon answers it right,
19:51he stays as the champ.
19:52Here's the question.
19:54Which of Henry's wives was a political marriage?
19:59Anne of Leeds.
20:01Anne of Cleves.
20:02No, you said Leeds first.
20:04No, you said Leeds first.
20:05You've got to take your first answer.
20:06It was Anne of Cleves.
20:07Okay, Leon's hit and loses the man down to three.
20:09Kathy, you've got to reprieve.
20:11Here's the next question.
20:13For which wife did Henry have a special coin minted to honor their...
20:17Kathy?
20:18Katherine...
20:19Um...
20:22No, it's Katherine Howard.

20:25and Leon is the champ again.

20:31You're the champ again.
20:32Barbara, you get yourself $300 for round one.
20:34I thank you for being with us.
20:36Kathy, that last name got you a little bit.
20:38But you still got yourself $300.
20:40Hope you had a good time on Hitman.
20:42All right, champ Leon,
20:43you're going to have an opportunity
20:44to go for a triple crown for $10,000 in cash.
