00:00Sally Boyden was this beautiful, pretty little package of great intelligence and great talent
00:09and incredible stamina.
00:26When I was 11 and I was still in the show I was approached to do an album
00:29called The Littlest Australian, which John knew about, the producers knew about
00:34and it became a very, very big success.
00:44However, I committed the cardinal sin of going on Channel 9 to do the Don Lane show
00:49and from that moment on I was a complete outcast.
00:55I was 11 years old and one of the cameramen and one of the producers had a little dig at me
01:00and I did the show and I got in the car and I just went,
01:04can you please ring tomorrow and say that I'm not coming back because it's not fun anymore
01:07and I don't want to do this anymore.
01:09Sally left Young Talent Time but was quickly signed for her first movie role.
01:13She released a second album, received gold records and then left Australia for Hollywood.
01:19Oh lassie, lassie, how did you get away?
01:22Over the next few years she appeared in a number of movies and television series
01:27and continued to travel between Australia and America.
01:30But during this period Sally also began a battle with heroin and anorexia,
01:36which began with the 1982 film Flashdance.
01:40The actual trigger for anorexia was I was down to the last three for Flashdance
01:44and the director phoned my agent and said if I lost a stone I would have the part.
01:48So that very night I began a diet and I had to be the best dieter in the world.
02:00But what happened was I just didn't know where to stop
02:02and I lost the weight and didn't get the part but I just kept going.
02:08To add to that it's interesting that Debbie and I both had problems with heroin
02:12and when I went public about what had happened to me
02:18it happened quite naturally the way the story came about.
02:22I think it's been the right thing to do and I'm sure Debbie's alright too.
02:28I love you Debbie.
02:30I had the most incredible opportunities because of it
02:34and I got to travel and I was exposed to music and I'm a songwriter and a singer now
02:39and I have my band Candy Bombers and I would never have done that in that respect.
