00:04APPLAUSE
00:31Hello, everybody. Friday has arrived.
00:33We've endured another week together, come what may,
00:36and that's a reason to smile.
00:38Thank you so much for tuning in. We never take it for granted.
00:41And, Rachel, I love Friday's show.
00:43It's always a little giddy, it's fair to say.
00:45Are you ready to whip your thong off underneath that desk
00:48and go out and party all weekend?
00:50Let me ask you a question instead.
00:52If I was to go hooking in your closet,
00:54would I find any particular outfits?
00:57For example, a Batman.
00:58Loads of creepy people on the internet ask me these questions.
01:01Where are you going with this? I'm thinking more an Elsa or a Harry Potter.
01:04Is this what you're into? No. You're trying to give me fashion tips.
01:07Do you want me to come dressed as your favourite Disney character?
01:10Well, I could be, but I'm not personally.
01:12But, you know, cosplay is huge now,
01:14and in the UK it's one of the top five countries per capita
01:17of people who spend their weekends
01:19indulging in the fantasy of their favourite thing.
01:22I've done Uma Thurman a la Kill Bill in my time.
01:25It was a great film, Kill Bill,
01:27but I think you would make a fantastic Harley Quinn
01:30if I was to choose a cosplay outfit for you, you know what I mean?
01:34Why, thank you.
01:35I feel like we're still going into the strange areas
01:37of the internet right now, Colin. Not at all.
01:39Dangerous territories. What would you go as?
01:41Now, hear me out on this.
01:43You know what Countdown's regular viewers are like.
01:46I think we could have a Countdown cosplay convention
01:51where people come dressed as Susie, you, the teapot,
01:56a dictionary, or one of the present
01:59or past Countdown presenters. Yeah.
02:01What do you think? Do you think anyone would turn up?
02:03Oh, I think anyone that's got a black jumper can come as Susie
02:06and they'll be sorted.
02:08That's very cruel, but she's not here to say anything else.
02:11She's off at the moment, aren't Susie?
02:13We wish you all the best and doing a great job this week,
02:16holding the fort, doing the job of both Susie and himself.
02:19Let's hear it for Simon.
02:21APPLAUSE
02:23You mentioned Dungeons & Dragons the other day.
02:25A bit of cosplay in your world?
02:27I've definitely cosplayed as the Dungeons & Dragons character
02:31that I've been playing for the last couple of years.
02:33Yeah.
02:34Bought a big ginger beard that somebody knitted on Etsy
02:37in Canada, and a dwarven soldier's helmet.
02:41Yeah.
02:42And sat on the internet for about 700 hours
02:46pretending to be a bloke called Ruffian Peel.
02:49Right.
02:50Nothing you said made sense to me, but I'm glad you enjoyed it.
02:53That's the main thing.
02:54Peter's your new champion.
02:56He managed to beat Rick Seng, who'd won six.
02:58Absolutely brilliant, Peter.
03:00We talked about a love of vinyl,
03:02but you've actually been in the other side of the mic, haven't you,
03:05in various bands and stuff?
03:06Yeah, so I play the drums. I've done since I was 13.
03:09And I've got an electronic kit at home,
03:12so I don't make quite so much noise.
03:14Can you wear headphones with that?
03:15I can indeed, yeah.
03:16And I can plug through into a laptop and I can do all kinds of things.
03:19It works well, I think, for both sides.
03:21Absolutely. Thank goodness.
03:23You wouldn't want to live next door to a drum kit
03:25in a flat in London, for sure.
03:27Well, let's see if we can get you two wins today.
03:29You're up against Sam Manojlovic.
03:31Sam, welcome to the show.
03:33Now, you're the reason we're talking about cosplay.
03:35You see, Rachel, there's always sense to the madness.
03:37This is big in your world, like millions of others.
03:39So let us into your world. Tell us all about it.
03:42So, cosplay is just...
03:44It's short for costume play.
03:46So the whole point is people dress up as various characters
03:49from different fandoms that they like.
03:51So just a few examples of what I've done.
03:53I've dressed up as Spider-Man, I've dressed up as Shazam,
03:56I've dressed up as The Flash, Doctor Who.
03:58Which Doctor Who?
03:59Did you go Sebastian McCoy with a big scarf?
04:01I did Matt Smith.
04:02I've done Matt Smith's brown tweed and his purple tweed outfits
04:05from his run.
04:06Which Doctor would I be?
04:08I think maybe a good Patrick Troughton.
04:10That is an insult, as far as I'm concerned.
04:12I will no longer talk to you.
04:14Sam, good luck today. Peter and Sam.
04:18Great.
04:19We're listening to Challenger Yesterday's champion today.
04:21So, Peter, you get to pick the first letters.
04:23Constant, please, Rachel.
04:25Thank you, Peter.
04:26Start today with C.
04:28And another.
04:30L.
04:31And a third.
04:33D.
04:34A vowel.
04:36I.
04:37And another.
04:38E.
04:39And a third.
04:40A.
04:42A consonant.
04:44B.
04:46A vowel.
04:48O.
04:49And a final consonant, please.
04:51A final M.
04:53At home and in the studio, let's play Countdown.
05:09MUSIC PLAYS
05:25Well, he made a great start as challenger.
05:27Let's see how he does as champion.
05:29Peter.
05:30Seven, not written down.
05:31And Sam.
05:32Six.
05:33OK, we've got Sam.
05:34Mobile.
05:35Mobile.
05:36The seven not written down?
05:37Medical.
05:38A load of sevens.
05:39Decimal, if you just change medical around a bit.
05:41Claimed was there as well.
05:43But I believe you can take us one step further.
05:45There is an eight here.
05:46Of course, Batman, who you might see somebody cosplaying as,
05:50would drive the Batmobile.
05:52But if you saw somebody driving round in one of those Advans,
05:55they would be driving round in an Admobile.
05:57No!
05:58Yes.
05:59Fantastic.
06:00APPLAUSE
06:01Never knew the word existed.
06:03Brilliant if you managed to get that at home.
06:05You're beating everybody in the studio.
06:07Right, my friend, it's time for your first letters.
06:10Afternoon, Rachel.
06:11Afternoon, Sam.
06:12Can I get a consonant, please?
06:14Thank you. Start with N.
06:15And a vowel.
06:17A.
06:18And another.
06:20U.
06:21And a consonant.
06:23T.
06:24And another consonant.
06:27S.
06:28And a vowel.
06:30A.
06:32One more vowel, please.
06:35E.
06:37Another consonant.
06:39N.
06:40And a final vowel, please.
06:43Final A.
06:4530 seconds.
07:04OK, Sam?
07:18Of the six.
07:19Yes, and Peter?
07:20Six as well.
07:21OK, we've got Sam?
07:22Nausea.
07:23Nausea.
07:24And Peter?
07:25Unseat.
07:26Yeah, it's exactly what you get if you're unseated in an election.
07:29Nausea.
07:30Two very good sixes.
07:32Fantastic start, Rufus, with that eight.
07:34Anything better than six?
07:36What do you think something that produces nausea might be called?
07:40A nauseant.
07:41No.
07:42Yes.
07:43Right.
07:44Fantastic.
07:45APPLAUSE
07:47Your start from Dictionary Corner so far, fantastic.
07:50It's amazing what a laptop can do for a man's game, isn't it?
07:54Well, Peter's got a slight lead at the moment, but Sam's on the board.
07:57Let's get the first numbers.
07:59And, Champ, you're picking.
08:00I'm going to go for six small again, please.
08:02Six little ones, I like your style.
08:04And hopefully something interesting.
08:07First numbers of the day.
08:084, 8, 1, 8, 6 and 7.
08:14And the target?
08:15512.
08:16512, numbers up.
08:30MUSIC PLAYS
08:48512.
08:50How did it work out for you, Peter?
08:52Yeah, 512.
08:53You got it.
08:54Something else with six small numbers.
08:56Sam?
08:57Not even close.
08:58Sam's not very good at the numbers.
09:00Go ahead, Peter.
09:01So, I think 7 plus 1 is 8.
09:02This is a very neat one, isn't it?
09:048.
09:05Times 8.
09:06Times 8.
09:07Times 8.
09:08Times 8.
09:09Yeah.
09:108 cubed, 512.
09:11Well done.
09:12APPLAUSE
09:13Very good.
09:14Right, let's get our first tea time teaser of the day.
09:16Cats Knows.
09:17Cats Knows.
09:18Fool Miss Sanderson over a title.
09:21Fool Miss Sanderson over a title.
09:24MUSIC PLAYS
09:29APPLAUSE
09:38Welcome back.
09:39Our tea time teaser was Cats Knows.
09:41Brilliant clue, this one.
09:42Fool Miss Sanderson over a title.
09:44Contessa.
09:45Tessa Sanderson, of course, Olympic gold medalist.
09:48A true British Olympic great.
09:51Right, the battle so far, 23-6.
09:54But you see, if you're a challenger in that first part,
09:57if you get any points on the board, that's key.
09:59So, let's see what we can do here, Sam.
10:01Can I get a consonant, please, Rachel?
10:03Thank you, Sam. M.
10:04And another.
10:06S.
10:07And a vowel.
10:09O.
10:10And another.
10:12E.
10:13And another.
10:15I.
10:16And a consonant.
10:18T.
10:19And a vowel.
10:21A.
10:23Consonant.
10:25G.
10:26And one last vowel, please.
10:29Could be promising.
10:30A final.
10:31O.
10:32Thanks, Rachel.
10:56BUZZER
11:04Sam?
11:05Six.
11:06And Peter?
11:07Seven.
11:08Wow, OK. Sam, what's the six?
11:09Stooge.
11:10And, Stooge, and what do you find the seven?
11:12Egotism.
11:13Egotism.
11:14Well, you have a right to have an ego if you find that.
11:16Fantastic work. Egotism.
11:18APPLAUSE
11:20Wow, that pulled that out.
11:22I'm not seeing any other sevens. What have you got?
11:24No gaming, it's egotism.
11:25Those were the sevens that we had over here.
11:27Yeah, absolutely sensational.
11:28Well done from the champion, and you're picking these letters.
11:31Consonant, please, Rachel.
11:33Thank you, Peter.
11:34Y.
11:36And another.
11:37S.
11:39And a third.
11:40N.
11:42A vowel.
11:44I.
11:46And another.
11:47O.
11:48And a third.
11:50E.
11:52Consonant.
11:54W.
11:56A vowel.
11:58U.
12:00And a final consonant, please.
12:02And a final R.
12:04Here we go.
12:22MUSIC PLAYS
12:35Pens down, please, Peter.
12:37A six.
12:38And Sam.
12:39Six.
12:40OK, what's a six, Sam?
12:41Owners.
12:42Owners. And Peter?
12:43Senior.
12:44Good. Honours.
12:45Even.
12:46A deluge of sixes, Mr Hound.
12:48Yes, a deluge of sixes, but a couple of sevens, too.
12:52Snowier.
12:54And swinery.
12:56Swinery. Beautiful word for seven points.
13:00Right, 36 plays 12 as we get another numbers round.
13:04It won't be six small, or maybe it will be.
13:06Sam, you're picking.
13:07Can I get one large and five small, please, Rachel?
13:09You can indeed. You're not gambling at this stage.
13:12Playing it safe.
13:14We shall see how safe.
13:16We have five, eight, two, nine.
13:19Another five and a large one, 25.
13:22And the target to reach, 849.
13:25Big one, 849, numbers up.
13:27MUSIC PLAYS
13:47MUSIC STOPS
13:57Tricky times. Sam?
13:59850.
14:00Well done. One away. Peter?
14:02I have 848, but not written down.
14:04Well, you need to go first.
14:0625 x 5?
14:0825 x 5. 125.
14:10And then the other 5 x 2?
14:13The other 5 x 2 is 10.
14:15Plus the 9 is 19.
14:1719.
14:18Take that away from the 125.
14:20106.
14:21And then multiply by 8?
14:22Yep, 848. One away.
14:24There you go. That's how you get one less.
14:26How do you get one more?
14:289 minus 5 is 4.
14:309 minus 5, 4.
14:32Times by 8 gives you 32.
14:34Yep.
14:35Add the 2 for 34.
14:3734.
14:38And times by 25 should give you 850.
14:40It does indeed. Gets you one the other way.
14:43One either side, Rach. Can we meet in the middle?
14:45You have to leave it with me. One either side as well.
14:48OK, I'll leave that with Rach.
14:50She's at this moment in the Friday.
14:52Whoever's in Dictionary Corner, we get to know them better.
14:54Susie asks you a question. She's not here.
14:56Rachel asks you a question. She's working out 849.
14:59Yeah.
15:00So that just leaves you and I to have a little chat.
15:02Lovely. Bring out the pipes!
15:05Do you know what? I just want to know more about...
15:08Because you have one of these careers
15:10that doesn't seem to be led by any sense of what?
15:13By any sense, leave it at that.
15:15Yeah, but you know what I mean? You're very free spirit.
15:17Becoming a circus master, a ringmaster of the circus,
15:20is unbelievable.
15:22Just tell me a little bit more about the experience of doing that
15:25over the last, as you say, lot of months.
15:27Because that is a career turn of epic proportions.
15:30Basically, like a lot of people during the pandemic,
15:33there was a question that people asked themselves of,
15:36is what I'm doing what I really want to be doing?
15:38And then I think if you layer that up with being 40 years old,
15:41if you layer that up with the crunch being
15:43that you're suddenly locked in a house with somebody you're married to
15:46and all of the things you've told yourself about needing to carry on,
15:49all of that falls apart.
15:51I just really did find myself at a point where I thought,
15:54wow, I really am just standing at the North Pole.
15:58Every direction is south from here.
16:01So which way do I go?
16:03And I'd worked with somebody who worked at a circus
16:05who told me you can just apply for jobs at circuses.
16:07I was going to ask, how in the world do you...?
16:09What, do you just ring them up?
16:11Is there a particular circus recruitment agency?
16:13I got a load of email addresses from just Googling it.
16:17Wow.
16:18And wrote a pretty decent email and nobody replied to me,
16:22apart from two people who both replied to me within about two minutes.
16:26And one of them, within four days,
16:28had offered me a job for a charity thing they were doing.
16:33And I had to sort of unexplain to him, like,
16:35no, no, mate, I'm asking... I want a job job.
16:38And, you know, it's a comedian who goes on stage,
16:41as you've done, you know, you get a certain thing back.
16:44But a circus crowd is entirely different.
16:48Well, I mean, you know, the joy of it is that you come into the big top
16:52and the first thing we tell everyone is,
16:54once you step inside this circus tent, the outside world no longer exists.
16:58Instead, you're now in a world where the impossible becomes possible
17:02and even death is defied!
17:05And I think if you can shout that at a room full of strangers every day,
17:09your life's probably in a pretty good place.
17:11It is magic. Wonderful. Thank you, Rufus.
17:13APPLAUSE
17:14Yes, cut me. Cut me.
17:18Let's get back to my ringmaster. How are you doing with 849?
17:21Yes, I found it.
17:22Well, if the 25 was a 50, it would have been easy.
17:25So all you have to do is say 25 x 2 is 50 and then it falls out.
17:299 plus 8, 17. I know!
17:32850.
17:34And then 5 over 5 gives you 1 to take away for 849.
17:38APPLAUSE
17:41Once you see that one, you see it. I know, it's annoying, isn't it?
17:44It's a kick-yourself moment for me there. Very much so.
17:47Right, 43 plays 19.
17:49Our champion going great guns, and it's your letters.
17:52Constant, please, Rachel. Thank you, Peter.
17:54H. And another.
17:57S. And a third.
18:00R. And a vowel.
18:03E. And another.
18:06I. And a third.
18:08E. A consonant.
18:11M. A vowel.
18:14I. And a final consonant, please.
18:18And a final T.
18:20Half a minute.
18:27ELECTRONIC MUSIC PLAYS
18:51Peter, how do you do? Try a 7.
18:53OK. And Sam? 7.
18:55OK, Peter, what are you trying? Mithers.
18:58Sam, are you trying something else? Mystia.
19:00Mystia. And mithers. Very good indeed.
19:037 points each. Rufus, found anything better?
19:06Yeah, there is an 8 there.
19:08Aetherism.
19:10Oh, I'll need an X. The aether is.
19:12But what about aetherism?
19:14Aetherism is addiction to aether.
19:17And also later was used in poisoning.
19:20So, yeah, there had been aetherism.
19:23I thought it was going to be to do with, like, the aether,
19:26the spirits or whatever, but no.
19:28It turned out to be a lot more sinister and intriguing.
19:30Yes, indeed. Thank you very much.
19:32Right, next round, and Sam's picking the letters.
19:35Can we start with a vowel this time, Rachel?
19:37Thank you, Sam. A.
19:39And a consonant, please.
19:41L. And another consonant.
19:44T. And a vowel.
19:47I. And another.
19:51E.
19:53And a consonant.
19:55K.
19:57And a vowel.
19:59A.
20:01And a consonant.
20:03G.
20:05And one last vowel, please.
20:07And lastly, O.
20:09I'm done.
20:20MUSIC PLAYS
20:40Time's up. Pens down. Sam?
20:42I'll risk a seven. Go for it. Why not, Peter?
20:45I'll risk an eight. OK.
20:47Sam, the seven?
20:49Kiltage. Kiltage.
20:51And Peter? Goat-like.
20:53Well, we'll find out, first of all, is kiltage in the dictionary?
20:56Sadly, no. I mean this in the nicest possible way,
20:59but with your facial hair. Oh, Charlie.
21:01You are a little goat-like!
21:03Unbelievable. You're calling me some kind of kid.
21:06Very good. Goat-like is fine, yeah?
21:08Yes, absolutely. Eight goat-like. Thank you.
21:13Great points for Peter.
21:15Bit of bad news as well.
21:17Let's go back to the numbers and the champions chosen
21:19so we know what we're going to get.
21:21Six small, please. Six small ones.
21:23Sometimes people, when they have a lead, they let up, but not our Peter.
21:26Right, six little ones. Here we go.
21:28They are five, four,
21:30eight, nine,
21:32six, and one.
21:35And the target, 382.
21:37382, numbers up.
21:48MUSIC CONTINUES
22:09382, Peter.
22:11383.
22:13OK, one away. What about yourself, Sam?
22:16395, not written down.
22:18Too far away anyway, so it won't count.
22:20Still closer than many of us, don't worry about that.
22:22But one away for seven points, Peter.
22:24So eight times six is 48.
22:26Six is 48.
22:27And then nine minus one is another eight.
22:29Yeah. Multiply those together.
22:31Yeah.
22:32And then you have five minus four to take away.
22:35Four. You do indeed, four one away.
22:37Did you get it bang on?
22:39I might have done. Let's see it.
22:41If you say six times eight is 48,
22:44four plus one is five.
22:47Take that away for 43.
22:49Times it by the nine for 387
22:52and take away the actual 5382.
22:57Look at our three-time teaser.

25:21After nine and hinnies are also there for seven,
25:23but nothing better.

26:35OK, what have you got, Pete?
26:36Latin.
26:37Struggling beyond fives,
26:38but I think Rufus Hines is going to save us here.
26:41Unfortunately, we can't have Latin,
26:43because the L in Latin is capitalised.
26:45So, unfortunately, there.
26:47Yeah, several fives, but joint, great.
26:51Yeah, nothing better.
26:5277 plays 26.

28:09Re-reads.
28:10OK, just to be a little bit smart.
28:12I feel you've been a little bit of a smart bottom there.
28:15Yes, I love rounds like that.
28:17You know, some people might go...
28:19But there you go, seven points all round.
28:21Well, listen, you could break the magic 100 today.
28:24We will see how we get on.
28:26But it's your letters now, Peter.
28:28Consonant, please, Rachel?
28:29Thank you, Peter.

28:57MUSIC PLAYS
29:04MUSIC CONTINUES
29:27Peter?
29:28Seven.
29:29And how did you get on, Sam?
29:30Seven.
29:31Peter?
29:32Sam?
29:33Exactly the same.
29:34Yeah.
29:35Well done.
29:36Another one of those situations where it came out at the start?
29:39I found faint as well and then realised over was there.
29:42Yeah.
29:43Then you're kind of wondering, you know,
29:45would over-faint be a thing if you were diving in a football match?
29:48Or, you know, did Victorian women take into the couch over-faint?
29:51Yeah.
29:52And then, of course, you look and you realise,
29:54why would I look up that stupid...? That's a stupid idea.
29:56Not all words have to be in the dictionary to exist.
29:59Susie points this out quite a lot.
30:01So over-faint may not be in the dictionary,
30:03but it's a beautiful turn of phrase.
30:05Yeah.
30:06Right, fantastic. Two rounds left. 91 plays 40.
30:09We know who's won, but loads still up for grabs.
30:12Can Sam get half a century?
30:14Can Peter break the tonne?
30:16It's final numbers.
30:18And Sam's picking them.
30:20Can I get one large and five small, please, Rachel?
30:22You can indeed. Final numbers of the week.
30:24One big five-knot.
30:26And the last selection is three, six,
30:30eight, three, and the big one, 25.
30:34And the target to reach, 638.
30:37638, numbers up.
31:00MUSIC PLAYS
31:10Time's up. 638. How are you getting on, Sam?
31:12628.
31:13OK, ten away.
31:15Still within the margin of error. Peter?
31:18634, not fully good, no.
31:20OK, off you go, four away.
31:22Eight times three is 24.
31:25Eight times three, 24.
31:27Plus one.
31:2825.
31:29Multiplied by the other 25.
31:31Multiplied by 25, 625.
31:33And then add the six and the three.
31:35And then the six and the other three you haven't used.
31:37634.
31:39634, four away.
31:41Tricky one, Rach, how are you getting on?
31:43One away, I think. You have to leave it with me.
31:46OK, will do. Not much time left.
31:48We've just got the conundrum to come.
31:50Still in the same situation.
31:51Peter's up to 98, tantalisingly close.
31:54But a nice conundrum for you, Sam, on your way out.
31:56We'll get you the 50 up.
31:57So, fingers on the buzzers as we reveal today's Countdown Conundrum.
32:10Peter, to break the tonne.
32:11Reachable.
32:12Let's have a look.
32:14And 100 is reachable.
32:18108, fantastic.
32:21Well, Sam, you're going to have to get your Batman cloak and leave.
32:24It's a bit of a shame.
32:25But we've enjoyed playing with you today. Have you had a good time?
32:27I have, indeed. It's been lots of fun. Thanks for having me.
32:30It's been really nice to have. Friday's a good day to be on.
32:33And no shame in that performance, because Peter, wow,
32:36108 in your second performance, two wins.
32:38And Rufus Hound, very short notice, of course, for Susie being off.
32:42It's been lovely having you. Thank you.
32:44I know it might sound daft, but if you are a fan of this show
32:47and you've spent any time thinking about tactics and numbers
32:50and things like that, to see somebody in the chair
32:52who genuinely loves the game is really heartening
32:54as a fan of the show, so thanks.
32:56Well, thank you for saying that.
32:57The tactics of Countdown is what makes it unique.
33:00It really does. You know, like, what you declare, what you pick.
33:04But the numbers is 40 points.
33:06And we see with Peter a great example of how you can just,
33:10at those perfect moments, tilt the game in your favour,
33:13put pressure on with six small ones.
33:15I don't think you can be an OctoChamp if you're not good at numbers.
33:18I don't know if the celebrity versions of this show
33:21for all four are still on the...
33:23Like, are they all four player or...?
33:25No, my lawyer had them taken down.
33:27Oh, really?
33:29But Rachel gives some tips on that show
33:31about how to play with the numbers to get kind of odds
33:34from evens and stuff that even to this day
33:36I kind of think about when I play this game.
33:38Well, on that note, let's go to the Queen of Numbers, 638.
33:42Should have listened to my own tips.
33:44If you say 25 times 3 is 75,
33:48add the other 3 and 1 for 79,
33:51times that by 8 for 632,
33:55and you can add on a 6 and have a weekend off.
33:57Yes!
34:02And that's exactly what we're going to do,
34:04but we will be here on Monday, three regular shows,
34:07and then we begin the Christmas countdown
34:10to crowning this series champion.
34:13Rachel and I, at the very least, will be here on Monday.
