Le célesta est un instrument de musique inventé en 1886 par Auguste Victor Mustel, un facteur d’harmoniums parisien. Cet instrument est un hybride entre le glockenspiel et le piano, où des marteaux actionnés par les touches du clavier frappent des lames métalliques. Le célesta produit un son pur et éthéré, souvent utilisé pour créer des effets féeriques et merveilleux dans les compositions orchestrales.
Le célesta a été utilisé pour la première fois dans une œuvre orchestrale par Pyotr Ilyich Tchaïkovski dans son ballet “Casse-Noisette”.
