00:00Master magicians from around the world are taking science and fusing it with magic to break everything you thought you knew about the world around you.
00:15They'll perform street magic, hidden camera tricks, and epic illusions.
00:21It'll all look like magic, but it's really science.
00:26This time, James demonstrates destructive mind power.
00:32Billy and Ben create scientific secret camera mayhem.
00:37Get off it!
00:39And Wayne does his first bungee jump, after cutting the rope.
00:55Magic is an ancient art. Finding new ways to mystify the audience can be a bit of a challenge.
01:07We've taken some of the coolest principles that science has to offer and put on our own spin.
01:13And turned that into some incredible magic.
01:17Sounds amazing? It is. Take a look at this.
01:26First up, James Galea is at a freight depot in London to try out a powerful new trick.
01:38Alright, I've been working on something new. Watch this.
01:45I wonder, can we do it 200 times bigger?
01:56Alright, this tanker is just under 8,000 gallons, and if what I've got in mind for tonight works, it's gonna be pretty awesome.
02:05James has apparently mastered the technique of crushing 40-gallon oil drums with the power of his mind.
02:13Now he's going to supersize the trick with the help of six volunteers.
02:17Together, can they concentrate their brain power and collectively crush this monster truck?
02:24Just by thinking about it?
02:26This is an 8,000 gallon fuel tanker. It weighs 7 tons.
02:31Tonight, what we're going to do together is something pretty special.
02:36Does anyone here know what telekinesis is?
02:39What would you say telekinesis is?
02:41Moving things by the power of your mind?
02:43That's exactly what it is. That's the exact definition.
02:45What we're going to try to do with the power of telekinesis is put a small bend in the center of the fuel tanker.
02:55I was thinking, okay, I'll give it a go and see what happens.
03:00Bear with me.
03:08Can you all see that X? Awesome.
03:10Now comes the important part.
03:13My job as a magician is to make things move with my mind. That's what I do.
03:18But wouldn't it be amazing here tonight if I was able to pass that power onto the six of you?
03:24In just a second, that's exactly what we're going to do.
03:28Kim, I'm going to ask you to focus only on the X, and I want you to think just one thing.
03:34All I want you to think is bend, bend, bend.
03:37Bend, bend, bend.
03:40I know it may seem a little bit far-fetched, but just believe and trust me.
03:44Go, Kim.
03:51You need to focus a little more, mate.
03:56Stop.
03:59I think we might be doing this all wrong.
04:01Simon, go.
04:08Give it a little more for me, Simon.
04:16All right, all right, just stop for a second. All look at me just for a second.
04:20We're going to try this one more time.
04:22I know it seems weird and I know it seems odd, but all I want you to do is just focus on the X.
04:26With all six of you together, I just want you to think one, two, three, bend, all at once.
04:30Are you ready? One, two, three.
04:38Just keep focusing for me.
04:51Oh, wow.
05:07Wow.
05:17Somehow, it starts crushing.
05:20And the next thing you know, it's bent and buckled like it's no good for anything.
05:24And then when it really went...
05:27I nearly stepped back. I was so shocked.
05:30I couldn't believe that it had all gone like that.
05:32It's pretty awesome.
05:33It wasn't mind power crushing the tanker and the barrels.
05:37It was air pressure.
05:39At sea level, air pressure is over one kilogram of force per square centimeter,
05:44constantly pressing down over the metal surface of the tanker.
05:47But the reason the tanker doesn't collapse under this force
05:51is that there is an equal air pressure inside, pushing back.
05:55The trick was that James' tanker was secretly connected to another tanker,
05:59which had most of the air pumped out to create a vacuum inside.
06:03This vacuum tanker is designed to be strong enough to resist outside air pressure.
06:08When the valve was open on the pipe connecting the two,
06:11air rushed out of James' tanker to fill the vacuum tanker
06:15and so decrease the pressure inside James'.
06:18The air pressure outside could then press down with nothing pushing back
06:22and crush James' tanker like a tin can.
06:25What the eyes see and the ears hear, the mind believes.
06:28And it's my job as a magician to make these things all happen in front of you.
06:30And when it does, it's pretty incredible.
06:37Phone books. I didn't know people still use them.
06:40I know, right? I've been working on a neat trick with a couple of books,
06:43but if they rip as easily as those do, I could be in trouble.
06:51On the other side of London, Ben Hanlon has come to witness
06:55fellow magician Wayne Houchen's first ever bungee jump.
06:58He's going to be leaping from a crane 160 feet in the air.
07:03But as Ben's about to find out, it'll be a dive with a difference.
07:08How are you? Good. What's the plan then?
07:11Tonight I'm doing a bungee jump. Who hasn't?
07:14Not like this. This is the high-tension sling that connects the bungee cord to the crane.
07:18Now before each jump, they usually do an inspection.
07:21If there are any tears on this, they won't do it.
07:23But this is the sling I'm going to use tonight. Hang on to that for me.
07:26Nice and tight.
07:32Well, they're not going to let you use it now, are they?
07:35We'll see. So here's the challenge.
07:37I'm wondering if there's some way that I can fix these two ends together
07:40so that I can safely do the jump.
07:42Like glue? No, it won't work.
07:44Sticky tape? I've tried it. It won't work.
07:46Staples? Staples? No, with these books.
07:49Obviously. Two questions. Are we going to test this theory?
07:53Yes. That's why you're here. You are?
07:54Yeah. I want you to find something that represents me, something we can drop.
07:57Okay. Second question. Who's next of kin?
08:00Funny.
08:08Wayne's plan is daring.
08:10He's going to interweave the pages of the two books.
08:13He'll then attach a rope to the spine of each book.
08:16One end will be fixed to the crane and the other to the bungee jumper.
08:19He hopes that the friction alone between the pages is strong enough to hold.
08:27I think I got the books together. It's pretty good.
08:30And I made myself a little wane.
08:32It's like looking into a freaky mirror. Let's do this.
08:34All right. Good luck.
08:37He's got no chance.
08:39Let's do it.
08:44Wow. What a view, huh?
08:45Between me and you, let's hope it works, but it's not going to.
08:49You ready, little Wayne?
08:51It's your big moment.
08:53Three, two, one.
09:03Oh!
09:05Jeez.
09:07Little Wayne!
09:10It's pumpkin soup!
09:11It's pumpkin soup!
09:14The books didn't work.
09:17Seriously, who is your next of kin?
09:24It's time to hit the streets of London.
09:27Magicians Billy Kidd and Ben Hanlon are going undercover at this restaurant.
09:32Billy is posing as a waitress and Ben as a customer.
09:35They've set up secret cameras and are out to trick these two groups of café-goers
09:40into thinking that Billy has ruined a customer's jacket.
09:45Excuse me, ladies. Do you mind looking after my stuff for a sec?
09:48Yes, okay. Yeah.
09:50Excuse me. Do you mind keeping an eye on that for a sec? Is that cool?
09:53No problem, man.
09:55Cheers, guys.
09:57Have you guys ever been here before at all?
09:59No.
10:00This is your first time?
10:02Well, if you just take a look at the menu...
10:03Oh, watch out, watch out!
10:05Oh!
10:07We've just got to look after that.
10:10Do you know whose jacket this was?
10:12The guy's just been there. He's just been looking out for it.
10:14Don't say anything. I'll just go get something to clean that up.
10:23Have you guys ever been here before at all?
10:25Sorry?
10:26Have you ever been here before at all?
10:31Oh my goodness.
10:34Uh...
10:37Do you know whose jacket this was?
10:39Yeah, he just walked off and said,
10:41Oh, can you look after my stuff?
10:43Don't say anything. I'll be right back.
10:46I didn't even see her do that.
10:48I think you're going to have to take that to the dry cleaners.
10:51Um, well, see if I can get most of it out.
10:53Do you know what he looked like?
10:55Yeah, he's short, thumb or a manual token.
10:59Maybe I can get this out just before he comes.
11:03I do apologise for that.
11:05I'll get your orders in a moment.
11:07I was watching her trying to get it off
11:09and I thought, that's not going to come out.
11:11She just carried on and I thought, this guy's going to go crazy.
11:13Oh, he's there.
11:15Is he coming up?
11:17Whoa, whoa, whoa. What's going on?
11:21I'm really sorry.
11:23This lady, she accidentally spilled her drink on your jacket.
11:25On my jacket, yeah.
11:28It was an accident though, right?
11:30Yeah, but it looks ruined now.
11:31Sorry, sorry. Hold on. What happened?
11:33She didn't do anything.
11:35Well, she moved her chair back and I had the glass and she...
11:37You just seem to be getting it wet rather than...
11:39Yeah, well, I'm trying to get the stain out.
11:41Yeah, get off it, please. Get off it.
11:43I think it was your chair that he moved it.
11:45So he kicked it?
11:47It was an accident.
11:51I'm really sorry.
11:53I asked you to look after it and look at it.
11:55Yeah, but that's not our responsibility.
11:57Yeah, but it's like completely ruined now, isn't it?
11:59Because it's got...
12:01Jeez.
12:03Fire, fire, fire, fire.
12:06Whoa, whoa, whoa.
12:08Whoa, whoa, whoa.
12:10Sorry, mate. Sorry.
12:12Whoa, that's fire. That is fire. That is fire.
12:22Can you get off? Can you get off it?
12:24Are you warm enough now, Jackie?
12:26Oh.
12:30It's actually gone.
12:32How do you know?
12:34Not only has the stain vanished, but the coat isn't even scorched.
12:38It seems to have pretty much come off.
12:40It's a bit down, but it's come off now.
12:42It's all right.
12:44There's no stain on it now. Look.
12:46Sorry. Thank you for that. That was weird.
12:50Don't order the wine.
12:52I can't explain it.
12:54I just can't explain what happened at all.
12:56The jacket had been stained with red wine and then burnt,
12:59so for it to then appear fine and normal was quite a shock.
13:04It's magic.
13:06So how did the magicians restore the ruined coat?
13:09It wasn't really red wine that Billy dropped onto Ben's jacket.
13:14It was an alkaline liquid containing a chemical indicator called phenolphthalein,
13:19which goes pink when in the presence of an alkali.
13:23When Billy pretended to try and clean the stain,
13:26she actually poured a mixture of water and alcohol onto the jacket.
13:31As the alcohol burnt, the water cooled the cloth and stopped it from getting scorched.
13:38The fire extinguisher provided an intense blast of carbon dioxide,
13:42which mixed with the water to create carbonic acid.
13:45The carbonic acid neutralised the alkali in the fake wine,
13:49causing the chemical indicator to go colourless and the stain to disappear.
13:56We were set up.
13:58You learn something every day, don't you?
14:01Absolutely crazy. I don't see how it's going to work.
14:04After the break, will a terrified Wayne actually be able to go through with this insane bungee jump?
14:11Tonight, Wayne will bungee from a platform 160 feet above the ground.
14:20It's the equivalent of jumping from the top of a skyscraper.
14:24But it's not as easy as it looks.
14:27It's not as easy as it looks.
14:29It's not as easy as it looks.
14:31It's not as easy as it looks.
14:33It's not as easy as it looks.
14:35It's not as easy as it looks.
14:37It's the equivalent of jumping from the top of a 16-storey building.
14:44But what's more is that Wayne will be jumping with a bungee cord that's been cut.
14:50It's a very risky stunt, which has never been done before.
14:54And he's relying on just the friction between the pages of two books to save his life.
15:01I've done some crazy things, but this is by far the craziest.
15:04This is by far the craziest.
15:06To be honest, I'm terrified.
15:09Tonight, I'm going to be doing my very first bungee jump.
15:13Thank you. Thank you.
15:15I'm going to fall 160 feet from the top of the crane.
15:19And this is part of the rope that will attach my bungee cord to the crane.
15:26Now, what do you notice about this?
15:29I'm very perceptive of you, sir.
15:31This has been cut into two pieces.
15:32My challenge was to combine these so that I could do a safe jump.
15:38Without tying them together using any glue, I'm going to try to fix this using books.
15:47We have a couple of books here.
15:49Attached to the spine of each book is a metal clamp.
15:53We can attach it to the end of my bungee cord.
15:55The other book we can attach to the end of the rope that hooks onto the crane.
15:59And if I just push those books together so that the pages touch,
16:04I'm hoping that that will be enough to support my weight when I jump.
16:11And of course, if those books come apart, tonight is going to be a lot messier.
16:15Take a look. These are quite heavy.
16:17Will you take a look at this book here?
16:19And I'll grab the other one.
16:21Go ahead and open up the pages.
16:23You can see this is a normal book.
16:25There's nothing inside.
16:29And now we're ready to push the pages together.
16:33And I'll do the first few pages and then you guys can take over.
16:36The technique is basically it's just one page and then the other page.
16:40Nothing hidden in these pages.
16:42One page and then the other page.
16:45As you can see, this is going to take a little while.
16:49We're not stupid enough to do this without testing it.
16:52And we've got some video. Check it out.
16:59So, you can see our test didn't work out so well.
17:02It should have worked, but we were using much smaller books,
17:05so that's when we went to the larger books.
17:08And hopefully that's going to work.
17:10It sounds absolutely crazy to be using books when he's doing a bungee jump.
17:15There is no trick. We are actually doing this.
17:18I can't see how that book's going to hold together.
17:20I'd never try this.
17:22I've never done this before.
17:23There is no trick. We are actually doing this.
17:25I can't see how that book's going to hold together.
17:27I've never tried this. Never in my life.
17:30This is officially done and ready to go.
17:37At this point, I'd like to introduce a very good friend and a very talented magician, Mr. Ben Hanlon.
17:47Wish me luck.
17:49Thank you. Thank you.
17:53In a moment, Wayne's going to make his ascent up to 160 feet.
17:58He's then going to do a bungee jump attached to a bungee cord
18:02and two books which are only held together with their pages.
18:07If it goes wrong, he's going to try and aim for that mat.
18:10That's not going to do him much good because at 160 foot fall,
18:13he's going to be landing head first. He's not going to be walking home after it.
18:16Okay.
18:19How are you feeling, Wayne?
18:21Nervous.
18:23That's all right.
18:31Let's do it.
18:37There we go. Those are the books.
18:40There's a risk the books could fall apart in a breeze before Wayne's jump,
18:45so they've been wrapped with a small amount of sticky tape to stop the pages from flapping.
18:54That's it.
19:01Wayne, how are you feeling?
19:03Every fiber in my body is telling me that I should not be doing this with books.
19:10Are you sure you want to do this, mate?
19:20Yes, I'm sure.
19:24All right.
19:2710, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
19:53All right.
20:08Relax, relax. I'm going to let you down.
20:13Well done, buddy.
20:15I literally just fell 160 feet two minutes ago, and I'm still here, so it works.
20:23There was no trick. I just really did that.
20:29Those he had between him and heaven was two books layered page by page put together.
20:36Now, this is crazy. Look at this. Pull on it.
20:39It was freaky. It defied logic. I didn't think something like that could actually happen.
20:44It took two of them 10 minutes to get it apart.
20:47No wonder I didn't die.
20:49Wayne owes his life to the power of friction.
20:53The books were held together only by frictional force.
20:57Each page was exerting friction against the page from the other book.
21:01Because there were so many pages in each of Wayne's books,
21:05the friction between them created a bond with a breaking point of over 8,000 pounds.
21:11That's almost 47 times Wayne's body weight.
21:16That was by far the most terrifying thing I've ever done.
21:22Not quite sure how he did it on such a massive scale.
21:25To crush something that big is quite impressive.
21:30I was in shock. I just didn't know what to say.
21:33And I thought, this guy's going to go crazy.
21:36I was in shock. I just didn't know what to say.
21:39And I thought, this guy's going to go crazy.
21:44What just happened was unbelievable.
21:47I've never, ever, ever seen anything like this before.
21:50I thought it was really cool, but totally nuts.
