01:00Living on Walton's Mountain, we were always in touch with the motion of life.
01:22Growth and change, loss and gain were natural and expected.
01:28We saw the green leaves turn to gold and then fall to the ground, crumpled and gray.
01:34But all of us knew that when spring came again, life would renew itself.
01:40But one summer, we were faced with an unexpected kind of change that made us all wonder if
01:45the future was really a thing to look forward to.
01:48You imitating me sitting there reading that book?
01:51Yeah, we promised we'd bring back enough fish for dinner and so far you haven't been much
01:54help.
01:55Alright, alright, but take a look at that.
01:57Isn't that something?
01:58It sure is.
02:00What is it?
02:01It's a recorder.
02:02I'm going to make one.
02:03Let me see.
02:04See there?
02:05You know how to play it?
02:10My pa taught me when I was a kid.
02:13You already play guitar.
02:14If you want to be a singer, what do you have to play another instrument for?
02:17Well, because it sounds so beautiful.
02:19I'd like to learn how to play every instrument there is.
02:21You're just going to have to end up playing for your daddy's band, aren't you?
02:25Well, that's what I'm planning.
02:27Hey, Seth, is it very hard to learn to play?
02:31No.
02:32You want to learn?
02:33Sure.
02:34Well, I'll teach you.
02:35You'll love it.
02:36Okay.
02:37But first, we've got to try to catch some fish here.
02:39Yeah.
02:40I've got two down here and they're still there.
02:44You and your mama, there's going to be 13 of us at dinnertime and so we've got our work
02:48cut out for us before we think about going home.
02:51Alright.
02:53They're out there.
03:00Hey.
03:06Good player.
03:11See there?
03:12All you had to do was ask.
03:14Come on, bite.
03:18That was good whiz, Jason.
03:21Grandpa, is it time yet?
03:24I was appointed timekeeper and I'll tell you when it's time.
03:28Eat your dessert.
03:29Maybe we should turn the radio on.
03:31Don't fret, Seth.
03:32We've got time.
03:33Well, the radio's got to warm up.
03:34I'll turn the station on.
03:35That's a good idea.
03:36Alright.
03:37Is everybody in the whole world going to hear Seth's papa sing?
03:40Everybody listens to Grand Ole Opry and that's a fair amount of people.
03:43Hey, hey, come on everybody.
03:44The program's starting.
03:45I was just about to make that announcement.
03:51You go along with them or you'll miss it.
03:53There's no hurry, Mrs. Walton.
03:55Red won't be the first one.
03:56Let me give you a hand.
04:00I can't thank you enough.
04:01We'll give you a few bites for dinner.
04:03Make it more of a celebration.
04:05It's fun for us too.
04:06Are you really excited?
04:07Not as good as my pa and his boys.
04:09Nobody is.
04:16Thank you, Willie Small, for that fine addition.
04:19And now, ladies and gentlemen, for their first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry,
04:24Red Turner and his country boys.
04:26Mama, come on.
04:27Hurry up.
04:28Papa's going to be next.
04:29You go ahead, Wilma.
04:30We can finish up.
04:34Well, it might have been a lot better for everyone if Red hadn't worked away from home so much
04:39and seen more of his wife and that boy.
04:41I'm sure Red feels the same way.
04:42He's a good man.
04:43I'm sure Red feels the same way.
04:44He's a good man.
04:45Let's go.
04:46We can do this later.
05:05Is this Papa inside the radio?
05:07He's in Nashville singing into a microphone.
05:10Like Bing Crosby?
05:11Yeah, like Bing Crosby.
05:12Oh, my gosh.
05:32Isn't he great?
05:33Isn't my pa just plain great?
05:35He's a down wonderful.
05:37Mighty good picket to sing there, Red.
05:39Nice to have you with us.
05:40Now, where are you boys headed for when you leave Nashville?
05:43We got two weeks of state fairs.
05:45And then I got a big surprise.
05:47Hey, out there, Wilma and you, Seth.
05:50That's my wife and son, folks.
05:52Hey to you both.
05:53And I'll be seeing you real soon.
05:55You look for me to be back home in Walpus Mountain just two short weeks from today.
06:02Hot diggity.
06:03My pa's coming home.
06:04My pa's coming home.
06:06Jason, get your fingers limbered up.
06:08I need my help and assistance when I audition for my pa.
06:11You're auditioning for your pa?
06:12Sure.
06:13You said I could try out when I was growing some.
06:15Oh, boy.
06:16Seth, you're getting overheated.
06:20Oh, Mama, I'm fine.
06:21Just think, I might finally get a chance to join up and be a regular member of pa's band.
06:25Well, you still got a touch of that chill you had.
06:27Sit down and relax.
06:28You want to be all better when your pa gets here.
06:31All right.
06:35Papa's coming home.
06:37That recorder we were talking about?
06:38You bet.
06:39What do you think you're going to be playing while I'm singing?
06:41Hey, we're going to have to get us some wood.
06:43Do we need a special kind?
06:44To make a recorder, you need apple.
06:46Good, seasoned apple wood.
06:47That's right.
06:48How'd you know that, sir?
06:49My own granddaddy.
06:51He played a recorder.
06:53It sounded real pretty.
06:55Only in those days they called it a flipple flute.
06:58Sipple flute.
06:59Flipple?
07:00Flopple?
07:01Flopple flute.
07:03Flipple flute.
07:04Flopple flute.
07:05Flopple.
07:06Flipple flute.
07:07Flipple flute.
07:08Flipple flute.
07:09And I know where there's just such a tree to suit your purpose.
07:13It's an old Macintosh apple, way up in the high meadow.
07:16And its old limbs are already soaked through with music.
07:20Driven in through the winter snows, the rains, and the song of the birds.
07:27Can we go tomorrow?
07:28I can.
07:29Can you, John boy?
07:31Well, if it's early enough, yeah.
07:32Well, let's meet at Ike's store at five.
07:34In the morning?
07:35Yeah, lazy bones.
07:36It's an hour.
07:37You do your best never to see.
07:39Five's okay with me.
07:41I don't think that's a good idea, Seth.
07:43It's a long climb up to that meadow, and you've been awfully tired lately.
07:47Oh, mama, please.
07:49Oh, all right.
07:52But if you're all going out that early, we'd better get home so everyone can get some rest.
07:56All right.
07:57Sounds like a good idea.
07:58Thank you so much for stopping by, Mrs. Walton.
08:00It's so nice seeing you again, Wilma.
08:02Thank you, Lydia.
08:03You come again real soon, Wilma.
08:05I'll run you home.
08:06Thank you, John.
08:09See you in the morning.
08:10See you in the morning, John.
08:11Bye.
08:12Bye.
08:13See you later.
08:34Hey, this recorder, how long do you think it'll take to make it?
08:36Oh, about ten days if I work on it real hard.
08:39When do you think I can start learning to play it?
08:41Just as soon as you want.
08:42Really?
08:43Sure.
08:44Oh, good.
08:45Hey, come on, you two.
08:46We haven't got all day.
08:47I'm coming.
08:48Okay, Seth, I'll race you to the tree.
08:49Come on.
08:50I'm coming.
08:51I'm coming.
09:04Son, you're too short of breath.
09:06You've been smoking behind the barn.
09:08Oh, no, it's nothing.
09:10It's just that cold I had last night.
09:12Yeah, there she is.
09:14Yeah.
09:16Oh.
09:18Now, like your grandpa said, it even smells like it can sing.
09:23Well, there's a lot of branches on her.
09:26Any one you favor in particular?
09:29Well, this one here looks just about perfect.
09:31Here I go.
09:51Seth?
09:54Seth, are you all right?
09:56What's the matter?
09:57I don't know.
09:59What's the matter?
10:00I don't know.
10:01I don't know.
10:02I think he's fainted.
10:03You better go get Daddy.
10:04Will he be all right?
10:05I don't know, Jason.
10:06Go get Daddy.
10:08Seth?
10:16Seth?
10:20Seth?
10:24Seth?
10:26John boy, you're going to be all right.
10:29You just fainted.
10:30Now, you just take it easy.
10:47I don't understand it, Olivia.
10:50Dr. Vance never insisted on seeing a specialist
10:53any of the other times that Seth was feeling poorly.
10:56He's a very cautious man.
10:57That should be some comfort to you.
11:02Mrs. Turner, would you come in, please?
11:24What time do you reckon it's getting to be?
11:27Always seems longer when you just wait.
11:35Mrs. Walden, would you come in, please?
11:38Mrs. Turner needs you.
11:53Wilma?
12:00Is he really sick?
12:10Do you know what leukemia is, John boy?
12:15No.
12:18It's a disease of the blood.
12:23What can you do about it?
12:25Nothing.
12:27Nothing?
12:28Not today.
12:30One day, maybe research will come up with an answer.
12:33But we have to wait.
12:35But, I mean...
12:38Seth doesn't have much time left.
12:41He'll live another year more.
12:46There's not a blessed thing any of us can do for him.
12:53I know.
13:12Would you let me come in and help you fix some supper, Wilma?
13:15No, thank you, Olivia.
13:17I'd just like to get Seth settled down.
13:19You sure?
13:21Come on, Seth.
13:24Go in the house, Wilma.
13:28Seth?
13:30John boy, stop him!
13:34Don't worry, Wilma. He'll be back.
14:24Oh!
14:32It's so dark now.
14:34And cold. He doesn't even have a jacket.
14:39John boy, go after him, please.
14:41See if you can find him.
14:44I don't want to do that, ma'am.
14:47Wilma?
14:49Seth?
14:58Sorry I worried you, mama.
15:01Come inside.
15:02You go on in. I'll be in there in just a minute.
15:06But it's cold.
15:07In a minute, mama. I gotta talk to John boy.
15:19I need you to do me a favor.
15:22Sure.
15:24All the excitement the other day. We never did get that applewood.
15:28Could you get it for me?
15:30I need it now.
15:31Yeah, I'll get it first thing in the morning.
15:36Could you tell Jason I want to start him on those lessons right away?
15:39Yeah, I'll do that.
15:40I'll be back in a minute.
15:41Okay.
15:42What's happening?
15:45Could you tell Jason I want to start him on those lessons right away?
15:49Okay.
15:52Seth, your mama's worried about you.
15:56I'm coming in now.
15:59Good night.
16:00Good night.
16:12Good night.
16:21And then grandma said...
16:31Jimbo, what's this word?
16:33Rebecca, and it's a name, not a word, stupid.
16:36Why don't you talk to your sister like that?
16:38She's just trying to learn.
16:43Okay, it's about time.
16:57You've been gone for hours.
17:00They must have given that child every test under the sun.
17:04He's beginning to worry about you.
17:06He must be starving, old woman.
17:07Why don't you stop your muttering and feed him?
17:09Yeah, I kept your supper warm for you.
17:11No, thank you, grandma.
17:12Nothing for me.
17:13Me either, grandma.
17:16I bet you lost your appetite.
17:17Something really must be wrong.
17:21What is it, Liv?
17:22You're shaking.
17:23What does the doctor say?
17:27I don't know.
17:28I don't know.
17:29What does the doctor say?
17:35He said that...
17:37Jimbo, Elizabeth, would you go to bed, please?
17:39Mama.
17:40Please.
17:54What is it, Liv? What's wrong?
17:56Seth, John, he's...
17:59He's what?
18:03He's gonna die.
18:05Oh, Lord.
18:06Why, he's just a youngster.
18:10He's the same age as me.
18:16Seth's not sick. He...
18:19He's just tired out.
18:21He had that cold. You remember what his mama said?
18:23He's just gotta chill.
18:24The doctor says he has leukemia, Jason.
18:27The doctor is wrong. He's just gotta chill.
18:29Jason.
18:32It's a blood disease.
18:33You can't cure it.
18:47Get out of here.
18:50Go on, get out.
18:51What's the matter with you?
18:52Come on, all of you, get out of here.
18:54Go on.
18:58What's wrong with Jason?
18:59Seems like he's in a bad mood.
19:01He just kicked us all out of his room.
19:03Don't worry about Jason right now.
19:10Noise.
19:11I'll go talk to him.
19:16Sit down, Joe. I want to tell you something.
19:27Jason?
19:36Jason?
19:40Jason?
19:58What's he doing, making the scarf?
20:00I don't know.
20:01Here he comes.
20:02Here he comes.
20:03All right, who's gonna be it?
20:04Elizabeth is gonna be it.
20:05Why me all the time?
20:06Because you're the youngest.
20:07Yeah.
20:08I bet you can see.
20:09No, she can't see.
20:10You can't see, can you?
20:11Don't peek. Don't peek. Turn around.
20:13One, two, three.
20:15Woo-hoo!
20:16Woo-hoo!
20:17Woo-hoo!
20:18Woo-hoo!
20:19Woo-hoo!
20:20Woo-hoo!
20:21Woo-hoo!
20:22Woo-hoo!
20:23Woo-hoo!
20:24Woo-hoo!
20:25Woo-hoo!
20:26Aaron's it.
20:27I'm it.
20:28Okay, Aaron.
20:30It's really beautiful.
20:35Oh, that wood feels like silk.
20:45My pa's gonna be getting home any day now.
20:48Jason and me are gonna have to get started on those lessons.
20:50Did you know I was coming over today?
20:53Yeah, I told him.
20:54You're really, really close to your pa, aren't you?
20:57Yeah.
21:00You know, sometimes I don't see him for months at a time, but...
21:04I can always sort of picture where he is and what he's doing.
21:11Mama needs him now real bad.
21:14It's gonna be hard for her.
21:16Alone with pa working away so much, you know.
21:24I don't see how you can be so calm about this.
21:27I'm not calm.
21:28I mean, if it was me, I'd be wanting to yell and scream and carry on.
21:31I did.
21:34Remember when I ran off alone?
21:39But when I was all yelled out and...
21:42in the quiet there,
21:45I started to hear things.
21:48You know, like...
21:50the whippoorwills calling,
21:52leaves rustling in the wind,
21:55berries dropping off the trees,
22:00train crossing the trestle up at Rockfish.
22:06You know what I hate to give up most?
22:10Those sounds.
22:15What would you miss most if it was you?
22:22With me, it's hearing things.
22:26I just can't imagine...
22:28not hearing.
22:33That's why I want to finish this.
22:37I want to fill it with all the sounds I won't be hearing.
22:40And then somebody will be able to take it
22:43and play it
22:44and put those sounds into the air.
22:47And they will never die.
22:54Hey, Jason, come here. Take a look at this.
22:56It's almost done.
22:59I can't. I gotta get in the house. I got work to do.
23:05Jason.
23:17Why won't he talk to me?
23:21Because he's scared?
23:26Because he feels guilty?
23:28About what?
23:34Because it's you instead of him?
23:37Why should he?
23:39He doesn't want to die any more than I do.
23:41Don't you think there are times
23:42when I wish it could be anybody else but me?
23:46And I feel guilty about that.
23:53I wish he could understand that.
24:00I'd like to teach him how to play the recorder.
24:07I wish I could.
24:11Come on, play Blind Man's Bluff. You too, John-Boy. Come on.
24:14Okay, I'm coming.
24:15Come on, young boy.
24:20John-Boy's it.
24:25Come on, John-Boy, now don't pee.
24:27I'm not gonna pee.
24:28Wait a minute.
24:33Here we go. Okay. One.
24:38The children sound so happy.
24:40Don't they?
24:43I wish Seth had had brothers and sisters.
24:46It's been hard for him being an only child
24:48with his pa always so much.
24:54Libby?
24:59Why do you give up a child?
25:04Why do you let go of a life that came from your life?
25:10I don't know, Wilma.
25:17I pray.
25:19And I've talked with Reverend Fordway.
25:26And I'm afraid.
25:28Afraid I won't be able to hang on.
25:31When does Red get back?
25:33Tomorrow.
25:35Or the next day.
25:40He doesn't know anything about this.
25:44I don't know how I'm gonna tell him.
26:01What are we doing?
26:04I got Seth playing with them.
26:11Stop it!
26:14Stop it!
26:19I should never have let you come here today.
26:21Mama, please.
26:22Seth, I asked you to save your energy.
26:24Mama, stop it.
26:25Seth, please.
26:26John-Boy, you must be crazy to let this happen.
26:28I'm sorry, ma'am. I forgot myself.
26:30It was all my idea.
26:32You know what condition he's in.
26:33Have you taken leave of your senses?
26:35No, ma'am. I'm sorry.
26:36Mama, stop it.
26:37What do you want me to do, just sit in a chair all day
26:39and watch everybody else outside?
26:41I'm not gonna just stay inside the house
26:43and watch life passing by the window.
26:45I want to be part of it.
26:47You know what you're doing, Mama?
26:49You're making me feel like I'm laid out in the parlor already.
26:52I'm 17 years old, Mama.
26:54I'm not gonna get to be 18.
26:56I want what's left to me.
26:58I want all of it, Mama.
27:07Mama.
27:21Mama.
27:23I'm sorry I yelled.
27:26Mama.
27:29We'll go home now.
27:32We could go up on the porch and rest for a while.
27:35You don't understand.
27:37He has to lie down.
27:39John boy.
27:41It's all right.
27:42Listen, why don't you come by later?
27:46Not today, John boy. Please.
27:48I've had enough excitement for today.
27:52Wilma, won't you let John boy drive you home?
27:56I'm fine.
27:57Thank you anyway. I'll be fine.
28:05I'll be fine.
28:35Does it scare you, dying?
28:37Sometimes.
28:39Does it scare you?
28:42I guess it used to, but time has a way of taking care of things, son.
28:46You get older, you realize that everything has a beginning,
28:50a time to be, and an end.
28:53I know all that.
28:54It's just not something I need to be reminded of every day.
28:59I've come to kind of a private understanding
29:03that dying is a natural part of living.
29:08It just seems very unfair to me
29:10that somebody like Seth,
29:12who has so much to look forward to,
29:14can all of a sudden have everything taken away from him.
29:18And then he has to live the rest of his life knowing
29:20that no matter what he does, none of his dreams can ever come true.
29:23I don't understand that.
29:25I mean, I look forward to going to college.
29:29And I look forward to becoming a writer
29:31and having a family.
29:34Everything I'm doing now in my life is like a preparation for what's to come.
29:39If I didn't have any of those things to look forward to,
29:41I don't think I could take any pleasure in living at all.
29:44Seth doesn't have any of those things to look forward to, son.
29:46He's trying to take pleasure in life.
29:51It just seems pointless to me.
29:57John, boy, there's a lot of people walking around
30:00feeling very disappointed and unhappy about life.
30:04They were counting so much in the future they forgot to live their lives.
30:08Seth understands something we should remember.
30:15If I didn't have any future to look forward to,
30:20I would just want to curl up in a corner and forget everything.
30:23John, boy, somehow I don't believe you.
30:54Ma'am, I'd like to see Seth. Is he in?
30:57I'm sorry, John, boy. He's resting.
31:00Oh. Uh, ma'am, these are his. I brought them for him. He left them at the house.
31:06I'll say he gets it.
31:14Uh, ma'am, I really would like to see him, even if it's just for a moment.
31:18Some other time, John, boy.
31:19Tell him you were here.
31:20Oh, thank you.
31:22You're very welcome.
31:26We'll give it to him.
31:29Lloyd.
31:39How are you?
31:40Fine, ma'am.
31:42Mary was looking for you.
31:45Why?
31:47You weren't home all day.
31:48Hey, everybody! Seth, Wilma, I'm home!
32:12Hey, you go on now. I'll see you later.
32:23All right.
32:24Hey, you've been a bunch of good old boys to travel with. Goodbye!
32:29John, boy, is that you?
32:30Hey, Ray.
32:31Hey, don't run off now. I want you to see what I brought Seth.
32:34Pa!
32:37Seth, how are you, you son of a gun?
32:40Oh, Lord, you must have grown a foot. What's your ma been feeding you?
32:43Hey, here.
32:47Hey, just right.
32:49Will you see what I got in the box?
32:51Got the rest of the outfit, just like mine, only brand new.
32:55John, boy, will you look at that?
32:56Hey, where's your ma?
32:58I got a brand new, latest fashion, beautiful new dress for her.
33:05Hey, Wilma! Oh, it's good to see you.
33:09Oh, Wilma, honey, it's so good to be home.
33:16It's so fine to see you all.
33:18Come on.
33:39Seth?
33:48John?
33:49Where you headed?
33:51Ain't no place special. Just trying to think things out.
33:55Fine. Get in.
34:15I'm going to thank you, John.
34:19You and Libby and the kids...
34:22been real good friends to Wilma.
34:26The boy.
34:30The son.
34:33Fred, I wish there was something I could say to help.
34:35Yeah, I know.
34:40You know what the worst part is?
34:45It's seeing the boy so quiet.
34:49He's always so full of beans, always laughing, singing.
34:54Wasn't so quiet the other night when he heard you on the radio.
34:57Should have seen him, Red.
34:59He was proud as could be.
35:01You know, it just seems that he ought to be having the best time he could now.
35:10You know, you should have seen him the other day.
35:13I brought him home a costume, you know, like I wear when I'm working.
35:19His eyes just lit up like sunshine when he seen it.
35:23One joy not show yours ever since he's been old enough to walk.
35:27Well, I couldn't do John.
35:33I don't know, Red.
35:35First thing this ever happened to my family was last Thanksgiving.
35:41One boy got hurt real bad.
35:45There's a chance he could have died.
35:48His exams were coming up and allowed him to go to college.
35:52The doctor said if he took those exams, the strain might be too much for him.
35:56Did he take them?
35:57Yeah, he did.
36:00We talked about it.
36:04We realized those exams were as important to him as life.
36:10Well, they was his life, Red.
36:16I know what Seth wants.
36:20I guess what I'm looking for is the courage to give it to him.
36:36Take care, Red.
36:38I'll see what I can do.
36:40Thanks.
37:08Red?
37:20Where'd you go?
37:22Hi, honey.
37:24How are you?
37:26Where'd you go?
37:29Wilma, I went into town and saw Doc Baines.
37:33Why?
37:40What for?
37:45Wilma, I've been thinking about a lot of things.
37:50There's no use us trying to keep that boy up there in his bed.
37:55I want to get out of here.
37:57Out of this house and out of this waiting game we're playing.
38:01I just want to keep him as long as I can.
38:04So do I.
38:06But I want to do what he wants to do.
38:09Give him the things he never had.
38:12He's sick.
38:14He's gonna die.
38:17Are you trying to drive him to his grave sooner than he has to go?
38:23I just want to give him the things he hadn't had.
38:28A real family life with his mom and his daddy.
38:33And I want him doing what he loves to do.
38:37Playing his music.
38:39Playing with me in the group.
38:41No!
38:42Yes.
38:44Then when he's gone...
38:48We'll have real good memories.
38:53Not be locked up with some picture of him laying there in his bed waiting.
39:00We can be a real family.
39:04You, me and our boy.
39:08Loving each other.
39:11Making whatever time we got left really mean something.
39:16I'm glad.
39:23I love you, boy Will.
39:27We'll make real good memories.
39:31He won't miss having anything he ever really wanted.
39:46I love you, Will.
40:16I love you, Will.
40:46Morning, John boy.
40:56Seth?
41:07Well, things are a lot better now.
41:10Pa and me and Mama are leaving.
41:13I heard that.
41:15That's why I wanted to see you.
41:19Would you make sure Jason gets this?
41:24Why don't you give it to him?
41:30We'll just make sure he gets it.
41:33Maybe after we've gone.
41:36Okay.
41:43Well, I'll send you all lots of postcards.
41:45Okay.
41:46You might even be hearing me on the radio.
41:48Paul's gonna have me singing with the band.
41:50I'm sure glad things worked out that way, Seth.
41:54I never thought they would.
41:57But things are gonna be real good now.
42:01I hope so.
42:18Have a seat.
42:44Grandpa, I'm worried about my brother.
42:46How so? Hasn't he seen Seth lately?
42:49Won't even talk to him.
42:50And they're leaving real soon.
42:52Yes, sir. I'd appreciate it if you'd speak with him.
42:54Oh, I'd be glad to, John boy.
42:57Seth finished this recorder.
42:58It's a gift for Jason.
43:00I think you'd best give it to him yourself.
43:02But, uh, I'll be right along.
43:21Jason, this is for you from Seth.
43:35He wanted you to have it specially.
43:49Hey, Jason.
43:50I need your help to dig up the garden.
43:53Find enough worms, maybe we can all go fishing.
43:56Hey, what you got here?
43:59It's from Seth.
44:01I reckon it's the recorder.
44:03Oh.
44:04Oh, that thimble flute from the old apple tree.
44:08Why, it is nice of Seth to give you that.
44:12I don't want it.
44:13Why not?
44:18Seth wanted to give you something important so that you could always remember him.
44:22Now, if I was going to die, that wouldn't be so important.
44:26You've known me ever since you was born.
44:28Got a big store of memories.
44:30Any time you wanted to think back, remember, you could come up with something.
44:34But you're not going to die.
44:35Sure I am.
44:37And in time, so are you.
44:40And everyone that you love and cherish.
44:43And every time anyone goes away, it is going to hurt.
44:47But this time with Seth, it is different.
44:52Why is it different?
44:54Somehow it seems unjust.
44:57You're a little young yet to know the full weight of injustice.
45:01Would have been much fairer for it to have been me than Seth.
45:05Grandpa.
45:06That's true, I'm 72 years old.
45:08I've lived a full, rich life.
45:11I've got to do just about everything I wanted to in my life.
45:14Except for one or two things your grandma disapproves of.
45:17It's not fair for anybody to have to die.
45:20The truth is, Jason, it's got nothing to do with fairness.
45:23Why couldn't it be somebody who's mean or bad?
45:26That's one of the great mysteries.
45:28Who gets chosen and why.
45:31But it happens all the same.
45:34And you won't like yourself, Jason, unless you face up to it.
45:38Square.
45:39And grieve for him.
45:41In your heart.
45:43And to his face.
45:45That way it's fair to you and to him.
45:51You're getting so big it's hard to comfort you like I used to.
45:58Just think about it.
46:13I love you.
46:43I love you.
47:13I love you.
47:43I love you.
47:58Wait a minute, you've got to keep it all the way down.
48:00Either take it up or put it down.
48:02Okay, starting over.
48:05As time went on, there were other occasions that necessitated our grieving.
48:11And I often think that this early brush with total loss
48:15made us better able to face those which were to come after.
48:29You're getting sun real good, Jason.
48:32Thank you, Daddy.
48:34Goodnight, Daddy. Goodnight, Mom.
48:36Goodnight, Jason.
48:37It sounds like Walton's Mountain would sound if it could sing.
48:40Goodnight, Jason.
48:41Goodnight, Erin.
48:43Goodnight, Grandpa.
48:44Goodnight, Jason.
48:46You're a good boy.
49:02You're a good boy.
49:32¶.
