00:00Thank you so much for joining us, and now we will enter the Q&A segment.
00:04And to discuss an interesting topic this time,
00:06about the landscape of the water-powered electric motorcycle business,
00:10which has been connected through video conference,
00:12we have Mr. Raditya Wibowo,
00:14CEO and Founder of Maka Motors.
00:17How are you, Mr. Dito?
00:20I'm fine.
00:21I'm glad to be here.
00:23Okay, thank you for joining us.
00:24We've been bothering you since this morning.
00:26Okay, Mr. Dito, if we talk about the electric motorcycle market in Indonesia,
00:32do you think it's very interesting?
00:36It's interesting.
00:37In my opinion, the potential is very big because the market is big.
00:40So, the motorcycle market in Indonesia is the third largest in the world.
00:45Only China and India are bigger.
00:47The sales of new motorcycles are approximately 6 million units per year.
00:51But the electricity penetration is still very low.
00:53Approximately 1% last year.
00:56Approximately last year, there were about 60,000 new electric motorcycles.
01:00And the trend continues to increase.
01:02Actually, from 2022 to 2023,
01:05the demand for electric motorcycles has increased threefold.
01:08This year, the demand will increase even more.
01:11Because even now, the subsidy quota is running out,
01:13even though it has just been added.
01:15So, I think it's interesting.
01:17Because even now, the subsidy quota is running out,
01:19even though it has just been added.
01:21So, we see that the trend is very positive.
01:24And if you look at the driving factor,
01:26I think in the long run, this should continue.
01:28Because the main reason for consumers to move to electricity
01:32is to save operational costs compared to gasoline.
01:35So, if the price of gasoline increases,
01:38this will of course be a stronger driving factor.
01:41In addition, the price of electric motorcycle batteries
01:44will decrease every year in the near future.
01:47So, in the future, I think the potential will be even greater.
01:50Okay. A few moments ago,
01:52Mr. Taminah said that the battery
01:54and the fuel are dirty, he said.
01:57This then increases the urgency of the community
02:00to move to electric motorcycles.
02:03Okay.
02:04If we talk about the segmentation of electric motorcycles,
02:07there are those who are in the middle,
02:09those who are in the lower middle,
02:10or those who are in the upper middle.
02:12In your opinion, the segment is in the upper middle, right?
02:17Yes, so now there are various price points
02:20when it comes to electric motorcycles.
02:22There are those who are in the lower middle,
02:23those who are in the upper middle.
02:24If we pursue the most value for money for the consumer.
02:28Value for money means not the cheapest,
02:30not always the cheapest,
02:32but the one that gives the highest benefit.
02:35To meet the consumer's needs
02:37about the motorcycle itself.
02:40Because now the main problem is
02:43that motorcycles are a daily necessities
02:45for the Indonesian community.
02:47For many families,
02:48even this is their most expensive asset.
02:51So this is really a daily necessities,
02:53a daily necessities,
02:54and the quality must be high.
02:56The price must be high.
02:58And now if we think about it,
03:00the main problem is in the quality of the product.
03:03So that's our main focus in Makam Motor.
03:06Okay.
03:07Why is this market interesting in your opinion?
03:09Is the demand also the highest
03:12compared to other segments?
03:15In my opinion, this is interesting.
03:17If we look at the electric vehicle market,
03:20we have two wheels and also four wheels.
03:22As I mentioned earlier,
03:24electric motorcycles,
03:25if there are two wheels,
03:26maybe 1% of new sales last year.
03:28The number is still small.
03:29But if you look at the electric car data,
03:31for example, look at the data from Gaikindo,
03:34this year's sales from January to August.
03:36From the sales of new cars this year,
03:385.3% are electric.
03:40Even in August, it was 8.9%.
03:43So the number is much higher
03:45compared to motorcycles.
03:47Whereas 1-2 years ago,
03:49we all had an imagination,
03:51later it must be a motorcycle first,
03:52rather than a car.
03:53Because more people use motorcycles.
03:55But the reality is the opposite.
03:57The question is why?
03:59If you look at it,
04:01there are many classic problems
04:02that people like to mention
04:03when talking about electric vehicles.
04:05For example, the price of re-sales,
04:07the charging infrastructure,
04:09spare parts,
04:11all these problems are in the car segment.
04:14Even the car is more difficult to charge,
04:16because the battery is much bigger
04:18than a motorcycle,
04:19it can be tens of times more.
04:20But the penetration can be much higher
04:22than a motorcycle.
04:23Why?
04:24So we see that there is still a lot of potential
04:26for electric motorcycles,
04:27the penetration will increase again.
04:29At least it's the same as a car.
04:31But back to the problem I mentioned earlier,
04:34which is the quality of the product.
04:35So motorcyclists want to save
04:38on operational costs,
04:40but they don't want to compromise
04:41on performance,
04:42endurance,
04:43and product quality.
04:44And right now,
04:45in our opinion,
04:46there is no product
04:47that can meet those expectations.
04:50Compared to cars.
04:52Cars have a lot of options,
04:54but the most affordable price
04:56is a range of more than 200 kilometers.
04:59And the quality is considered okay.
05:01So consumers are starting to believe
05:03that in the world of motorcycles,
05:04this is our mission
05:06to solve that problem.
05:08Actually,
05:09what is the problem in the field?
05:11First, the range.
05:13This is often said,
05:15people are afraid of running out of battery on the road.
05:17Second, traction.
05:19So in Indonesia,
05:21we ride a motorcycle,
05:23we know that the road is busy,
05:26we are sometimes caught in traffic jams on the slopes.
05:29Moreover, we often bring passengers.
05:31If compared to China and India,
05:33the difference is in Indonesia.
05:34There, they don't bring passengers.
05:36In India, passengers ride a tricycle.
05:38Here, we use motorcycles for everything.
05:41So the motorcycle must be able to pull
05:43while carrying passengers.
05:44And heavy goods.
05:45Fridge,
05:47various things if people bring things on the motorcycle.
05:50Driving comfort is also important.
05:52So ergonomics,
05:53comfortable seating position.
05:54Because Indonesians ride motorcycles
05:56tend to be far away.
05:57And most importantly,
05:59it's easy to slip.
06:01Because,
06:03for example,
06:04the response of the motorcycle when accelerating
06:06is a bit jumpy or not smooth.
06:07We are less confident,
06:08slipping,
06:09getting in the gear.
06:10That's pretty important in our opinion.
06:12And lastly,
06:13endurance.
06:14So,
06:15how to make this motorcycle
06:17durable,
06:18easy to break.
06:20Because in the end,
06:21electric motorcycle,
06:22even though electric,
06:23it's still a motorcycle.
06:24So, the quality
06:26and durability of
06:28the mechanical part itself
06:30must be okay.
06:32It looks like the research and development
06:34from Makamotor itself
06:36has been done very comprehensively.
06:38As far as
06:40from the market demand itself
06:42or maybe the characteristics of the road and so on.
06:44Because this is specifically talking about
06:46the road in Indonesia.
06:48Because I'm also a motorcycle user.
06:49So it does need skills.
06:51And also a team that is really
06:53capable.
06:55As far as the concerns earlier,
06:57this can be accommodated
06:59in terms of product value
07:01from Makamotor.
07:03Yes.
07:05So, we really start
07:07from the needs of the user.
07:08I myself am also a motorcycle user.
07:09From high school.
07:11Me and my co-founder,
07:12we used to be neighbors.
07:13So every day,
07:14riding a motorcycle together to school.
07:16Then before I started Makamotor,
07:18I was in the transportation business.
07:21So I understand
07:23the needs of motorcycle users on the road.
07:25I also often talk to the driver.
07:27I used to try to be a driver.
07:29It's really hard, by the way.
07:31To be a driver.
07:32And I also, until now,
07:33almost every day ride a motorcycle.
07:34Except when it rains.
07:36So, indeed,
07:39if you look at our road conditions,
07:41there are several differences.
07:43One, the condition of the road
07:45that is very congested
07:47and needs to be cleaned.
07:49That's back to what I said earlier.
07:51The response of the motorcycle must be predictable.
07:53Especially if the throttle is pressed.
07:55To make a good response,
07:57it requires a lot of very detailed R&D.
07:59How we tune the dynamo response
08:01to pull the throttle.
08:03That's one.
08:04Second, our road,
08:05although sometimes it looks flat,
08:07it's actually not flat.
08:09It's a bit wavy.
08:11If, for example, a motorcycle test,
08:13we usually make a dry cycle.
08:15So we define,
08:17with a route like this,
08:18we have to determine
08:19what the surface of the road is.
08:21Usually, in Europe,
08:23the standard asphalt road is cobblestone.
08:25Cobblestone is like a conglomerate.
08:27In Indonesia,
08:29it can be said that
08:31almost all roads are cobblestone.
08:33Because the condition is
08:35there are uneven holes.
08:37So we have to design the motorcycle
08:39to be durable.
08:41With conditions like that.
08:43Especially if it is used by passengers
08:45and heavy loads.
08:47When will Maka Motors launch?
08:49We will discuss this topic later.
08:51Without further ado,
08:53we will be right back.
08:55I'm still talking with Mr. Raditya Wibowo,
08:57CEO and Founder of Maka Motors.
09:01Mr. Wibowo,
09:03if we look at various kinds of
09:05consumption from the community,
09:07of course, if we talk about the use
09:09of the electric motor itself,
09:11the consumption is related to
09:13the average of SPKLU.
09:15When will this become a concern?
09:17Or maybe,
09:19Maka Motors wants to have
09:21its own SPKLU?
09:25So about SPKLU,
09:27it becomes a concern
09:29that is quite important for consumers.
09:31Moreover, we are used to
09:33seeing gasoline vehicles,
09:35SPBU everywhere.
09:37So the instinct is also to see
09:39charging stations everywhere.
09:41Now the condition is not even
09:43the same all over Indonesia.
09:45Especially for motorcycles,
09:47there is no global standard for
09:49the shape of the plug and charging protocol.
09:51So maybe if you look at SPKLU on the street,
09:53it's mostly for cars.
09:55Actually, this is just the beginning for motorcycles.
09:57But if you look at the motorcycle,
09:59fortunately, the electric motor
10:01has a relatively small battery compared to a car.
10:03So it can be charged from
10:05a regular plug at home.
10:07So if we focus on
10:09making sure the charging distance is
10:11quite far, so that it can always reach
10:13home again. Imagine later
10:15when the motorcycle user comes home,
10:17the motorcycle just needs to be plugged in,
10:19it's already full in the morning when you want to use it.
10:21So this is a bit of a change
10:23in behavior. From what used to be
10:25filled with gasoline via SPPU, now it's
10:27more like charging a mobile phone.
10:29And if there is a need to charge
10:31faster, we also
10:33prepare a charging station that
10:35will initially be in our dealer.
10:37But later, of course,
10:39we want to continue to work
10:41with various parties to
10:43promote the development of the infrastructure.
10:45Okay, in terms of technology,
10:47it means that later there will be
10:49electric motorcycles from MakaMoto
10:51itself that will be presented.
10:53This technology is advanced,
10:55right, Mr. Dito?
10:57Moreover, if we talk about
10:59battery maintenance,
11:01what is promised later, Mr. Dito?
11:03Yes, yes, yes.
11:05So about technology,
11:07I can't share all the details yet,
11:09because there are some that we are still using.
11:11But what I can tell you
11:13is that more than 90%
11:15of our motorcycles are
11:17parts that are made,
11:19not bought. So it's designed
11:21and produced based on
11:23custom designs made by our team.
11:25Actually, the electric motorcycle technology,
11:27if you look at it, if you've ever played
11:29Tamiya before,
11:31actually the circuit is the same.
11:33There is a battery, there is a dynamo, but because
11:35the battery is a little bigger, we add a controller
11:37because it should be bigger.
11:39So actually, the simplest way
11:41is to find those three components and just
11:43connect them using a cable. But if you want to make
11:45the best electric motorcycle that meets
11:47the needs of the community, it's not as simple
11:49as just connecting a cable. There are a lot of engineering
11:51and testing work that we need to do
11:53to ensure that one
11:55energy use is efficient, so the battery
11:57does not run out quickly. Because, again,
11:59that is one of the main problems now,
12:01and also ensures that the motorcycle is
12:03safe and also durable.
12:05So,
12:07our R&D team
12:09has a lot of factors from the automotive
12:11world in Indonesia.
12:13There are also foreign diasporas,
12:15such as those who worked in Germany,
12:17those who worked in Japan, because
12:19they are interested in our vision
12:21to try to develop their own
12:23technology and products.
12:25Okay, before the launch,
12:27of course, now there is a stage of preparation
12:29for the launch. Does this mean
12:31production or how,
12:33Dito, before it is launched to the market?
12:35Actually,
12:37I'm really excited. I want to show
12:39and sell the motorcycle and I want everyone
12:41to try it. Because,
12:43we do have confidence
12:45what we want to launch
12:47in this market is very different
12:49from what is available now.
12:51And it really feels like
12:53it has been raised and test-driven.
12:55But,
12:57now the condition is
12:59our factory is ready.
13:01So, we have a production facility now.
13:03The launching target
13:05is not long.
13:07So, around the end of this year
13:09or early next year,
13:11we are working with all our suppliers
13:13so that the delivery of components
13:15is on time so that we can
13:17start mass production quickly.
13:19Because, automotive products
13:21have a fairly complex supply chain.
13:23Can we say that this is 100%
13:25made in Indonesia? Or are there
13:27other imported components?
13:29If we
13:31talk about the assembly itself,
13:33everything is in our production facility.
13:35And from the beginning,
13:37because we are also in Indonesia,
13:39many of our teams come from
13:41the local automotive industry.
13:43We have been cooperating with
13:45the local automotive component
13:47ecosystem supplier.
13:49Because they have years of experience
13:51making motorcycles with quality standards
13:53that are needed by the people
13:55in Indonesia.
13:57Okay.
13:59Okay. I hope the preparations
14:01for the launch will go smoothly
14:03and will be welcomed by the community.
14:05For MakaMoto itself, the time is very limited.
14:07Mas Dito, thank you for joining us.
14:09Good luck to you and your friends at MakaMoto.
14:11See you.
14:13Yes, thank you. See you.
14:15And before I finish, we will watch
14:17the movement of ISG at 9 o'clock
14:19more than 28 minutes in West Indonesia.
14:21As you can see on TV,
14:23ISG is moving steadily.
