00:00The SD80MAC was a powerful locomotive that measured 80 feet long and weighed 400,000
00:18pounds with 5,000 horsepower.
00:20It was the second locomotive to use EMD's V20 engine.
00:24Although it was designed to compete with GE's locomotives at the time, it was quickly overshadowed
00:29by the SD90MAC and AC6000CW, which both had 6,000 horsepower.
00:34The Chicago and Northwestern Railway ordered the SD80MAC, but the deal fell through due
00:38to a merger with Union Pacific.
00:40Canadian Pacific also considered buying the engine, but chose the SD90MAC instead.
00:44Conrail was the only buyer of the engine, but after Conrail split, the remaining SD80MACs
00:49were taken over by CSX and Norfolk Southern.
00:52Both these railroads prefer to run more standardized fleets, so the SD80MACs didn't get to enjoy
00:56a long history.
00:57However, they are finally remembered by Conrail fans as the Conrail Cadillac.
01:02Some of the model features include a 5-pole Cotter motor with dual brass flywheels, directional
01:06headlight and pre-printed number boards, Cotter magnetic knuckle coupler, and a DCT rating
01:10mechanism ready for a drop-in decoder.
