00:00$21,000 and 99 demerit points.
00:06That's what one driver would have been hit with if it wasn't for the grace period that's
00:10been in effect for Adelaide's mobile phone detection cameras.
00:14That driver got busted using their phone behind the wheel a staggering 33 times, followed
00:20closely by other drivers who were caught 32 times and 31 times respectively.
00:26It's just ridiculous, stupid, irresponsible driving behaviour to be honest.
00:29We want to call it out for what it is.
00:31So far drivers have got off with a warning, but that grace period comes to an end at midnight
00:36tonight.
00:38Drivers caught flouting the mobile phone rules from tomorrow will be hit with a $556 fine
00:44and three demerit points.
00:46If you're over 18 you'll also have to pay a $102 victims of crime levy, while under
00:5118s will be charged a reduced levy of $20.
00:55SA Police say more than 68,000 warning notices have been issued during the three month grace
01:01period, about one driver every two minutes.
01:04Hamburger in one hand, phone in the other, it just beggars belief to be honest.
01:09South Australian drivers say they're not surprised.
01:12I think it's atrocious, it's dangerous.
01:16It's pretty horrific really, but I guess once again it's a learning thing for people to
01:21realise that there'll be consequences.
01:23Do you think that it's going to be enough to deter people?
01:26I think it'll certainly help, $650 is a fair hit into the wallet I think.
01:31So far cameras have been installed on South Road at Torrensville, the North South Motorway
01:35at Regency Park, Port Wakefield Road at Gepps Cross, the Southern Expressway at Darlington
01:41and Port Road at Hindmarsh, with two more to come online next year.
01:45And I'll make the point, these mobile phone detection camera locations are not at traffic
01:50light locations.
01:51They are not picking up people who are stationary, these are people who are mobile and driving
01:56underneath the camera.
01:58A last warning before offending drivers will be forced to cough up.
