00:00Okay ladies, let's bake you both in a dresser and do a good clean fight.
00:04Protect yourselves at all times, obey my commands at all times.
00:07Touch gloves, good luck to both of you.
00:11Nicola Costello in the white.
00:13We are seconds out.
00:14Sarah Watt in the blue and black for the vacant Australian super flyweight title.
00:23Taylor Robertson along with her trainer and mentor Glenn Azar in the crowd watching on.
00:32We are scheduled for eight two minute rounds.
00:40One of the fights of the last four months is no doubt Nicola Costello, Jasmine Parr.
00:47Unbelievable scrap, always in a good one, no?
00:51Yeah, she definitely is.
00:53Trying to go for her second Australian title.
00:56Obviously she's picked up the flyweight title before, so this is for the super flyweight.
01:00So she's looking to be a two-time Australian champion, so that's a big feat in itself.
01:04And Sarah Watt on the other hand, she's going for her first Australian title.
01:08So big night for both girls.
01:12Both girls just swing and miss there in the centre of the ring so far, just trying to find their mark early.
01:22Good evasion there from Costello.
01:25In speaking to Najmeli, in the lead up they know Sarah has got to box.
01:32She must avoid getting into the fight because the fight is exactly what Nicola Costello wants to do.
01:39Yeah, her output's her game.
01:41She obviously throws a lot more punches than her opponents usually and that's where she just suffocates her opponents.
01:47But right now she's actually looking to box a little more.
01:50So she's boxing really well so far, Costello.
01:59In the right part of the ring there, Costello, but playing the countering role and doing it really well, Sarah Watt.
02:06We have got such contrasting styles in this match-up, on paper anyway.
02:13And the fights aren't fought on paper, so the contrasting styles should provide a really good mix as the head gets rocked back.
02:21Nicola Costello late in the opening round and Nicola's talking it up.
02:26I wonder, I just wonder how the three ringside judges had it made.
02:30Tom Watson and Phil Austin scored that.
02:34Yeah, once again, high energy first round.
02:37You always get that when you've got a Nicola Costello fight in front of you.
02:40Sarah Watt, she's tried to dictate that centre ring and that's where she wants to be, obviously.
02:45Because Costello, always the stronger fighter, pushing back her opponents.
02:49So if she can hold that centre ring, she's doing well and keeping to her game plan, obviously.
02:54But Costello did box at times there.
02:57So that was a surprising result.
03:01That was a surprising new trait to her little tool kit.
03:05And when she stuck behind her jab, she did really well.
03:15We are ready for round number two.
03:17Andy Raymond alongside Nathan Piccardo.
03:19We are ringside at Southport Sharks.
03:24Straight right hand from Sarah Watt to start.
03:31Sarah Watt.
03:38Watt pushing forward.
03:42You can see just firing down the barrel is Sarah Watt.
03:48She's catching gloves most of the time, but sometimes they're popping through as well.
03:55You can see a very high guard there from Costello.
03:58But she's going to throw something after it.
04:00Just catch, catch, catch.
04:01She's going to throw something straight after.
04:06Control in the middle of the ring is what they're trying to achieve from the red corner,
04:10from the Sarah Watt corner.
04:17Costello with that left hand.
04:19Nice and high, but out in front.
04:21Really good picking there from Sarah Watt in the blue.
04:25Against the ropes they go.
04:28And this is Costello's game.
04:29You can see in the corner now, that's where she wants to be.
04:31She wants to be thrown on branches while her opponent's back is to the ropes.
04:48Yeah, and there was a receipt there from Costello.
04:50Another good shot coming back.
05:00There's a good right hand there from Watt.
05:02Once again, touching Costello.
05:03She comes in.
05:04She's just going to come off that centre line.
05:11Last couple of seconds of the round.
05:13Oh, good shot from Nicolo Costello.
05:15Yeah, really good shot there from Costello.
05:17And that was a really good ending to this round,
05:21because it looked like Sarah Watt was probably stealing that round,
05:24but that big right hand maybe just changed the game.
05:28So how do you score it at home?
05:30What are you looking at in terms of dominance, output, power,
05:36ring generalship, better shots, more shots, harder shots?
05:41Because that last punch from Nicolo Costello,
05:44that could be a round changer, depending on how you score.
05:48Yeah, there was really good work from Sarah Watt,
05:51keeping her opponent at bay,
05:53fighting the majority of the round once again in the centre of the ring.
05:56But when she gets caught in the corners and on the ropes,
05:59that's when Nicolo is dangerous.
06:01And you can see in the last 10 seconds,
06:04she connected and she connected hard.
06:16The Costello right hand was a beauty, Nathan,
06:18but it did not buckle a bit Sarah Watt.
06:24Testament to her fitness, I guess.
06:26You can see she's very well conditioned.
06:28Both girls very well conditioned.
06:31Both obviously put the work into the gym.
06:34And plenty of movement and plenty of shots so far.
06:38I mean, they're in this for the long haul.
06:41Good right hand there from Costello at the top,
06:43starting to the body, finishing to the head.
06:46Started a little bit slower than we are used to as Nicolo Costello,
06:51really getting into her work now.
06:57Reach looks about the same for both girls.
07:01Keep getting jolted back a couple of times in that exchange from Sarah Watt.
07:05Yeah, Costello's in that mid-range though that's very dangerous
07:08because if you're not throwing, you're probably getting caught.
07:11So she's got to watch out.
07:13She can't stay in that mid-range if she's not slipping
07:15and she's not throwing punches
07:16because she's just going to get caught down the barrel.
07:19Look, exactly like that.
07:36Right hand just missing the mark there from Costello
07:38and there's another one there.
07:40And a better shot to the body as well.
07:42And this is where she does her best work.
07:44When the back's against the ropes, that's when Nicolo gets going.
07:47You can see the punches are pouring on
07:49and that was a really good move once again from Sarah Watt
07:52to get back to centre ring.
07:53There was a punch in the middle of that combination, a beauty,
07:56and it was from Sarah Watt.
07:58Yeah.
07:59She's eyes open, very aware of what's happening.
08:04Some marking underneath the left eye of Nicolo Costello already.
08:10Yeah, oh, two good shots there from Sarah Watt.
08:13Wow, we're only in round three
08:15and this is already starting to heat up and heat up fast
08:18for this Australian super flyweight title.
08:20What a fight.
08:26As we can see, some replays of the previous round,
08:29which was the third round.
08:30There's another really good performance from Sarah Watt
08:33trying to dictate that centre ring.
08:35But boy, when she wasn't in centre ring,
08:38the girl in white, Nicolo Costello,
08:40she was pouring on the pressure and scoring with her own blows.
08:43It got scrappy at times, but both girls fighting pretty well,
08:48fighting out of the pocket
08:51and both throwing plenty and plenty of leather.
09:03They're hitting her, but you're swinging off, right?
09:06We need to be careful.
09:08Right?
09:09We need a big round.
09:14Johnny Baskerville in the corner there with Nicolo Costello
09:16just saying, we need a big round.
09:22Round number four.
09:23It is scheduled for eight.
09:25Just the two minute rounds with the women.
09:31Nicolo's doing all the hard work here.
09:32She's getting into the right position to throw the punch,
09:34but sometimes not throwing it.
09:36She's breaking the distance.
09:37She's got a high guard, but then just doesn't pull the trigger
09:40and that's probably costing her
09:42a little bit at the start of this fight.
09:46As you can see, she's in that mid-range.
09:48She can throw a punch right there,
09:49but sometimes she just takes a few
09:51and just lets Sarah escape maybe a little bit too easily.
09:56Both girls are putting the work.
09:58Superb conditioning.
10:01Absolutely first class from these two.
10:08The suggestion to Sarah, you be first
10:11and when you do get in, stay.
10:15Don't jab and move.
10:18Jab, get in, use your right hand,
10:22follow it up with body shots.
10:24That's the theory.
10:25Sounds so easy.
10:30And lead her away from the ropes
10:32and she does just that.
10:34She's a good listener, Sarah White.
10:36I don't know how they hear instructions,
10:38any of these athletes.
10:39I don't know how they hear and absorb
10:42any instructions in the middle of all this,
10:44but they do.
10:47And you're right, they know the experience as well.
10:49Obviously, Sarah White only had nine fights to date
10:52and she's hearing things in the corner
10:54and she's adjusting on the fly,
10:56so that's very good.
10:58She just scores with a big right hand once again
11:00and she moves out of harm's way.
11:02Very polished round, this one for Sarah White.
11:07I don't want to be scoring this, Nate.
11:09I'm going to tell you that right now.
11:11Yeah, good right hand.
11:12I do not want to be scoring this.
11:14Once again, it's going to depend on what you
11:16or what the three judges are looking at.
11:19Tell you what, she's doing it time after time.
11:23Costello's coming home the stronger
11:25to close out the round
11:27and that's probably the most recent thing
11:29in the judges' heads, so you're right.
11:31These judges' scorecards might be wired apart
11:34just depending on the way you're looking at it.
11:37As we see some replays of that fourth round.
11:40Once again, a high-energy round.
11:44Both girls throwing plenty of leather.
11:46That right hand just missing from what?
11:51Great fight.
11:55If you just go fucking thump thump thump,
11:57you're going to hit her every day.
11:58You're widening up, she's holding, she's scrapping.
12:01Listen, I want those one-twos over each other,
12:04down her chest.
12:06Then I want you to follow it up on the block
12:08and I want you to get inside and work.
12:09We've got to work.
12:12You mentioned earlier, Nathan,
12:14that output is the key to Nicola Costello
12:17and John Bastable trying a little bit
12:19of positive reinforcement there.
12:21Work, work, work.
12:22We want your output to be what we know it can be.
12:26Well, that's her game.
12:27She breaks down her opponents most of the time
12:29and just overawes them.
12:31She just throws punches and bunches
12:33and doesn't stop until they basically give in.
12:35That's how she wins.
12:37She's been a little bit conservative here.
12:39Like I said, in that mid-range,
12:40she's not throwing as much as she usually does.
12:43That's for sure.
12:46Good right hand from Costello.
12:48She needs to try to back that up now with another shot.
12:55Nice right hand again.
12:56She's finding a home for that right hand.
13:00Quite regularly is Sarah Watt.
13:03Yeah, she's doing really well.
13:05In terms of experience, nothing separates these two girls.
13:09Fight number nine for Nicola.
13:12Fight number ten for Sarah.
13:19Saw a little left hand from Nicola Costello,
13:22but the response is a good one.
13:24Yeah, she's mixing up well
13:26between straight shots for the body
13:28and straight shots for the head of Sarah Watt
13:30and she's creating openings.
13:36Start again.
13:37We're hearing that regularly.
13:39And those screams are coming from the red corner.
13:41They're coming from Najmeli.
13:47Slip there as ruled by our referee,
13:50the former state champion Paul Tatley.
13:5520 seconds remaining.
13:57That was a good right hand once again from Watt,
13:59just catching her straight down the middle
14:01and there's another one-two combination.
14:03She's just got to get off that centre line
14:05or use her offence as a defence
14:08like she usually does Costello and start throwing.
14:11That's a good right hand from Costello.
14:16Five rounds down, three remaining.
14:18Time for a minute's rest.
14:24We're going to go round and round for the Hawks
14:26and then we're going to hit it for the Australians.
14:33You can see some replays of that fifth round.
14:36Another high, high energy round.
14:38Sarah Watt, wow.
14:41Fighting out of her skin tonight.
14:43I know, but it is.
14:45It's hard for the judges to score.
14:49For fuck's sake, listen to me.
14:51Let those one-twos go down the middle
14:53and you're hitting her every time with a one-two
14:55and then you go back and scrap it.
14:56One-two.
14:57Use the right hook after the jab.
14:59Tap in with the jab and let the right hand go on the end of it.
15:02That simple, straight shit.
15:04Simple, straight shit.
15:06You're hitting her every time.
15:08Let's go.
15:14Do you sense a little bit more desperation
15:16in the blue corner, Nate?
15:18Yeah, certainly.
15:19I mean, we're already in round six.
15:20There's only eight round us,
15:22so I think, yeah, she's getting caught by shots
15:25that she doesn't usually get caught with
15:27just from maybe just, I don't know,
15:30just sitting in the pocket too long.
15:32And usually when she's throwing,
15:34she's not throwing today.
15:36So, I don't know.
15:37It's a bit of a confusing performance so far,
15:39but I mean, yeah, she can turn it around.
15:42There's still plenty of time
15:43and that was a good right hand from Costello there.
15:45That's what she needs to do.
15:46She has to back it up right now.
15:48Good to see our mate,
15:49the busiest man in Australian boxing,
15:51Nicky Noonan here.
15:53Travels more kilometres,
15:55watches more boxing
15:56and also plays more golf than anyone I know.
15:59He's here ringside once again.
16:02And this is better work from Costello.
16:04You can see she wants it rough again.
16:06This is her.
16:07She's the junkyard dog.
16:08She wants it messy.
16:09She wants it in close
16:10and she wants plenty of punches to be thrown.
16:13But once again, oh, big right hand.
16:18Costello, best punch of the fight so far.
16:21It was a cracking right hand,
16:23but Watt took it well as well.
16:26An overhand right from Costello.
16:28That is a fight changer.
16:31But just when you think Nicola is gaining an advantage
16:34or pulling the momentum to the other side of the ring,
16:39Sarah's output hasn't changed.
16:41Yeah, I mean, just full on.
16:43Wow, her fitness.
16:44Yeah, she's done the work in the gym.
16:46That's for sure because both girls,
16:48I mean, their output's pretty good,
16:50especially in this round.
16:52But it's been all the way through for Sarah Watt,
16:55that's for sure.
16:56Oh, right hand again from Sarah Watt.
17:00That's it.
17:01She's starting to move her head a little bit more.
17:02It's Costello making it a little bit harder to target,
17:04not just catch her straight down the middle,
17:06which is what Sarah Watt's been doing all night.
17:09Under 10 seconds remaining in the sixth round.
17:13So just four minutes after this,
17:15is this slipping away from Nicola Costello
17:19as we go back to the corners.
17:27Another busy, busy round was round six.
17:29You can see that variation between the body and the head
17:32for Sarah Watt's paying dividends.
17:34Jabbing low, bringing the guard down of Costello
17:37and then finishing with a right hand over the top.
17:40Both scoring.
17:42Very, very good game plan so far from Sarah Watt.
17:45She's executing it very well.
17:55It's your fight, honey.
17:57Don't be silly.
17:59Don't be silly.
18:00We've got this in control.
18:01Mouth guard, please.
18:06No, it's merely in the corner there with Shane.
18:08Hasn't had a lot of time with Sarah.
18:10He's based in Wollongong.
18:12She's been based in Canberra.
18:13They've made the trip up here together.
18:17A little partnership if we continue like this.
18:26Watch your head, girls.
18:27Watch your head.
18:28Round number seven, the penultimate round.
18:31Nicola Costello in the white
18:33looking for her second Australian champion.
18:35Sarah Watt in the blue looking for her first.
18:41Good shot.
18:43Nicola Costello right on the chin,
18:46but the toughness of Sarah Watt,
18:49she's worn three or four really good right hands to Nicola Costello
18:53that we have seen buckle other opponents in the past two years.
18:57Watt has walked through them.
18:59I agree.
19:00You'd say that Costello has probably scored the two best shots of the fight,
19:04but it's just the continual shots from Sarah Watt that's paying dividends.
19:11Another good shot.
19:15Watt scoring with two right hands herself.
19:19In fighting that's going to, you would think in theory anyway,
19:24favour Nicola Costello,
19:26but that's what we thought coming into this.
19:29It hasn't panned out like that.
19:31No, just massive engine in Sarah Watt.
19:33She's done the work, like I said,
19:35because she's matching her motor, that's for sure.
19:41She's throwing a jab.
19:42You probably don't want to throw a single though,
19:44because that can be counted very easily.
19:46So Sarah Watt just a lazy jab there.
19:49She got away with it, but in the future she may not.
19:56That's better.
19:57Combinations and another jab to finish off.
20:00Yeah, that is certainly better.
20:02Certainly more like the Costello that we've seen.
20:10Out of the United fight team.
20:13You have 60 seconds to assess or reassess,
20:16however you want to term it.
20:19Nicola's still got a level of confidence there.
20:21I'm not sure that's shared by Johnny Baskerville as we go into the corner.
20:28Yeah, frustrating fight for the Costello fans,
20:30because I think we know she can do a hell of a lot more,
20:33but she's doing it in little patches throughout the round.
20:37She's having an explosive 30 seconds,
20:39but she's not backing it up throughout the whole two minutes of each round,
20:42and that's probably why Sarah Watt's stealing the rounds.
20:46That's unofficially of course,
20:47but that's just what we're seeing from our end.
21:05Two minutes remain, get ready.
21:06It's going to be quite the two.
21:09The girls.
21:11Touch gloves.
21:14We are into it.
21:16Our final round for the Australian super flyweight title,
21:21Nicola Costello, Sarah Watt.
21:26One looking for a second national belt,
21:28the other looking for her first.
21:30There's a better start for Costello.
21:32Two right hands, three right hands now,
21:34that have connected all in this last round.
21:38In the first 30 seconds,
21:39so it's a much better start,
21:40and you can see when she throws punches,
21:43she looks her best.
21:44She's thrown so many punches in this first 30 seconds,
21:47and she's starting to look her old self,
21:49is Costello.
21:51Oh, right hand again from Costello,
21:53right hand just missing over the top.
21:55Wow, oh, she's starting to open up.
21:58The desperation is being thrown,
22:01and you're starting to pay dividends for Costello.
22:03Where was this a couple of rounds ago?
22:05Now, but Watt's fighting a very smart fight.
22:08They've got a level of confidence there in front of the judges' scorecards.
22:11They don't need to do anything drastic when it gets like that.
22:16Sarah Watt can afford to, I think, hold on.
22:19Certainly.
22:20And just slow it all down.
22:21She wears another right hand there.
22:23She's starting to get marked up in the left eye,
22:26above and below.
22:27I was just about to say that, Andy.
22:29Her face was clean before the start of this round,
22:32and all of a sudden she's got markings everywhere,
22:34because Costello's coming forward and coming forward with punches.
22:40She's got bruising underneath the right eye as well.
22:42She's got a bruised smack bang in the middle of her forehead.
22:45Great right hand, doubling up there from Sarah Watt.
22:48That was really nice stuff.
22:49Yeah, that was good work off the back foot from Sarah Watt.
22:53And there's another right hand.
22:54She's closing out this round a lot better than what she started,
22:57that's for sure.
22:58Nerves in the bellies of both women prior to this fight.
23:03Respect the national title and what it means on this Remembrance Day,
23:082023.
23:09Sarah Watt and Nicola Costello have had a beauty
23:12for the Australian Superflyweight title.
23:19Another great fight for the Australian Superflyweight title,
23:23both girls doing the belt proud.
23:27And Sarah Watt, for a first time, fighting for Australian title.
23:32She's done herself ultra proud,
23:34because that was a really good performance all the way through
23:37those eight rounds.
23:38As you can see, some highlights of that eighth and final round,
23:42and it was a much better round for Nicola Costello in my eyes.
23:45She started them much stronger.
23:47For, I'd say, a minute and a half of that two minutes,
23:50she owned it.
23:52Sarah Watt did come back the last 30 seconds,
