School caretaker "Flatfoot" Mason, a former Music-hall artiste harbours a secret. He has a daughter, Betty who unbeknownst to her was adopted when his wife died. Now a teenager, she's a pupil at the school, which causes complications when the staff feel that Randle is being "over attentive" to Betty. Told to steer clear of her, Flatfoot reluctantly agrees, but Betty thinks he's rejecting her and decides to run away to make her name in show-business. Randle, assisted by his fellow caretakers, trace her to a seedy cabaret club and tries to persuade her to come home, but will she listen or risk spiralling into a life of debauchery?

00:00:00This is the school that you've heard all about.
00:00:28This is the famous school for randles.
00:00:31We've got a head who is never in doubt.
00:00:34That's the famous school for randles.
00:00:38Holidays are never too long.
00:00:41Scholarship is not very strong.
00:00:44But you will all have the time of your life when we shout.
00:00:47This is the school, school, school, school for randles.
00:00:58Girls and boys come out to play.
00:01:05The sun is shining bright today.
00:01:07Let us take our blues away and have some fun.
00:01:27Lady Andrews, come here a moment.
00:01:29Now remember what I told you.
00:01:30Yes, Miss Weston.
00:01:31Keep away from those boys.
00:01:32Yes, Miss Weston.
00:01:33I don't want any more trouble with you.
00:01:35No, Miss Weston.
00:01:36Getting worse all the time.
00:01:37All this quarrelling between you girls and the boys over the other side.
00:01:40Well, it isn't our fault really, Miss Weston.
00:01:42The boys start it every time.
00:01:43They won't leave us alone anyway.
00:01:44Never mind this.
00:01:45Keep away from them and they can't start any trouble, can they?
00:01:48No, Miss Weston.
00:01:49Go on now.
00:02:20Parker.
00:02:21Sir.
00:02:22There's something I want to say to you, Parker, before you go away.
00:02:25Yes, Mr. Nicholls.
00:02:26Stay away from the girls.
00:02:27I'm just about tired of having to sort out your squabbles.
00:02:30Now let's have no more of it.
00:02:31Yes, sir, but it isn't always our fault, you know.
00:02:33It's the girls who start most of the trouble.
00:02:35If you keep your distance, they can't start anything.
00:02:37Now is that quite clear?
00:02:39Yes, sir.
00:02:40Very well.
00:02:41Remember it.
00:02:42You know what he wants?
00:02:43What?
00:02:44We've got to keep away from the girls.
00:02:58Hey, that's a nice looking ball those girls have got there.
00:03:01Seems a pity to waste it on a sissy game like netball.
00:03:04That's just what I was thinking.
00:03:06I don't know about you chaps, but I'm just feeling like a bit of soccer fan.
00:03:10Isn't that about it?
00:03:11Yes.
00:03:12How's old Rich Potter?
00:03:13After what he said about keeping away from the girls?
00:03:16Oh, he won't see us.
00:03:17Anyway, it's only for a couple of minutes.
00:03:18Let's get our own back on those females for speaking to their headmaster about us.
00:03:22Come on, chaps.
00:03:25Right, come on then.

00:05:02Ow!
00:05:03Ow!
00:05:04Ow!
00:05:05Ow!
00:05:06Ow!
00:05:07If those fellas come round here again, they'll give me the biggest pasting they've ever had in their lives. I promise you. Come on.
00:05:16Ooh! Oh, I'm sorry.
00:05:21Oh, it isn't so bad after all, is it?
00:05:24Oh, that's lovely. You ought to have been a nurse, Slatt. I mean, Mr. Randall.
00:05:28I heard you the first time. You were going to call me Flatfoot, weren't you?
00:05:31Oh, I never was.
00:05:32Of course you were. All the kids called me Flatfoot behind me back.
00:05:35Well, some of them do.
00:05:36Yeah, they all do. So do you, don't you?
00:05:41Well, I'll put a bit of plaster on this. It'll keep the dirt out.
00:05:44What's your mother going to say about this?
00:05:46Oh, I'll tell her I fell down. That'll be true, won't it?
00:05:49I suppose so. Won't she be angry?
00:05:51Oh, Mummy and Daddy are never angry with me.
00:05:53No?
00:05:54Well, hardly ever.
00:05:55I suppose I'm spoilt, really. I'm an only child, you know.
00:05:59Yeah, I know.
00:06:02Careful.
00:06:04Hold on.
00:06:05You'll be all right.
00:06:06I'd like you to meet my Mummy and Daddy one day.
00:06:08I'm always telling them about you.
00:06:10Why? How's that?
00:06:11Well, I tell them you're really one of the most famous characters in our school.
00:06:14Oh.
00:06:15They're really very nice when a person gets to know you properly.
00:06:18Even if you do act like an old sourpuss sometimes.
00:06:20Oh, I do, do I? What do they say to that?
00:06:22Well, they say they'd like to meet you if you're a friend of mine.
00:06:25I don't see why your father and mother should be so interested in me.
00:06:28Oh, well.
00:06:29Well, I think you'll be all right now.
00:06:31It's a poor job, but it's the best I can do.
00:06:33And don't do it again.
00:06:35Mr. Randolph?
00:06:36Huh?
00:06:37What do you think of Ted Parker?
00:06:40He's a smart young fellow, is that?
00:06:42Both at lessons and sport.
00:06:44Of course, he ought to be good at sport. I'm training him.
00:06:46Training? What for?
00:06:47Well, for the swimming championship, of course.
00:06:50Or you ought to win it easily, the pair of you.
00:06:53Why are you so bothered about him?
00:06:55I thought you had it inside of each other, the way you're always squabbling.
00:07:00Say, don't tell me you're falling for him, the way he treated you today.
00:07:04Don't be silly. Of course I'm not.
00:07:07I think he's falling for you, though.
00:07:09No. Anyway, I don't care if he is.
00:07:12Thanks, ever so. I must be off.
00:07:15Mr. Randolph?
00:07:16Hmm?
00:07:17Do you really think he's falling for me?
00:07:19Go on, hop it. He shouldn't be here anyway.
00:07:22Hmm.
00:07:24You!
00:07:27A very special subject for today's lesson.
00:07:30The Education Committee, in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture,
00:07:34has arranged a series of lectures about British farm life.
00:07:38These will be given by Professor Dunbar here.
00:07:41The professor has been travelling round the various schools,
00:07:44giving these very interesting lectures about farm life,
00:07:47and today it's our privilege to listen to him.
00:07:50Now, professor, I shall lead you to your work.
00:07:52Thank you, madam.
00:07:55Now, young ladies.
00:07:57You will see that from the collection of animal and birds here,
00:08:01that these lectures are going to be of great interest to you.
00:08:05There we have some specimen pigeons.
00:08:07Now, these pigeons have been collected from nine separate countries.
00:08:11In fact, they're the only ones of their kind in captivity.
00:08:14The Ministry valuing them at 500 pounds each.
00:08:18There are ducks, guinea pigs.
00:08:20These animals have been round the world with me for demonstration purposes,
00:08:24so that I can prove their value to the farming industry.
00:08:28I will speak of these animals later.
00:08:30Now, here is a most ingenious model of the common cow.
00:08:34It has been made especially for educational demonstrations.
00:08:37By the aid of these switches,
00:08:40I am enabled to illuminate any portion of the animal to which I might refer.
00:08:45I'm sorry to interrupt you, professor,
00:08:47but before you start your lecture, the headmistress would like a few words with you.
00:08:50Very good, madam.
00:08:52Oh, Betty.
00:08:53Yes, miss Weston?
00:08:55Will you take charge of the class for me until the professor returns?
00:08:58Very good, miss Weston.
00:09:05Now, stop that!
00:09:06Behave yourselves!
00:09:07There's going to be trouble!
00:09:08Oh, dry up!
00:09:11Oh, don't get as well-headed now that you're left in charge.
00:09:14Now, don't be a silly ass.
00:09:15Do you want to blow the thing up?
00:09:18Where do you go?
00:09:19Where do you go?
00:09:21Where do you go?
00:09:23Where do you go?
00:09:27What's going on over there?
00:09:29I think we're sticking a pig in.
00:09:30Sounds like it.
00:09:34Get out of the way.
00:09:37There's enough for in there without you messing about.
00:09:41Will you do as you're told?
00:09:44Oh, get out!
00:09:52Stop that noise!
00:09:53I haven't heard any lesson.
00:09:54The pitch is better than your old school.
00:09:56Let's have a little more quietness, please.
00:09:58No, quite right.
00:09:59Yes, and you take that sweet out of your mouth.
00:10:01Put your feet in.
00:10:02What?
00:10:03Where's miss Weston?
00:10:04She's gone to see the headmistress and left me in charge.
00:10:06But these girls won't take any notice of me.
00:10:08They'll take notice of me, I'll tell you.
00:10:10Now, shut up!
00:10:12That's right, and get on with your lessons.
00:10:14But we haven't any lessons to get on with.
00:10:16We're waiting for Professor Dunbell.
00:10:17What Bell?
00:10:18Dunbell.
00:10:19He's come to give us a lecture on farming.
00:10:21And he's brought that thing with him.
00:10:22What the hell's that?
00:10:23Next year's Derby winner?
00:10:24The professor says it's an electric cow for demonstration.
00:10:27You press those buttons and its innards light up.
00:10:30It's... well, never mind.
00:10:32Now listen, you girls are not fit to be left on your own.
00:10:34I'll take this lecture until Dog's body comes back.
00:10:37Why? Do you know anything about farming, Mr. Randall?
00:10:39There's two things I know nothing at all about, and farming is both of them.
00:10:42Now leave it to me.
00:10:43Hey.
00:10:44Hello?
00:10:45No, you come here.
00:10:47Very well, then.
00:10:48If the mountain won't come to Montgomery, then, uh...
00:10:52it counts for it.
00:10:53Exactly.
00:10:54Does it?
00:10:55So you've got to have the black cap at last, eh?
00:10:57There we are.
00:10:58Oh, dear, oh, dear.
00:10:59You should have been hanging long ago.
00:11:01Fungus on, there we are.
00:11:03What's that, a moth?
00:11:05Oh, it's a look at you.
00:11:06That's it.
00:11:07Now smile, smile.
00:11:09Smile.
00:11:10More like a road accident.
00:11:11Well, well, all right now.
00:11:13You get the equipment.
00:11:14Okay.
00:11:18What do you want?
00:11:19What have you got?
00:11:20Don't be facetious.
00:11:23What did I say, then?
00:11:24You said, uh, facetious.
00:11:26What does that mean?
00:11:27I don't know.
00:11:28I hope it isn't rude.
00:11:31Leave those seagulls alone.
00:11:32They're very precious.
00:11:34I'm a good student.
00:11:35Don't.
00:11:38I say, there's a few letters missing from this alphabet.
00:11:41Oh, never mind.
00:11:42We'll replace those.
00:11:43Right, right, right, right.
00:11:44And now to blind these mugs with science.
00:11:47Please, uh, switch on.
00:11:50Yes!
00:11:52You silly thing.
00:11:54Certainly.
00:11:55That's the wrong switch.
00:11:56This is the one.
00:11:59Well, uh, perhaps I'd better leave it to you.
00:12:02You understand.
00:12:03Yes.
00:12:06Call yourself a professor?
00:12:09Come on.
00:12:12Hey, hey, hey!
00:12:14Put them back.
00:12:15Put them back.
00:12:16Oh.
00:12:17They flew away.
00:12:19Well, I couldn't help it.
00:12:22They flew away.
00:12:26Do you know what you've done?
00:12:28These seagulls cost about one in six each.
00:12:31One in six?
00:12:32Yes.
00:12:33Well, somebody's been robbed.
00:12:34What?
00:12:35Those seagulls are pigeons, and there's another one flown away.
00:12:38That's it.
00:12:39And another one.
00:12:40That's three shillings gone again.
00:12:42And I don't care whether they are seagulls or pigeons.
00:12:46Don't argue with me anyway.
00:12:48Oh, get over it.
00:12:49What do you think you're doing?
00:12:50What do you think you're doing?
00:12:51I don't know what I'm doing.
00:12:53I'll do that to you.
00:12:54Oh, look at that.
00:12:56That's it.
00:12:58Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:13:01This is going to hurt you a jolly great more than it's going to hurt me.
00:13:06Oh, horse.
00:13:08Oh.
00:13:09Oh.
00:13:10Oh.

00:36:47Oh.
00:36:48Oh.
00:36:49Oh, that's a theatrical paper, isn't it?
00:36:58Yes.
00:36:59I used to be in the business once.
00:37:00Oh, what were you?
00:37:01The face at the window?
00:37:02Oh, it's all right, you laughing.
00:37:03I was pretty good, I'll tell you.
00:37:04You remember that good old stage play, The Girl Who Took The Wrong Turning?
00:37:05Yes.
00:37:06Well, I'm the chap who took her up it.
00:37:07You were?
00:37:08And believe me, you've been a nasty old man ever since.
00:37:09I played Hamlet once.
00:37:10Oh, when?
00:37:11You're too damned inquisitive, that's for sure.
00:37:12Oh, I'm not.
00:37:13I'm not.
00:37:14I'm not.
00:37:15I'm not.
00:37:16I'm not.
00:37:17I'm not.
00:37:18It's all right.
00:37:19That's the trouble with you.
00:37:20You played Hamlet?
00:37:21Yes, and I was pretty good, I'll tell you.
00:37:23You, Hamlet?
00:37:24Lawrence and Olivia had knout on me.
00:37:25On the stage?
00:37:26On the stage, yes.
00:37:27You did?
00:37:28Yes.
00:37:29Shh.
00:37:30I'd like to hear this.
00:37:39To be or not to be, that is the question.
00:37:45All right, all right.
00:37:48Oh, well, if you're going to laugh, I won't do it!
00:37:50Oh!
00:37:51Oh, no, I can't!
00:37:51That's what you call Shakespeare!
00:37:53I call that Shakespeare!
00:37:55Well, I'm not doing it, you're taking the mic out of me, that's what I did!
00:37:56Oh, no, no, no, do!
00:37:58Please do it for us!
00:37:59I will not!
00:38:00I'll do!
00:38:01Do Hamlet for us, please!
00:38:03Go on!
00:38:04Very well, then!
00:38:06All right, I'll do it properly!
00:38:08And don't laugh this time, will you?
00:38:09All right, all right, all right!
00:38:10You'll see Hamlet played as you've never seen it played before!
00:38:14Aahh!
00:38:16Let me at it!
00:38:18Carry on, carry on!
00:38:19Thank you!
00:38:20Right!
00:38:24Whether it is nobler in the mind to suffer the slings of a great fortune, or a...
00:38:30Oohh!
00:38:33Oohh!
00:38:33Now, did Olivia do that?
00:38:35She didn't!
00:38:36She didn't play it the way I do!
00:38:39I should think not!
00:38:41To die, to sleep, and thus sleeping, and this heartache, but...
00:38:48Heartburn?
00:38:49Oohh, I get it, something shocking!
00:38:51Cruel!
00:38:51It catches me right here!
00:38:52That's a funny thing, every time I've heartburn, it gives me potato pie!
00:38:55Yes, yes!
00:38:56No, no, no, you mean every time you have potato pie, it gives you heartburn?
00:39:00I said every time I've heart potatoes, it gives me...
00:39:02Shut up, you're pulling me off!
00:39:04Pulling you off?
00:39:05You will never run!
00:39:06Quiet!
00:39:07To die, to sleep, perchance to dream, ah, there's the rub!
00:39:14Who knows, in that sleep of death, what dreams may come before we shuffle off this mortal coil!
00:39:21Don't lie on your back that you won't have dreams!
00:39:25Thanks very much!
00:39:28The poor man's contubulae?
00:39:31What the hell does contubulae mean?
00:39:32Well, I don't know, I think it's French, like, um...
00:39:35Au revoir, and bonsoir, and skin off your nose!
00:39:38Yeah, cheerio!
00:39:39Good health!
00:39:41Softly now, au faire Ophelia!
00:39:44Aye, aye!
00:39:45Aye, aye! Aye, aye!
00:39:46Ha, ha!
00:39:47I've been waiting for her coming in!
00:39:50Fair nymph, by all thy horizons, be my sins remembered!
00:39:55Such talk, remembering that kind of a girl!
00:39:58Get thee to a monterey!
00:40:01Go see real fur!
00:40:04I've some more on this side as well!
00:40:07How dare you talk to your young woman like that!
00:40:09Me, me, that's been so true to you all the time, the yanks were over here!
00:40:14Oh!
00:40:16Me!
00:40:17Me!
00:40:17Me!
00:40:18Me!
00:40:18Me!
00:40:19Me!
00:40:19Me!
00:40:20Me!
00:40:20Me!
00:40:21Me!
00:40:21Me!
00:40:22Me!
00:40:22Me!
00:40:23Me!
00:40:23Me!
00:40:24Me!
00:40:24Me!
00:40:25Me!
00:40:25Me!
00:40:26Me!
00:40:26Me!
00:40:27Me!
00:40:28When the church was opened, the grave shone until the dead!
00:40:33Come, lead on back up!
00:40:36Lead on boys!
00:40:37Come, boys, take down the perilous mass for your mighty feet!
00:40:45What holy hearts are rooting for us!
00:40:48Still breathing!
00:40:48Oh!
00:40:49Oh!
00:40:49Oh!
00:40:50Oh!
00:40:50Oh!
00:40:51Oh!
00:40:51Oh!
00:40:52Oh!
00:40:52Oh!
00:40:53Oh!
00:40:53Oh!
00:40:54Lead on, Maxwell!
00:40:54Oh!
00:40:55Oh!
00:40:55And what for is not? Shakespeare, he couldn't play dominoes.
00:41:07Hamlet! Hamlet! I am thy father, Gibleth.
00:41:25Well, anyway, I didn't think much of it. Well, I still think it was a good show, and
00:41:38I don't care what you say, Betty. Some of it was all right, but that singer was terrible.
00:41:42I suppose you could do much better, couldn't you?
00:41:44Yes, I could, if I had the chance. Well, never mind, kid, you aren't likely to
00:41:47get the chance. Is that so? Well, I know where I could get a job on
00:41:50the stage tomorrow, if I liked. I bet you could. Where?
00:41:53Oh, never mind arguing. Just look at the time. Ten past eleven.
00:41:57Gosh, is it? Oh, I must be alive. Come along, Pat.
00:42:01Good night, Betty. Good night.
00:42:02Good night. That'll be better now, dear.
00:42:03Don't be too harsh with her. Hello, folks.
00:42:19Hello, darling. You're late, and you haven't done your homework yet.
00:42:30Oh, blow my homework. Oh, don't talk like that, Betty. Where have
00:42:32you been all this time? Oh, Daddy, I told you. I've been to the
00:42:35palace with Pat and Phyllis. It was a lovely night, so we walked home.
00:42:38The palace? Oh, I might have known. Can't you ever get your mind off the stage?
00:42:42But I don't want to get my mind off it. Oh, Daddy, won't you let me...
00:42:46Oh, don't start that again, Betty. I thought we'd settled this preposterous
00:42:49idea once and for all. Oh, what's preposterous about it? Lots of
00:42:53other girls go on the stage. I don't care what other girls do. All I know
00:42:56is that you're not going. But, Daddy, why?
00:43:00Good heavens, I've told you over and over again. Your mother and I don't want you to
00:43:04go on the stage. Doesn't matter what I want, I suppose.
00:43:06Betty, you're too young to know your own mind yet. This stage idea is just a passing fad.
00:43:11You'll get over it. It's not a passing fad. If it were, I wouldn't
00:43:15have taken all that trouble with my singing and dancing lessons.
00:43:18My ambition is to go on the stage, and I'm... Well, you're not going, and the sooner you
00:43:21realize it, the better it'll be for all of us.
00:43:23I am going on the stage, and nobody's going to stop me.
00:43:29I don't know what's come over her. Don't talk to me like that, Betty.
00:43:35I think the best thing you can do is to go upstairs to bed.
00:43:37I'll have no more of these silly arguments. You are not going on the stage, and there's
00:43:41an end of it. Good night, Mummy.
00:43:43Good night, darling. Come along. I'll come and tuck you in.
00:43:48Good night, Betty. Good night, Daddy.
00:43:53Well, it seems we're set on this stage idea. Heaven knows we've done everything we could
00:43:58to discourage her. Maybe it's in the girl's blood, some urge
00:44:02that is greater than our discouragement. What do you mean?
00:44:05One of the drawbacks of adopting a child. It may have hereditary ideas, but they're
00:44:11stronger than its foster parents' wishes. Well, you'd better go up and see her, my dear.
00:44:15Good night, George.
00:44:58Single to Northbrook, please.
00:45:09Can you grow?
00:45:28Dear Mum and Dad, when you read this, I shall have gone away.
00:45:40Please don't be angry, but I think I've got the chance of a job on the stage.
00:45:46And if it comes off, I know I'll be a star one day, and you'll be proud of me.
00:45:52What made her take this drastic step? Well, my husband was angry with her last
00:45:56night for becoming home late, and she adopted an attitude of defiance.
00:46:00Really? We found the letter on her dressing table this morning.
00:46:03But this stage business she mentions, have you any idea where she might have gone to?
00:46:07Not the slightest. That's why I telephoned asking you to call.
00:46:11I thought you might be able to help us trace her.
00:46:13When I got your message, I went to Miss Hodge, and she suggested we both came out here at
00:46:17once. As headmistress of the school, I'm naturally
00:46:19anxious to do everything in my power to help you, Mr. Andrews.
00:46:21Thank you. Our first idea, of course, was to go straight
00:46:24to the police and ask them to help us. But we wanted to avoid any scandal.
00:46:27We'd rather keep the police out of it. Yes, yes, of course.
00:46:31Couldn't you make inquiries around the school to find out if any of Betty's
00:46:35friends know where she might have gone? Yes, that's a good idea. We'll do that.
00:46:39Although for the moment, I don't think we need tell anybody the true facts.
00:46:42We might say that Betty's away from school with a slight illness.
00:46:46Yes. And in the meantime, don't worry too much, Mrs. Andrews.
00:46:51We'll do everything in our power to find Betty and bring her safely home.
00:46:55I hope so. She's so, so young running off like this,
00:46:59and I've no idea where. Well, I think we'd better get back to the school now.
00:47:05Oh, Mr. Andrews, don't forget the old boys' association is holding its meeting
00:47:08tonight, and you're in the chair. I'll be there.
00:47:10My husband will run you along in the car. Oh, yes, of course.
00:47:13Goodbye, Mr. Andrews. Goodbye.
00:47:21Professor, they haven't forgotten that yet.
00:47:23Oh, don't you worry about me. As long as Mr. Nichols is still there, I'm all right.
00:47:28Now then, where have they got to? What?
00:47:31The glasses. I...
00:47:33They were here about five minutes since I was using them.
00:47:35Have you seen the glasses? Yes, Benny's got them.
00:47:38I mean, now we're flattered. No.
00:47:41Oh. Where are they, for heaven's sake, Betty?
00:47:45Mind being careful!
00:47:47Where are they, for heaven's sake, Betty?
00:47:49Mind being careful!
00:47:55Well, get some.
00:47:57Well, get some from somewhere. Don't worry me.
00:48:01Yes, anything you like.
00:48:03As long as...
00:48:05They must be here.
00:48:07Oh, God.
00:48:09I can't... Come in.
00:48:13How you doing?
00:48:15There's the keys.
00:48:17That's all right. Five's a fine.
00:48:19Good. And take your hats off him, Eddie Fisk.
00:48:21Oh, sorry. Oh, put them back.
00:48:23Well, come on. Yes, we'll go now.
00:48:25Where are you off? What do you think?
00:48:27One or two. Yes, we're going to the horse and jockey. Come in.
00:48:29Aye, I'll follow you down later. Good.
00:48:31Well, I'll line them up for you. Yes, and tell them I want my froth at the bottom.
00:48:35Right. See you later.
00:48:37See you later.
00:48:39Well, I can't understand where they've gone to.
00:48:41Listen, are you sure you haven't seen my space anywhere?
00:48:44No. Oh, come out of it.
00:48:46My pen's gone now.
00:48:48I can find nothing at all here.
00:48:50Show me your glasses. I don't need them.
00:48:52Goodness, what's happened here?
00:48:54What's all this about?
00:48:56I did it. You did it?
00:48:58Yes, well, he told me to do it. He said I could chop it up.
00:49:00Chop this, yes.
00:49:02What are you talking about?
00:49:04Come here, you fatty.
00:49:06I'll show you some chopping.
00:49:08Leave him alone.
00:49:10Just a minute.
00:49:12That's what he's done to you, boy.
00:49:17That's what he's done to you. Stop it.
00:49:19Nothing to see here.
00:49:21Serves you jolly well right.
00:49:23He's a sweet little boy and it's not fair.
00:49:27You'll frighten the poor little thing to death.
00:49:30Besides, he was only trying to help you.
00:49:32Help me? He'll smash the place to pieces.
00:49:34Don't be silly. We all like to come and help you.
00:49:36Thanks very much. I appreciate it.
00:49:38I wish Mrs. Jackson was back, though.
00:49:41Oh, you mean the cleaner from the school?
00:49:43Oh, what a wonderful woman.
00:49:45Oh, keeps the place like a new pin.
00:49:47Makes the beds, empties all the oil from the lumps.
00:49:49Puts fresh wicking.
00:49:51Oh, she does all sorts for me.
00:49:53Flatfoot.
00:49:55I'd do anything for you.
00:49:57What?
00:49:59You know, you wouldn't be bad looking
00:50:01if you had another face.
00:50:05You've got something.
00:50:07You think so?
00:50:09Flatfoot,
00:50:11have you never thought of taking another wife?
00:50:13I did once,
00:50:15but her husband nearly flattened me.
00:50:17Have you never felt the need
00:50:19of a woman's arms around you?
00:50:23Oh, give away.
00:50:25Flatfoot,
00:50:27wouldn't you...
00:50:29No, I wouldn't.
00:50:31Wouldn't you like to kiss me?
00:50:33I wish I could find my glasses.
00:50:35Now what's happening?
00:50:37What did I tell you?
00:50:39I'm going down to the village.
00:50:41I'll finish your ironing when I come back.
00:50:43Look, Lucy, I found it.
00:50:45Get it out of here.
00:50:47I found it before it was lost.
00:50:49Get it out.
00:50:51I don't know where to go.
00:50:53I know where it's got to go.
00:50:55Let's keep it as a pet.
00:50:57Oh, go on.
00:50:59Will you get it out?
00:51:01I've got a name for it.
00:51:03I'm going to call it the happy breed.
00:51:05It looks old.
00:51:07Will you take the plastic thing out?
00:51:09I think it's going to run.
00:51:11Stand up.
00:51:13Let's keep it.
00:51:15Take it in my bedroom, if you like.
00:51:17What about the smell?
00:51:19It'll have to put up with that.
00:51:21Will you get it out before I strangle you?
00:51:23Get the thing out.
00:51:25Just get me in bother.
00:51:27Take it away.
00:51:29Go on.
00:51:31Get up.
00:51:35I'll bring an elephant next time.
00:51:45Now I'm down in the village, is there anything I can get for you?
00:51:47Yes, get me some prussic acid.
00:51:49And some fresh lettuce.
00:51:51Never mind.
00:51:53Come in.
00:51:57I've got this now.
00:51:59Oh, no.
00:52:01Oh, yes.
00:52:03What do you keep bringing things in like that for?
00:52:05I pay sixpence for it.
00:52:07Wasting money like that.
00:52:09Where did you get your sixpence from?
00:52:11A pound.
00:52:13Where?
00:52:15In that pot up there.
00:52:17That's my money box.
00:52:19It's got a pedigree.
00:52:21Keep it away from the table.
00:52:23It's out of the cilia by breathing.
00:52:25I don't care if it's out of condition by heartbeat.
00:52:27Will you take it away?
00:52:29Listen, my son dog.
00:52:32I'll go and get more.
00:52:34He'll go and get one.
00:52:36Get out of here.
00:52:38Oh, you won't let me have anything.
00:52:40You won't let me have a pony.
00:52:42You won't let me have a dog.
00:52:44You won't let me have a blue bucket.
00:52:46I know what I'll let you have.
00:52:48Give it to me.
00:53:00Dogs. Blue bottles.
00:53:02Here. A blue bottle.
00:53:09Ah, here's the headmistress now.
00:53:11Oh, Miss Hodge, we've been talking about Betty Andrews.
00:53:13Have you found anything out there?
00:53:15She talked about going on the stage,
00:53:17but it's almost a week now since she left home.
00:53:19Unless we've discovered something by tonight,
00:53:21I really think we should tell the Andrews to phone the police.
00:53:23I do so hate the bad publicity.
00:53:25Both for them and for the school.
00:53:27But there may be no alternative.
00:53:29Have you talked to everybody who knew anything about her?
00:53:31Well, I thought we had,
00:53:33but Miss Weston has just remembered somebody else.
00:53:35Oh, who's that?
00:53:37Randall the caretaker.
00:53:39What will he know?
00:53:41Well, it's merely a wild guess that he knows anything at all.
00:53:43But you remember how very friendly he always was with Betty Andrews.
00:53:45Well, it's a possibility worth following up.
00:53:47I was wondering if you'd like to talk to Randall, Mr. Nichols.
00:53:49Yes, of course I will.
00:53:51May I have that letter?
00:53:53Oh, but Randall's out on road work
00:53:55with the boys at the moment.
00:53:57Oh, never mind. I'll speak to him when he comes back.
00:53:59Yes, do.
00:54:15Come on!
00:54:32Parker!
00:54:34Sir?
00:54:36You having a good exercise?
00:54:38Yes, sir, thank you very much.
00:54:40How's he shaping?
00:54:42There you are, you see, sir.
00:54:44I thought Randall was with you.
00:54:46Oh, he was, sir, but he gave up.
00:54:48Why? He told me he was a good runner.
00:54:50Ah, he was, but he's worn his feet out.
00:54:52Yes, I think he's walking on his knees now.
00:54:54Where is he?
00:54:56I think he's cooling off in the boiler house.
00:54:58You cut off and have a shower.
00:55:00You two come with me.
00:55:02Yes, sir.
00:55:06Well, that silly little fool.
00:55:08I thought she'd been ill all the week.
00:55:10The headmistress put that story round
00:55:13and it just wouldn't come out.
00:55:15We were wondering if Betty told anything to you
00:55:17that she didn't confide in anyone else
00:55:19exactly where she went for this stage job.
00:55:21Why should she tell me?
00:55:23Now, listen, Randall, you and Betty were good friends, weren't you?
00:55:25I suppose so.
00:55:27Well, didn't she ever say anything to you about her stage ambitions?
00:55:29Yes, she did.
00:55:31I tried to talk her out of them, though,
00:55:33but it seems I was wasting me time.
00:55:35Now, listen, we do know that she left home to go on the stage.
00:55:37Didn't she ever say anything to you
00:55:39that might suggest exactly where she went?
00:55:41She did, yes.
00:55:43It was only last week she told me she had a chance
00:55:45of a job on a stage show.
00:55:47I'll bet a pound that's where she went.
00:55:49Now, where was it?
00:55:51I'll tell her father to go and get her right away.
00:55:53Her father?
00:55:55Well, certainly he's the one to look after Mrs. Fenn now, isn't he?
00:55:57I don't know.
00:55:59No, no, leave it to me, will you?
00:56:01I'd do better than her father.
00:56:03Yes, but what shall I tell Andrew?
00:56:05Well, just say that a certain party
00:56:07is insistent on doing things in his own way
00:56:09and he thinks he knows where Betty's gone.
00:56:11I suppose you know what you're doing.
00:56:13I think so.
00:56:15If Betty's gone where I think she's gone,
00:56:17I'll have her safe at home by tomorrow.
00:56:19You wait and see.
00:56:21Very well, I will.
00:56:23I hope you're right.
00:56:27Oh, you know, this coke smells just like gas.
00:56:29Well, don't talk too much.
00:56:31Oh, we'll have to keep the cat off this coke.
00:56:35Yes, I think we'd better get rid of it.
00:56:37Let's get some rats in for a change.
00:56:41That's it. This week.
00:56:43Shooters and capers.
00:56:45Theatre Royal, Littlefield.
00:56:47Hey, come here.
00:56:49What's wrong?
00:56:51We're going on a trip.
00:56:53Where to?
00:56:55Littlefield.
00:56:57Don't keep saying Littlefield.
00:56:59We're going to the Theatre Royal, Littlefield.
00:57:01We're going to the Theatre Royal, Littlefield.
00:57:03Now, come on.
00:57:05Everything happens to me.
00:57:14Excuse me.
00:57:16Does your bus go to Littlefield?
00:57:18No, we're going to Aberystwyth.
00:57:20What with?
00:57:22Aberystwyth.
00:57:24Oh, I thought you were going to say...
00:57:26I know a little nursery rhyme about Aberystwyth.
00:57:28There was a young woman and chap from Aberystwyth...
00:57:30Baba.
00:57:32No, that isn't the one.
00:57:35What's Littlefield on the front for?
00:57:37Because they can't spell Aberystwyth.
00:57:39Now, listen, don't be silly messes about.
00:57:41You are going to Littlefield.
00:57:43We're not going to Littlefield.
00:57:45We are going to Aberystwyth.
00:57:47We're going to Aberystwyth.
00:57:49Little Aberfyth.
00:57:51I'll tell you what we'll do.
00:57:53We'll go to Littlefield.
00:57:55Yes, right.
00:57:57How do you know we'll get there?
00:57:59Look at that last night.
00:58:0147 people killed on the bus.
00:58:0348.
00:58:05I'm walking it.
00:58:07No, you don't.
00:58:09Wait a minute.
00:58:11Hold it.
00:58:13I thought that was me breakfast coming up.
00:58:15This is no time to masticate your food, man.
00:58:17Well, listen, I'm going on top.
00:58:19You can't.
00:58:21Go on, get inside.
00:58:23Get off my foot.
00:58:29No, you missed the hole.
00:58:31Excuse me.
00:58:33I'll show you.
00:58:35Come on, don't mess about.
00:58:37Come on.
00:59:03I'm sorry.
00:59:05OK, boys.
00:59:07Can't you see the cables?
00:59:09Oh, come on.
00:59:11It's not there.
00:59:13Put out the cables and keep away from these scully.
00:59:15So, this is the joint?
00:59:17Don't call this dump a joint.
00:59:19Now, how about this doorman?
00:59:21What about the doorman?
00:59:23Of course you've got to.
00:59:25I haven't got any money.
00:59:27Look again.
00:59:29You owe me five shillings.
00:59:30Half a crown. You still owe me half a crown.
00:59:32Here, you owe me five shillings. You still owe me half a crown.
00:59:35That's funny. You owe me five of. Laundry, remember?
00:59:37All of the laundry. Well, I still owe you half a crown.
00:59:38That's right. You owe me half a crown. Now we're quits.
00:59:40Yes. And you owe me a half a crown. Now we're quits.
00:59:42Now we're all quits.
00:59:43We're all right. Yes.
00:59:44Well, come on, then. We'll get into it.
00:59:45Ah, we're diminished.
00:59:46How about my half a dollar?
00:59:48Oh, we can't be bothered. We've got no time for that.
00:59:49I've twisted myself.
00:59:51Oh, come on.
00:59:52Well, I don't care.
00:59:53I'll fix him. I'll fix him.
00:59:59Good evening.
01:00:00Hey, where do you think you're going?
01:00:01We're going to see a girl.
01:00:02Oh, no, you're not.
01:00:03Oh, yes, we are.
01:00:04Did I say you're not?
01:00:05Well, I say... Oh, he's getting to it now.
01:00:07I say we are.
01:00:08Yes, we are.
01:00:09Hey, hey, hey.
01:00:10Careful, careful.
01:00:11Oh, yes.
01:00:12Yes, it is.
01:00:15What are you playing at?
01:00:17There's no business except on business.
01:00:18Oh, but we are on business.
01:00:20Of course we are.
01:00:21What business?
01:00:22He's come to see one of the girls.
01:00:23That's right.
01:00:24I'm surprised that you're a man of your age.
01:00:26What do you mean, my age?
01:00:28Chasing chorus girls, and you old duck be that father?
01:00:31Look at you.
01:00:32What?
01:00:33Look at you.
01:00:34What do you say he did?
01:00:36I'm telling you, I haven't come chasing chorus girls.
01:00:40Of course you have.
01:00:41Go on, get out of here or I'll give you a charge.
01:00:43I must be civil enough.
01:00:45Can I see one of the ladies in the show?
01:00:47I know you are.
01:00:49I know what for.
01:00:50Oh, shut up.
01:00:51Oh, he stumbled.
01:00:53What?
01:00:54Does he think I'm...
01:00:55He does, yes.
01:00:56Yes?
01:00:57He didn't knock his block off, did he?
01:00:58He had, yes.
01:00:59Oh, my God.
01:01:00Come on, come on, come on.
01:01:02Don't be silly, don't be silly.
01:01:03Come on.
01:01:04Oh, it's a good job he didn't let go.
01:01:06Yes.
01:01:07With a temper like yours...
01:01:08He'd have flattened me.
01:01:09No, he wouldn't.
01:01:10Oh, I've got an idea.
01:01:11What is it?
01:01:12Come on.
01:01:13Right.
01:01:14I bet this is a smagger.
01:01:15Well?
01:01:16Well?
01:01:17Yes.
01:01:18The idea.
01:01:19Oh, the idea.
01:01:20Yes.
01:01:21What was it?
01:01:22I've just forgotten.
01:01:23Do you know?
01:01:24I wasn't looking.
01:01:25I'll tell you what I thought.
01:01:26Supposing I...
01:01:27No.
01:01:28I'd like to walk round there myself.
01:01:29Oh, with a ladder that size?
01:01:30It's impossible.
01:01:31Too small.
01:01:32Hmm.
01:01:33Now then, perhaps if...
01:01:34No, I don't think so.
01:01:35What?
01:01:36I'm afraid.
01:01:37Yes.
01:01:38Yes.
01:01:39If we...
01:01:40Oh, no, no, no.
01:01:41Too small.
01:01:42You'll get it all pinched.
01:01:43Hmm.
01:01:44Couldn't...
01:01:45No.
01:01:46No.
01:01:47What the devil are you talking about?
01:01:48I don't know.
01:01:49You started it.
01:01:50We've got to get in to see Betty.
01:01:51That's what we came for.
01:01:52Of course.
01:01:53Oh, look, the window's open.
01:01:55It's a dressing room.
01:01:56Yes.
01:01:57Oh, the idea.
01:01:58Huh?
01:01:59I've remembered.
01:02:00Wait there.
01:02:01This one's got brains.
01:02:02Don't know where they are.
01:02:03Get in.
01:02:04Get a hold of something quick.
01:02:05Oh, boy, oh, boy.
01:02:06Thank you very much.
01:02:07Come on.
01:02:08I'm afraid not.
01:02:09He's on the stage at the moment.
01:02:10I don't know.
01:02:11You'll have to phone up again.
01:02:12I'm afraid not.
01:02:13I'm afraid not.
01:02:14I'm afraid not.
01:02:15I'm afraid not.

01:16:25Oh!
01:16:27Oh!
01:16:49Come on, Betty. What have you changed for?
01:16:51We're running a minute. I decided to go back home.
01:16:53Don't be silly. Stick it out.
01:16:55We'll get our chance soon. It doesn't matter now.
01:16:57But you can't just walk out of the show.
01:16:59We will manage all right without me.
01:17:01You're not coming in?
01:17:03No. I've made up my mind.
01:17:05There's your queue.
01:17:07Right. Goodbye, Betty.
01:17:09Goodbye, Joan.
01:17:11I'll write to you.
01:17:17Just a minute. I don't know what to say to them.
01:17:19Come on. Don't be so ill-fated.
01:17:21Come on. Let's go.
01:17:27Well, here we are. Home again.
01:17:29I'm almost afraid to go in.
01:17:31Oh, shut up. There's nothing to be afraid of.
01:17:33They'd only be too glad to see you back.
01:17:35And tomorrow, back to school, I suppose.
01:17:37Well, it won't be for long. It'll soon be the end of term.
01:17:39Mr. Randall, you've got to come in with me.
01:17:41Oh, no. Not me. No, thanks.
01:17:43Oh, but you must.
01:17:45No, I can't. I'm not, anyway. And I wanted to promise you one thing.
01:17:47Promise you what?
01:17:49That I brought you home.
01:17:51But why shouldn't I tell you?
01:17:53Because I don't want you to. I don't want you to say anything about me at all.
01:17:55Look.
01:17:57Oh, it's Mummy. Now you'll have to meet them.
01:17:59Not likely. I'm off.
01:18:09Mummy. Betty.
01:18:11Oh, Betty.
01:18:13Oh, I thought you'd come back again tonight, darling.
01:18:15Oh, how ever could you do such a thing to us?
01:18:17Oh, I'm terribly sorry, Mummy.
01:18:19I know I've been beastly and selfish.
01:18:21But please forgive me.
01:18:23Oh, of course I will, dear.
01:18:25As long as you're home again, nothing else matters.
01:18:27Come along. Let's go and tell your daddy the good news.
01:18:29Is Daddy very angry with me?
01:18:31No, no. Of course not, dear.
01:18:33He'll be only too thankful that you're back.
01:18:47Hello, Betty.
01:18:49Hello, Mr. Randall. I thought I'd come and see you.
01:18:51Good.
01:18:53By the way, how did it go on last night?
01:18:55Were they angry with you?
01:18:57Oh, no. It was just like you said.
01:18:59They were only too glad to have me home again.
01:19:01What did I tell you, huh?
01:19:03And now I've got you, Mr. Randall.
01:19:05What do you mean?
01:19:07Well, you can't get out of meeting them this time, because I've brought them here with me.
01:19:09Oh, you shouldn't have done a thing like that.
01:19:11Oh, you shouldn't have done a thing like that.
01:19:13Oh, you shouldn't have done a thing like that.
01:19:15Oh, you shouldn't have done a thing like that, Betty.
01:19:17But you can't keep on avoiding them, even if you are shy.
01:19:19But you can't keep on avoiding them, even if you are shy.
01:19:21And anyway, they want to thank you themselves for what you did last night.
01:19:23And anyway, they want to thank you themselves for what you did last night.
01:19:25Mummy. Daddy.
01:19:33At last you're going to meet Mr. Randall.
01:19:35I'd be delighted.
01:19:37Well, indeed.
01:19:39This is Mr. Randall you've heard so much about.
01:19:46Mr. Randall, I want you to meet my mother and father.
01:19:48Good heaven.
01:19:49It can't be.
01:19:50You of all people.
01:19:51I'm afraid it is me.
01:19:52You know who it is.
01:19:53Of course.
01:19:54This is why you avoided meeting my husband and me.
01:19:55You knew we'd recognize you.
01:19:56What's the matter, Daddy?
01:19:57Do you know Mr. Randall?
01:19:58I certainly do.
01:19:59But not by that name.
01:20:00You mean you don't know who he is, Betty?
01:20:09Of course I know who he is.
01:20:14It's Blackfoot.
01:20:15I mean Mr. Randall.
01:20:16Our school caretaker.
01:20:17Who else should he be?
01:20:18What am I to tell her?
01:20:19Only the truth, that's all.
01:20:20What do you mean, the truth?
01:20:25This man is your father.
01:20:26My father?
01:20:27But your mother...
01:20:28No, no, Betty.
01:20:29No, no, Betty. We are only your adopted parents. He is your real father.
01:20:35But how can he be?
01:20:37Well, Betty, my love, it all happened about 17 years ago when your dear mother died.
01:20:41Your father decided then that a baby like you needed more care than he could give you.
01:20:46Needed a mother's care.
01:20:49We were looking for a baby to adopt at the time and someone put us in touch with Mr. Randall, your father.
01:20:56Yes, and he agreed that we should take you and bring you up as our own.
01:21:00He realized that we could do so much more for you than ever he could.
01:21:03But you assured us that you'd never come back here anymore.
01:21:06I know I promised and I kept that promise until about three years ago.
01:21:10And I only came back just to see her, that's all.
01:21:12You had no intention of making yourself known?
01:21:14Oh, no, it was only to see her once in a while.
01:21:17And I was so thrilled to find out what a lovely girl she developed in your care.
01:21:23Oh, I used to hang about the school for days, watching her go to and from.
01:21:27And I just wanted to be close.
01:21:31And one day I discovered something.
01:21:33What was it?
01:21:34They were advertising for a caretaker for the school.
01:21:37I applied for the job.
01:21:38Why?
01:21:39Well, so I could be near her for the most part of the time, knowing who I was, of course.
01:21:43And since then, strangely enough, we've become very good friends, haven't we, Betty?
01:21:49Yes.
01:21:50Yes.
01:21:51And you made much better presents than ever I could hope to have done.
01:21:56And I didn't want you to know I'd come back, of course.
01:21:58That's why I avoided trying to reach you, you see.
01:22:02Well, what are we going to do now?
01:22:05I don't know.
01:22:06Perhaps it would be better if we talked it over later.
01:22:09Very well.
01:22:13Come in.
01:22:14Oh, I'm sorry, Mr. Randall.
01:22:16Am I intruding?
01:22:17No, that's all right, lad.
01:22:18Come in.
01:22:21I thought I'd come and have a chat with you about the final tonight.
01:22:23Oh, yes.
01:22:24By the way, you have met Mr. and Mrs. Andrews, haven't you?
01:22:27Oh, yes.
01:22:28Good afternoon.
01:22:29Betty and Ted are swimming in the final against Claremont.
01:22:32Yes, we've had an invitation from the headmistress.
01:22:34Are you going?
01:22:35You bet we are.
01:22:36Let's go and see how Betty wins.
01:22:37Good.
01:22:39Everybody out of the water.
01:22:42Now for the final of the freestyle competition between Linhurst School and Claremont School.
01:22:49Betty Andrews and Ted Parker swim for Linhurst.
01:22:52Angela Kelly and Tony Atherton represent Claremont.
01:22:57On your marks.
01:23:18Get set.
01:23:19Go!
01:23:48There you are.
01:23:49I told you we'd win, didn't I?
01:23:50Oui.
01:23:51What do you mean, oui?
01:23:52Oui.
01:23:53Me?
01:23:54I trained them.
01:23:55You trained them.
01:23:56I did.
01:23:57I've trained more channel swimmers than you've had tennis.
01:23:58You're playing cat and dog.
01:23:59Go on.
01:24:00Go, go, go, go.
01:24:01Ah!
01:24:02Ah!
01:24:03Ah!

01:24:16Ah!
01:24:18Here.
01:24:19You're a nice fellow.
01:24:20Fancy pushing him in the water.
01:24:21I didn't push him in.
01:24:22But you did push him.
01:24:23I saw you push him in.
01:24:24You deliberately pushed him in.
01:24:25Please don't do that.
01:24:26I don't like to do that.
01:24:27I don't like to do that.
01:24:28I don't like to do that.
01:24:29Don't do that.
01:24:30Don't go away.
01:24:31Come here.
01:24:32Ah!
01:24:33Ah!
01:24:34Ah!

01:24:52Oh, I'd better.
01:24:53Good morning, dad.
01:24:54Oh, hello Betty.
01:24:55What are you doing?
01:24:56I won't be a moment.
01:25:03All right, Betty.
01:25:06Good morning, Dad.
01:25:09Oh, hello, Betty.
01:25:11What are you doing?
01:25:13Just ordering a few bulbs, that's all.
01:25:15Three shillings each way?
01:25:17Yes, they're special sort of bulbs.
01:25:19Well, how are you? That's all right.
01:25:21I'm all right, Dad.
01:25:22Well, have you decided anything?
01:25:24As a matter of fact, I have, yes.
01:25:25I think we'd better leave things as they are.
01:25:28You know, one day you may have a home of your own and...
01:25:31And then what?
01:25:32Perhaps you'll fix me up as a gardener or something.
01:25:35You never know.
01:25:36I say, Dad, I like those new teeth of yours.
01:25:38They're smashing.
01:25:39Smashing?
01:25:40If I could only keep them up, I'd be all right.
01:25:44Who's this, Dad?
01:25:46That's your mother.
01:25:48Isn't she lovely?
01:25:50You're the image here, aren't you?
01:25:54Oh, Dad, they're the church bells.
01:25:55I must go, I shall be late.
01:25:56You're going to church?
01:25:57Yes, with Ted Parker.
01:25:58Where is he?
01:25:59You'll see him, Dad.
01:26:00Oh, I'd better see you to the door, eh?
01:26:10Well?
01:26:11Goodbye, Dad.
01:26:16Cheerio, Mr. Randall.
01:26:17Mr. Randall?
01:26:18That's good.
