A year on from the death of Fernando Botero, one of the largest exhibitions ever dedicated to the artist has opened in Rome. The show at Palazzo Bonaparte includes several previously unseen works by the Colombian painter and sculptor.

00:23of the death of my father, but it also highlights the importance that Italy had, which was
00:29somehow like a second home for my father in his work and in his artistic career and

00:46The reason why Fernando Botero is important is precisely because he created a unique and
00:52original style and because he always remained in a separate category from all the other
00:57artists.
00:58Throughout his life, my father walked a very lonely path in this sense, because he often
01:04swam against the prevailing trends in the world of art.
01:08When he arrived in New York in the 1960s, he was a figurative artist, while what prevailed
01:14at that time was pop art and abstract expressionism.
01:18So, this unique style is what has made him recognizable all over the world.
