Israel “targeted strike” on Beirut kills top Hezbollah leader
Israel said it had carried out a “targeted strike” on a southern suburb of Beirut that is a Hezbollah stronghold.
Thick smoke could be seen rising over the Lebanese capital in the aftermath of the attack, which killed Ibrahim Aqil, one of the group’s top military leaders, as well as ten senior Hezbollah commanders.The Lebanese Health Ministry says the number of people killed in the blast has risen to 12, and the number of injured now stands at 66. Nine of the wounded are in critical condition.
The strikes came minutes after reports that the Iranian-backed group had launched up to 150 missiles on northern Israel. The latest exchange of fire came the day after Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah’s leader, vowed revenge on Israel after exploding communication devices killed more than 37 people and injured thousands.
